Dean Maryin was a notoriously early to bed early to rise person. And also known to his co stars as someone who was a teetotaler on the set. Glasses were filled with water of tea. That he could act slightly crocked so convincingly is testimony to just how much of a gifted talented actor he was.

He read the cue cards because he never rehearsed. That was one of the conditions he had for doing the show. It had nothing to do with him drinking.
