Colin: I agree with you that Console players who prefer playing on consoles won't migrate to PC. But PC Gaming Revenue has been more than Console gaming revenue for the last 10 years in a row. Not more than just PlayStation, ALL consoles combined. And Mobile alone dwarfs them both, combined. And PlayStation didn't 'make' 30 billion dollars last year. Sony as a whole including all divisions(Playstation being 1 of them) "made", as in profit, of ~980 billion yen (~$6.3 billion) in FY2023. (If you include OCI, then it'll be ~7.65 bil $.) Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling Sony-published game in 'History' and it sold 12 million copies in 4 months on both PC and PS5 combined. This same year, Palworld sold 15 million copies just on Steam. In less than "five weeks". Steam IS a behemoth. And PC platform even more so. Activision's major platform was PC as Bobby Kotick reported during that trial. CDPR's main platform for sales is also PC. Capcom's most sales are also on PC. Steam has more active players than PlayStation. And I can go on and on. EDIT: Helldivers2 is fastest-selling. I mistyped it as highest earlier.
Any decision keeping games off Steam is a bad one. Sony has nothing to gain by keeping games exclusive. PC gamers aren't going to buy a PS5. Who willingly wants to play games at 30fps.
Both of the recent GOW games have sold more than Helldivers 2, and Ragnarok hasn't hit PC yet. It may be the fastest selling Sony-published game though, I haven't checked that, but it's definitely not the best selling, even in the last generation.. yet
I still can’t understand how Colin fails to grasp why his analysis of achievement/trophy unlock percentage is wrong. He is using a percentage to grasp total engagement which makes no sense. For example let’s say Pentiment had 1 million players (people who launched the game) on Xbox and only 10% made it to Act 2 that’s 100k players who made it to that point. Now let’s say Pentiment sold 100k on PlayStation (assuming it would be lower because cost of entry is much greater) and 50% unlocked the trophy for reaching Act 2 that’s only 50k who made it to that point. PlayStation may have a higher levels of engagement per user but Xbox would have orders of magnitude of more engagement with the game and thus more monetizable players.
Well explained and I agree with your theory and logic. However, how can you have more monetisable players in Xbox if they are already signed up to Gamepass? If there is a Pentiment sequel, the engaged players across PlayStation would be more likely to buy it outright resulting in more money for the studio. There might be more players who play the sequel on Xbox, but they would lose money since they aren't paying anything more on top of Gamepass (especially if they just renew and freeze like Dustin did for HellBlade 2)
@@ANGELOFDARKification Using Pentiment was a poor example for that point in particular, it’s more applicable to a game with microtransactions or further monetization after the initial purchase or download. That was the point I was trying to make I just used the wrong game as an example.
He does get that… he isn’t saying the numbers show that MORE people in total finish the game on PlayStation. He is emphasizing that the metric of “we got 4 million players on this game” is fucking worthless because 3.9 million of them clearly boot it up and immediately close it and are completely and utterly irrelevant. Your player count means nothing if they don’t actually play it, and clearly they much more actively play the games on PlayStation.
@@rappleby91Player count does mean something when the game bombs on PS5 like Pentiment or Hi-Fi Rush did. When the denominator is that small, it’s very misleading to use a percentage. It also shows that these games might not exist without GamePass. And Sony has said they will be focusing more on engagement going forward, so take it up with them.
@@rappleby91 normally when he presents this information he frames it as some grand revelation and that it is a negative impact of gamepass, and even once said that it must be demoralizing for game devs for no one on Xbox to finish your game, that’s where I disagree with him. It’s fairly obvious that by lowering the barrier of entry more people will check it out but bounce off immediately, however the more people you get through the door the more likely you will have a greater number that stay and finish the game. If I was a game dev I’d be happy with 5x the players I would have had if the barrier was greater and sure a lower percentage finished it but in totality a greater number of people seen my work then would have.
dude, the day exclusives leave nintendo, im not buying a nintendo console ever again. why would I wanna play fire emblem and and zelda on a weak hardware?

It’s just so hard, and I’m having fun!
Get the Dualsense edge. I'm using it atm to win all those horse races in Witcher 3. I remapped the x button to the back so I can control the right stick camera. It's a night and day difference. In fact, any game that uses x to run is much better with the back pedals. This will be an advantage on GTA VI in the future cause you know they won't use L3 to run on that game, no way.
I think the last time I went to the IGN homepage was over 10 years ago. I listen to Gamescoop every once in a while on UA-cam but its been a long time since the IGN homepage was a daily visit.
I used to love me some IGN and game scoop! The corporatism slowly pushed me away. One of my pet peeves was the arbitrary time limits on podcasts and conversations.
The trophy/achievement percentages are lower on Xbox because it has more players, which the percentage is based on. 3 million people played hi-fi rush on gamepass so the percentage of people who done a certain achievement will be lower. It’s the reason why GTA 5 and Red Dead platinum trophies are 0.01% it’s because the amount of people who have unlocked the trophy is insane compared to total players. People who bought hifi rush on PlayStation wanted to play it where as it free on game pass so loads more will download it.
Chris talking about wanting to watch a movie but not. Sorry, dude, I came to this realization a few years ago. The truth is you don’t want to anymore. You just think you do. You used to love doing that stuff and you still have the shadows of that enjoyment left, but the sad truth is you don’t, which is why you end up not watching stuff. Same thing happens to me with gaming. I feel like I should game more because I think I want to, but I’m just stuck in that old line of thinking, and sometimes I go months without playing games. It’s part of growing up
If you love something you make the time for it plain and simple. As adults with responsibilities we may not be able to play for 8 hours a day but we are able to make some time. That may mean some games like FF VII remakes may take longer to finish for some but that’s ok if you are enjoying your time with the game.
I've recently started thinking people who hate exclusives as much as they do is because they need something to justify their purchase of this or that box (or money sunk into a decent PC). Look at Xbox players right now. They're losing their exclusives to a rival platform and probably wondering what's really the point in continuing to invest in the Xbox ecosystem when they can have all that and more on PlayStation, eventually. It's also why I believe console only players are upset about titles coming to PC. Edit: I wanna clarify that of course people want to justify their purchases. I meant, if you bought one platform over another, for whatever reason, and you see that the rival platform is having hit after hit banger after banger and you're cut off from that I can see why someone would start to think exclusives are dumb.
1:06:12 I think someone who works 8 to 5 should be able to find average 2 hours for entertainment time during the week days unless you are not spending 3 to 4 hours per day for commuting. Even 2 hours commuting is too much. If commuting is too long, I think that is the problem. Personally If there is something I want to play, I just play it. If there is nothing to play, guess I'll do something else.
The Dualsense Edge is awesome. I use the back left paddle for L3 since I hate clicking the stick in to run. Right paddle is either dodge or jump. Makes a world of difference once you get accustomed to using them. Edit: also wanted to add it comes with a much longer USB C cord plus it has rubber grips on the sides.
I’ve thought Lego Killzone would be fun as soon as the Horizon leak happened. Being able to switch between third and first person would be a nice addition to the Lego aesthetic. I’ve also thought for a long time that Lego games in the diorama style would be great in VR.
Every time Dustin talks about having to charge his Dualsense Edge, I’m still flabbergasted that he doesn’t just leave it connected to the PS5 at all times, or just take the 5 seconds to plug it in after each use. That being said, the Edge is awesome and everyone should buy one. And no wonder Chris couldn’t get used to using the Xbox Elite controller, the paddles on those are fucking atrocious. If you want a controller with paddles for Xbox, buy a SCUF or literally any other controller.
Sorry to say Chris but EA have control over the Saboteur and seem to not want it playable on modern systems. It’s one of the many games not compatible on modern Xbox consoles
I think Colin is grossly understating and overstating the PC market and the console market. When Colin mentions PC gaming isn't a new thing and has been around for 40 years .... He's not wrong, but the key difference is, the markets used to be much more segregated with both platforms really having their own specific games on each. Console gaming had much more of n identity and you did not regularly see the same number of games there coming to console, also coming to PC. During the 360 and ps3 days things began to pick up, but this was also was at a time when PC would often get console ports of games months if not a year later, but also was tagged with the popular "PC ports are always busted" kinda sentiment. During the xbox one and ps4 generation, PC ports greatly improved and almost every console game was coming to PC at the same time and each one having an incredible amount of graphical and gameplay settings and tweaking. The thing people often forget is that the PC side of things is very dynamic, with some egoing to PC for gaming due to the high fidelity and performance options, while others, choosing PC isn't so much about the power and how expensive their machine is and don't mind playing games at lower settings, In fact Ghosts PC port tells us and shows just that. Se have many videos showing off the game running with a Nvidia 1060 graphics card which close to a 8 year old card as well as being one of the lower end models for that specific generation of graphics card and the game surprisingly looks decent for needing to turn down the settings quite a bit. And one last thing, this idea that people don't want to get into PC gaming due to price, while this is true, it's actually not as much of an issue in the sense that for some, they will have a console until they save enough and while console gaming is for sure still easier and straight forward, PC gaming really is much easier to get into and any kind of complications or hinders, don't really factor in when your child and your favorite streamer is always and only gaming on PC. Things like Fortnite streamers have greatly influenced the kids of today to gravitate toward PC gaming rather than console gaming and sometimes towards mobile gaming until they can get into PC gaming. That being said, I think consoles will remain a thing for sometime if not always, but we'll have to get more data and see how the next several years what the trends lean toward. I'm also with the mindset that for some, they might aggressively move to PC, only to go back to console gaming down the road once they have had their fill and the excitement of the initial PC boom dies down, or at the very least leads to them going back and forth from PC to Console as I do personally.
Hmm, SIE London were more than just the leftovers of Team Soho. They were also the last remnant of psygnosis, ie one of the teams who helped build Playstation. Admittedly the main was SIE Liverpool, but the callous disregard by Sony of their own history is upsetting. The studio has historically been profitable, had a 1st party new IP cooking, and were the good soliders when some success with Eye Toy and Singstar led them to being boxed into a repeating dev cycle by the higher ups. Yet if this was Microsoft, oh no then it's a travesty that an unprofitable studio is shuttered 🙄
Run the math PC players, steam accounts, highest games sold industry wide. PC is not what people say also the numbers are comparative to console numbers!! Data can lie
Minecraft 300 million GTA 5 200 million LOL free but 100 million active users CS 1 and 2, 1 million COD 20 million Tetris 100 million Wii sports 82 million When you look at these numbers it tells me there is not 3 billion gamers as executive think!! Phones are different PC is not the golden goose for sony or anyone. Example there are only1 billion steam accounts but there is no limit to how many accounts you can have. If we do the math on PC actual gamers maybe around 300 million that's generous. Console combined switch 130 million, ps4 140 million, xbox 40 million and ps5 50 million, I would say there may be more gamers on console!! Research executives, live service how many players?? Can you take there time and money?? Probably not, reduce budgets it's not hard to figure out how to improve the industry or your profits if you understand the true numbers not pretend data
3:16:00 - sony doesn't need to purchase arrowhead because helldivers has not proven long term viability. Sony should instead focus on making their bungie purchase worth it and perhaps using bungie staff to support partners like arrowhead
Shift Up CEO and co-founder Kim Hyeong-tae still holds a majority of shares in the studio with Tencent being the second-largest shareholder. Together, the two parties control over two thirds of Shift Up's shares. It would be difficult for Sony to buy them.
Lol you do not need to spend $2000 on a PC to be able to play games. $900 on a pre-built with an RX 6700 or RTX 4060 will give equivalent performance to a PS5, plus you can do infinitely more beyond gaming with a PC compared to a console. And it is not as difficult to own and use as often described. Once you have the gaming PC, whenever a new generation of consoles is released, all you need to do is install a new GPU for $300-$400, which is quite easy to do and it's less expensive than buying a new console. You don't have to buy an entirely new PC to keep up.
I'm playing Nier Automata right now, and Colin's consternation about trying to find help online for Animal Well resonates with me on that. Most games that I look for help online, I'll get the same answer just about everywhere. I swear with Nier Automata, I can lookin 5 different places and get 5 conflicting answers....and that game's been out for 7 years.
Dustin's talk about hunting platinums tainting a game for him makes the think that the Nier Automata platinum would have broken him. But I am pretty sure he used the trophy shop....and with 3 trophies left that will require HOURS of grinding, I am thinking of using the trophy shop too.
Gotta love the write in about why we want PS3 emulation saying "these games will likely be remastered soon anyway. Based on what? Those games are all over 11 years old now and none of them have been remastered, what makes you think they will be "soon"?
It wasn't horrible...but in the end there were a lot of problems with it. It looked better than some PS5 games do now. My main problems with it were the horrible quick time event boss fights, the horrible contextual stealth mechanics and that one room in the basement where you just had to fight wave upon wave of redcoats. Ending where it did also made it feel like more of a prologue than an actual full game. If Sony owns the IP, they could give it to a studio like Blue Point or Bend to make a sequel, but I get the feeling most of Sony's studios now want nothing to do with IP they didn't create in house.
I never understood the hype for the first game. I actually like "walking simulators like Edith Finch and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture" because they had interesting stories. Hellblade 1 basically was a walking simulator with a boring story and terrible combat thrown in. I found it to be very buggy to...I was trapped in an infinite loop on a ladder for about 10 minutes at one point.
I had to look up Skibbidy Toilet after Micah mentioned it on an episode of Summon Sign. I had absolutely no idea why that even became a meme. But them discussing it as a Gen Alpha thing tracks. My nephew is addicted to Roblox...and Skibby Toilet seems like it would appeal to the same group that thinks Roblox is the best thing ever.
When talking about the stuck PS3 games, Im shocked nobody mentioned Metal Gear Solid 4 or the original Demon's Souls. One game Colin mentioned I would love to be playable today is 3D Dot Game Heroes. 1 downloadable Cacpcom game is still locked to PS3 and Xbox 360 that I really want and that is Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. It had a banger soundtrack and was the first fighting game to ever feature rollback netcode.
My platinum horror story was with Mad Max. There are like 300+ collectibles of all type whether it's outpost cleared, item collected and all I died as I cleared an outpost, got the message outpost cleared, drove back to it and collected the flag or whatever. At the end of the game I had all the trophies for the individual type of collectibles, but not the one for the cumulative number of collectibles. Dying made one counter not increase. They could have easily fixed it and awarded the trophy, but they never did.
Craig Ferguson and his band of loony characters was always amazing. Also, I never liked Seth Meyers on SNL but his show is actually funnier than The Daily Show.
I mean this will all due respect but Colin is truly an idiot sometimes. If 10% of 2 million players complete a task on PlayStation vs 7% of 5 million players on Xbox who do the same thing… which player base had more people engage with the game??? Colin presents his math in such a way that’ll always confirm his biases. There obviously would be more overall players on Xbox due to the lower barrier of entry. Same for the drop off. However, the fact the overall number of players of a game is greater on a console so many love to brag is being outsold 3:1 or 5:1, means that more Xbox players are actually engaging more with the games on the service than PS players who bought it. Colin is lucky he never needs to defend the mathematics of his points against people who actually track what he says. Half of his stats are only half truths. Especially when we don’t have all the information.

Sony as a whole including all divisions(Playstation being 1 of them) "made", as in profit, of ~980 billion yen (~$6.3 billion) in FY2023. (If you include OCI, then it'll be ~7.65 bil $.)
Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling Sony-published game in 'History' and it sold 12 million copies in 4 months on both PC and PS5 combined.
Bro out here spitting fax.
I've swapped between Sony and Microsoft, generationally, since the ps2/Xbox. Im looking forward to finally joining the PC master race next gen.
Any decision keeping games off Steam is a bad one. Sony has nothing to gain by keeping games exclusive. PC gamers aren't going to buy a PS5. Who willingly wants to play games at 30fps.
Pony fanboy are stupid, no matter how much fact and info you show them they still won't understand.
Ghost of Tsushima is the best PlayStation exclusive (along with Bloodborne), that's why it's more popular on PC than your personal favorites Colin. 😉
Colin thinks Jimmy Fallon is the funniest guy in late night ?LOL
All I could think of the Dustin not "edging" in awhile was no kidding!! Congratulations on the new son/daughter to the clan! Lmao
Chris's face during the "edging" lol I was right there with him
dude, the day exclusives leave nintendo, im not buying a nintendo console ever again. why would I wanna play fire emblem and and zelda on a weak hardware?
Collin talking about about Steam not being big is so funny.
He really is still just a console warrior at heart.
yeah that made me chuckle.
Eh, he backed up his thoughts. So....
Oh man. As someone who got the FF15 platinum I can definitely relate to Dustin. I love that game, but that stupid “distance traveled on foot”trophy was a pain. I ended up wrapping rubber bands around the analog sticks so that my character ran in circles and went to the grocery store. Came home and the trophy was popped.
I definitely didn’t love it. I found that world to be way too empty with a completely nonsensical story at launch. It’s not FFXIII bad, but I definitely didn’t enjoy it
I remember the fishing trophy being a pain in the ass
I don’t understand doing things you don’t like or don’t want to do to get an intangible 🏆
@@JustinLatham9 times out of 10 I would agree with you, but when you check the trophy list and realize you’re only 4 or 5 trophies away from the platinum…
@@Not_Liquid I can follow that rationale
Colins Saudi Arabia conversation was 100% on point and chilling at the same time. Also LSM not wanting to put the company “in a certain position”, by opting out on money from gaming companies, is why I am here. Good for you Colin.
Yep degenerate western society is the only option, your policy should be focused on gays women and foreigners. And him acting like the US haven’t been meddling in foreign affairs for nearly a century is laughable
Great show! I’m mostly an achievement hunter on Xbox, and I feel that guy on the write ins pain. I have 480 completions on Xbox and I’m adduced to TrueAchievements. 30 platinums on PS, but I love those diamond achievement pops. I’m hooked. I’m 46 years old and know I need to give it up lol.
Does anyone else get weird audio cutouts? I can’t hear Dustin’s answer here. 3:22:37
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is great movie, with great worldbuilding side stories, and with great villain character ...
I’d think Peer knows how to run his business.
Journey is still a 4 hour experience I’ll never forget. Only played through it one time and that was like 10 years ago.
Wanted to give you guys a shout out, for giving me something to look forward to each Monday. Love you guys, and what you do here each week!
If anything could make me laugh at 7 in the morning getting ready for work it's discussing edging tactics.
Exclusives absolutely matter. Colin is lying to yall. He def cares about them but acts like he doesn’t. I read right through it
They matter. But a game isnt better because it's exclusive. Other than the extra emotional bias they can come with.
An Xbox game will never have the cultural impact of a playstation game. The media is way too Sony focused for it to happen.
@@antiamericangraffiti 100% true man. It helps justify your purchase when you have the hit exclusives.
That 4 seasons impersonation by Chris was so too funny
I love the image of an official Nintendo building having a security system full of piranha plants and thwomps.
The first 5 minutes almost killed me, I laughed so hard I couldn't catch my breath. It was great being represented by Chris's reactions
The edging DualSense?
@@PetrifyingPumpkinsno it's the edgiestest dualsense
I understand that London Studio may not have made any large games recently or ever, but it’s still sad for all those people who lost their jobs.
This was the fucking funniest podcast in ages. Never change guys. Love the dumb humour.
'Hes much more horrifying in motion'
Uncharted being so low isn't surprising, remember the first 3 aren't available on PC and people don't like missing the whole story.
I'm glad none of y'all are in charge of school curriculums. 😅
A sidenote to Chris: The Saboteur got re-released on steam a few months back - it even runs great on the deck!
Minecraft 300 million
GTA 5 200 million
LOL free but 100 million active users
CS 1 and 2, 1 million
COD 20 million
Tetris 100 million
Wii sports 82 million
When you look at these numbers it tells me there is not 3 billion gamers as executive think!!
The ant is back at the colony smoking a square telling the others, "I've seen some shit man"
3:16:00 - sony doesn't need to purchase arrowhead because helldivers has not proven long term viability.
It would be stupid of GTA VI had GTA Online built into the single player. That would absolutely ruin the product and I assume Rockstar knows that.

Very sad to see that Sacred Symbols is predominantly edging community. I was under the assumption that this was clearly a gooning community 😂
I like The Order 1886. I was looking forward to a sequel that could have addressed some of the problems with it.

Dustin's review of Hellblade 2 is exactly how I feel.

If I really enjoy a game I will go for the Plats. Most Tales of games give me that enjoyment. And I can agree some trophies can sour the experience.

My platinum horror story was with Mad Max. There are like 300+ collectibles of all type whether it's outpost cleared, item collected and all
I died as I cleared an outpost, got the message outpost cleared, drove back to it and collected the flag or whatever.
