You are right. I use a 1.5 dci too (5 years). All i did was regular maintenance once a year. During hot summers, even if you use it with A/C on, max 5 liters per 100 km in city. Drops to 2-3 liters on highway.
I have just bought this car in the exact colour with all the bells and whistles and absolutely love it. It’s quiet on the motorway, the Bose speakers are amazing, the interior quality is the best Iv personally ever had (had a corsa and fiesta before this) and it’s so high spec. Heated seats, wireless phone charger, reversing camera with 360 view, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, easy park assist, ambient lighting etc I absolutely love it!
I don't understand why people are always fighting in the comments about which (small) car is 'best'. If you do, you are missing the most important point: any small car you can buy today is 'good'. Compare the new Clio, the 208 or a Toyota Yaris to literally ANY car you drove quite happily only 10-15 years ago. Look at what you are getting now! Any car you buy today is safe, well-equipped, easy to drive, economical and better for the environment than anything that was available only a few short years ago. If you're not old enough to have driven a car 10 years ago, then you can't even know which car is 'best' because you probably have little to no frame or reference. My first car was a 15-year old run down Suzuki Swift with a passenger door that wouldn't open anymore because the car had previously been stolen and rolled. Also, if it was at all wet outside the car would just skid around like it was dancing on an ice skating ring. Compared to THAT, this car is 'best'. Any car you can buy today is 'good'. Now what I like about this particular car is how much safety equipment it gets as standard. Some other brands make you pay extra for things like emergency brake assistance, but on the Clio you get everything even at the lowest spec. I think that's also part of the reason why it's so popular. Personally, I own a Clio Mk. 4. It's not perfect, but I like it well enough that I decided to upgrade to this car, the NEW Clio. I test drove the hybrid E-Tech version twice and I was so impressed with it that I decided to shell out for that, even if it was almost prohibitively expensive compared to the normal 100 bhp petrol version. It's quite a lot better to drive than my current car and I can't wait for it to get here. I wish there were more English language reviews of the E-Tech hybrid version because it really is quite good and very good fun to drive. It's no rocket like a Tesla, but it'll happily power away at the lights and remain very economical while doing it. I also loved the overall quality and quietness in the cabin. That's the biggest improvement over the old car for me, and what wind and tyre noise I do still get I don't really mind at all.
I have to say, my Peugeot 407 doesn't feel "bad" or "outdated" in any way (at least to me), but I really like the feel and features of these new cars. One small tidbit I don't like is the focus on sportiness, with sharp edges and wrapping everything in piano black or carbon. Give me a nice beige interior for once!
Honestly I feel like it is the best B segment car at the moment. From the build quality to the impressive dynamism (even if it isn't the best). It was a MIND BLOWING improvement compared to the mk4, for sure!
I went to see renault clio when i was buying a car and i was surprised by the good quality on the inside, i believe it has the best infotaiment screen from all the others
Build quality isn’t dictated by how soft touch the plastic are. Should be panel gaps, the processing finish of the plastic mouldings and the solidity of everything.
Yep! Motoring journalisms are obsessed with soft touch, I can't remember a review when it wasn't mentioned at some point. But how often do you touch any part of the dashboard? You'll be touching the wheel, gearstick, and buttons!
@@nickbotfield I will say, as someone with a 1.0 auto RS line clio (21 plate) the wheel is incredible, It is so soft and quite frankly nicer than the wheel in our XC60 T8 R-Design which is about 3x the price brand new!!!
@@nickbotfield Yeah, especially when he says "there's scratchy plastic down there" I do not remember a time where I've gone to touch the bottom of the door panel and felt the scratchiness of the plastic.
I bought a Clio 5 Intens TCe 100 5spd manual in January and I have driven 14000 km since new. I have been very satisfied with the whole car. The engine isn't going to win any races but it has a good torque for everyday driving and the consumption is very reasonable. The 5 spd box has the ratios pretty wide apart so that makes the car feel a bit slow but just drop in to right gear and floor it and it will move nicely.
Bought the Intens trim (1 below RS line) in August with this 1.3 Aut engine here in DK. After driving much more premium cars in the past this new Clio is such a positive surprise, a really wonderful all-arounder. Agree with Matt on slightly worse visibility than in a Polo, the gearbox used to be a little jerky when cold but this has been quite improved after 3k km. It is such a grownup car that actually doesn’t mind to be trashed around in the morning rush hour. I really love it.
@@natsirt0088 it turns off and on in automatic mode depending on the temperature outside... I bought mine in january so still has not gone on but above 16 celsius or so it goes on
@Yule Calma what are you talking about. I never said a Polo was bad. I was just stating it was almost 3 years old, so it is logical new cars from 2020 look more modern amd have more features.
@Yule Calma The Clio is better, drive and see, the race is bad already, if you want to drive very well, you will get a Fiesta, besides it remains simple in terms of driving.
I own the previous version with the 0.9 tce and I have to say that that tiny engine is a lot of fun. The interior quality is not so great, though, but overall I think it's one of the best in its class, as well as the new version.
That's a huge step forward in terms of interior quality. I had the old clio several times as a rental car and it was so cheaply build in the interior and had an unintuitive multimedia system, but the new one looks really good. And I think they made some progress on the reliability
My father got this exact car as shown in the video. He is delighted from the performance. In his opinion the car strikes an amazing balance between sportiness and comfort, for someone who doesn't live in a racing game.
Agreed, looks like we have an S Class of the B segment In the interior department. French designers really have fashion sense, and a very stylish way of interpreting it (fashion) that just works wonders on the end product. I'm glad they have also improved the quality of materials which has always been questionable.
it's a disappointment it won't be coming to australia.i looked at the previous model out of interest when it was time to seek out a replacement for my old micra k12.i ended up buying something used and korean.
The Fiesta in particular looks crap compared to the Clio and 208! Personally I don’t think the new Corsa is a bad looking car at all though.. Peugeot took care of that!
Spanish viewer here. I've just bought this car last month, ended up going with the RS Line 1.3L in black. To me the biggest upside of the car is its interior. About the back seats, it's a Clio so there's not much surprise about the space. When wanting a more spirited driving I highly recommend putting it in sport mode, which makes the steering tighter, fixing the lack of connection that Matt talked about, and the gearbox shifts quicker. One big thing that I haven't seen any review talk about (neither the spanish or english) it's that you can throw it into manual by holding the upshift paddle for about three seconds, doing this while on sport mode give a quite sporty driving experience (despite obviously still being in a Clio) And a big fail to me is not having disk brakes on the rear axle in any specification apart from the 1.5L diesel version, the car brakes great without them but the look is really unflattering. Thanks for the video guys!
I recently rented a base model one and didn’t even notice it had rear drums until I saw them. So pretty good way to cut down the price along with a normal am/fm radio. Some people don’t care about those thing and I think it’s fine.

I've would go for Paris Initiale version. You get leather seats, 360 degree camera, parking assistant, heated seats and steering wheel, shark antenna, special alloy wheels, better materials inside and outside. Great little car.
So... is there any reason at all to choose this over a Peugeot 208? The latter appears to be superior in all respects and looks incomparably better both inside and out...
just drove the Tce 90HP, very comfortable and great engine. No pain in my back after driving ~400 km. I struggled with the media entertainment, but frankly I did not spend much time investigating how it works.
I owned the previous gen and it sucked pretty much. But since i now own this car, i absolutely love it. It's a huge difference, and the exterior might look a bit like the old one (a.k.a VW style), but it's miles a head of the old ones and looks much better.
If you're conidering this, also consider the Seat Ibiza FR. As an owner, I can tell you first hand it's an amazing value for money without compromising on important features.
Thank God man, i wait for this review since a year ago, i also wrote a message to Carwow requesting this review. Since then i bought myself this car...
Re boot release at 7:58, using the button on the key card pops open the hatch about 2cm. You then only need to pull the hatch upwards. Not a problem at all. I found by accident, because it isn't in the manual, something if you deselect the 'walk away from the car' locking mode and use the alternative mode, (lock/unlock buttons on the key card). With the car locked if you approach the boot with the key card the hatch becomes unlocked. You can then open the hatch as he does in the video. Opening the hatch also unlocks the doors. Useful if you quickly want to dump something in the boot and don't have to search for the key card or use the opening buttons.
Most cars don't differ that much in terms of value so you shortlist them and which one to pick is based on what matters most to you. You won't go wrong either way. A buy means that the car is so good at its segment that most people should just not think about it and buy it. A consider should be reserved for cars which are not completely horrible, but for most people will be found lacking, so people should only consider them in case there is something they really need in that car. Seems like a nice system.
I have the 1.5 dCi with 115 cv and 6 speed manual. What I like - Good price for the value - Android Auto on the base version makes you forget about built in sat nav, google maps works much better than any other navigation system as far as I concern - Real exhaust - Good design of the steering wheel and good interior materials even in the base version - Very few aesthetics differences between base and full optional version (car dealers can provide larger alloy wheels even if theoretically they shouln't be available in the cheaper versions) - Exceptional fuel consumption 22-23 kml (should be more or less 62 mpg) with summer tyres, 21 kml with winter tyres.
I have a 407 as of now, but honestly, in 10 year's time, I'm not sure if I'll go for the 508 or the 308. Initially wanted a diesel, but the hybrid is starting to look more appealing.
As a Frenchman the choice between a Clio 5 and a 208 is really hard, but considering the prices and what you get for it, i would rather go with a Clio even though i rather Peugeot in general
The Renault Clio has been a very good car since it’s introduction in 1990. The Clio V is a very good car: solid, comfortable, economic, quick and great looking!
Style above practicality. This is the difference between French cars and German cars. I think the Clio has more personality than the Polo and looks more muscular. Very nice video, as always!
my son just purchased the RS line, after visiting several car dealers. the internal tablet style screen and internal tapestry are fab. by the way the boot size is bigger then a golf its huge for a small car.
I do not know if it's better than the 208 (haven't drove it yet) but it is much better than fiesta/polo/corsa etc.The fact that it looks very similar to the (beautiful but underrated) Megane is an extra plus!
I own the 21 Clio R.S Line 130BHP DSG AUTO, I have to say it’s a gorgeous car, to sit in and to drive! If you like cars and like to have fun, I think this car is definitely one of the small hatchbacks that can give that. The multi media system is fantastic, and fun to use! Full body sensors and rear view camera is brilliant! The flappy paddles are responsive! 2 negatives When pulling off first thing in the morning, you gear box does take a moment to catch up so bit of an over rev, it can be a bit laggy on a pull off sometimes (common apparently) flappy paddles make up for it. French are known for their electrics 🙄 and I have to say after having the car for 6 months having to be in a courtesy for a week while they refitted my battery, so it was wired in properly was definitely laughable and living up to the French’s constant electric problems. No problems since then! Over all I love this car! Don’t regret getting it. I’m a car saleswoman from Johnson’s SEAT as well, so cars are my thing ahahahah

Also has carbon fiber looking material, clicking responsive buttons, a 3D cockpit, customizable interior lights, USB type-c(yes we are in 2020), WIRELESS phone charger) I just don't know man, there so many expensive-looking things in the Peugeot 208, that's why it got the 2020 car of the year. Now, I do agree the design is not for everyone, it is more bold and innovative, maybe a target for a younger generation.
They are actually scrapping all the 1.3 TCe's now for this car and replacing them with the Hybrid e-tech one. I looked at the Dutch website just now. It is pretty sad. Even the R.S. line now only has a 90Hp 3 cyl TcE and the e-tech Hybrid. This drops the car a few spots in the supermini segment for me. That 1.3 TcE was a great engine for this class of car.

10 years ago you could buy a Clio for £9,000 it has now over doubled in price. Can I just ask everyone... has anyone who has stayed in the same job (no promotion) had a £10,000 pay rise? The UK inflation is off the charts.
But compare today's features with those of that 10 year old car. Quite the jump. And yes, you could say "oh just give us a more basic car", but the fact is when you do that those same people will then go on to complain about the lack of features and cheap materials.
@fenn_fren Many features people do not use. The actual engine and transmissions are often used for like 20 years. So you're getting some pointless feature like power adjusted steering wheel that you may use once when it's brand new and then never touch it again. But it's fundamentally the same car or extremely similar for well over double the price. If they still made a ten year old spec'd clio for £9,000 it would sell a lot more than the modern ones
BUYER BEWARE DO NOT BUY THE HYBRID VERSION. I bought one in 2022 expecting for a high mpg after reading Renault's blurb i.e. travelling 80% on electric and driving as long as possible on electric, yes that is total BS. The first few months it appeared to be okay however when the temp drops and you need to use the heating fan the ICE will work nearly continuously you will loose at least 10mpg, at first I thought the car had a fault and returned it to my local dealer, they clearly knew the problem before I turned up because they had a mechanic waiting to speak to me he explained that even the EV battery was fully charged if the electrical load i.e. your fan is on it won't switch to the EV mode until the engine is fully warmed up, so local short trips will just use the ICE, so to get around this I switch the fan off until the windscreen mists up to use the EV mode. I am currently in dispute with Renault after learning other makes of cars don't suffer from this problem.
Always have them big bottles on my car.i work in the middle of no where with no water supply so usually have 4 or five in the car for the work day, and I put them on the passenger seat, and they all shoot into the footwell under breaking, so would be cool to have door bins big enough to put at least one in, for the drive to/from work. Just to have a drink handy.

Kind of like the MK7 Golf with the slide out armrest, parking brake placement, temperature dials, sliding cup holder cover. That's a good thing by Renault.

if the title of the video says 'is it better than a Peugeot 208?' it would be nice if you compared it to that car, even if you only compare one aspect of both. Otherwise a great video as always!!!
About time that this car got reviewed. So there is a sport mode which gives better response with accelerating and more sporty steering. Also from my experience, the automatic dual-clutch transmission isn't clunky at anytime, and pretty quick too. The car is really enjoyable and fun. The interior is designed by a Dutchman. The trim levels are interesting though. Where as in most countries the highest trim level is going to be the RS, here in the Netherlands we've got the 'Initiale Paris'. This trim adds complete beige/cream or black leather seats. Also more trim details on the outside.
Worth noting that the Apple Carplay is only via a USB cable. The Easylink unit does appear capable of Wireless Carplay and WiFi, but it's disabled in UK Clios, and ability to code/add options is blocked. The wireless charging also doesn't like the Magsafe charging in iPhones and complains that there's a metal object on the charging pad (presumably the magnets). Just not as well thought through as some other manufacturers. Guess plugging a cable in isn't the end of the world, but just frustrating knowing the capability is there but they've chosen not to let you have it.
My only gripe with the interior is that they have taken away almost all customisation options, with the MkIV Clio there were several colors to choose from

@petterhny haha oké but still no problems at all. You are a true hater
@petterhny jaloux et mauvaise langue 😋👅👅
@ Mat said otherwise
I went to see renault clio when i was buying a car and i was surprised by the good quality on the inside, i believe it has the best infotaiment screen from all the others

The orange paint in real life is stunning.

@Yule Calma what are you talking about. I never said a Polo was bad. I was just stating it was almost 3 years old, so it is logical new cars from 2020 look more modern amd have more features.
@Yule Calma I drive a Golf 8 so none. But if I had to choose a Polo. Yaris is underwhelming at best.
@Yule Calma The Clio is better, drive and see, the race is bad already, if you want to drive very well, you will get a Fiesta, besides it remains simple in terms of driving.

Agreed, looks like we have an S Class of the B segment In the interior department. French designers really have fashion sense, and a very stylish way of interpreting it (fashion) that just works wonders on the end product. I'm glad they have also improved the quality of materials which has always been questionable.
The French know how to make supermini's with some flair like the 208 which also looks great. This Makes the Polo, Fiesta and Corsa look boring.

One big thing that I haven't seen any review talk about (neither the spanish or english) it's that you can throw it into manual by holding the upshift paddle for about three seconds, doing this while on sport mode give a quite sporty driving experience (despite obviously still being in a Clio)
And a big fail to me is not having disk brakes on the rear axle in any specification apart from the 1.5L diesel version, the car brakes great without them but the look is really unflattering.
Thanks for the video guys!
I recently rented a base model one and didn’t even notice it had rear drums until I saw them. So pretty good way to cut down the price along with a normal am/fm radio. Some people don’t care about those thing and I think it’s fine.
I think the newer models now have rear discs brakes

So... is there any reason at all to choose this over a Peugeot 208? The latter appears to be superior in all respects and looks incomparably better both inside and out...
just drove the Tce 90HP, very comfortable and great engine. No pain in my back after driving ~400 km. I struggled with the media entertainment, but frankly I did not spend much time investigating how it works.

Can't believe this was labeled shortlisted. That only seems to be the case with 95 % of the cars you review, very helpful 👍
What I like
- Good price for the value
- Android Auto on the base version makes you forget about built in sat nav, google maps works much better than any other navigation system as far as I concern
- Real exhaust
- Good design of the steering wheel and good interior materials even in the base version
- Very few aesthetics differences between base and full optional version (car dealers can provide larger alloy wheels even if theoretically they shouln't be available in the cheaper versions)
- Exceptional fuel consumption 22-23 kml (should be more or less 62 mpg) with summer tyres, 21 kml with winter tyres.
Hey mate, just ordered the 1,5 dci 100hp. Was wondering 62 mpg Us or UK?

If you like cars and like to have fun, I think this car is definitely one of the small hatchbacks that can give that. The multi media system is fantastic, and fun to use! Full body sensors and rear view camera is brilliant! The flappy paddles are responsive!
2 negatives
When pulling off first thing in the morning, you gear box does take a moment to catch up so bit of an over rev, it can be a bit laggy on a pull off sometimes (common apparently) flappy paddles make up for it.
French are known for their electrics 🙄 and I have to say after having the car for 6 months having to be in a courtesy for a week while they refitted my battery, so it was wired in properly was definitely laughable and living up to the French’s constant electric problems. No problems since then!

I walked past a brand new Clio today and it was orange looks really nice
