Yes it is good to be a team player and that is exactly what THIRD PART OR THIRD CHAIR PLAYERS ARE: TEAM PLAYERS!
No glory, no excitement, no star power, but....YOU GET TO BE THE TEAM PLAYER!
Nothing wrong with that at least...for a little while, but wake up!
You be the team player for a bit then move up the ladder to the melody, to the solos, to BEING HEARD!
Someone else can get to be the team player for a while.
It's the same as being the dishwasher in the back room of the restaurant to being the bartender or server at the front end of the restaurant.
Which one has more fun? ...more exposure? ....more social engagement? ...more money? ...more prestige?
    Which one is easily replaceable?
ANYONE can wash dishes and so what if you screw up? Nobody will notice. You can always run that plate back through the washer again, right?
Dishwashers ARE always replaceable...no problem at all.
    Now...a good bartender? Server?
No, my friend, very very hard to find the right bartender for your restaurant or friendly, fast efficient server..THEY ARE THE STARS!
Your restaurant will succeed or fail based on these 2 positions because no matter how good the food is, if that food is served sloppily by an unfriendly waiter/server? That restaurant will be closed for good faster than you can say AL CASS VALVE OIL!
The above restaurant scenario is almost exactly like the 3rd trumpet or trombone player in any typical concert, symphonic, or wind ensemble band or orchestra.
I can find a 3rd trumpet player or bone player anywhere, anytime, anyplace! I bet I could even find a homeless transient person to play 3rd chair...np!
And? if they miss a note or 2? play a bit out of tune? Who will notice?
If a star 1st trumpet player misses the HIGH C at the very end of the concert, who will notice?
EVERYBODY including the people in the parking lot outside who weren't even at the concert!!!
    Feel me?
There is no glory in playing 3rd trumpet or trombone. Yes, be a team player TEMPORARILY and do your community feel good service, but in short order, work your way up to the big leagues at 1st Trumpet or 1st Bone!
    YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share that there are other alternatives that he did not mention. If you have an overbite, I might be able to help you. My front teeth cover all of my bottom teeth. For me, I was able to get a really good tone by opening up my teeth, angling the horn down at about 15° and tilting my head back slightly. When you are trying to figure out how much to open your teeth, imagine a pencil eraser. Spread your teeth enough to where that would fit in between your top and bottom teeth. I hope this helps some of you! This is how I got above the staff, into the upper register.

I just have to work harder with my overbite, I get exhausted having to move my lower jaw forwards which strains me when I try to reach anything higher than third octave a

I'd like to supply a resource I have recently just discovered. I had always known that I had an overbite. I do have a lesson teacher that helped me to get to where I am today. The only thing was, when I always would reach a certain high note in my playing, I wouldn't be able to go any higher. Anyway, I found this book from Roy Stevens that talks about the Costello method. Basically in the book, there's an embouchure self- analysis. I found that when I pushed my lower jaw to align with my upper teeth, then shifted my embouchure placement a little up(combined with using tongue arch), I seemed to have an easier time going higher in range. I also supplied mouthpiece pressure only on the bottom lip rather than both lips as this can help.(might be confusing). This has to do with making an "up-stream" direction with the air. I'm not saying that doing this will completely grant you unlimited range(because trumpet actually takes work), but it may help if someone wants to try to gain a way to make screaming easier. It's worth a try. However, I would not recommend trying this if you have an extensive over-bite as over time it can lead to jaw problems such as TMJ which is joint pain in your jaw.
P.S.- Also wedge breathing combined with this may help with screaming.

Even though I am a proponent of Roy Stevens, his upstream, jaw forward deal is a bit too gimmicky for me. I would focus on EMBOUCHURE STRENGTH first which is King then reevaluate!

Overbite really sucks for small mouthpieces. My lips got so uncomfortable to the point where I just switched to low brass. The wider mouthpiece felt so much better.

    Interesting. I think I am
overcoming an overbite challenge by pivoting the horn and making adjustments to my lower jaw. I don't have a tutor right now but hope to have one soon who could scrutinize my challenge and adaptations closely and unbiasedly.

I struggle with tonguing and did research. I have an underbite and 5 to 10 percent of the population is actually born with it. I'm seeing so many over bite comments any suggestions for me as someone with an underbite. I don't struggle to much with range but I have been told it is an advantage, but I struggle with simple things??

You trying this out without any professional help instruction will likely get you nowhere. This is an observation for you to take seriously but be working with a professional brass instructor.

if you have an overbite, do NOT spend all your time and energy trying to work around it...the best thing to do is change instruments...if you want to stay in brass, go to baritone, trombone, or tuba...or switch to sax or clarinet where jaw/teeth formation is not that important...when i started trumpet at age 10, i wish someone had told either me or my parents that i was in for a lot of work and would actually be better off switching instruments...but, no...everyone glossed over that and egged me on...i had a piano background, so i was able to read and do a lot of stuff musically that others couldn't or were much slower at, such as sightreading...when i graduated from high school, i gave up the trumpet altogether knowing that i would NOT be able to fool all of the people all of the time as i had done for 7 years...mostly, i was just fooling myself...

NOT! I had an idiot band director with YOUR attitude tell me the same thing. I have an overbite...better head on over to baritone.
Now? That band director is not even good enough to be my fluffer or carry in my case before I play!

I actually played better when I had an overbite and braces. Once I got my braces off, I had such a rough time.no. Tater how. UCB I practiced, it just wouldn’t feel right.
