In only three years one of Germany’s largest forests has turned from dark green tree cover to a graveyard of dead wood. The reason: rising temperatures and monoculture forestry.
In our third mission, we have partnered with Harz National Park, to turn things around and transform this stressed ecosystem into a strong and climate resilient forest.
A big thank you to heiermann4future for facilitating this mission.

I like the work you do ur doing what i thought of doing but my country rules n regulations have be worsening day by day so ur dreams get shettered.keep the good work
Good that you planted birch it help protect the spruce against bark Beatles.
Don't blame the mass dying of spruce on 'climate warming/changes'; as you said yourself, it was NOT a natural area for spruce to grow, especially as a monoculture! This mass dying event was a blessing in disguise, as an artificial monoculture was destroyed and some other trees apart from spruce got chance to grow naturally.
Pollution, and trash are a real problem, but blaming many events on climate change is logically and scientifically wrong. As I understood, tree species now were planted that used to grow over there 500 years ago. So how is it related to climate change? Very political, not scientific, or did I misunderstand something?
"Even though we´re surrounded by thousands of dead trees, we´re not standinng in a dead forest." Yes, you said it twice already but it´s worth mentioning over and over. This is a teaching at the heart of what people need to understand about the processes of wild life. Life is everywhere! Thank you, well said.
Teaching people to see beneath the surface is always a good lesson. That's where the truth lies.
@@voiceinthenoise3357Yes! In so many areas of life and being...;)
These spruce trees have been living on borrowed time all along, but very sad to see them die all at the same time. Good job on accelerating the natural restoration
Thanks for your encouragement 🙏💚

Thanks a lot for your encouragement! 💚

Biodiversity is such an important part of a healthy ecosystem!
Thanks for making sure that the forest will have a more robust defence against the bugs and humans 🐛
It is!
Thanks for helping us do it. All of this would be impossible without our community. 💚
Every bit helps 😊🌎✨
Take care of the few older trees that are left as they are very important too to combat the bark beetle in the future. A forest of mixed age trees is just as important as mixed species to be resilient because the bark beetle mostly kills trees when they are a certain age.
Interestingly when native south American shamen were consulted they actually said the beetle was helping to restore the ecosystem, the spruce bark beetle is helping nature heal
Thank you for replanting this forest, I have always worked in forestry as a harvester and we always make sure that every tree we cut has at least 2-3 trees for every 1 tree we cut and I at least leave creeks and beds for animals I don’t touch those place again thank you for replanting this forest
Seeing people do this kind of thing to help save the planet when all I normally hear about in the world is doom and gloom is really inspiring, you just earned a loyal sub and supporter today. Keep up the good work and I'll try to help any way I can! :)
Thanks so much for your feedback and welcome to our community! 💚 Happy to have you onboard and support great projects together!

you probably do one of the most important jobs in the world and your grandkids will be thankful
Thanks for your encouragement Wolfgang! 💚
Crazy all those dead trees. The apocalyptic vibe gave me chills
Yeah, it was really heart-breaking to see so many dead trees. 😥 Luckily we can look forward to a new healthy forest reemerging there soon! 🌳🌲🌳
I went camping in Harz region last year and it was indeed shocking how fast this ecosystem had collapsed. Amazing to see you guys are doing something about it, proud to be a backer ❤️
Yes, it's shocking how quickly a change of this magnitude can happen! 🤯
Thanks for supporting this mission! We are really happy to have you on board 💚
Finally a new mission!
You guys did a fantastic job again, thank you!
Can’t wait for the next one!💪🏼
Thanks for your encouragement! It means the world to us 💚😊
together we unite, together we make this world a better place to live. thank you and sending you love for reviving this forest.
Thanks for your encouragement 💚
What have you done,for example?
And before you ask,i dont even mean it as it sounds. All good intentions😊Its the thing, you dont know, what you can do,if you focus on one thing or theme.
I was restoring a trout stream spawning areas before the season, demolishing beaver dams etc,and it was so upliftng to see a river come to life, hundreds of offsprings in the river.Unfortunately, the river was destroyed due to a animal farming accident right at the start of the stream and about 15000dead trout were gathered from the stream, not counting those finger long offsprings. But the nature takes over anyway,2 years later there was life on the spawning grounds once again😊
So cool! Very interesting point about it NOT being a dead forest ... fascinating to learn about all the life in this tree graveyard.
Keep up the amazing work 🌳💪💚
Yes! Nature is truly amazing. 🪄
Thanks for your support - it really means a lot to us! 💚
Nature.
Ich war im März im Harz. Es war erschreckend! Danke das ihr was tut!
Yeah, it's really overwhelming to see all these dead trees 😥.
Thanks for your encouragement!
I love this! I have a personal mission to rewild urban spaces. I encourage everyone I know to craft water features in their yards. I will also help people who need it. Adding water features like small ponds creates spaces for animals. Birds, frogs, and small mammals will use yard ponds as sources of water. When drought comes, amphibians use it to breed, and small prey draws raptors and provides food for foxes. Recently, a local wetland dried during an extremely hot summer , and we found a turtle trying to get through to our pond. We helped him out, and he/she spent the hot season with us. When the rains came and the wetlands refilled, we returned him to his natural environment. Build a pond create an ecosystem.
That is fantastic! It's so important that we do our share and spread the word! Thanks for sharing it here, as well! 💚
Would you say that having similar water features on the balcony would make sense as well? Clearly, only birds and insects would be able to use them...
@planet-wild All water sources help in dry times, it is best if you also have plants around them to provide shelter moving water stays cleaner. Low balconies where I live would probably get small tree frogs as well.
Thank you for this important work! I live on the countryside, but I get so happy everytime I hear some cityfolk talking sense :D
But really, imagine (as I guess you have already done) what could be achived with our cities! There is sooo much space there to rewild, inviting animals and plants to co-exist, and it would only bring benefits also to humans.
it's great to see people doing what they can to make a difference, sending love
Thanks Lucas! 💚
It is important.
I basically grew up in that forest. in a sense. It's so near by the area I grew up, we went there multiple times every weekend in the summer. I absolutly remember the dense trees, the biodiversity. Seeing it now is soo, soo shoking. it really hurts.
Yeah, we feel you. 😔 It is really devastating to see what's happening in the Harz. Partnering up with the Harz National Park and supporting their efforts to make the forest more resilient give us hope for a better future for this region. 🌱🌳
@@planet-wild and then, you have the people living in the area and still claiming climate Change isn't real...
Die angepflanzten Fichtenwälder waren schon immer eine öde Landschaft. Ich war da oft genug Pilze sammeln.

I was there last year, it was very sad to see the state the forest was in. You’re doing great work!
Yeah, it's truly devastating to see what happened there. 😔

Happy to have you here 💚
I really like the video, and I love their mission. But what has to be said here is that the commune that manages the Harzer national park could do much more to flourish the forest again. I haven’t seen any indication that the commune does anything for the forest while hiking there 3 weeks ago
It breaks my heart when i think of this thought that the humanity tries with all strength to save the planet and Dont minding the fact that this planet is soon outlived..
A very heartbreaking thought..
Much love to you guys the Harz my home ❤
Thanks! 💚
Im very thankful. I have been doing reserach for germany forestation projects this is one of the first i have discovered.
Thank you for expediting the reforestation of Harz Park!
Awesome job! ❤

Brilliant!!!!👏👏👏👏
Thanks 💚
You should collab with mossy earth! Another youtube channel who also does rewilding with community donations! Its always better to have 2 groups work together for a common goal!
Great work! 🌳🌲🌳 It was not mentioned or visible in the video, but I hope enough of the dead wood is left there among the new plantings because it is crucial for a healthy ecosystem and in turn it will make the forest more resilient to climate change.
Also to combat the bark beetle it has been proven that a natural forest with a diversity of ages in the trees is really important as they are most vulnerable in a certain age a norwegian study showed. If a forest is comprised of trees that all have the same age it is much more vulnerable at a point in time when the bark beetle can kill them all instead of just a section.
This is such an inspiring and noble project! Thank you for your dedication and hard work to restore the forest and its biodiversity. You are making a positive difference for the planet and future generations. 🌲🌳🌿

thank you!💗
🌳💚
You may want to fence the areas that are planted, if the pressure from deer etc is too high, as they will eat all the new trees.
Also keep in mind, that these old plantations where often drained, so restoring the natural streams/hrodrology etc can also be key.
Mossy Earth may have some experience from Scotland and Eastern Europe.

You and mossy earth are my favorite environment youtube channels right now, instead of talking about the effects of global warming you guys actually go out their an solve environmental issues on a small and large scale
Thanks so much! 💚
I wasn't aware of this lage scale disaster in my own country. Damage caused by drought and bark beetle yes but not this impact here. I noticed tree species disussions - most of the native ones missed the future requirements.
Yeah, with so many things happening around the world, it’s hard to be on top of everything. This is one of the reasons why we think it’s important to spread the word about environment and biodiversity through such videos. The more people know about the true nature of problems, the sooner we can start working in solutions! Glad to hear that you’ve learnt something new 🙏💚
It is interesting that the spruce bark beetle cleared out the monoculture, thats why the native South American shamen brought in to consult on reforestation said they are a blessing
@@ConstantChaos1 Travelled to Alaska recently, well our friend did a great job. But the roughly 50% birch trees are still standing
@mffmYT im super confused I'm talking about German Spruce Beetles not Alaskan Birch Trees
I am glad to hear you had a good trip tho Alaska is beautiful
I mean the spruce bark beetle is the most damaging insect in Alaska's forests. The difference is that the forrests are a mixed spruce forests / birch - 50% is still green.

Amen! 😊🌎✨
because "god" doesn't exist, if it did, why isn't it solving the damn problems? Humans created the problems, humans created "gods" and therefore humans are the only ones who can solve this. Believing in non-existent beings and expecting them to solve it is perpetuating the problem! Unicorns, Yetis, Vampires, Gods... none of these will solve the problem, humans will, if we want to.
Truly blessed 😇

Hey! I liked the video :)
Just one thing: 6:41
The beech you showed (Fagus ferrugina?? ) is none that grows here.
The only beech growing species over here is Fagus sylvatica (Rot-Buche in german,
So thats probably where the mistake comes from). She is the 'strongest' tree when it comes to dominate a forest - over a long time
Happy you liked the video and thanks for shedding more light on the beech situation 🙏🏻

Biodiversity is such an important part of a healthy ecosystem!
Thank you for everything you and your group are doing; for your country, for the animals and for our planet. The way you make your videos they clear in communicating the problems and visually exciting to watch.
I hope, as a former educator that you are getting the word out to all schools about your videos.
Perhaps a, “ If you are sharing these videos with your schools show us on social media and we will bring in the local animal rehab group for a visit to your school.” Free PR, free PR for rescue groups and better more engaging education. With a appropriate opportunity to help if your a young person.
I don’t know if you have it already ( perhaps a retired science teacher volunteer could create) but a natural tie in of lesson plans and a synopsis for the teachers would be cool.
Also a tie in for young people volunteer opportunities would be a great project for a team of young people to work on as a school or college project that could be done for a grade.

Thanks for your willingness to support our rewilding missions! 💚
Well done Planet Wild!! :) Thank you for doing your research on polyculture vs monoculture prior to planting. How fortuitous to have all that decaying wood and standing snags. It should provide a fantastic food for saprophytic fungi and habitat for diverse species, including birds of prey. It should also increase your fungi-to-bacteria ratio significantly, which is usually a sign of a mature forest successional stage. Since this area was a monoculture for so long, please make sure to inoculate with relevant mycorrhizal species to facilitate the networking relationships necessary to support the forest, especially during times of drought and stress. There are water-soluble mycorrhizal spore mixtures which can be applied well after planting. All the best. Cheers.
Were the trees you planted pre-inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi? If not, would you please consider doing this for future plantings? Thanks again for the amazing work you do :)
You guys give us so much hope!!!
Greetings from the forest of Biscay.
If you dont quit the down part and the roots of the fallen tree it has no sense to plant a new one near it, where the roots start to rotten and will affect the development of the young one.
You can also paint the base of the tree for ants and other animals to dont climb up ad remain healthy.
Nice work dude we have to change this together.
Jo ta ke, Irabazi arte.
There's still debate whether replanting or natural regrowth are better. A similar situation occurrred since the 1990s in the Bohemian forest, Bavarian Forest in Germany and adjacent, still bigger Šumava in Czechia. These areas still need time to recover, but they also had those spruce monocultures. Now it's increasingly mixing up with rowan, ash, beech, maple, fir. But it's still a rather barren landscape to the eye, just the dead trees have decayed meanwhile.
Hey, liebe Grüße von Astro Tim. Danke für euren großartigen Job. Unsere Kinder werden es euch danken. Mach weiter so und gebt niemals auf. Danke❤
