Robert, look at how much of the complexion products the MUA left in the client's hairline! At the 0:51 mark, you can see the actual color of her hairline on either side of the face, before the MUA applied the complexion products. Now go to 12:57. Her hairline has turned PEACH! The MUA was really rough with that filthy sponge, too. The lips were a travesty. The client has pretty symmetrical lips and a nice natural lip line. I think I'd have to go home, double cleanse, and then go over my face with rubbing alcohol. Using the felt liner and those dirty brushes on the eyes really freaked me out, too.
When newly trained (and well trained) makeup artist tell me they are nervous about getting started with clients I show them videos like these. I've had this before when I decided to get my make up "professionally" done. I left hiding my face, overpaid and washed it off as soon as we got to my friends room. Redone it myself and it wasn't fabulous but it was better than looking like a clown.
Same! I've had my makeup done once by a so-called 'pro'. When I walked outside people actually stared at me, snickering!! On my way back home I met a friend in the bus who asked me if I'd "accidentally contracted liver disease in between the last time she saw me (the week before. MSD) and now", because the foundation shade used was not just way too dark, but suuuuuper yellow. The look had been done with the intention of going to a large fancy party, a gala, that evening, but I ended up rubbing my face clean ASAP and just went with my own simpler makeup. At least I didn't look like a clown with cirrhosis...
@Sarah-nk4zh Aww, that's sweet of you to say. At least we had fun, right? And based on your profile pic you don't need much on your face, or any at all! I'm decent at makeup, but very bad at eyeshadow. I have a pile of pallettes and a ton of good brushes, but I almost never use them as I just don't know what to do. My eyes are super deep set with little lid space, and now that I'm 46, almost 47yo, the skin is loose as well. So, pretty much none of the eyeshadow looks in existence, nor any of the tips of UA-cam, can be done or used. This is why I thought a pro could create the glam smoky eye I wanted so badly. Uh-huh...if I'd ask someone to smack me around, I would have gotten the same result. In the end, yours truly went with one simple lid colour, some liner, mascara, and a highlight in my inner corner. Like always... Oh well! I've recently bought some toppers; glitzy, shiny shadows, actual glitter shadows, and a few cool duochrome liners. I don't give a F about all that "women of a certain age shouldn't...", so I'm going to see if I can up my game that way.
I’ve had a similar experience when I had my engagement photoshoot. I left in tears and just washed it all and did it myself. Honestly such an awful day for self esteem 😭😭
@Colourful-Monochrome OMG, for an engagement photoshoot??!! That's way worse than my experience. If I see a MUA whom let me lying on my back, to do my makeup, I will leave instandly. When you lying on your back, your check will sack and your contouring the wrong spot. If you put eyeshaddow on this position you don't have control both eye will look the same. Better you make the eyeshaddow when the client sit up and look straight.

It makes me think they really don't care if they haven't taken the time to educate themselves on their own job 😭
But you really cannot completely learn makeup “online”. You need lots of practice on real people to get practical knowledge on skin types, tones, ages, facial features, etc. I am tired of competing with “MUA’s” who’ve watched a few UA-cam videos and decide to hang a shingle and charge $40 for makeup.
