New Renault Clio Review: The hybrid supermini that's not a Yaris

- The Renault Clio is a mainstay of the supermini class, the first model having been launched more than 30 years ago. For 2023 Renault has updated its fifth generation Clio with fresh styling, an upgraded interior and new trim levels to tie in with the rest of the Renault range. Not only that, but Renault has slimmed down the Clio's powertrain options so that it is now available with only petrol or hybrid power.
In this CarGurus UK review, Chris Knapman gets behind the wheel of the Clio E-Tech Full Hybrid in top-of-the-range Esprit Alpine trim and finds it to be a very likeable supermini with a couple of strange quirks.

The whine mentioned isn’t from the electric motor. It’s an issue on some models from the air vents but can be quickly resolved with a trip to the dealer.
Being in the South of France they are so many Fiestas almost seeing more than Clios including my white one, which is so good to drive!!
I was given a new Clio (well, 600km's on the clock!) hire care in Gran Canaria last month, and I was shocked by how solid it was. It's been a long time since I was in a Clio (probably as a student 25 years ago!), but it absolutely felt like a much bigger and prestigious car, and certainly washed the floor with the gaggle of Kia's and Hyundai's I've been constantly given over the last few years when renting abroad. Only real niggle was the length of time it took for the Android Auto to connect (and the daft 'data disclaimer' that came up on screen every time you turned on the ignition), but the fact it had wireless Android Auto in the first place was pretty damn good in my book! I put on about 1000km's in that car over the two weeks I had it - I got quite attached to the little thing!! Haha!!
A Hyundai i20 or a Kia Rio drives better than a Renault Clio. The infotainment system on those also isn't as sluggish. They also come with wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Lastly, who cares about a prestigious car when driving a segment B? Those are always going to rattle and squeak at some point. If you want a bit more "prestigious" ride but still a city car, you go for a segment C car. Otherwise, if you want a "prestigious" car, you go for a Mercedes C class onward, Audi A4 onward, BMW Series 3 onward.
@@dragonfang8670Oh No!!!! I've driven a Kia Rio and a Hyundai i20 and I really can't agree with your opinion! These 2 cars are plastic fantastic and they drive less well than the Clio! Recently my Clio had to go to the repair shop and I was given a Kia Rio as a replacement car and I found it a terribly unpleasant experience, everything rattles in the chassis, there is no feeling and everything is rock hard plastic. I was happy that I could pick up my Clio again. You probably like hard plastic, but I like pure nature, and that is exactly the material they use in the new Clio, pure nature and soft touch!
@@esperootje Plastic is to be expected in lower end cars, even an Audi A1 has some plastics… but they are well built. Like I said, segment B is not the way to go if you want a luxurious car.
@@dragonfang8670 I am very surprised that the Clio is very luxury and it gives me that feeling. Before this I always had Opel Astra, Audi A3 and Citroën C4 but the Clio is good enough for me, especially my new Clio Esprit Alpine full hybrid, great car! Highly recommended. It's my 3th Clio and never had any issues, very reliable. That's my opinion.
I have the prefacelift Clio V with that 90 tce manual version in techno trim. A pleasant car to drive around town and on highway. Beautiful black and white interior with ambient lighting. Very quiet too and has enough power in lower revs. The keyless is a nice feature to have! I fill this car around 35 liters average and i can do between 700km - 800km on a tank! Absolutely love this car!

I would prefer if reviews were done on the mid range model or the pick you would recommend to choose not alway the top of the range.
I suspect all manufacturers only have top of the range cars for their press fleet. It's the same with all reviews.

Nice cars as far as I can remember from when I ordered mine back in November, still waiting, haha. Might get it by 2025, who knows! Drove it back to back with most of the competition and felt it drove better and was better built than most of them.

What a great looking car. I think it’s a good option in the small car segment.
You left it until the end to mention the Jazz; I'm not an expert, but I'd have thought the Jazz was a real contender in this space even if it _is_ more expensive, as Honda look to have a rather clever hybrid solution. Also, the Corsa is mentioned a few times, but not its main French rival (and biggest selling car in Europe in 2022), the 208?
Never been much of a fan of french cars, but I've always had a soft spot for the Clio. My mom has a 14 year old one and it's been rock solid all these years. This newest one is really good looking, something you can't say about the 2009 model my mom has
I’ve owned 8 Renaults and apart from one, they were all trouble free. Can’t say that about some Japanese cars I’ve owned🙄. My current Megane hatch’s build quality is superb and she’s a real looker inside and out. It’s a shame Renault has discontinued the ICE Megane for another SUV clone in the Megane-E. This Clio looks great but may soon give way to the forthcoming Renault 5 electric.
This will probably be my next car in 2 years or so.
How do the different driving modes affect the engine? Or is it all superficial (dashboard style)
Yes I would consider a Clio. My sister has an Orange 21 plate Clio and is thinking of getting a bigger car this year. I might buy it off her.
The Sandero is a great car too do and I would drive one too.
I have 2018 Clio and for the price it has been great car… i would consider it as a two Person car. It is so small after all… but so are other small cars. Interesting ti see how these new version has changed it… not bad based on this video.
This is mostly the Zoe interior - the digital dials, aircon controls, and entertainment system is all straight out of the Zoe.
How would you rank these : swift,i20,clio,yaris ?
If I were to move to Europe, I think the Renault would be my choice of supermini. I wouldn't want to copy the vehicle of my mother- or sister-in-law (Hyundai i20 and Peugeot 208), and with the Fiesta being gone, and the Corsa not being up to snuff with me, this with a non-hybrid trim (I would prefer the room) would do me just fine.

As to your closing question in the review, Clio or Sandero? That is personal choice really and it would only be a choice between the petrol Clio or Sandero, as there is no hybrid Sandero, yet. The Sandero in Essential trim is around £4,000 cheaper and has the same TCe 90 engine as the Clio. The Sandero also has better residuals over three years from new. The choice may well come down to badge snobbery and image perception. In the current cost of living crisis, the Sandero may be the better economic choice.
I just switched from Sandero to hybrid Clio. My issue with the Sandero was first gear takes me nowhere and if I launch on second it just can't cope. It's great when it gets up to speed on the motorway but it's getting there that is a bit of a problem, especially when joining a motorway at an incline. The Clio just sends it. Had it for a week so far and it's worth the additional 7k imo. I'm on PCP anyway.
Oh wow so in the UK you dont get 2 other powertrain options. Cause it also exists a TCe 100 LPG (the same 1L 3cyl but with a factory LPG installation) and the 1.5 dCi diesel.
It looks like a puma at the back with them lights.
This should be more sporty 2 exhaust ends and nice spoiler and 230hp
i hate noises buth the electric sound is not anyoing at all.....love the car interieur lot better then fiesta or mazda also the electric motor make the car feel like a turbo car. its 8.5 sec to 100 in sport mode fun to drive. and i came from a swift sport 1.4 turbo with stage 1+ 180 hp. even when racing it the fuell use is super low 5.1 L per 100 km and i dont try and drive it hard thats in the winter summmer is lot better
Would go for a yaris and you can have 10yr/100,000 warranty if you service at toyota
TRY a Honda CRV with ear defenders. For the buck its fine drive wise ! Find me another one with Alpine spec for price WAITING
Renault do like silly trim names.. absolutely no link between this vehicle and F1 or Alpine sports cars...
The gearbox is quite similar to an F1 car actually.
the interior is better put together than in Ford Puma feels more solid. But the visibility is not that great.

Hybrids, they are just ICE s that generate a little less carbon than pure petrol models under certain conditions. They have no long term future so it is bizarre that the incentives for business use are so good that people are switching to them from EVs. The regulators need to adjust the balance urgently to increase EV uptake.
With a low battery, hybrids use more fuel than Diesel equivalents over long distances. Diesel is low carbon compared to petrol but not so good for urban use. I would consider a Diesel over a hybrid if I rarely drove into town (actually that is me now but car replacement time may still be a few years away). Most hybrids have pathetic small fuel tanks, and less luggage space then ICEs. I hope to avoid ever having a hybrid (except the mildest kind that use the starter to recycle a little energy from a very small battery) all those compromises and extra complexity go against the grain. The industry loves them as tax incentives help them sell a more technology- dense product at a high price, up-selling with the help of ordinary tax payers- what a shambles!
Beware of any Renault cars. I bought a Clio E Tech 1,5 months ago in Poland and already twice have been broken. Torn cables were found and there were short circiuits. I was very lucky there was no fire and I’m still alive. The lowest quality production level that I’ve ever seen.
Renault need to offer an ICE in the upcoming Renault 5 instead of face lifting the bland Clio.
they won't because the 5 is designed from the ground up to be an EV, replacing the Zoe and will be manufactured by Ampere
17 inch wheels. What country you driving in?! No seriously, look great, but I have downgraded my own car from the standard 16 or 17 inch, to 15 inch simply because there’s only a loss of width of about a centimetre in the tyres, but the bumps are diminished significantly. Let’s face it, it’s a damn cheek of councillors to get speed bumps installed when the water company’s drains are entirely sunken and the potholes are Himalayan. It feels like the choice of a 1.6 in the hybrid is huge, but Toyota have a 1.5 in their Yaris and nobody raises an eyebrow at that…and of course they increased their Prius to a full 2 litres yet obtained much better economy. If you want a hybrid, and know nothing about cars, get a Toyota Yaris or Prius because of the robust auto transmission which has no friction plates that wear or torque convertors that waste energy, and so on. I don’t know the system on this Clio hybrid terribly well, but Toyota’s hybrids are the standard to measure by. I think when you understand WHY it thrums more insistently - to charge the battery - it’s easier to tolerate. I’m going to take a picture of a section of road near us - there’s about 40 small overlapping patches of tarmac, it’s stupid, literally a patchwork quilt. And those water companies need to be brought to book, for the undermining of our road network -time they moved all those drains to be on pavements.

Not really a true 145BHP.The battery can only power the drive motor at full power for a couple of minutes. On a long steep hill you end up with 90 BHP.
I'd buy the cheapest car.

Had a MK4 and didn’t want to admit the MK5 was much better. I caved and got a MK5 but this facelift is not something I crave. Those lights are awful and they no longer flow with the bonnet. Infotainment the same. Interior the same (except blue bits instead of red bits)
Pointless facelift.
I have one of the earliest MK4 and it’s actually not bad considering it’s going on close to 12 years

That infotainment looks slow. I don't want to imagine how it feels after it's been in the sun for a day. For a car in 2024...
Disappointing. This is only a face lift. Not a new Car. Same Old Engine. I would choose a Yaris or a Jazz instead, although I really like Renault cars.
Will we ever come away from this weird middle aged man leather fetish? Leather and look alikes are very outdated looking. I dont want a car who's interior looks like that of the early 2000s or that of a middle aged businessman. I want an interior that isn't going to stick to my legs in summer or being freezing cold in the winter. Car manufacturers should be bringing fabric to the top models. I would argue that the leather and false leather should be reserved exclusively for an optional add on. You couldn't get any more eco friendly than cotton fabric.

Apart from the 12v battery problem if you don't do many miles each year.
but the yaris is way more ugly and has a very cheap build quality, also in the netherlands you only see those ugly yaris on every corner of the street, they only want a japanese car
@@kevintjeuh8888 can't agree with you more. The Yaris is ugly and the interior design is made for old people. I also live in the Netherlands and i ordered the Clio Esprit Alpine in Rafale grey and i can pick it up next week, its sportive and beautiful inside and outside. It will replace my 2019 Clio 5 Initiale Paris tce100 which proved to be very reliable, i never had any issues with the car at all. So i made a perfect choice with the Clio.
