Im into buying my first Cooper. Trying to get some known issues regarding this model. And this nicely done. Video is good enough but your voice and knowledge is what got my attention. I would drop my mini in your garage 24/7. Nicely done peeps
Hello I’m a mechanic that bought a Mini Cooper for my daughter and like most people I thought the mini was the cutest car. But just as some people have commented, this car has lots of maintenance issues Because my daughters mini stayed on the lot for a while. I’ve changed out all normal maintenance items in the motor (engine oil and filter, spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, put new lights on and all the black out trim to make it look nice. The difficult items that thew me for a loop is the spark plugs needed a special socket, the PCV diaphragm is built into the valve cover, the timing chain assembly, and the transmission fluid change. My daughters mini is a 2009 Mini Cooper non S model. I have all the parts installed and have pictures of you guys need help. If you are burning oil it’s because of a couple of issues and the main corporate is the PCV. Let me know and I’ll send you some information of what I have found out. Buy a Mini Cooper manual is the first thing I will tell anyone with this car. And not the one at your local auto parts store. Oh and I have interesting pictures of the timing tensioner before and after the install and it’s not what this UA-camr said
Hello, my mini has the engine light on, scanner read code P2188 (system too rich at idle bank 1) I changed the MAP sensor and PCV valve cover and still reading the same code. I reset the computer after but my car still running weird. Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Thanks in advance
just bought a 2012 countryman all4 s called the dealer they said that version does not have the timing chain problem. They also said keep an eye out for oil on the passengers side where the timing chain is and then go from there. they also told me the engine should have a similar small diesel sound on cold start days.
I know this is old, but if anyone have this issue and see this message. Here is an EASY WAY how to tell if you suspect your timing chain guide broken or crack or damage. Drain your Oil and exam for small pieces of "Plastic / Others" in your Oil + Filter. If you do not find any, then it's still aok and could be the flappers loose. If you see little pieces or fragments then you know what it is. NOTE: Change your Oil often and make sure it is "Synthetic". Regular Oil can break down / crack things when the Engine is hot.
@@diegonavyhotmail - Hi, it's actually the 'Valves'. I call it the "Flappers" since it flap up and down is what we are actually adjusting. See this guy's video here..... He explain it even better than I can. Link: ua-cam.com/video/ZFvwyCroV2w/v-deo.html
@@diegonavyhotmail - By the way.... EXAM your Oil and that is very important !!! You will know a lot, just by doing that. NOTE: Use "Synthetic Oil", this will prevent parts 'Break-Down" since the 'Guide" is made of "polycarbonate". YES, cheap + crappy oil can break it down or made it weak during Hot/Cold during engine usage/running.
This was a great explanation!! Thanks for taking the time to do this video! Were the replacement parts stock MINI parts? I need to replace my timing chain (67.5mm of play) and would like to use more sturdy parts if they are available (my car has ~59k miles). I had an Infinity G20 which I sold with ~225k miles and the timing chain was never replaced, so, I know that sturdy parts do exist! Thanks again,Lee
I am surprised no one here mentioned (or maybe knows about) that these are BMW engines which are also used in earlier generation BMW 1 series. And BMW 1 series has this problem very much so. BMW did have a recall and fixed failing timing parts at no cost. To make matters worse the 1 series engines are oriented so that cam chain is behind, i.e. under the firewall, means one has to pull the whole engine out to work on it, what a Nightmare!! I have heard that problem starts when the thin oil jet in the tensioner gets clogged, stopping it from applying pressure on the chain. To avoid this, change oil and oil filter often, even before the change is due.
When you said that the new tensioner is actually shorter, doesn't it mean that the car had actually already had a tensioner replaced under a MINI issued TSB? Also did you get to compare the length of the new and used chains? Was the used one longer?
Thanks for this video. Very useful. I have my car undone with the same problem. Can you provide me with the tightening forces for the sprocket bolts please (camshafts and crankshaft).

So I've just bought a Peugeot 207 GTi which has the same PSA/BMW Prince THP 175 motor in it as the cooper S. Im wondering exactly what symptoms to look out for for this. My car is a 2008 with 53k miles on it. When it is cold there is a minor top end rattle which gets louder when you rev the engine past 2-3k or so. This rattle goes away once the oil has come to temp (when I did my pre-buy inspection the engine was already warm, kicking myself for that). Checked the oil and its filled to a good amount. Informative but exactly as he said, an overview only. I am a tech for a living and work at one of the few independent shops in my state (as far as I know and have heard by the amount of these things we do) that have the necessary tools to do this. Depending on the year and aspiration (turbo or non), it requires different specialty tools. As far as we have seen, this happens to any mini made before 2012. We have not done one made after 2011, but that's not to say it doesn't happen to those too. It's a difficult job if you've never done it. And doing it wrong can lead to more harm than good short term (in then end it's catastrophic). Make sure whoever is doing the work knows what they're doing. Torque specifications on these things is very important (i.e. you don't just put the tensioner in and call it a day, you have to pre-tension it first, then tighten it to spec). Any questions I'll answer if I can. Good luck!
+Pawnit Notting My R56 is making the exact same noise. If it is indeed the timing chain rattle, will it harm it to drive it... or do I need to not drive it until it's repaired? I guess my question is can it cause more damage by driving it?

With that being said, once the chain loses tension the engine becomes out of time. If the engine gets too far out of time engine damage will occur. My suggestion would be get your car fixed ASAP.

My car (2008 S) has 55k miles and the entire chain assembly was replaced in 2013, including tensioner. Noticed this morning (in about 30 degree temps) that there's some noise...very similar to "valve lash (?)" or lifter noise which Subarus are notorious for (cold starts). It may do it every day but since it's my wife's car, today is the first day i noticed it. Is this also "normal" for Minis? Thanks...great video.

Nice information. Very well done! How many miles on average does the timing assembly need to be replaced assuming oil changes are done at regular intervals?
hi sir. i have aproblem with my mini cooper s 2012 r56 engine n18b16a. the computer shows low pressure. i replaced a new one and didn't work. what do you think is the problem?
Everything i read is for 07 and up minis, I have a 2006 and I'm pretty sure the chain just failed, are these cars affected with this. Mine is an supercharged thanks
The tensioner failed, not sure why the oil level was always kept where it should be, the chain and guide rails were in pretty good shape but I changed them anyway, also found out when everything came apart that my harmonic balancer was completly toasted so that added another couple hundred to the bill, over all it wasn't a bad job to change if I didn't have to wait for the balancer it prob would have only taken about 6hrs or so
Im also looking to replace my second body control module, I currently have no heat or ac in the car and I'm about fed up with it, I have it listed for sale now only asking what I owe just to get out of the car, there a good car but a very dealer specfic car wich sucks oh well lesson learned I'll never buy another mini again
My wife's Toyota got 100,000 miles in Germany and needed a new engine because of a bad cylinder head free of cost by Toyota after six years (they know there were issues with the 2.2 Turbo Diesel 177 hp). A gear shaft of the manual transmission seized as well, so we needed a new transmission for almost 3,600 Euros. I like Toyota, but this one burned our money like nothing else in the world.
Just wondering if its the same noise my car makes. it goes away whenever I hold the clutch down. then starts back up again whenever I let it go. (2005 mini S 88k)
hello my friend i have a problem in my mini cooper s 2008 , i have 2 cylinders #1 and #4 misfiring first thing i made a compression for my car and it was fine i checked all cables and sensors i checked injectors , coil and spark plugs , changed hpfp and also the back fuel pump , also checked the ecu the car has a very rough start working only on 2 cylinders . there is no check engine light and the car is vibrating like crazy .. any help please
+Angel27918 Yes but it is a different engine so you will need a different tool to lock the single cam shaft. The tensioner is similar but there are only 2 guide rails to replace. If you car has the rattle , don't drive it, get the tensioner replaced as they tend to stick with age and it may be worth replacing the 2 guide rails with new ones. Not a difficult DIY with the right tools and a Bentley manual and should take an afternoon to complete. If your guide rails are damaged you will need to drop and inspect the Sump for broken parts of the guide rails.
he said in the video , in this cars case some of those broken bits wound up towards the bottom on the chain but luckily didn't get lodged near the sprocket at the bottom..which I assume would have ended up with a catastrophic engine failure. but I would think your right, if you further inspect and you don't have that problem you COULD just replace the top rail
Greggory Park It would be nice if the aftermarket stepped in to correct the problem by redesigning the parts with a measure of durability rather than cost reduction in mind. Have to wonder if this was intentionally designed to just last for the duration of warranty coverage. First time I've dealt with a car that has its thermostat buried in a disposable housing, and with a lifespan that could be considered as a maintenance schedule. Perplexing as there are no advantages to doing it the way they did either. Temperature control is actually very poor, from the readings seen on a scan tool (a simple engine temperature gauge is conspicuously absent on this 'sports' car, though they had space for the wall size speedometer..)
Asian made cars like honda, toyota, scion, kia, and mazda etc... last longer and more reliable than american, german cars etc...But all cars have problems when they hit a certain mileage.
Vincent-Have you ever thought that you may just be lucky? I change my oil every 5000 miles and check the levels weekly. Timing chain still needed to be replaced at 100k miles. There's a reason BMW settled the class action lawsuit against them over this reason.
What I wanna know is why da f..k this people would design a car with this type of timming chain so many problems ... copy some shit from Toyota and Honda god dammit this car could easily be the best mini ever made but I guess someone in between the production said NO screw my task I just don't give a f..k about it let me just put this part in let's see what happens on the long term 😝😝😝 wow ...i have a civic 93 VX 180,000 and the timing belt still good !!!!! And yes 47 MPG!!!! I want to get a mini but this shit just kills it 4 me😩😩😩😩
There are plenty of videos of the exact same thing happening to Hondas. I've literally just watched a video of a Civic with a failed chain tensioner like this. Also I have an Australian Ford Falcon and these things have passed 1.5 million KMs without having any work done on the engine, just serviced on time. It's not always the brand although yes with the Mini it is quite common!
Fozee Black i own a 2009 mini base that may have a timing problem because of bmws cheap timing guides suck! And to fix it isnt exactly the easiest either being as tho the engine is so complex.Great car to drive etc but sucks on that part
No the R56 engine had a Peugeot engine in it. Its the same engine thats in the Peugeot 208 GTI. Their petrol engines SUCK!. The diesels are okay though.

That’s not the rattling noise I’m getting mine sounds like it’s coming from the clutch in away. It’s not terrible but it’s this rattle noise when ur idled
Nice information. Very well done! How many miles on average does the timing assembly need to be replaced assuming oil changes are done at regular intervals?
Thank you
hi sir I have a countryman 1.6L N16 petrol engine the rpm don't exceed 4900 at neutral
MINI really f'ed up when they did away with the Tritec [W11] and went with these all-aluminum, turbo-charged units, smh
not really, great engines. Just need extra maintenance than most people expect, and should be driven carefully while warming up in cold environments.
My 07 non s R56 just started making this sound, should I just sell it for a grand or what
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IN MY 323F ENGINE - BUT NO VIDEO HO TO REPAIR
hi sir. i have aproblem with my mini cooper s 2012 r56 engine n18b16a. the computer shows low pressure. i replaced a new one and didn't work.
what do you think is the problem?
hi there, question any dme codes?
I like Toyota, but this one burned our money like nothing else in the world.
heros2110 Opel ist noch geiler
good explanation Video.
Just wondering if its the same noise my car makes. it goes away whenever I hold the clutch down. then starts back up again whenever I let it go. (2005 mini S 88k)
Hey the issue you have the push out bearing in the clutch.
hello my friend i have a problem in my mini cooper s 2008 , i have 2 cylinders #1 and #4 misfiring first thing i made a compression for my car and it was fine i checked all cables and sensors i checked injectors , coil and spark plugs , changed hpfp and also the back fuel pump , also checked the ecu the car has a very rough start working only on 2 cylinders . there is no check engine light and the car is vibrating like crazy .. any help please
Did you ever fix the problem? Your vehicle may have excessive carbon build up
does anyone know if this can be the same in an 02 mini one? just had this noise start this evening when putting it away :/ garage with it again!
Whats the mileage on this mini
Any reason why one couldn't just replace the top piece that is broken?
he said in the video , in this cars case some of those broken bits wound up towards the bottom on the chain but luckily didn't get lodged near the sprocket at the bottom..which I assume would have ended up with a catastrophic engine failure.
but I would think your right, if you further inspect and you don't have that problem you COULD just replace the top rail
Thanks for the reply. it just looked like the top piece would be a comparatively quick fix if possible.

It would be nice if the aftermarket stepped in to correct the problem by redesigning the parts with a measure of durability rather than cost reduction in mind.
Может подскажешь, где купить приспособление для валов на EP6 120л.с.
Oh shit my Cooper s 2012 sounds exactly like that now 😱😱
Change your Oil often and make sure it is "Synthetic". Regular Oil can break down / crack things when the Engine is hot or too hot.
Jordan Bronson ye thanks 😊👍
Myrrh Curie it seems to only happen when my engine oil is low...🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Asian made cars like honda, toyota, scion, kia, and mazda etc... last longer and more reliable than american, german cars etc...But all cars have problems when they hit a certain mileage.
the timing chain points? anyone help me?
The old one looks exactly like the new one
Maybe that's the noise I can hear from time to time.
maybe cold start days. dealer said it sounds like a small diesel engine on cold days.
I know ford uses similar chain guides on all there engines
de sein mpromplem with de peuzo 1.6 t de make de same saks
Go to a dealer and listen to a brand new mini and compare.
Excelent.
I have a 2004 doing this
+CL1CKS Timing chain tensioner
My 2005 is doing the same thing. Changed the tensionor and it’s still doing it.
Thats a bad peugeot engine.
+carmelloangels How so? It's a quality engine.
what a shit engine I'm a mechanic and made the mistake of buying a car with a french engine 🙈 its been nothing but problems for me
David Mclennan maybe you need to keep up with maintenance, 140k miles down and no problems.
Vincent-Have you ever thought that you may just be lucky? I change my oil every 5000 miles and check the levels weekly. Timing chain still needed to be replaced at 100k miles. There's a reason BMW settled the class action lawsuit against them over this reason.
Its the timing chain tensioner - has been upgraded 3 times , the late mk 2 models have the latest version .
French engine?
Only diesel engines in mini was peugeot.
Prince engine was designed by bmw engineer s
muito bomm
sounds like a diesel O.o
Nothing to see here, it just became a diesel :D
Donald Trump smile Mechanic version
I have a 1973 mini with a 1275 engine sounds better.
looks like a ford or french engine piece of crap btw the vid in the other hand very well made thanks for the upload
I want to get a mini but this shit just kills it 4 me😩😩😩😩
So your saying that Japanese cars are worse ??? 😒
EP6 is worst engine in the world. cause it's bmw engenering. Hate this engine! it fucked my brains
PYCJIAH1 it's a peugeot engine 😉
Roh 9ilni
These vehicles are garbage... do not ever buy one.
Peugeot engines SUCK!!
I'am french and your motor is german ......Look reference of parts :))
No the R56 engine had a Peugeot engine in it. Its the same engine thats in the Peugeot 208 GTI. Their petrol engines SUCK!. The diesels are okay though.
Faux !! prenez les références des bobines d'allumage, c'est bm montées sur serie 3
Plastic garbage. Shame on BMW. This is simply unacceptable.
Change your Oil often and make sure it is "Synthetic". Regular Oil can break down / crack things when the Engine is hot or too hot.
SAME SHIT WITH N52 ENGINES ON BMW'S 3 SERIES
BMW Garbage.
