Four and a half years ago while training for my first marathon I stumbled on your film "THE WHY | Running 100 Miles". It was the first time I'd ever heard of a hundred miler. The themes of using running to push beyond our normal existence, test our limits, and fully engage in life in this way really spoke to me. I knew almost immediately that some day I needed to experience 100 miles. This year, I'm running my first ever 100 miler at Run Rabbit Run in steamboat. I literally would not be on this path without your videos!
After years and years of dreaming and working and pushing beyond my outer limits I am ready to take on what (was) my most Secret wish. This October I am signed up and will run my first ever 100 miler. I will give everything I have to finish. I am so excited for the training, for the “training races” and the actual day/days out. Thanks for all of the inspiration Billy!
First of all congrats to you and Hilary! I've been watching your videos some years back and those with Sally McRae were really inspiring. My goal is to run my third 50K, been dealing with a nagging knee and lower back injuries. Living here in AZ has not been the best , the weather, etc. I'm from San Diego and miss the climate and the city. But my goal is to return back to CA for my third 50K. Gracias! I wish both of you the best! ✌️👍
Love your videos Billy. You had an awesome year last year! I am hoping to get another 100 miler this year. I haven't ran one since 2020. My soul needs it!
So true! Life is always better with family and friends! Getting back to running is my goal this year. In 22' and part of 23' I was dealing with a stubborn case of plantar fasciitis which kept me from running, but my foot seems to be "back to normal". I won't be doing any ultra's just yet, but maybe a half or a full marathon is not out of the question! Brilliant work Billy!
Awesome - just make sure you have great, supportive people in your corner and plan for every potential issue...so much of running 100 milers is problem solving. You're going to do great!
Hi Billy. I discovered your videos through following amazing Sally and enjoy listening to your words of wisdom. I am not sure what my pearl of wisdom for life would be. Maybe simply to keep moving forward and fight the excuses. I am so much more resilient and tenacious at 51 than I was at 21, and with that happier. Running grounds me and has done for about 40 years now. This year I am doing the marathon distance of a Trailrun in Eastern Germany called The Rennsteiglauf. I did the Ultra version last year, but don't want to feel quite so wrecked all the time since I am a teacher and my youngest is in her final year of High School here in Leipzig. Isn't it great how running connects us all over the World. Keep doing your great work. Best wishes to you and your family.
Thanks for sharing, Billy. You had an awesome 2023! For me, 2024 brings Hardrock!! I got in off the Nevers list with 4 tickets and, at my age, I am super excited/scared/committed at being successful with this once in a lifetime opportunity. I'll also be trekking the TMB with my wife. Here's to a great 2024!
You are just a nice person doing what you love and it comes through with authenticity in your videos. My goal this year is to run the Petra Desert Marathon in Jordan in September. Done a few half marathons including the 23 km last year in Chamonix but never a full marathon
Billy, every year I rewatch your 2015 and 2016 year end videos. I especially love the one titled One Wild and Precious Life (or something alike) and this year was no different. I appreciate how you seem to live a life with purpose and intention. Every year I also wait patiently for another one of your year-end recaps/New year video. You've outdone yourself again and thank you for not making me weep like a little boy who dropped his ice cream cone on the sidewalk. Needless to say, I am a big fan, small time Patreon member blah blah blah. I hope to meet you face-to-face one day and thank you for the inspiration you’ve placed upon me. I live on the East Coast, just outside of Washington DC. I almost went up to New York City this past year just to join your pre-race shake our run at New York City marathon. my schedule wouldn’t allow it to happen. Surely, someday I'll make it out to a film release of yours or finally sign up for a trail race on the West Coast. I'll be that old-man-fanboy. 🤓 Until then, all the best to you and your loved ones. 🖖🏻
A couple big goals this summer, beating my 2023 time at Mammoth Trail Fest 50k following that by running my very first road marathon back where I grew up in Kansas City. Big goals and even bigger dreams!!
Got into the OCC after running the Canyons 50k for the past two years - also ran Berlin Marathon and currently training for the Ventura Marathon - also trying to get under 5 min for the mile - 52 yrs old - live in Pasadena - train mostly around the rose bowl - love to connect for a run -
After some really bad luck at Pinhoti 100, sinus infection going full blast the day before, I hit my first DNF ever at my first 100 miler. I look forward to trying again in 2024! Making those buckle dreams come true. 70.3 on an stomach that couldnt't take in food was great. Just not great enough to let me t enough to get me to the end.
Lovely video and sentiment. My answer to the wisdom of life would be keep moving and love your family and friend. So simpatico. My big 2024 goal is to finish the Issy Alps 100 - 3rd time is the charm!
Planning on the double crossing of the GC in April. Worried. You are inspiring . the most difficult physical challenge i've done is the 26 mile/5k elv. gain Phoenix 7 Summit Challenge. R2R2R is twice that. How to gain the confidence I need ... keep hiking... keep moving forward. Thank YOU.
Happy new year to you to Billy!. I'll be tipping my toes into the ultra distance for the first time this year with a 50k trail in May. Depending how that goes maybe some more later in the year.
Great 2023 Billy! What scares and excited me at the same time this year is the Ouray 100! I saw Sally and Hillary at the Bigfoot 200 this year for the 1st time! They were so cool and chill. :D. Wish you the bests for 2024!
Thank you so much for sharing your journey and being a good inspiration to others. It was a real pleasure being a part of your 2024 NYD Trail Run and meeting you and Hilary in person, and the rest of the crew.
Hi Billy! Been following you for God knows how long and I've loved watching you grow, both professionally and in your personal life. If I'm on the bike, I'm probably watching The Why, Western Time, or Mont Blanc to get the stoke wheel churning. I just set a 50k PR at Bridle Trails 50k on Saturday with a shiny 6:01:15 and I'll be coming in guns blazing into Black Canyon 100k to get that third WSER qualifier! Wishing you, Hilary, and Charlie all the best in the new year :)
Congrats on an incredible year, Billy! Been a fan of your videos for a while - thanks for continuing to make them. My goal for this year is to run my first 100k (Miwok), and the surrounding months I have a few 50 milers and 50ks as well. Excited for a busy year and new challenges.
Loved this and thanks for you always inspiring reflections. Your videos helped play a part inspiring me to run my first 50miler last year. This year I’ll try my first 100k by flying from the States to Australia for the Guzzler 100k in July.
Hey there Billy! Chatted with you for a few minutes at Mammoth trail fest before doing my first 50k! Been meaning to thank you for the advice. While solo pursuits can be rewarding, those big challenges in life are best lived when shared with friends absolutely. Not sure what big adventure holds for this year but hope to make it back to Mammoth this fall! 🎉
I’m so happy for you! What an epic adventure. My BHAG goal in 2024 is my first 50-miler after several 50k’s. And my person, if I’m so lucky, to call my own:
You wont see this but man I would love to join you on an adventure, running, filming or whatever. I have been doing the Running UA-cam thing for 9 years and am an "East Coast" trail ultra runner (I'm a married father of 5) have run over 20 ultra and my finished my 1st 100 this year...love filming and making short movies about my races and adventures. Have always loved your work in this space. Trails are my therapy, my happy place and man do those images of the mountain take your breath away or what?! Be Well.
I get such enjoyment out of watching your videos, it’s been a struggle the last three months as a try to get healthy from a fractured foot. My hope for the coming months is to remain healthy. And have an opportunity to work on my mileage base. I so envy the community, and what you’re a part of, I wish I had that. I look forward to your upcoming videos and your upcoming trips. Be well.
Hey Billy! a couple of years ago you inspired me to leave a mark in my life thanks to your film "The Why: running 100 miles". That was the trigger for me to set myself a big hairy audacious goal of one day running a 100 miler to set an example for my children and teach them the value of hard work. in 2023 I finished UTMB and made a film dedicated to my children. In this film I mention your inspiration : ua-cam.com/video/EA3YFYwEPAg/v-deo.htmlsi=9ULXuqyVmd2KVkJc
I’m aiming to run three marathons in 2024, hoping for one to be at 3:40 or below. I plan to volunteer at Leadville’s Silver Rush 50mi and 100mi races this year, meet some great people, and start to find my way into the trail and ultra community, to hopefully find my people. Thank you for all of the videos throughout the year Billy!
I did UTMB CCC in 2023, winning the lottery with just 1 running stone and crossing the finish line in Chamonix was just a miracle. I am 58, full of injuries (from dancing Ballet since 5). After UTMB, I signed up for 100 m Grindstone UTMB 2024. I never did anything like that and I am old and getting 59 this year. So if I ever want to try it this is my only and the last chance. I am coming from Serbia alone and since I have no running friends in the USA I will be without any support in that race. I wonder whether is it possible to rent a pacer (at least for the second night if I even make to it)?
Happy 2024! Plans for 2024: * SD100 * AC100 * New York City Marathon Having completed 2 solo 100s, my hope is to run SD and AC with crew and/or pacers. Because what you said is so true: You can go at it alone, but they are really more special when they’re shared.
long time fan/admirer/supporter of the films and what you & hilary have built together - i am going to attempt my first trail 50 miler this year, at home in colorado. any chance that hilary wants to take on coaching? or any recs for a budget-friendly trail coach? long shots but had to put it out there 😊
Hi Billy, thank you for sharing. My aspirations for 2024 are to regain my fitness, stay healthy, maybe travel from the UK to attempt the LS100k. And most importantly spend quality time and adventure with my partner and soulmate Jen. Adventure Always Paul

Got my ass kicked trying my first 50mi in 2022 but ended up DNF. Coming back with vengeance this year to conquer.
🤘🏼
@@BillyYang Finished the 50mi in case you wondering!!!
My first 100-miler (and I am terrified). Thank you and Happy New Year, Billy and Hilary!!

I've only hit the 50K distance but those trails look amazing. I did run the NYC Marathon and it was amazing.
