Yeah if I have 5-6 hours Im going to get some food in town at the very least haha. Even a few hours in a new country is cool
Cable ships go to some cool places and they tend to be in port for an extended amount of time.
I’ve heard some things about them cable ships Joe.. 🧐
You can also work on research ships. They go to a lot of interesting places sometimes and usually have 4 or 5 days in port at a time. I worked on one where there was a barrel of iced beer at the end of the gangway for those going ashore.
Well thought out, and I really liked how you outweighed the pros and cons. Be safe my man, happy holidays!
Happy holidays to you as well!
Best advice I ever got from was from an old Navy Chief Boatswains Mate. He said that read Sci Fi and old Whaling Sailing novels. And imagine you are going to be at sea fro years at a time. So anytime you were on land was a huge bonus. Made the time at sea go fast. Remember Star Trek? Only a handful of people ever got to down to the surface and if you were a regular crewman in a Red Shirt...you died.
I don’t want to get that comfortable! Haha I do read a lot of novels and of course edit a lot of videos.
I was a MM officer for 20 years, now retired. When I described the job to friends I would say I was an "ocean trucker".
😂😂😂 perfect
I spent two years in school in the Navy to learn how to operate Nuclear Reactors and most of the 4 hour shift when we actually got consisted of taking temp readings when we weren't cleaning something.
Video idea subject: chipping and painting
The last ship I was on I could count the times I chipped something on both hands.. and it was 120 day contract.
@@northwestsailor526 oh wow really? What ship was that?
If they want to see the world they can all go to US Navy, 30 to 90 days at sea then it’s Liberty Call. 🤣🤣
Honestly they’d have a lot more time on land with the Liberty Call than they would as Merchant Mariners who are in port for less than 24 hours and still have to work/sleep. I think some just don’t want the “military life”. Which I don’t blame them, I like to make my own decisions as well.
Say Merchant Sailor...
also why is a standard contract ship more money then a sweet heart contract? and can a entry level sailor meaning first time you start get a sweet heart contract?
Standard contract is a standard number. SweatHearts you get to travel to random places but get payed less. Yes anyone can get on the Sweatheart ships. It’s harder to get the standard because they pay more and most people want a bigger paycheck than seeing a port for 3 hours in another country.
What ship are you currently on?
Keep Merchant Marine, then when they ask, tell them it’s secret and you value your life more tan yo want to no. 🤪🤪🤪😁😎
leviathan is real
so how long is a standard contract ship?
You can expect 120 days for a normal contract unless your doing relief jobs.
How much time off can you take in between jobs?
As long as your wallet will let you.
