Instant Pot Not Powering Up Fix

  • The real name is the Instant Pot but I call it the Instapot. It would not turn on so I thought I would try to fix it. You need a fuse (I have a picture in the video) but once you have that and a few simple tools, you can save yourself some money. I hope it works for you. It took about an hour but the camera gear and inability to focus took up about half of that time. I hope this helps.

I have great results with "cold soldering." First, apply flux to each part you want to solder. Then heat up soldering gun, put solder on tip and melt it into a bubble. Then touch bubble of solder to the flux covered part you want to solder. The melted solder will flow into the joint. Then let it cool.

Do not attempt soldering the fuse because the heat from the cooker can easily melt the solder. Just clamp down the two fuse terminals on the wires directly

Solder is fine - but the reason my Insignia (Best Buy) model was crimped is probably because solder could soften or melt. No big deal - the fuse would probably blow at the same time the solder melted - as long as you have it wrapped with the insulation and perhaps electrical tape or wire shrink tube.

We use it a lot and it's still working after being used pretty much daily for 6 days now, I don't see it failing, and if it does I have 2 more fuses

How does a voltage detector work to detect voltage when the instant pot is de-energized if it is not plugged in? Did you plug it back in to use your continuity checker? If the fuse is bad, there will be no continuity across the fuse and the resistance will be infinity as it is open (blown). I would try to detect continuity across the thermal fuse using a DVM set to Ohms etc. No risk of shock as the voltage is super low when a DVM is in Ohms mode.
That Craftsman solder gun is for big jobs (guessing minimum 150 watt power draw, current draw greater than 1 amp at 115V AC or more) and a pencil style solder iron of 20 watts is perfect to avoid overheating electrical components on circuit boards and small electrical repairs. The only real learning curve is to sand the tip of that Craftsman solder iron with fine paper or a Scotch-Brite green pad and then carefully re-tin the tip area using fresh flux (not acid flux for electrical work) before soldering repair and new work. The tip area should always be bright and shiny from freshly applied electrical solder. If not, then clean and re-tin before soldering your work. Remember to always place solder on the heated work surface and not the tip of the solder iron or gun.

Thankfully if this doesn't resolve my problem, Costco currently has the same model on sale for what I paid for this one 3years ago at Kohls. $80. I have two IPs, the first one has indicated a possible problem from time to time. Today it heated up, and I began searing some chicken, when I noticed it wasn't hot. So I restarted the cycle and was hot again and nearing the pressure cook, when I saw the control panel was not lighted. A few unsuccessful attempts to make something light up, and decided to grab the other one and carry on. Thats when I searched and found this video. Hope the fuse I just ordered is the problem. $15 isn't terribly concerning, but it means something else is the problem. That IS concerning. Thx for the most likely solution, in the meantime.

Do not solder this fuse connection. Use an 18 to 20 guage butt connector along with a good quality pair of crimpers. The heat generated from the appliance itself can melt a soldered connection with the incorrect temperature rating.
I've watched many of these repair videos and as a licensed electrician I am appalled at the level of incompetence posted by UA-cam as a "how to not" repair video when making electrical connections. Do not twist solid fuse wires with the stranded appliance conductor either. This will result in a loose high resistance connection generating heat and possibly causing a fire. Electrical Code Books explicitly forbid soldered connections for replacement of fuses in home appliances. Follow your factory reccomendations when making this repair.
    Be safe, not sorry.

    • @99bn99
      @99bn99 3 роки тому +1

I agree with LeeBo, as far as he went. The exposed wire from the new fuse should have had properly rated heat shrink tubing over it to properly insulate the wire. The sliding sheath is there to prevent abrasion damage. You also need to learn more about soldering - heat the joint, not the solder. I hope you knew to use resin core solder, not acid core.

Thank you @Leebo6283 for this comment! I'm so glad I read it. I have the tools to solder this, but after reading your comment I decided not to. I ended up opening up the two brass clips that attached the two ends of the fuse and the wires. That took a while, but I was able to recrimp them with the new fuse without soldering. And it WORKED!!! So, another Instant Pot saved from the junk heap! I appreciated @LordCryptid 's video and link to the replacement fuse. I used that link to buy a 2 pack of fuses back in August 2022 for $5.41. When I finally got around to fixing it in September 2023, the 2 fuses now sell for $12.99! A 240% increase! Still, MUCH cheaper than a new Instant pot!
This is the second Instapot that I have fixed. I replaced a melted panel on the other one and that cost was about $14.00 ) Now if the second one blows a fuse, I'm ready to repair.
My next step? Fixing 2 Braun coffee grinders that have stopped working.

It seems to me the weakest link of Instant Pot is the power connectors. They are not the standard C15 and C16 for home appliances generating high temperature, such as pressure cookers. The connection of the IP body socket and the plug of the power cord may easily get loosened.
    See
    ua-cam.com/video/C0aLMOodVsg/v-deo.html
At 1:27 of the video explains C15 and C16 power connectors for home appliances generating high temperature, of higher heat rating 120c.

I have two questions - 1) why not simply bypass the fuse if it has the tendency to keep blowing (yes I know I guess I can answer this myself...fire hazard) 2) isn't there a fuse that will automatically reset itself when the unit cools down, so it doesn't have to continually be replaced?

You'd buy a used pressure switch for your model from eBay or from someone on the Facebook group Instant Pot Parts Swap and Sale. (Instant Pot doesn't sell that part, but people who part out IPs do.) You unscrew the bottom plate, and then it's pretty much a straightforward use of Phillips screwdriver to remove the old pressure switch and replace it with the new one. No cutting wires or crimping or soldering or anything. One wire clips onto the board, and the rest is just using the screwdriver. I replaced a pressure switch on a Duo60. C6 errors are the pressure switch, I have been told by the guy I bought the switch from. But my cooker didn't have any error. It would simply overpressurize on high pressure and open its own steam release and continuously vent, starting when the pin came up. It would run okay on low pressure, though. There are two sides to that pressure switch on the Duo or any IP that has low pressure. There is actually an adjustment screw on the top of each side (under the blob of plastic that can be pried off), but I have no idea how you'd go about adjusting the high or low pressure. You would need some pressure measuring gauge to do that accurately and safely, and it's not practical for the average person to mess with. So, try a replacement pressure switch if your cooker is not covered by warranty.

@@LordCryptid Yes, it (C6) is fixable. Usually you just install a used pressure switch purchased from someone who parts out Instant Pots. As a worst case, buy a $20 "rebuild kit" of all the wiring and circuitry in the base. Instant won't sell those parts, but numerous people buy shipping-damaged IPs and part them out.

If you have the Duo Evo Plus new model, some of those throw a C8 error after saute. There is a workaround described at PressureCookingToday, in comments and/or the article they posted about the Duo Evo Plus. Indigo Neli on UA-cam said her 8qt Duo Evo Plus heating element failed after a bunch of C8 errors, and Instant Pot replaced the base under warranty. The C8 error on Evo Plus may indicate a failing heating element, is what I wonder. Be sure to contact IP customer service if your IP is covered by a warranty.

I just killed my Instant Pot. I just bought it 2 weeks ago. I love it and I have been cooking like crazy. I just went to use it and I stupidly poured water in the pot and forgot to put the inner pot in. I caught myself a moment to late. I killed it, it’s dead! 🤪😳🤯🤬😡😱😭😭😭😭😭😭

Hi. I want to say thank you for the video as it was really helpful. I have one with no power & it was in fact the fuse and your video helped me greatly. The only thing that I wanted to share is that those type of fuses are made to clamp onto the other wire and then they are covered with heat shrink type tubes because if the wires get hot enough, the metal used to soldier the two wires together will melt & then you could have arcing and fire hazard. This fuse is specifically for low or high voltage errors/issues. It basically is the bridge between the outlet cord and the inside components. It’s hard to see when you’re just looking at the fuse. But here’s an example, I have a Lux 80, so this is the one I purchased on Amazon. You really want to look for clamps, wire nuts, especially on appliances or tools that get hot. Like the instant pot, toaster, coffee maker, hair dryer, etc. I hope this makes sense. 😊🙏

My machine does not work at all. Brand new in the box. Symptoms are: timer flashes, no heat. Tried the saute process, nothing. Tried the break-in familiarization, nothing. I have removed the board and noticed the slot for fuse 091 is missing. Is that fuse required? Or is my issue the same as your issue described in the video? Again, brand new out of the box unit.
