sounds awesome. Love Porsche for embracing the boost. This over any of it's competition. A tune and IPE exhaust would really top it off.
Thanks for sharing the video , I was thinking to move to 718 Boxster S but after watching this video I will stick to my present 981 Boxster S with Remus exhaust.. it will burp and blast a lot much louder in tunnel , putting a sweet smile on your face each time you accelerate hard

Crackles and pops happen when you put it in Sport Mode or Individual Mode
I'm so tired of people bitching about the 718's sound. No, it's not going to sound as deep as the outgoing 3.4, but I still think it sounds awesome, especially up above 4000 RPM. And more importantly, it's an amazing performer in every respect. It strikes me as utterly ridiculous to obsess over the sound when the car does everything else exceedingly well.
Some find the "sound" of a sportscar part of the driving experience, turbos also have some lag, they missed the mark with this one...

I get that engine sound is important to a lot of people, myself included, but it's nowhere near as important as performance. And for me it's not as important as fuel efficiency either. This car offers the best of both worlds; better performance than ever, and better efficiency than ever. I don't understand why anyone would bitch about that.
Modern turbos use twin scrolls and variable vane technologies to eliminated lag, which is why this car is faster than the one it replaces. Porsche uses the best turbos in the industry, so lag is definitely not an issue in this car, or most modern high-end sports cars.
D LG The sound of a sports car is one one of the most important parts of car ownership. Hearing a great engine excites petrolheads. Like when you go to the racetrack and can hear the cars before you see them. Having a car like this with a soft-top it's so important to have a great sounding car. I was a potential customer. I own a 911 and a 987 Boxster. My current Boxster sounds better. I told the dealership I wouldn't be buying one mainly because of that engine. Not just sound but performance. (Too much turbo lag.)
I highly recommend that you atleast give the 718 a chance, give it a test drive. You will see that the turbo lag is definitely not a reason to not buy it, its practically not even there. Porsche HAS to adapt to the modern technology which is turbocharge. Of course the 3.4 sounded better but I assure you that this engine still sounds good, much better in real life than in any video you will see. The performance of this car in many aspects like handling, driving stability and power easily blows away the 981.
+esysman I get that it's paramount to some, but definitely not all. As I said, I do enjoy engine sound, but it's just not a top priority for me. In any case, I actually like the sound the 718 S makes, with the sport exhaust. It's nowhere near as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Either way, it is what it is, so if you don't like it, buy a used 981. Personally, I'll be looking for a used 718 Cayman S or GTS down the road. Hopefully they'll be cheap because all the purists will be overpaying for 981s.
The S with PDK/Sport Chrono sounds better in person and behind the wheel. The base model with PDK had a more ragged sound. Both are great performers, the S is both faster and smoother. Don't really care for the pops, but even the flat 6's with the sport exhaust had them in recent years.

I think it sounds GREAT! It's the sound of my 981 Boxster GTS holding its value nicely as the last great NA Porsche mere mortals can buy. I can tell you now, my car would sound like thunder erupting in that tunnel, it is soooo much louder, that thing really is pathetic, if you can't even get it to sound half decent in a tunnel, you've got no chance!

Just come in from driving my Boxster Spyder, and it's hard to believe they're related. He's doing 7000 rpm to get that flat wet noise. The Spyder is spine-tingling at 7000rpm, and every other rev.
This is the reason I bought my Boxster Spyder too, porsche going 4 banger turbo, what were they thinking?

it doesnt sound as nice ofc but i dont think its that bad for the performance increase i think it is worth it, C/D tested this models 0-60 time at 3.6 secs which is incredible and all thanks to low down torque

I don't know when crackles and pops became a thing, but man I hate it. Needs a large displacement n/a V8. That'll give it some character.

All I'm saying is that I'm far more concerned with the car's actual performance than with how impressed people are with the sound as I drive by. In any case, the car actually sounds nice to me. I'm actually planning to buy one, in Cayman form.
tbh the tunnel sounds like what it sounds like irl. its cos Microphones have harder time recording the sound waves once u got out of tunnel due to open space. the sound will travel all over. But in real life it sounds much better for those wondering.

Exhaust noise was never cool for Boxters and Caymans anyways. Its just the engine noise in the cabin what makes Porsches cool. hope they still have that at least.

the BRZ/WRX sound is amazing, 1750TBI is amazing too..
but not as amazing as a 6cylinder NA would be
The old WRX had unequal length header so you get the famous "burble" and and with the right exhaust it could scream (look up ScoobySport) The new WRX and BRZ have equal length headers which eliminates the rumble.
At least there will be a host of aftermarket exhaust makes to try and fix this. I think it sounds very underwhelming.

*Here is constructive argument (opinion)on why this does not sound like Subaru (or any other japan cars, you should be smacked for even comparing them, different beasts), not here to argue how "good" it sounds tho* but gotta say the car sounds like the best stock 4 cyl ive ever heard aside from alfa.
----Lets talk about 3 elements of sound. *Rhythm* (in this case we will use the engine's sound pattern), *tempo* (in this case we will use how fast it revs to high revs), and *pitch or note* i guess
1: pattern- is still porsche. The rhythm of the engine is the same (very noticeable in high revs, in low revs harder to hear but ill explain later)
2: tempo - basically revs to higher end about same speed as previous gen.
3: Pitch/note- It is *lower* and that is one of the most notable thing our ear picks up. IT SOUNDS LOWER PITCHED. is that *bad?* personally i say its just different. If you dislike this specific note, then you must hate a lot of cars with low pitches like AMG, and muscle cars :(
All of these elements *do not sound like subaru* BUTTT
*NOW HERE ARE THINGS THAT U HEAR THAT MIGHT BE WHY YOU THINK THIS SOUNDS LIKE SUBARU*
1. the initial patterns are not quite the same: There are some air blowing like noise in the very first few revs. If that matters *THAT* much to you then dont get this car and continue to bash on it as it rightfully deserves your bashing in this case.
2. the totality of the Volume is reduced. It is also a natural occurrence because we naturally thing higher pitch things are louder, when it really isnt. It just kinda shocks your ears more. kinda like how spicy tastes nice but its a sensation of pain.
personally i think this car is quite nice. *i wont say this is better sounding than flat 6, but it is simply different* WOULD be nice if its louder tho but keep in mind these are videos. Mics also do not pick up lower pitched things too well (depending on brand). I checked it out irl the other day, sounds damn damn loud.
and for the youngsters, u gotta know that porsche used to be a 4 cyl company :) so u cant really say they changed? its more like..changed back again...
It sounds very similar to a Subaru STi, or 356, or Beetle actually. They all have exhaust header designs that make them sound more like 2 cylinders than 4, hence the burbling off-beat sound.
