  • So this is what not to do after surgery! I'm finally out of the woods and feeling better but definitely made some mistakes along the way. When recovering from surgery I found it was a little cycle of good and bad days. 1 good,1 bad. 2 good, 1 bad. 3 good, 1 not so good. Get the picture. Take care and you can still hug your wife and daughters. - Marcie

    Mike, sorry to hear you were in severe pain, but I can somehow relate to the passing out from the pain. I ‘ve been through 3 major back surgeries and for each I had spinal taps done right after surgery . The icu nurses had to move me from side to side due to a drain in my back, 1st few days,I blacked out from the pain and I even coded twice. I wasn’t given any drugs because I kept passing out, finally on the fifth day I was on a morphine drip. Now, I guess you will be a little more understanding with your patients. Take great care of yourself and let your wife know each day how much you appreciate her. God bless you

    Oh my Mike, hope you are feeling better today. It seems to me not taking your medication delays your recovery because you put your system under so much more stress by doing what you did. The energy you used trying to fight through it would have been going to your hand? You will use what you learned to help your patients so it was not in vain. Best wishes

    Hey, Mike!
    I feel you, man. 2 weeks ago I was washing the dishes and one of them slipped out of my hand. Instinct made me try to catch it before it hit the floor, and the dish suddenly split in 2 and cut deep into my middle finger. I ended up with 5 stitches, and numbness in part of the finger. Im still in the healing prosess, and hope it will turn out ok in the end.
    Thanks for posting the pinkie videos😊

    My 77 yr old Dad had always been very active, but finally had hip replacement surgery to correct pain in hip. He was supposed to take it easy for 6wks but felt so good that after 7 days climbed a ladder with a 50# bag of corn on his shoulder to put it in the feeder. All was well until the highest step, when he lost his balance a little and pushed up with his post-surgical leg. POP!
    Docs said that the injury could not be repaired with another replacement, and he's lived the last 9 years with pain at a 4-5 (pre-surgical was 5-6).
    I learned then to moderate my own tendency to not follow post-surgical instructions!!!

    I learned that about the medications as well usually have to take them the first day or 2 and good after that. Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way. They have the book in audio here on youtube. Glad to see things are moving forward for you. Make a conscience effort to keep slowing yourself down even though you are feeling better for the first 6 months to a year. I didn't and ended up worse off than my initial injury. I felt good and pushed and hurt myself worse. Also most important your wife listen to her ... she cares for you and your health she wants to keep you around for a long time.

    Years ago after an appendectomy while still in the hospital I didn’t want my pain meds either for the same reason. My nurse who was also a friend said that by taking the meds your body is able to relax and rest better enabling the healing process. That helped my thinking. Glad to hear you are past all that intense pain. And YES a VERY GOOD idea to take pain meds an hour before your therapy appointment! Continuing to pray for you. I’m glad you are sharing everything and that now it’s documented as well for you.

    The worst is behind you now, Mike. As always, thanks for the update. Did your Calderona breba fig ever ripen? I had one breba on mine as well, and I ate it yesterday. It was really good, and I hear that the main crop is even better. It's been comparatively cool for July here and we just barely got into the low 80's today. Still, I've been eating a few brebas lately. None of them were as good as the calderona yesterday. Also, I hope the baby ducks are going fine. Be sure to keep us updated on them whenever you're able to.

    Hi Mike, I just found this video. Tomorrow it's monday and I'll go through surgery because I have an injury similar to yours on my left pinky finger (luckily for me, I'm right handed) that cut my tendon and nerve. I'm terrified that it won't go well and it'll affect my karate training (I compete, I need both my hands to do so and the technique is key) so I began looking for information, and I found your videos. It's helping me to know what's gonna happen, so thank you for sharing your experience and I hope you're way better nowadays

    You should know being a nurse that pain is always magnified in the night time. Pain meds are must important from 2000 to 0600. You are doing great now. All will be well. (No pun intended.)

    @yellowbird5411 5 років тому

    Working in the home health care field as a social worker, I am always amazed at how the retired nurses I visit who are recovering from illnesses or surgeries are such bad patients. They are stubborn, and may or may not follow the doctor's orders. Sometimes they pay for that. Seems the worst part of this whole thing was after the surgery, with you in so much pain and probably on the verge of going into shock. We can never see ourselves the way we can see others. That is why nurses make good nurses, but lousy patients. Glad you are on the mend. Blessings.

  • @lully381
    @lully381 5 років тому

    We all learn from our experiences in life especially our mistakes so don't beat yourself up about how you behaved after surgery it can really mess with your mind. Not only the drugs doing the messing but your body recovering from trauma it has been through, you know all about that in your profession I'm sure. Try and take this time you have on your hands (no pun intended!) to rest, reflect and do something you don't usually get the time to do (as long as it can be done one handed of course) Wishing you (and your poor wife, who loves you and will always look after you no matter what) a speedy recovery Mike. On another note my recent attempts at propagating are not doing too bad, some good some not so but what I have learnt from plants is always give them time, so I will. And this afternoon I shall try some Hydrangea cuttings I am going to pinch from my son's plant I am looking after in my garden in a bit pot and it is doing extremely well, I must be doing something right it seems.

    Glad to hear the good news. Now you have to really give yourself permission to take things a bit slower and allow your body to heal. Keep the pain managed, that's the most important thing to keep mindful of. You'll be pain free sooner than you think but until then listen to your wife. You're healthy, strong and good natured, that alone will help your healing process. Best of luck with the recovery. You'll be back to your nursery tasks and videos in no time. Cheers from Canada.

    Mike, thank you for the videos regarding your accident, surgery and re-coup... I have spent many hours of my last two Saturdays watching them and learned quite a lot from your recovery as expressed by you... Thank you...!!! BUT... in the meantime, a huge and warm embrace for your wife... Ask her about how she feels and what she is thinking... If this incident was bad enough for you, you just can't imagine what it meant to her... I am with her...!!! And your children...!!! (and with you too... of course...!!! ) Love you...

      @@MikeKincaid79 I was thinking more of brief moments of warmth and tenderness... Not to say you are not offering them, not at all, just make them more numerous, more often, at every turn... Like rubbing your nose to hers... Kissing her neck... YOU KNOW ALL THAT, FOR PETE'S SAKES...!!! I am off now...

    Hi Mike, so glad you're recuperating and thanks for updating us all. Don't miss your meds and get well soon! I watch all your videos without miss since I found your channel couple years ago. I learnt a lot from you especially your hydrangeas series taught me so much about propagation which I did last year and they live in pots since then. This week I decided to plant in the flower bed. They make me think of you with prayers that you shall heal quicker. Regards from Malaysia ☺

    Speedy recovery sir! Thank you for sharing it helps in knowing what's going on with you and in my own journey. I'm writing, "it's just a pinky." on a sticky note and putting it on my mirror so it's one of my inspirational quotes to remind me to get out of my head and out of my own way. It sounds weird, but I watch videos about things that bring me joy in my life that I can't do physically on my bad pain days. You become like a friend and these kind of life stories make you more accessable, real, and will get you more subs.

      Awe, thanks. We ARE all friends here. We're just brought together by modern technology. I'm honored that you are using the "it's just a pinky" quote! By the way, you're not weird, you're human.

    LOL-- I love love LOVE pain medication! I'm so grateful I live in a time where pain medication is abundant as I don't know how I could have had three kids without it. I don't think I could ever have thought as you did, thinking I'd be better off without pain meds. I'm glad you're in the healing stages and praying for you to get better quickly. Only happy days ahead for you, yeah!

    Glad the surgery went well & it’s over. I have learned it is better to stay ahead of the pain. Don’t wait until it hurts soooo bad to take your pain meds. You might want to take pain meds before OT, so you can do the OT. Take it from someone who knows. I broke my knee & elbow at the same time. I can fly really well. I just can’t land worth a darn. The 1st time I went to PT in rehab, I was in tears in the first few minutes. Do your OT! It makes all the difference in the world in getting full use back. Prayers for your continued & complete healing. Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱

    As a nurse, you should now have great empathy for your patients. Wisdom comes from life experiences and you have now gained wisdom. Use it wisely, my friend. So happy for you that all turned out well and that your pinky wasn't as badly injured as you thought. 😊

    Glad you had those moments that made you aware that sometimes you do need to let others do their best to help you and let the controle to the loved ones instead of trying to do it all by yourself. Live and learn moments are the best because that's how you grow. You were not yourself and now you're returning to be so and it will only go better from now and don't worry about the pinky as it was fully protected when you fell down as long as there was no flexing/stretching it should be just fine. Take care and the best wishes to you and your family, looking forward to see more about the plants again as well but do keep us updated how it all went/goes next wednesday ok? I do love a good ending of the #itsjustapinky ;)

    Ah Mike!! Glad you are ok now after a little “spasm”! You will be an even better nurse now you know what it’s like on the other side. I had breast cancer and I found out the night before surgery I had to have a mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy after an MRI, and I was absolutely horrified and terrified. I couldn’t even bring myself to look and I just kept thinking it would look like a shark attack. The next day I started bleeding under my skin as I had a chest wall hematoma, a second surgery and then a blood transfusion. My BP was 70/40 and I think I almost died. It was sheer terror. But after it was over I felt a sort of strange calm and I appreciated my life so much more ever afterwards.

      I'm sorry for your experience. I've taken care of a lot of patients after mastectomy surgery and understand the process you went through from a nursing perspective. You're a tough woman and I admire your strength.
