I am a father to two wonderful boys, Nicholas and Alexander. I am a bike shop owner/bike fitter/coach in San Marcos - San Elijo Hills... and Hall of Fame Ultra Cyclist - of 3 different cycling organizations.
I climbed 1,000,000 feet in 2015 in only 10 months (legitimate gain no iPhone Strava app or Elevation Correction which gives you more gain). I repeated 1M feet of climbing in 2016 and 2018 and 2019 I have also Everested 9X -- 29,029 feet in one single ride #everesting .
I currently hold the record for the shortest distance Everest in North and South America 29,200 feet in 78 miles.
I have been named a legendary Ultra Cyclist- a title I consistently work hard to live up to because of what it means in the small ultra cycling community.
I completed 2- Person Race Across America (RAAM) in 2007. I have finished the Furnace Creek 508 SOLO (508 miles 35,000 feet of climbing non-stop race) six consecutive years in 2006, 2007 (Fixed Gear) 2008, 2009, 2010 2011, then came back in 2013 (tandem) and 2014 (Tandem) 2015 (tandem) and 2017 as a Two Person Mixed setting the course record with Lori Hoechlin. A total of 11 Furnace Creek/Silver State 508 finishes with a PR of 28 hours 52 minutes. I was inducted in the Furnace Creek 508 Hall of Fame class of 2011.
I am a Trans Iowa finisher (only 57 finishers out of 250 participants in the last five years at the time). Trans-Iowa is 320 mile (course varies yearly) totally unsupported gravel race held under adventure racing format.
I have also attained Super Randonneur (200km, 300km, 400km and 600km unsupported events) multiple years. I am a cycling coach with clients ranging from endurance cyclists, competitive triathletes, and beginners just entering the sport of cycling.
And now that you read all of that - I am also just an everyday Joe, just like you. I own a bike shop work and 60 hours a week, have a family, have a coaching business and try to do ultra events on limited training time. I’ve never been a professional cyclist. I do what I do out of passion for the sport. I suffer just like you do. I get it done out of pure stubbornness, pride and perseverance.

Does it matter where the actual cables comes out from the frame? I ask because I want to use a mechanical groupset on an "electronic only" frame. I got the read derailleur sorted out. My front derailleur exit is below the derailleur hanger and the bottom bracket. Have you had this scenario before? Thanks.

Cable angle matters for efficiency but it should work. Unfortunately, without seeing the frame and the cable angle I can’t say with 100% certainty

Ah man so sorry to hear that. I know the feeling. If I had a SRAM bike in the shop I would shoot another video just for you. My heart breaks when I can’t help someone.
But honestly, I can’t stand SRAM and their terrible front derailleur shifting and other things. They have never gotten the FD to work properly not even on their electronic groups. It’s the main reason they keep promoting 1X drivetrains. And why the pro road teams that ride SRAM keep trying 1X they can’t take the risk of dropping a chain.
I have never sold a SRAM groupset to anyone that didn’t specifically ask for one. I’ve never sold a SRAM equipped bike unless they specifically asked for it.
Shimano front derailleur is where it’s at. I have changed quite a few bikes that were SRAM equipped and put a Shimano front derailleur on it.

I got the bike to shift perfectly while on the working stand. It is a Rival 22 FD "Yaw". On the road I drop the chain 1 out of every 5 shifts going from the big chainring to the small (not under heavy load). Weird... Any ideas? Thank you! If I was in you area I would take it to your shop 🙂

Also for more context, it is a Shimano chain on a SRAM drivetrain, but that works well on my other bike. The cranks are Rival.

Maybe close the gap on the inner limit screw a touch. Long term I would move away from SRAM. Their front derailleurs suck. It’s why they’ve been trying for years to go electronic and 1X. They know they can’t make a god front derailleur. Often times I put a Shimano front derailleur on SRAM bikes to get rid of all the headaches

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Thanks for the feedback. I have gone full circle... 2x to 1x to 2x and I think I'm going back to 1x - I just love knowing that my chain is not going to drop... It is scary to shift that FD on a hard climb. Gracias!

@@jameslefleur1970 furthermore maybe there is something wrong how you shift.
Before hitting a “hard climb” you should shift the rear derailleur one or two harder gears FIRST then you shift the front derailleur to the small ring.
I say 1 to 2 gears because it depends what type of Crankset ratio you are riding. For example if you’re riding a 53/39 that’s only 14 teeth so you may only need to shift one harder gear in the back if you’re riding a compact Crankset, 50/34 then that’s a 16 tooth difference so you may want to shift two gears in the back.
No matter what you always shift the rear derailleur before your shift the front derailleur. If you have too much of an extreme angle from your big ring in the front to your last three cogs in the back, there is a high probability that you will drop your chain.
Lastly you always lighten your pedal stroke when shifting. Whether it be front derailleur or the back but especially the front going from big ring to little ring.
No one shifts the front derailleur on a hard climb from big to little. You shouldn’t even be in the big ring on a “hard climb” unless you can summit in it.
I see this far too often with new cyclists they stay in the big ring too long, hoping that with the momentum today will be the day they can make it up that “hard climb” and then they realize they can’t. They are in their big ring and their biggest cog in the back on an extreme angle, they go to shift and the chain drops . It’s going to drop there’s nothing any mechanic can do to adjust that front derailleur to keep the chain from dropping. There’s nothing that is holding that front derailer mechanically to keep your chain from falling into the frame when there is that much tension on the chain.
I hope this helps. And if you knew all of this already then it’s time to switch to Shimano. Anyway, I usually do these long responses so that anyone that clicks onto this video can see these comments they aren’t always directed to the viewer. I’m responding to at the moment.
