Better Than Rolex? Omega’s new releases….

  • Omega’s sporadic releases these past few years have given me some thoughts. The brand as a whole is rich in history, make amazing watches, and in many respects have driven horological evolutions. Despite all that, it always seems as if they are one step behind the big dog (Rolex). Release after release, there’s always something that’s not quite right.

    I so agree on the 321 Speedmaster, best caseshape of any speedy, has a nice tapering bracelet with microadjustments, it really needs nothing, other than 100m water resistance, plus availability. If they can sell it at around what the RRP is for a Daytona, people will probably buy them. Yeah I know they are hand assembled by one watchmaker from start to finish, but why? I don't need it to be made by one guy. Heck I'm even cool with another movement in it, just have the straight lugs, 39mm size, 100m water resistance and the bracelet of the current 321 Ed White. Would definitely be a winner.

    Dear Omega, make my 38.5mm Aqua Terra thinner, sub 12mm preferably. I don't care if I cannot see the coaxating movement, I want a watch that hugs.

    Although I think a few of the models need some fine tuning there are a lot of things that are working for the company. For general non Omega fans that don't delve deep enough into the catalogue they don't see much of what's working. You mentioned the Pro Plof. Why would they make a ton of variations of that model if people already criticize too many speedy variations? If comparing to Rolex other than precious metal the Submariner only has two colors. I agree the bracelets across the board need help but they do provide options to help with that (rubber, mesh, nato, sailcloth) it's almost as if every time they do something that works it's compared to how it's not Rolex enough then when it is very Rolex they're called copycats. My main gripe is if they do all it takes to bring in a non Omega enthusiast they won't want to pay the higher premium it will cost for things like a slim diving chronograph 😫 (ie IWC ingenieur)

    • @ChristopherNegroni
      @ChristopherNegroni  10 місяців тому

      Valid points. But if we look to what they did with their recent “summer” releases with deep diving blue dials which was after I made this video, they indeed came out with a beautiful Ploprof. Overall Omega is great. They continually innovate in the space, but I think with that comes big misses. Not to mention the speedy was about a 5-6k watch retail before 2020 covid and they have managed to make the once bargain steel sports chrono a nearly 9k watch today. They don’t want to be compared to Rolex but they are playing in Rolex type of money. Naturally they will be compared

      @@ChristopherNegroni I love the Pro Plof but we gotta agree the dimensions are not enough to satisfy the portion of the market looking for 36-38mm Rolex sized watches. Currently the OP in Black no date goes for $6400 retail there's no way you're telling me the speedy should stay at 5k. The black Bay 58 is 4k so a watch with as much history and demand as the speedy should actually be the same price as a sub $9k IMO (and this is someone who owns a speedy but still thinks it's worth it) There's no reason a speedy should cost less than a Santos with a subpar movement. Speedy has long been under priced even with it's short comings. We can overlook bigger brands flaws due to the desirability (hype) but when it comes to Omega they really get the short end of the stick.

  • @Csibu89
    @Csibu89 Рік тому +1

    Where's the novelties? Where's the colored dial OPs? See, the real way of copying it isn't by making some new colored dials and then producing enough, the main thing is you do not produce enough of them so people keep wanting them, that's their idea of hyping up their own brand I guess :D

    • @ChristopherNegroni
      @ChristopherNegroni  Рік тому +1

      Haha no, they got played by Rolex. As soon as they copied them, OPs were discontinued. So by the time you even start seeing the novelties, Rolex has long made them “uncool” 😆

    Omega is taking chances with different designs and variations. You can't have it both ways. On the other hand, Rolex is making the same watch, dial, and case on how many different models?

    • @ChristopherNegroni
      @ChristopherNegroni  Рік тому +1

      There’s a differences between risk taking and designs/ releases that aren’t well thought out. I think Omega is great, but I think they just get in their own way sometimes.

      @@ChristopherNegroni I'll agree with you there. On some models like particular speedy racing, Omega is trying a little too hard with the "subtle" design choices. But I don't think this means they're chasing Rolex. Isn't everyone chasing Rolex? This is just Omega's way of answering to the enthusiast collectors.

    • @ChristopherNegroni
      @ChristopherNegroni  Рік тому

      @@TurnRiver I think the problem is omega wants to squeeze as much money as they can. While Rolex has so much that they worry about protecting their brand. Design is important. You’re right everyone is chasing Rolex.

    • @miabeatz80
      @miabeatz80 10 місяців тому

      I have to agree that taking risk does have drawbacks. When all the other models except the speedy were initially created they were under the moniker of Seamaster. The reason I mention this is that it's much harder to evolve a design that wasn't a specific watch. Many of the design ques used on the super racing are kinda corny but they aren't hard pressed to sell this specific model but more so to launch the technology. If you relate this move to cars it would be like Toyota introducing it's most revolutionary new engine in a Camry (what if there are problems which they're will be with new technology) they would ruin their grail product. Rolex hasn't recently introduced any new movement technology that changes the watch game to this extent (they do have other patents like case design though) so it's hard to compare the brands.

    Bro I agree so much idk whey they always chase Rolex than you have people making videos called better than a Rolex. Omega has insane Heritage and beautiful watches they just need to make them thinner and stop with these Goofy bond themes. The Ultra Deep, Aqua Terra’s and even some precious metal Moon-watches were absolute turd. Their Plo Prof as well as Constellation which is a masterpiece are watches Omega needs to push. Also they can make some amazing thin dress watches like in the past and market those more.

    The Super Racing name is definitely dumb. I think the italicised 10 is more for the 10 year anniversary of the Si balance spring (since the Spirate thing is an evolution of it). It just happened to be in a Seamaster. I'm always down for brands bettering their accuracy, so cudos where deserved.
    Totally agree with what it takes to fix the Speedy though. Give me water resistance and an adjustable clasp. And for that matter, give me a hesalite crystal with a sapphire case back. A 321 movement would be cool too, but I'd be down for a 3861 movement with that Spirate wizardry in it.
    If Omega did the above, I might be able to get on board with it, though I don't think even that would quell my man crush on the IWC Big Pilot...

    • @ChristopherNegroni
      @ChristopherNegroni  Рік тому

      Why even mention a different watch? Do any other brands pay homage to a completely different line of watches with new releases? The customer buying it isn’t going to look at the ten and smile “oh yea tens years of….” It’s such a reach.

    Truth was told ideed. However the one big thing about the spiral system is, supposedly, customer care, because if the watch is running late, the local staff should be able to regulalte it there instead of shipping it to switzerland or a Service HQ for a service - lowering waiting times. And one thing that nearly nobody talks about is after purchase customer care as that is sadly not as luxurious as you would hope - compared to the buying process. So that could indeed be a step in the right direction. The Speedmaster Super racing is ugly as fk tho..
