  • In this video we travel away from Edinburgh, to the historic Glamis Castle.
Home to the famous Bowes-Lyon family, Glamis has stood since the 15th century, but has been a site of historical significance for over 1,000 years.
This, of course, means the Castle is haunted, really haunted. In this episode we explore the famous and not so-famous stories of this incredible location.

I just found out about 1 year ago, that I am the 9th great GGrandaughter of Janet Douglas. Such a sad story. I had a copy of a painted portrait of her, but never knew about what happened to her. I was shocked when I read about her false accusations, which I learned resulted of her burning at the stake , outside of Edinburg Castle. Even though this happened 400 years ago, it made me so sad.

There has been alot of accounts accusing Queen Elizabeth, aka The Queen Mum, aka Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, was a scary woman. Now, if you grew up living in the "most haunted" castle in Scotland, you would become scary or completely traumatized yourself.

Shakespeare took a bit of liberty with history when it came to "The Scottish Play".
Glamis Castle was not yet in existence when Duncan was killed in battle by Macbeth's forces in 1340. Macbeth went on to rule for many years, his castle located in Dunsinane.

…so, the mention of ‘Grey Beardy’ got me remembering an old Galloway/ Ayrshire (?) folk tale that I recall my mother telling me in the 1970’s. Not a ghost story, just one of those folk tales.
Story goes that in a long, warm summer, a couple with a small child lived in a rural farmhouse. Every evening the child would sit on the back step of the cottage, having soup and bread for dinner whilst his parents sat at their dinner table and had their evening meal. On more than one occasion the parents had heard their son ‘chatting away to himself’ and referring to ‘Grey Beardie’, often saying “get over to your own side of the plate Grey Beardie”.
One evening, whilst following their usual routine, the father and mother heard their son saying “get over to your own side of the plate Grey Beardie, go on, back you your side of the plate…” This time the boy’s father got up to check on his son. He saw his son, sitting on the step, bowl in his lap and an adder (Britain’s only venomous snake) with it’s head halfway across the top of the bowl of soup. The man slapped the bowl of soup out of the boy’s hand, knocking the adder to the ground with it. The man then quickly killed the snake whilst the boy cried hysterically on the doorstep.
The story would have it that the boy refused to eat again and became increasingly withdrawn until he passed away.
‘Grey Beardie’ had obviously been a daily summertime visitor to the boy and they had become quite accustomed to each other’s company.
Anybody else from SW Scotland / Scotland remember being told this folk tale?

This is a fantastic video, I have just visited Glamis and am captivated by the ghost stories. I did hear that it was the Ogilvie clan who were locked in the hidden room and starved to death when they were trying to escape the Lindsays though and not the Lindsays as you suggest here. To be honest though, I have heard many slightly different versions of the various ghost stories of Glamis so perhaps no one really knows for sure.

I would like to think that tragic circumstances leave an impression inside the stone and wood monolith of a castle where terrible absolute power reigned. We need to know where horrible deeds were done and who was the human monster who performed them to the victim who leads us to them.

Must take a trip there in the Summer, my mum was born in Blairgowrie, her mum, my grandmother, worked at Glamis, in service, for many years, and regularly saw the then Queen and our late Queen 👸 in the grounds often , she always talked about how haunted Glamis was, but wish I’d recorded the stories, so I asked my mum last week and she said my Grandmother HAD encountered a Grey Lady, whilst in service. Who or what it was my mum couldn’t remember.

I visited Glamis in the last millenium. I was with a group of students, we were in Scotland for foreign study, and had gone there for a side trip. A friend of mine and I had gotten separated from our group. We wound up in parts of the castle that were off limits to tourists. We walked up a stone spiral staircase which had many doors. We chose one and walked into a room with magnificent tapestries on the walls and an ancient fireplace. The furniture looked very old. It was a bedroom, but nothing fancy. As we tentatively walked through the room, I heard someone whisper my name. I thought it was my friend but he swore it wasn't him. When we got to the center of the room, suddenly there was a chill, and became very cold. So cold we could see our breath. We knew were in trouble, but curiosity begged us further. There was an adjoining room, a nursery from what we could tell through the doorway. We ventured in there, and upon entering, scanned the room and there was a child's rocking chair, which was rocking all by itself! Needless to say, we hightailed it OUT from there! Eventually we found our group!
We knew nothing about Thomas at that time. Upon viewing your video, I'm now wondering if it was him?

My Granda & one of his friends worked here years ago, clearing out some things that need to be thrown out or moved somewhere else from under the Castle. One of his friends came back outside & refused to go back in & to this day still claims to have seen a Ghost of something that wasn't human. My Granda thinks he's talking about the monster.
P.S- This Channel is great! Keep up the good work 🙂

Question on this one: other versions of this say that it was Ogilvys who were locked in that room to die. You use the name Lindsay. Am I missing something?

Why did you call the late Queen Elizabeth II queen of England?, she is queen of great Britain, I know I'm nitpicking here, but she was proud of her Scottish blood, it just irked me, that's all.
