  • Now I'm in The Green Runners, one of my pledges was to do one day of conservation for every ultra that I film for Wild Ginger Running UA-cam channel. This is Day #1 in return for the Arc of Attrition 50 mile ultra in Cornwall in January, sphagnum planting in the Goyt Valley, Peak District, with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC).
The BMC is the national representative body for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers in England and Wales. They work to protect access to climbing and hill walking areas, as well as promoting responsible and sustainable use of the hills and mountains.
Amazingly, as well as editing their membership magazine Summit, the BMC have also employed me to lead the comms on their two charitable enterprises this year - The Climate Project and Mend Our Mountains. So this BMC staff day out planting sphagnum moss as part of The Climate Project fitted in super well with my green pledge.
I took the train to Sheffield for a lift to the Goyt Valley with 3 other colleagues so minimise my carbon footprint. Working in partnership with Moors for the Future, we planted almost 5,000 sphagnum plugs between the 20 of us, helping to stabilise the peat bog and lock in carbon and water.

It's great that The Climate Project involves practical, UK-based, scientifically-proven projects that really work to lock away that pesky carbon stuff. Planting sphagnum can have a greater impact than planting trees, and so can seagrass, the latest edition to The Climate Project portfolio. This is brilliant, and a great idea to make that pledge. You’ve inspired me to look into what I can do locally to offset my race travels. Thank you!

What a great pledge Claire! I'm a member of the Green Runners as well. I need to find something similar near me although there aren't many peat bogs in London! Well done!

Ha ha yes well I think others might not be as glam, litter picking around Rutland Water might be next! I'm sure there are lots in London too!
