Just bought the 718 Cayman and was an owner of a previous 981 Generation-and other then the sound, the new 718 is dynamically better, in virtually every way. Excellent review by the way.
Too right, get the previous version. Turbo engines are killing off performance cars. No way is a turbo charged engine involving. Basically it's just s**t!
I think it sounds great, but then again I may be a bit biased lol. I agree it doesn't sound like a traditional Porsche but neither does the Cayenne or Macan.
+subaruwrxfan Hi Matt, The problem is that porsches are pretty much defined by their flat six engine. The cayenne or macan aren't exactly sports cars. People don't tend to care. Besides, a v8 cayenne sounds pretty sweet.
but they're not traditional Porsches. they're just holes in the market for the sake of selling. real Porsche's are the CAYMAN, boxster and the 911. I think the panamera is a proper Porsche as well because it is kind of a modern day 928. but Cayenne and Macan aren't "real" Porsche's
One of the most honest and bottom line reviews I have ever seen. As a long time Porsche owner and a current Spyder owner I think this guy's opinion is quite valuable to anyone considering a new Boxter.
+Tim Archer Very much agreed. Intelligent talk, simple and no fuss review with ample and deserved credit to the 718. But yeah, ultimately a car like this is about emotion and involvement. If that suffers, the purists will be disappointed.
Honestly, I prefer the sound of the 718. Ever since Porsche started putting roughly equal-length exhaust headers on their sixes, the sound has been a bit... clinical. Now the engine note has some personality again. whether or not it "sounds like a Porsche" may well depend on whether you're old enough to remember when some Porsches had flat-4 motors, or even when the flat 6's still had that nice boxer rumble. IMO this is a return to form. Count me as a fan of the 718.
You haven't even seen a 718, let alone heard one! What are you talking about?! And if you are like 99.9% of the people, you didn't have the chance to listen to a flat 6 for 5 minutes either, that is you probably never had the chance to drive one. Jesus... you posted that 3 months ago, where there weren't any 718s around, and still there are like 6 people to like this nonsense... that is UA-cam for you.
Baerchenization Perhaps you weren't aware that this and most other car review videos have, like, an audio track n' stuff to go along with the video? Look son, the number of cars I've owned over the decades probably comes close to the number of years you've been alive. I've owned one or more Chevy, Ford, Buick, Porsche, Volkswagen, Nissan, Mazda, Dodge, Saab, Audi, Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and probably a couple others I don't feel like scouring from my memory banks right now, equipped with a whole variety of power plants -- I4s, I5s, flat-4s, flat-6s, conventional V6s, narrow-angle V6s, V8s, and even a rotary. I've heard enough exhaust notes over the years to know what I like and what I don't, even if I'm only hearing it in car review videos for the first time. And yes, I'm aware that the in-cabin exhaust note is often electronically enhanced/synthesized these days which is why I listen and judge the exhaust note from exterior shots only.
Says someone who doesn't even have a Porsche to actually know what he's talking about. You can't tell it until you drive it. The flat 4 is fucking bullshit, feels the same as driving the new audi S3 or the golf R, but paying 40k more.
Aitor Jara I've owned Porsches before and I don't have to own one now to know I prefer the sound of one over the sound of another. If you think driving one of the most well-balanced sports cars ever built feels the same as driving a nose-heavy, understeering hog like the S3 or Golf R, you have no business telling anyone they don't know what they're talking about.
the tail lights i think looks too ordinary now, i always thought the boxster/cayman tail lights were really unique but this one, looks too plain and small, i think it took a step backwards
Well done guys. First really decent bit of UA-cam content for a while, the kind of content that's been a staple of the Autocar channel for years until more recently. Please keep it up!
Having driven the old 987 Boxster S, part of the fun was hearing Porsche's signature flat 6 wail every time i put my foot down...why on earth would someone pay this much money to LOSE that magnificent aural experience.
Turbos are all about torque and power. You can only get more power by getting more fuel into an engine. There are two ways to do it; more revs or forced induction. The six was hard work and noisy, the 718 is fast everywhere and a vast improvement, it flies from any speed anywhere. Everything is easier, faster and more relaxing. The GT4 rear suspension is also a lot better and enables faster cornering. The 718 completely outclassed the 981. I’ve just got mine and I’m sold.
+IIproductionsII That is exactly what Mercedes Benz has done with their brand name. In the Southern US, every person wanting to look "high-end" is driving a bargain Merc and they look like crap. Mostly because these people cant afford the up keep on them.
I owned one of the last air-cooled 911s, so I do appreciate the Porsche flat-6. Having said that, I wonder if the sound of the 718 will be a disappointment to anyone who hasn't owned a 911 or "classic" Boxster. In other words, is the engine disappointing outright, or only in comparison to the traditional flat-6 benchmark?
It's like F1. The drama is gone. They might get faster lap times with these new Power Unites (PU) but that rumbling that gave you goosebumps is gone. The same with this new Porsche. I've got to say Ferrari did a great job with 488 GTB. Specially as the torque increases with every gear and you don't get full torque like in most sports cars. A lot of torque is good in a race car, not in a sports cars.
I don't understand it when reviewers are switched between similar cars. As for example was done here. It makes it impossible to compare - one of the primary points of reviews. Steve Sutcliffe reviewed Cayman S, GTS, Boxster Spyder and other Porsches. Why didn't he review this car? I'd love his opinion on the new engine.
For my, car sound is everything. I really like the 6 cilinder from Porsche. I don''t care about how fast it is, it sounds like nothing and has no emotion. Porsche i'm really really disappointed in you
+FullHDsupercars _ I've been saving for my Cayman S for over two years now, and I'm devastated. Time to just pull the trigger and get an on the lot 2016 instead? So much for building it to my specs and choices.....ugh.
Have a new 718 Boxster and it’s my first Porsche so apparently I don’t know any better. This is the most fun I’ve ever had in a car with the possible exception of the back seat of an old Ford at the drive in movie.
The thing about some of these supposed more efficient new turbo 4's - on top of not getting the claimed mpg figures, the mpg read outs are actually fibbing by literally miles ie Golf R
Good review. Tricky times when a writer knows that by ripping into a manufacturer they won't ask him to review their cars. Thus carefully constructed sentences...
I doubt the boxer 4 will affect standard Boxster or Boxster S sales at all. Here's hoping that they maintain 6 cylinders and natural aspiration for any special models though.
Riding a wave of midrange torque (because there isn't anything extra to be found at the top-end, no point revving it out), shouldn't be what a sportscar is about.
+chaoticdog85 Merriam Webster would like to disagree with you " a low small usually 2-passenger automobile designed for quick response, easy maneuverability, and high-speed driving" That seems to fit the 718 build quite nicely.
Shame Porsche didn't checkout the original 718 to see how to make a flat four exciting and soulful. Nothing wrong with a flat four when done right. The 550 Spyder and 718 sounded awesome. They screamed and howled like a Porsche should.
After hearing this lovely gentleman, and concluding that nowadays engineers are UNABLE to make NA engines more powerful & cleaner without damn turbos I am not surprised we have over 200k orders for new Tesla Model 3.
Mac Arows haha seriously? His only complaint was it lost 2 cylinders and everyone is complaining about the sound being horrible and you think the Tesla Model 3 with no cylinders and no sound is what Porsche buyers want? Tesla’s are cool but i’d buy a turbo 4 banger Porsche with the best handling chassis ever produced and more power and torque than the previous Caymans NA 6 over the Tesla any day. The auto industry is seeing a progression from large displacement naturally aspirated to small displacement turbo charged and ultimately and unfortunately electric. Someday electric will rule the world and any of us who are still alive will lament the sound of a combustion engine at start up and roaring down the road.
I think you're still to kind too kind to that awful sounding 4 cilinder in it. It's a damn shame the flat 6 is gone. And not just because of the sound, or the throttle response, but because of the emotion a NA engine brings in it's power delivery. And I'm not saying that as a Porsche purist, but as a sports car purist.
+marcuskuip Agreed. The power delivery of a wrx or other 4 cyl turbo isn't bad, it's just a bit bland. Same deal here - the engine is effective but not too interesting.
Was thinking of buying one of these with potentially replacing engine with 4.0 naturally aspirated in the future, would pdk need to be modified for that engine?
Doesn't sound too bad for a four, definitely fruitier than my mark3 TTS but obviously more expensive as well. It looks beautiful, but sports cars need to crackle and pop.
It would be nice with a floppy paddle twin clutch, twin turbo, supercharger and all wheel drive. That would be fun stuff. I like the quiet of the cabin. It seems as though it is livable as it is but may be missing some of the soul that Porsche is known for even in the Camen.
Most people can't tell the sound difference between a 4 and 6 unless you tell them then suddenly everyone says they can hear the difference and the 4 sounds so bad lol people are such liars.
That is just pure nonsense. Porsche V6 engines have a unique sound. Even a V6 with a turbo will sound different. We are clearly talking about engine noise not exhaust.
You are such a stupid guy... I have the flat 6 and I can tell this one here is fucking disgusting, it sounds like a really small engine just like the one in the audi S3 or golf R. There is nothing as the flat 6 you can't feel the same while driving. Personally I would never spend money on a porsche with a turbo unless the engine is 3.4L at mínimum. Besides that they are charging more money for this new versión than ever, which makes me even more sick.
slightly ... a little bit ... ever so minute ... might ... not sure ... slightly less ... not as much ... Just say it! It's a four pot, and it's not slightly less involving, not a little bit worse, not just a bit less. It's a real loss, and a real shame.
john m I’ve just bought one and it’s fantastic, the new four is a huge improvement, considerably faster everywhere and noticeably better handling. The old six was noisy, hard work and slow in comparison. Mine has the PDK too, which is much better than manual.
Ashley James You need to book an appointment with your Doctor to get your ears checked out. You might have persuaded yourself, but you are not kidding anyone else. The new car's engine sounds worse that a Subaru. Faster. True, slight improvement in steering feel, but otherwise everywhere else seems worse. Turbo lag, (poor throttle response) weird droning sounds, rear lights look like Halfords aftermarket, cheap looking plasticky steering wheel, bland front bumper, no soul, no charisma, a major step backwards compared to wonderful looking and sounding 981. And yes, in case you hadn't guessed, I have driven both a lot. Driven 4x 718's (different models) Had a week with 718 Cayman and was glad to hand it back. A shame. On paper it sounds great but the reality is shocking.
Peter Oxley The 718 has GT4 rear suspension arms, a wider track and much better handling. The previous models never felt quite right IMO, whereas the 718 is beautifully balanced. There isn’t any obvious turbo lag just more power everywhere. The old six was a bit gutless unless you kept it above 4,500 when it was noisy and tiring on a journey. The new car is much quieter. Im sure you’re very upset because Porsche have rendered whatever you own out of date, but they had no alternative if they were going to make a faster car than hot hatches.
Peter Oxley I think you made a mistake because I did the same as you, I had a 987, i agonised over a 981 and tried a 718 extensively. There are so many areas where the 981 falls short. But if you prefer the induction roar of a six and that’s what matters to you, I’m happy for you. TBH I think Porsche have customers like me who want a long distance touring car that’s fun to drive fast with the roof down etc and they have track day types who spend a fortune on exhausts and wheels and like brake callipers painted horrible colours that clash with the car. On the road in real world conditions, the 718 is a much faster, quieter, better handling, better riding car with a much better navigation system that operates with my iPhone. Even the headlights are a massive improvement. I thought it was a no brainer. 😉
Ashley James No mistake, I can assure you. Porsche have lost their USP and made their car more like it's competitors from Audi, and in engine terms, inferior to Nissan, and BMW. They have made the mistake. As Chris Harris said: The 718 is still a great sports car...just not quite as great as the one before. In isolation it is ok. But not a keeper.😉
Please tell us whether or not it actually is more fuel efficient than the previous model. From my personal experience, these new smaller displacement engines, don't provide better consumption figures, except on a test dyno.
+MagicAyrtonforever They've had plenty of amazing 4-cylinder cars in their history. 356, 718 (the original), 912, 914, 924, 944, 968... not to mention their current Le Mans car. This one should be just as great.
I definitely agree. But everything about this car says it feels amazing. I can't see an advantage for the F-Type outside of the sound, which is obviously very subjective. I like both, for different reasons. But I'd still take the superior acceleration and handling of the 718.
I think it will still do pretty well. If you want handling then you can get a Elise 220 or a Exige 350 roadster, the F type is good but the 718 is a good compromise for a sports car
least involving review I've ever seen, i had to force myself to see it till the end. Man it's a porsche, you're driving a car that the majority of us is dreaming of, please put some emotion in it. It's a car not a woman it will not leave you if you show her some love XD
I think this review is fantastic. Is the car a faster, marginally better driving car? Yes. Does it have the soul or involvement of the flat 6? No. You can see it on his face during the whole review, the car is just not as thrilling w/o the flat 6. I've got a 2.7 981 Boxster 6 speed which I will certainly not be trading in for a 718 anytime soon. Great review Autocar!!
Oh no, what have they done? I think it looks absolutely stunning but that sound (or lack of it!) is just awful. All this talk of lowering emissions, speed limits etc is just killing the very heart of a sports car. Are we just not allowed to have fun any more. Can we not stick to the 6 cylinder option if we agree to plant 6 trees with every purchase
no doubt, the GTS sounds better, but when I drove a new (leftover) GTS back to back with the 718S, I found the 718S to feel much more powerful and better in every way...also the GTS looked great, but immediately old as "last year's model" ... same price, I went for the 718S.... don't regret it.
Because of the sound, the free inertial force and the free mass moment, therefore you need a balance shaft. The flat six doesn't need that. This is why they are so torquey but still like to rev. If you have the chance, drive a manual 911 Carrera S with the 3.8 flat six. You'll know what I mean. Sorry for my bad engllish.
Great video and epic countryside (I grew up in norther California and live in NYC-am always pining for bigger skies). Engine sound does seem like it's gone from nightingale to pigeon. I'd still surrender my left nut to own one.
Great car. True it doesn’t sound quite as good as the old ones but the improved performance more than makes up for it imo. Enjoy as we’ll all be driving electric cars before we know it!
Porsche I am actually disappointed. The 981 Boxster looked way better, it looked very sharp. This honestly doesn't look as expensive as it is. Why would you do that? This car competes with the Jaguar F Type. Unfortunately for you, the F Type looks better now (the 981 held its own against the F Type in terms of looks), and it sounds waaaay better (the old 981 had the distinctive Porsche howl from it's free-revving 6-pot). Now all you have is "driving feel". If I wanted driving feel purely, I would get a Lotus Evora. But this car is supposed to be perfect, now it isn't. Neither is the 991.2. I drive a 991.1 and I don't think I'll be upgrading unfortunately.
+VirusTornado I own a 981 Boxster S and I totaly agree with you. It is very sad that my favorite brand is doing this to my favorite cars. I'm realy hopping that they bring a 6 cyl. GTS or Spyder model, because they killed it...
+MikeVonDoom Owning both a 6 cylinder car and a 4 cyl turbo car, they do both have their own appeal no doubt about it... but I think I prefer the 6 cylinder sound more. It's always going to be an individual choice / preference though I guess.
A warning ...the EU is thinking of testing all cars at 75% power for noise which must not exceed 61 db.If you are thinking of buying a car with a loud exhaust you may have to get it modified at vast expense.
As a potential 718 owner I have to say the sound of this car at least in this video is awful. I always hate the sound of the Subaru and this sounds like it. I'll wait until the launch and test drive it myself before I make judgement but unless it really influences me otherwise I'll either keep my 987 or buy a gen.1 981.
Porsche already has a modern, efficient flat 6 motor... in the new 911s. Using a 4-pot for "emissions" is a bullish*t excuse. From where i stand, its Porsche's way of demoting the cayman/boxster to much below the 911 as the 981 cayman/boxster actually got better reviews that their bigger brother. Porsche felt they were losing sales of 911s to cayman/boxsters. Hence the 4-pot.
+Michael Panayi I don't really know what is so demeaning about a 4 cylinder engine other than the sound, personally I find the concept of a middle placed turbo 2.5 flat four very attractive. You could make the argument of the torque at the top end, but I don't go 8/10 or 10/10 every time I drive. This is a road car so the torque is better suited for its purpose, it weights less and it's certainly less thirsty. I don't know about you but to me this seems like a much more competent road car than the last generation. I'm willing to sacrifice the sound for all this.
+Alex Serranoit It 718 4 cylinder weights more than the 981 flat 6, because of the turbos and uses just as much fuel if not more when you punch it there is no advantage. Other than a cheaper product for more money.
+Alex Serrano unfortunately, the 718 actually weighs more than the previous generation, and under real driving conditions, the turbo motor is not more efficient that the old motor. Also, regarding the concept of a 4 cylinder, you have to remember this is a 60k car. For 60k, you expect the motor to be special, not just capable. No one is denying that the 718 performance is better, but its not a special motor, just capable A VW golf (much cheaper) has a 4-pot motor, and is also capable, but no one would call the engine special. Also, haven driven the 981 cayman, cayman s and gts, none of them are lacking in torque especially when combined with the PDK gearbox. regardless, the 718 is still a great car, i just can't standing the marketing crap in justifying a repositioning of the boxster/cayman to be clearly a poor man's 911.
+scanspeak00 BRZ is naturally aspirated and front engined. This is basically a mid engined BRZ with a turbo and way more power/torque. Worth it, I'd say
Take it to your favourite mountain road, drop the top, feel the balance and torque and enjoy the forest autumnal breeze. Then get back home through the highway comfortably listening to your favourite music and sleep happily. Mid engined, usable power, not crazy expensive, reasonable mileage and gorgeous design. This car is all about experience and not performance. Perfect road car in my opinion :)
oh dear, what have Porsche done..... drove a Turbo S Cab recently.... I did not like it .. it's very capable... but it's so quiet and too refined.. I felt so detached.... I much preferred the 991.1 S and GT3 NA motors.... how I wish Porsche stick with NA at least with ALL GT cars for the foreseeable future
Seems like a good car. Can't believe they settled on that 4 cylinder flat engine though.. Probably due to handling characteristics and so forth. Didn't want to sacrifice handling for a better engine noise(?). I think inline 4s with turbo sounds better and they have used that before in the 944 ex. 944 turbo with a slight tune actually sounded quite awesome back in the day. At least to me, the engine sound I can hear in the video does not remind me of any Porsche i can remember and that is a bit of a shame.
+Butcheren0 I read that it is about 50kg heavier like-for-like (transmission and model) compared to the outgoing model. Similar story for the new turbo Carrera, because of intercoolers and such. So I don't see how it would handle better, it is the worse of both worlds.
+Jeff K the brakes where already good, its cheaper just to buy a larger set, and it has great handling already, great feel and weight. suspension depends on if they have 10mm, 20mm or x73 and all of that is available on the 981. plus the 718 is heavier than the 981 and the 718 sounds like a ghost fart. the engine sounds of the n/a 981 just beggs to be pushed hard screaming all the way to 7500rpm. The 981 gts does 27mpg on the highway, so whats the 718 advantage 29 or 30mpg? i say nothing except more money for a far-less desirable vehicle.
turbo was fast. Now most people think it's a decent way to make a small efficient engine as powerful as a bigger one albeit with more lag, and worse sound. I guess people know its more complicated than that now
If you check the facts, the 981 base and S models have lower emissions than the 718 base or S. The 981 base and S are ULEV rated. "Ultra Low Emission Vehicle" where the 718 has a less efficient rating of LEV or "Low Emission Vehicle" which is the least efficient rating permitted in California. The sad thing is that in trying to decrease emissions with the 718 they actually increased them. For all Porsche's efforts they removed the sports car sound, arguably made it less attractive and sadly made it less efficient which has rewarded them with 40% less sales than the 981 over an equivalent time period.
+Alvin Brinson you can't even get a clutch pedal in a 4C, which also happens to have a turbocharged 4 banger. Can you get a stick in the new Lamborghinis or have they, too, moved to solely offering paddle shift?
Me too! I'm definitely going to hold on to it as well. I could one day envision it having the same sort of appeal (okay probably less but close) as the 993. At least that is what I am telling my wife!!!!
It would be rather funny if we ever reached a production car with a v24 cylinder engine, and then the following replacement would have to make due with a turbocharged v16. People would still complain. Its all relative. At least we still have the beautiful sounds of internal combustion available to us. There'll be a day when it won't. Enjoy the explosions. Enjoy the turbo whistle. Enjoy the breakdowns that are that flaw in cars, that exists in anything beautiful. Live in the now, appreciate the past and accept the future. Your life will be better off for it.
What exactly is your problem with turbos? A millisecond of lag under certain conditions? Ignoring that there's ways around that, it seems like a small price to pay for increased power, efficiency, fuel economy, and emissions. Also it sounds cooler.
+TheBIGJake111 That's a separate issue though. There's nothing preventing Porsche from putting turbos on the same flat 6 and producing more power with better efficiency while sacrificing basically nothing.
Nayr747 fleet vehicle averages, first the cayanne macan and panamera, all of which need at least a 6 to be competative and lastly they dropped the 911 to 3.0 6, they simply couldnt fit turbos into a mid engine design with a 6, they had to make it a 4 to put a stupid ass turbo on it.
Jeff K I'm not talking about enormous turbos. But they could make the same or slightly more power as the naturally aspirated 6, with greater efficiency, by detuning it and adding small to moderate sized turbos. They don't necessarily need to remove two cylinders to get increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions at the same power.
Just bought the 718 Cayman and was an owner of a previous 981 Generation-and other then the sound, the new 718 is dynamically better, in virtually every way. Excellent review by the way.
I like it, but I might be a little biased... Flat four has been in the Porsche genes from the beginning ... don't forget it
+johannes914 yeah but nobody heard a 914 and thought the sound was awesome, this kinda sounds like that
Great review. If it was my money i'd buy a second hand last gen Boxster. That engine-noise defines the car if you ask me.
+Timo B. Absolutely! Get the old GTS!
Too right, get the previous version. Turbo engines are killing off performance cars. No way is a turbo charged engine involving. Basically it's just s**t!

- yeah, you sound ecstatic AF :-)
+Doupik Hahaha, indeed!
I have a 2014 Boxster S with a 6 cylinder and I plan on keeping it. I think it will actually increase in value now that Porsche has gone to Turbo-4s.
Honestly, I prefer the sound of the 718. Ever since Porsche started putting roughly equal-length exhaust headers on their sixes, the sound has been a bit... clinical. looks like a mid 2000's toyota MR2

lol

This is actually one of the first reviews I have enjoyed, not boring like the ones before
Keep it on
Turbos are all about torque and power.
I take delivery of my 718 Saturday. I will refrain through from wearing the Primark sweater...
Ruined by the 4 pot turbo, Indeed.
+Dung Bag Happily the GT Models stay with a NA flat 6.
Marc Nobel Might not be the case for the 718 GTS in time to come, as the trademark of the 718 is its flat 4
Dung Bag
Not sure about the GTS, but Models like the GT4 will still go with NA flat 6. Same to GT3 and GT3 RS and R Model of the 911.
The four cylinder engine is a hugely better engine than the old six. I’ve just upgraded and it’s a hell of an upgrade.
Why? Because the flat 4 turbo is faster? I prefer speed, handling and fun over sound, any day
This should be a $40k range car. I'd buy it used and drive the hell out of it!
+IIproductionsII That is exactly what Mercedes Benz has done with their brand name. In the Southern US, every person wanting to look "high-end" is driving a bargain Merc and they look like crap. Mostly because these people cant afford the up keep on them.
it is but you have no add ons 😂
My 986 sounds beautifully refined when cruising at low revs/speed and puts a smile on your face when you open it up. The new one doesn't IMO.
Ruined by the turbo? Not exactly...
Ruined by the FOUR F****ING CYLINDER!!!!
+gas taber They've got plenty of famous cars with 4 cylinders. Having 4 cylinders never hurt them.
There is not much soul left in that guy, huh?
+Chrstian “Driver” mrclep Might be because of the car?
Kaipeternicolas really dude, really...
Kaipeternicolas No, he's actually always a bit cold and stoical.
***** no one said it was bad, beside you who haven´t drivin it...
I actually did like his presentation this time. He's certainly doing a better job than he did half a year ago.
My old 2000 Boxster S 3.2 sounds much better.
+18T220 Sounds like a race car with a straight pipe.
I guess the 6 cylinder Boxter Spyder/ Cayman GT4 will now increase in value even more.
+Neil Taylor They were already collectors' cars too. Damn, there go me dreams of having one in ten years
So many people going on about the sound of cars recently. A nice sound is... Nice. Not really of massive importance compared to how it drives though.
Good review. Tricky times when a writer knows that by ripping into a manufacturer they won't ask him to review their cars. Thus carefully constructed sentences...
0:42 With that DUG DUG DUG DUG DUG DUG, I was like "Is that Royal Enfield Bullet?"
I personally would absolutely love to have the cayman version of this.
I doubt the boxer 4 will affect standard Boxster or Boxster S sales at all. Here's hoping that they maintain 6 cylinders and natural aspiration for any special models though.
Riding a wave of midrange torque (because there isn't anything extra to be found at the top-end, no point revving it out), shouldn't be what a sportscar is about.
agree, gt yes...not a sports car though
agree, gt yes...not a sports car though
agree, gt yes...not a sports car though
+chaoticdog85 Merriam Webster would like to disagree with you
" a low small usually 2-passenger automobile designed for quick response, easy maneuverability, and high-speed driving"
That seems to fit the 718 build quite nicely.
Hang on to the flat 6's......instant keeper now!
Looking forward to the 718 introduction.
V6? you fucking daft mate?
maybe he jumped the track and was talking about their panamera V6? :-/ haha
Didn't you notice his screen name? He sure can tell 6 apart from 9.
Much better production quality on this video nicely done!
MCLAREN P1- ruined by the turbo?
eat this, british
slightly ... a little bit ... ever so minute ... might ... not sure ... slightly less ... not as much ...
Everything that made me want a Porsche has gone.
+MagicAyrtonforever They've had plenty of amazing 4-cylinder cars in their history. 356, 718 (the original), 912, 914, 924, 944, 968... not to mention their current Le Mans car. This one should be just as great.
Henry Floyd Just sounds wrong. Sorry. 914-4 was pants so was 924
MagicAyrtonforever Yeah I'm not a fan of those two either. But come on, can you really hate the original 718? Or the 356, or the 944 Turbo or the 919?
Henry Floyd It's not hatred, it's a total lack of interest.
MagicAyrtonforever You have a total lack of interest in those cars I mentioned? I guess there's no accounting for taste.
I don't see it selling that well to be honest, it's basically just the final straw to push a potential buyer to buy an F Type V6S
+S Miller If the sound preference is the deciding factor, maybe. But this is faster than an F-Type V6 S and will out handle it for days.
Mike Doolittle Buyers of these cars rarely go flat out though or take them to the track, for them it's all about how it makes you feel
+S Miller Well these cars drive better than the F-Type so the only advantage the F-Type has is the sound.
Paul Giamatti of the car world. Don't get me wrong, I value his opinion and he is a heck of a driver.
least involving review I've ever seen, i had to force myself to see it till the end.
I think it sounds awesome. It doesn't sound like a naturally aspirated flat six, but so what? I still want one.
Are you gunna get one?
Recently sold the last gen boxster, even though I'm moving on to bigger toys I have to say I'm going to miss it.
I like the progress, but I don't think the engineers did a very good job with the exhaust. That's not a very exciting sound.
if it sounds like that with a sports exhaust, it's better to make it a diesel.
I think another thing that hurts is the fact that they're even charging us thousands more over the outgoing model's base price..
Oh no, what have they done? I think it looks absolutely stunning but that sound (or lack of it!) is just awful. All this talk of lowering emissions, speed limits etc is just killing the very heart of a sports car. Are we just not allowed to have fun any more. Can we not stick to the 6 cylinder option if we agree to plant 6 trees with every purchase
i promise you this guy was taught this job by a librarian
no doubt, the GTS sounds better, but when I drove a new (leftover) GTS back to back with the 718S, I found the 718S to feel much more powerful and better in every way...also the GTS looked great, but immediately old as "last year's model" ... same price, I went for the 718S.... don't regret it.
It has no excitement and drama, it's boring, rather like this review. The Boxster has lost it's way.
Aircooled to watercooled was feasible. But moving from a flat 6 to a flat 4 is unbearable.
+Malteser3535 because?
Because of the sound, the free inertial force and the free mass moment, therefore you need a balance shaft. The flat six doesn't need that. This is why they are so torquey but still like to rev.
If you have the chance, drive a manual 911 Carrera S with the 3.8 flat six. You'll know what I mean.
Sorry for my bad engllish.
So wield watching a car drive on the correct side of the road!
New all electric on its way, glad I got my 718 ice!
GTS or Spyder model, because they killed it...
sebast007 The 981 is such a satisfying car to drive, better chassis than the 911 actually.
+VirusTornado
thank you sir, true very true.
would be great with the 3.8 and maybe 2 turbos. I drove a cayman with an x51 3.8 and a twin turbo kit the other day, very nice.
I actualy rather hear the turbo whistle than a 6 cylinder...
blasphemy.
+MikeVonDoom
I love turbos
+MikeVonDoom Owning both a 6 cylinder car and a 4 cyl turbo car, they do both have their own appeal no doubt about it... but I think I prefer the 6 cylinder sound more. It's always going to be an individual choice / preference though I guess.
+MikeVonDoom ew
+MikeVonDoom Depends on the engine. Exchanging a raw high rev flat 6 in this case is sad, but when you NA Lovers can still go with the GT Models.
A warning ...the EU is thinking of testing all cars at 75% power for noise which must not exceed 61 db.If you are thinking of buying a car with a loud exhaust you may have to get it modified at vast expense.
Eh, no. If the EU decides to regulate this, then it will be new cars that have to conform to this...not old cars :-)
As a potential 718 owner I have to say the sound of this car at least in this video is awful. I always hate the sound of the Subaru and this sounds like it. I'll wait until the launch and test drive it myself before I make judgement but unless it really influences me otherwise I'll either keep my 987 or buy a gen.1 981.
wait for the gt4 vers!
+joo baggs That would be a Cayman. I'm talking about the Boxster.
you meant DECREASING fuel consumption right?
Porsche already has a modern, efficient flat 6 motor... in the new 911s. Using a 4-pot for "emissions" is a bullish*t excuse. From where i stand, its Porsche's way of demoting the cayman/boxster to much below the 911 as the 981 cayman/boxster actually got better reviews that their bigger brother. Porsche felt they were losing sales of 911s to cayman/boxsters. Hence the 4-pot.
100% correct.
Yup. It's why I purchased a new Cayman S 981 when it first came out in 2014 over a 991. Looks better than a 911 too
+Michael Panayi I don't really know what is so demeaning about a 4 cylinder engine other than the sound, personally I find the concept of a middle placed turbo 2.5 flat four very attractive.
+Alex Serranoit
It 718 4 cylinder weights more than the 981 flat 6, because of the turbos and uses just as much fuel if not more when you punch it there is no advantage.
Ford Focus RS vs 2017 Porsche Boxter will be a great video to watch out for
4 pot turbo? Buy A Subaru BRZ and save $40k.
+scanspeak00 BRZ is N/A
Brz is atmospheric behh
+scanspeak00 BRZ is naturally aspirated and front engined. This is basically a mid engined BRZ with a turbo and way more power/torque. Worth it, I'd say
Take it to your favourite mountain road, drop the top, feel the balance and torque and enjoy the forest autumnal breeze. Then get back home through the highway comfortably listening to your favourite music and sleep happily.
Mid engined, usable power, not crazy expensive, reasonable mileage and gorgeous design. This car is all about experience and not performance.
Perfect road car in my opinion :)
couldn't pick a road with more bumps and tyre noise?
oh dear, what have Porsche done..... drove a Turbo S Cab recently.... I did not like it .. it's very capable... but it's so quiet and too refined.. I felt so detached.... I much preferred the 991.1 S and GT3 NA motors.... how I wish Porsche stick with NA at least with ALL GT cars for the foreseeable future
sound from the speakers , rigth?
Seems like a good car. Can't believe they settled on that 4 cylinder flat engine though.. Probably due to handling characteristics and so forth. Didn't want to sacrifice handling for a better engine noise(?). I think inline 4s with turbo sounds better and they have used that before in the 944 ex. 944 turbo with a slight tune actually sounded quite awesome back in the day. At least to me, the engine sound I can hear in the video does not remind me of any Porsche i can remember and that is a bit of a shame.
this car is heavier than the old v6, i dought the handling will be that much better.
+Butcheren0 I read that it is about 50kg heavier like-for-like (transmission and model) compared to the outgoing model. Similar story for the new turbo Carrera, because of intercoolers and such. So I don't see how it would handle better, it is the worse of both worlds.
+Tim I see. Well downsizing is upon us I guess =/
+TheCa007
They improved both brakes and suspension. It should handle better.
+Jeff K
the brakes where already good, its cheaper just to buy a larger set, and it has great handling already, great feel and weight. suspension depends on if they have 10mm, 20mm or x73 and all of that is available on the 981. plus the 718 is heavier than the 981 and the 718 sounds like a ghost fart. the engine sounds of the n/a 981 just beggs to be pushed hard screaming all the way to 7500rpm.
I guess people know its more complicated than that now
you mean reducing fuel consumption right? at 0:29
increasing mpg probably
Test it vs the old one on track and twisty roads, I bet it's no more fuel efficent than the old 6.
I'm probably the only one who's not paying attention to the sound but to how they made a freaking 4 cylinder accelerate 0-60 in 4.5s
They could have at least used unequal length headers to give it a more characterful STi type sound
+Xbox360Player350 Why the hell would they want to sound like a subaru?
+dumkopf Why would they want it to sound like an FR-S, as it does now?
Xbox360Player350 Well there are only so many ways it can sound. Why would they want to make it sound like a Subaru?
+dumkopf Most people prefer the boxer rumble over a generic 4 cyl vacuum cleaner type sound
Thumbs up for the honest review.
faster, cleaner, more effective.....I don't care I want a raw beast. not a shiny perfect Hoover.
+vivalaphill Yeah, you'd have to be a real sucker to want one of those.
+vivalaphill If you want a raw beast, you don't buy a Porsche. You buy something like a 4C or a Lamborghini.
+Alvin Brinson you can't even get a clutch pedal in a 4C, which also happens to have a turbocharged 4 banger.
Can you get a stick in the new Lamborghinis or have they, too, moved to solely offering paddle shift?
Sounds like you want a Lotus
nice review! guess i could get use to the sound and turbo lag lol
Its 350bhp for the S model NOT 340. (I attended the Cheshire Oaks unveiling this week so took pictures of the stats)
who cares??
Glad I bought the 981 revving to 8.000 RPM sorry
Me too! I'm definitely going to hold on to it as well. I could one day envision it having the same sort of appeal (okay probably less but close) as the 993. At least that is what I am telling my wife!!!!
+AN D1 I I does not rev to 8K, duh.
+Baerchenization 7.800, thanks for hating
+AN D1 It's not the same thing...
+Nayr747 whats wrong with turbos is that they come with less cylinders. Drive a flat 6 porsche and try and watch this video without sheding a tear.
+Nayr747
Actually there is, once you overpower the chassis you have to start adding things like AWD.
Jeff K I'm not talking about enormous turbos. But they could make the same or slightly more power as the naturally aspirated 6, with greater efficiency, by detuning it and adding small to moderate sized turbos. They don't necessarily need to remove two cylinders to get increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions at the same power.
emissions? How did they build the Shelby GT350 with over 400+ bhp V8 natural assperated???
Very good review. ....enjoyed that. ....thanks.
does it even increase mpg in the real world as opposed to spoofed numbers ????
This Boxster 718 S drives much more fun and wild than ANY 6-cylinder sportscar. You don't like the sound? Your loss
Imagine a world where Porsche make a change to a car and people don't complain...
