My great, great grandad came from Moate. His parents wanted him to have Moate in his name to celebrate where his family came from after they emigrated, now all the men in my family have it as their middle name :) would be cool to visit one day.
My great grandfather came from here then closed his saw mill, gave the land to a priest with a handshake to build a church. He went to England but ended up living in Belfast where he passed away. He changed his name from owen O'dowd to owen Dowds because of the hate of the Irish in Britain. Married 3 times. Alcoholic but very religious. Our family still live in Belfast today. Family went to moat to visit family years ago the parish priest heard and thought we where down to take the land back. 😆 🤣 😂 I'm sure we could but it was our great grandfather's wish and it will stay that way.
