I went to a Norman Gunston comedy show once in Newtown (Sydney). It was far and away the best comedy I have ever seen. I was literally rolling in the aisle laughing. My wife was so embarrassed but I didn't care. His comedy is largely spontaneous as he responds to the audience participation. Kudos to a largely lost art these days.
You can't expect Warren Beatty, fresh off the plane from the USA, to understand a distinctly Aussie comedy character like Norman Gunston (played by Garry McDonald). All things said and done Beatty did pretty well and "Norman" was hilarious as always 😁
@@courtneynewton-john8862 I was born in Melbourne and thought it sounded like some accents I had heard around certain Melbourne suburbs, and that's what I meant by regional. But I wasn't going to assume he based it on that because memory told me he was from Sydney or at least worked out of there. So I just looked it up and he was born in NSW and later lived in Woolongong, admittedly I didn't read on. They described his accent as 'Strine'.
He had his own comedy program, but used to do these unannounced interviews at big press conferences. What's remarkable is that all the other journalists in the room, at all of his interviews, are too busy laughing to interrupt with their own questions. Search for more Norman Gunston. His interviews with Sally Struthers and Cheech & Chong are classic.
I just watched the Cheech and Chong one again and there was a guy in the comments who was the 2nd cameraman at the shoot. Told a story about a bit they cut out-apparently Norman asked if they were going muff diving in the Barrier Reef while they were in Australia!
This moment was mentioned in Australian film critic David Stratton's autobiography (good read, I recommend it). Beatty was informed that Gunston was (likely) an act, so it's rather nice of him to have played along.
So powerful and entertaining. Powerful because Gunston's character doesn't allow for further deprecation is he did it all himself. Then the interviewee needs to come down a few notches. That's where the fun is, the further they are on a pedestal the more uncomfortable it is for them.
It was practiced "fool". And Warren Beatty seemed genuinely captivated. When Gunston asked him the question about Carly Simon, you could almost hear Beatty thinking "not another question about 'You're so vain' " but then Gunston comes out with the Impossible Dream! After that, it didn't matter that there were "real" journalists at the press conference, Beatty just seemed to want to talk to Gunston. btw: did Norman Gunston marry Dame Edna Everage and they produced Ali G?!
Apart from the fact that Warren Beatty was, apparently aware that Norman was an ""Act"", there is absolutely no doubt who was the most intelligent of the two...
It's so weird when you look at an old man now and when you look at him 30-40 years back : he was bloody sexy! Etc : Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, James Caan, Robert De Niro and many many more
Norman Gunston was a character played by actor and comedian Gary McDonald in the 70s and early eighties on Australian TV. He was a real crack up! Gary later became famous for his role in the classic sit com Mother and son. You should look that up too mate, glad you enjoyed it!
I'm sure Beatty would've pulled a few Australian staff on the plane, he was all over the place he wouldn't even spare his friends girlfriends the coolest womaniser
I was at a Gun"n"n roses show, back in like 92ish, and Axl tore into this guy for about 15min ...all about being a dirty old man, so every time I see him, I just think about that.
I was at the st.louis riot in 91. Still the most memorable show of my life.. we skipped school when axl was back in town for court and my buddy sal got his autograph in the men's room
Warren Beaty didn't have a clue who or what "Norman Gunston" was. Norman was the alter ego of actor Garry McDonald. He once asked Linda McCartney who her favourite Beatle was before she was related. She said it was Mick Jagger! She and Paul worked him out immediately and played along.
Beatty gets it late .... Sally Struthers got it early ( check her interview out). There's a moment Warren Beatty realises he's been taken the p*ss out of, but he goes along with it.
@germanicelt ah well, Brad Pitt looks like Robert Redford when he was younger check out The way we were i swear it's like your looking right at Brad Pitt
Brilliant. I hate these kind of interviews where they try to take the piss out of famous people, its kind of a nasty, mean spirited thing to do really . But Warren Beatty was way too smart for this guy and he played him like a schmuck.
swampgirl62 No, I don't think he got it. There was never anything nasty or mean spirited about Norman Gunston. He parodied exactly what Jack Hooper is talking about. Yep, Warren Beatty was on the ball and good enough to play along, certainly not playing him for a schmuck. Jack, you seem to know a lot about Beatty. Now I think you need to find out more about (my countryman) Norman Gunston, the little Ausssie bleeder.
wooosh.....wooosh.....one after the other.....over his head the lot.....though beaty is no fool....he was like most americans ...bereft of any inkling as to what sarcasm is.
I’m a yank and l lived in Australia from 73 to 76 I loved Norman he was ahead of his time as a comedian

Randy Feltface is pretty good with his crowd interactions. But Norman Gunston was definitely a legend!
"You've made 13 films in 15 years... so what do you do for a living?" Lmao
Absolutely the best years of my life!
The look on his face at the end had me in hysterics, amused confusion at Norman and his shaving cuts lol
Too funny 😁 we need more comedy like this these days!
You got to love Norman Gunston.
Totally one of Australia’s best love his interviews
Australia’s Johnny Carson. That always cracked me up the way he delivered that line.
3 Aussie comedy legends....
Paul Hogan ( Crocodile Dundee), Barry Humphries ( Dame Edna Everage) and Garry Macdonald ( Norman Gunston).
Respect!
You are right. all brilliant.
Humphries, and Sir Les!
Absolutely spot on!!!
Scratch Paul Hogan.
@@Mrc172 Paul Hogan is hands down the best to ever come from Australia...

It's a regional old school accent he's doing too.
@@arconeagain Is it a Melbournian accent of some description?

He's struggling with Norms accent as well.

I've just discovered this phenomenon - It makes me wonder what else is out there ! Fantastic -poor old Warren didn't know what hit him.
he played along with it
A national treasure
This moment was mentioned in Australian film critic David Stratton's autobiography (good read, I recommend it). Beatty was informed that Gunston was (likely) an act, so it's rather nice of him to have played along.
Who else could crack up a jet-lagged Hollywood icon in the 70's? WHO?
Norman Gunston could probably do it.
Classic stuff from Norm, Beaty played it well. The impossible dream lol
These Are priceless aren't they ? He never crawled up anyone's arse - what's lacking in today's interviews , wit
Priceless 👌👊🏻👊🏻
So powerful and entertaining. Powerful because Gunston's character doesn't allow for further deprecation is he did it all himself. Then the interviewee needs to come down a few notches. That's where the fun is, the further they are on a pedestal the more uncomfortable it is for them.
Nailed it
You got to be kidding me, that would be awesome to see!
Check out his interview with Sally Struthers, it's brilliant.
Gunston got quite the set of brass monkeys! These hard to deal with people loved him!
You want to see the clip when he got a dislocated shoulder taunting a Sumo…
Norman One of a kind !
It was practiced "fool".

For sure S B Cohen studied Gunston before he came up with Ali G!
I think Martin Short must have seen Norman Gunston and morphed him into Jiminy Glick ;-)
Practised.
@@arconeagain You may be correct! (or correst?!)
Ali G has his moments but he's FAR from the Genius of Norman
I liked the references to women and funny business,as like Norman I don't know much about either.
"Have you got with any Australian women" No, have you?" "Oh, no!"
funny interview!
Apart from the fact that Warren Beatty was, apparently aware that Norman was an ""Act"", there is absolutely no doubt who was the most intelligent of the two...
beatty easily the clever one with his usual wit and charm
norman gunston what a laugh!
one of the most handsome men so nice and gentle in "Heaven can Wait"
And what about Warren?
Just bloody classic 🤣 Equally as good as the Sally Struthers one.
Classic!!!
Warren's doing a great job here.
His name is Gary McDonald and he played an early character similar, but much funnier than Borat in the 1970s.
Nowhere near as funny as Borat, but does give one a slight chuckle every now and then..😉
In the last second there he finally understood the assignment.
An institution is what he is .... Norman Gunston ... world famous ... best dressed Australian ...
I love how the camera is so crisp on Norman & so hazy on whatshisname 😅
Warren Beatty is sooooo sexy here. Gotdamn! ♥__♥
This video is hilarious. LMFAO *saves to favorites*
in Australia, English is Warren Beatty's second language.
Hilarious as ever.
Aussie Gold
lol this is supposed to be funny for all who think that its a serious interview. its just a live comedy. like snl.
That is my grandfather!
Do you have good hair like Grandpa Warren?
You are so Vain!! HAHA
classic gunston
It's so weird when you look at an old man now and when you look at him 30-40 years back : he was bloody sexy! Etc : Al Pacino, Warren Beatty, James Caan, Robert De Niro and many many more
And..... Norman Gunston! What a stud!
Brando
Look! Norm's still got it
Beatty: described by UK journalist Julie Burchill as "the Johnny Appleseed of sperm"
Beatty seemed totally confused for the entire interview I think!
he was high, smoked a lot of weed back when he was young!
He's so vain
Called jet lag.
he played along with the gag
There was a rumour you were coming out to replace Gerard Kennedy of division four. ROFL
That line got me too, Lol Gary McDonald (Norman Gunston) was brilliant 😁
Me too. Passed myself.
Outstanding, and brilliant 🤣
He save the best till last - a reference no Yank would know!
Sasha Baron Cohen, without the racism
Didn't anyone warn him who he was about to be interviewed by? Poor Warren, gotta feel sorry for him?

I'm a 27 year old Canadian can anymore fill me in on who is this guy (lol)?

Norman Gunston completely wrong footed Warren Beatty who was a expecting a reference to Carly Sinon's song You're so Vain.
I'm sure Beatty would've pulled a few Australian staff on the plane, he was all over the place he wouldn't even spare his friends girlfriends the coolest womaniser
Yes bit a gentleman never talks about it so he denied....
haha. i wonder if these celebrities know he's just playing a character and he's a comedian?
Looks a bit like Jim Morrison here even sounds like him.
oh check out the chevy chase interview
I agree, i always thought that about Gary McDonald!
If only Warren saw who Norman (Garry) was married to in real life.
For those who don't know, Norman Gunston is an act. He isn't real.
classic LOL , pricking the ego of the pompous .
@TheAndycandy Who, Warren Beatty? Does he know?
@SDSen 1976, the after he did Shampoo.

Beatty also very funny.
Norman Gunston was 25 years ahead of Ali G.
Is this Guntson show unscripted? Like, Warren didn't know he was on?

what is sexy about him here? his looks or personality? im just curious
both. he always had those boyish good looks and charming witty personality which made him a superstar to superstud.
Always found Norman a bit embarrassing , love Warren thought , one of my favorite movies of all time is Bullworth starring him
@Cassie86R Not even Brad Pitt?
