I love his comment about being calm and that when you are calm you can live in a good way. I am also a HUGE fan and believer in his thoughts on consistency, I started running 2 years ago after being diagnosed with high blood pressure, fatty liver and very much overweight. 2 years later I am running for my Boston qualifier in 5 days! I run 6-7 days a week and never miss a run. Consistency and volume was crucial to my success. Eliud is my main inspiration for how I train.
Confidence is like an umbrella in the rain. It will not chase away the rain but will allow you to stand in the rain. I recently ran a new half marathon PB in horrific wind and rain At first my confidence was knocked because I knew the weather was going to make this run hard. But, I had confidence in my MAF and threshold focussed training along with my discipline and consistency. I knocked 1.5 mins off of my previous PB. Eliud you're an inspiration to us all!
My favorite lesson is his ability to stay calm, smile and just do the work. Amazing how he is able to do positive self talk without the gritty emotional push some people believe is necessary to make the self-talk work.
Planning and journaling. And his joy. Seeing himself as the best - the confidence. How he reads a lot, not just about running, about many aspects of life. Thank you for a great interview 😊
What l particularly enjoyed was something Eliud said that "self confidence is like an umbrella, when you have an umbrella and it's raining, an umbrella can't chase away the rain but it can make you to stand in the rain. That's confidence."
"It all starts with the family" i truly resonate with this. My foundation is my wife and kids and they give me the energy to run and be a better husband and father.
Mine was as well, my friend. Till this month my wife asked for a divorce after 20 years together and 2 children. More than half the meaning of my life is gone. 😢

My favorite takeaway: when asked about any systems he uses etc he responded simply “it’s about decision”. It’s that simple, decide to do it and do it. Beautiful.
imagine that the tools and systems after a certain point take one away from being in tune with one's body... the root of decision is to remove... to remove all that is unnecessary allows the power of simplicity to show itself
For me, the best takeaway from the video is at 23:22 Learning to embrace the sweetness of the pain when you're running for long. Today I ran my first ever 10K in a hilly trail and I was almost stopping but I ignored my thoughts and kept going, at the 7KM all the pain had vanished and I could just see my legs floating in the air, the pain helped me realize some hidden energy reserve that prior to that I had never utilized. I'm planning to continue running on that hilly trail more times and gradually make it x2, then x4 to become my own marathon.
I really admire Mr. Kipchoge so very much. His mind is so calm, his thoughts so clear and focused, and his messages so powerfully simple. As you so rightly said Floris, Eliud is not just a professional runner, but a philosopher, teacher and mentor. Your summary at the conclusion of the video was excellent. Eliud is truly a remarkable man.
I love the Health is wealth sentiment. I started my running journey overweight and struggling to run for more than 30 seconds to a minutes to finishing over 100 marathons and losing 70+ pounds in the process. Invest in yourself!
Eluid is a wonderful human being and deserves none of the hate that he has received over Kiptums passing. Lets hope that this dark cloud can lift for him leading up to, and including the Paris Olympic Marathon. He looked a very sad man in this podcast, and we all know that mental well being is the key to any performance.
A great lesson for me is to stay calm! The calm we can stay, the better decisions we can make, leading to a better life. Control what you have in your hands, and the plan your next move! Kipchoge, you are a role model to me and my kids, and I so grateful for your inspiration!!!!
My favorite thing is how consistently (pun intended) he mentions consistency in training and in life. Sometimes I get tired of hearing this as advice, but the reality is it is always mentioned because it sits as the orbiting point. I appreciate how Eliud never tries to make up something new or catchy with his advice, just the evergreen truth.
As a beginner runner, Eliud Kipchoge's words have been a guiding light for me. One phrase that truly moved me is, 'only the disciplined are free.' This idea has changed my approach to running and life, reminding me that discipline in my training not only brings freedom in performance but also in the way I live. Thank you, Eliud, for being a constant source of inspiration and teaching us the true value of discipline! 💪
the way he enjoyed tells about his joy when running....shows his commitment and love for marathoning..."The only way to enjoy your life is run. Fell the sweetness in running...just come take a shower and go to work".
So many takeaways! You just wake up in the morning and go. Self confidence is like an umbrella. Embrace running to find joy and health. Thank you for your videos!
The thing I’ve taken most from this video is the comparison of self confidence to an umbrella protecting you from the rain. The umbrella doesn’t stop the rain, but it gives you a shield to allow you to go about what you’re doing. I’ve had a couple of events not go to plan and it affects self confidence a lot. You begin to doubt whether you can improve on your previous performances. The fear of not performing has been there my last few events and I’m in the process of rebuilding that self confidence. When I rebuild it fully, I’ll be protected from those events that have gone wrong and be able to believe I can go out and beat my times. It’s a great analogy.
Touching on a couple points in the video, I appreciated his philosophic and thoughtful demeanor, which i think is represented well by how he emphasized reading and journaling. When I was younger I thought running fast was just a matter of training hard. Flipping his point around about heath (running) making you better in other areas of life like your job, I think the opposite ia also true. To perform at your highest level in running, whatever that may be, you also need to strengthen all areas of life. Improving mental health, having a strong aupport system of family and friends, dialing in nutrition, learning to appreciate your accomplishments not overly critisize shortcomings, etc. Being willing to educate yourself on topics like these and to reflect and learn from what you've done in the past will allow you to maximize your success.
Well done on getting Eliud on your show Floris, giving him those drawings from your children was a really nice touch mate!! Especially if he’s been under a lot of stress recently. Eliud is such a good ambassador as well as athlete, I hope to see him return to his rightful times again soon, even the greatest have their off days too!!
‘Running is where you are free’. I love how running makes me feel. I read a quote recently which says ‘Freedom is running wild over untamed land with no notion that any moment exists beyond the one you are living in.’ Huge respect and admiration for Eliud and what he brings to this world and thank you Floris for caring about our community and bringing us this interview.
"I believe everything starts with the family." - I really like this phrase and I interpret it with an open mind. There is a family of your choice for everybody out there apart from the family you're born in.
“The world is full of compliments and criticisms… The more you are calm, the more you can make nice decisions... if you are calm you can live in a good way, control what’s in your hand, and make your next move.” Absolute wisdom 👌
Thank you so much for this interview. Eliud is an inspiration as a runner and as a person. "Self confidence is like an umbrella. If it’s raining an umbrella can’t chase away rain but it can make you stand in that rain. Love this.
I love his simplicity, and he tells exactly what we know but most of us cannot accept. I feel like in today's world, we are all looking for an easier way to reach our goals but aren't really willing to put in the hard work. Thank you for the video
Thank you, Florian, for your enthusiasm and effort in conducting the interview. I appreciate the dedication you put into it. However, I wanted to provide some feedback that might help in future interviews. Questions like “Do you have any advice for young runners?” often lead to very general responses. Instead, diving deeper into specifics can provide much richer content. For example, if Eliud mentioned taking ice baths after marathons, you should follow up with questions about the exact routine, duration, temperature, and any additional details. This approach not only yields more informative answers but also engages the interviewee on a more detailed level. The goal is not necessarily to cover a wide range of topics on a superficial level. Sometimes, it’s much better to dive deep into a handful of topics. This allows for a more meaningful and engaging conversation. Additionally, the point is not to just ask prepared questions but to have a conversation. Being flexible and responsive to the interviewee’s answers will always lead to a more natural and insightful dialogue. Studying the basics of conducting interviews might be beneficial. There are numerous resources available that offer great insights into crafting conversations that elicit detailed and engaging responses from the quests. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing your future podcasts!
So much wisdom to reflect on in this interview but I think I would have to pick 'health is your wealth'. Fantastic interview, thank you Floris and Eliud!
"Running is where you are free. If you are not running you are in prison." This stopped me cold. It's so uplifting-and then stark. In prison! How many of us were brought up in a culture that tells us that *running* is prison? That it is tedious, boring, loathsome, punishing? We hated doing sprints in gym class as kids. But to discover low intensity running last year-in large part thanks to your channel, Floris-has been such a joy for me. When people ask about my training routine, I am saddened, and also have to quietly smile, when they shudder and declare that they hate running and could never do it. Give it a chance, folks! To hate and refuse to do that thing that we and our ancestors were born to do... *that* is the real prison, as Eliud said. Running is joyful. Running is freedom. Eliud is so wise, like a spiritual teacher. Thank you for the positivity you spread, Floris. 🙏🏃♂
@@FlorisGierman Cheers Floris! I owe you a lot for motivating me to start on this journey last August. About to start my first marathon training block for this Fall. Maybe I'll see you at one of the majors some day. Keep up the amazing work-on the pavement and on UA-cam!
Absolutely. Our Western lifestyle of convenience, luxury and comfort is not the natural human condition. Our genes, our evolution over hundreds of thousands of years tells us that we have to hustle, we have to move our bodies. Eliud is right and the Western model of comfort is wrong. As runners ourselves, we know this to be true! I appreciate your comment, thank you.
I just love his passion for what he does. Consistency, discipline. Health is wealth. These are all things that I try to teach by example to my students. What a wonderful coach! Thank you so much for this interview. It is a great reminder to me to keep going with my students anf help them dig deeper into their passions❤. On a more personal note, Im a mom of three. Ive been an on and off runner in my life, but a few months ago, I decided to run every single day. I am making the decision every day to run. When my kids are napping, I run on the treadmill. When I'm teaching, if im not on recess duty, I go out and run. After this, i am so much more inspired to make the decision to run every day. Just show up for yourself. I have found that even when Im tired, when I show up to run, I feel souch better because I decided to be consistent and disciplined. What a wonderful interview! Grateful I watched. Thank you!
"The more you are consistent, the more improvements will come very fast" I cannot agree more with this. I've been running on and off since 2014, not able to go under 1h42 on half. Then I had a cancer in 2020, and decided to be more consistant about running since my remission. Since then i went under 1hrs35 last year and I'm planning to do Edinbrugh half marathon at 1hrs25 this sunday :)
@@FlorisGierman Thanks, health is here and running helps a lot :) I've lived some very bad moments because of some gnarly chemo and post op sides effect so now sport is no longer painful but a way to feel more alive :) and thanks a lot for the great content you share with us !
One of my favorite takeaways was his statement, “It’s about making the decision to run, controlling your mind and maintaining discipline.” I woke up this morning at 3:30 and couldn’t fall back asleep. I had planned to run at 5:30. When 5:30 came around I was tired and unmotivated, but I made the decision. I laced up my shoes and made it out the door without entertaining my dissenting thoughts. It was a glorious morning and a productive day. So glad I ran!
I think what Eliud means consistency is discipline, it's the beginning, it's hard but you'll get there eventually. I've been running for just 5-6 years, habit is the number 1 factor for improvement. But to get there you first need discipline > routine > habit, at the beginning you will find every excuse not to go for a run, as your habit is formed you will find every excuse to go for a run. At that point you know you've succeeded. When habit has formed then you can play around with different training segments like base, intervals, tempo, etc. Thanks Floris, for sharing this interview with Eliud!
“Preparation and planning” that’s the success, that’s setting yourself for success. I love how lessons from running flow over to all of life’s other goals. Discipline and consistency are the motto for the rest of year in my running, studying, and career goals. Keeping a clear head and chin up will take one farther than they ever thought they could 🤞
I'm beginning to start running again, and I think that the key as Kipchige said is consistency. Results may take months even years to come, bit if you are consistent you will eventually reap the rewards.
The part about being calm and in control is so smart and simple, but still really hard. It’s so easy to make mistakes when being tired, hungry, frustrated or angry. To be able to take a step back, calm down and look at the problem from another perspective is so important
When he said "first you have to retreat..." I was surprised, but then I started to realize where he was going with it - to solve a problem you have to step back to analyze the situation first, then try another approach. Brilliant.
Health is Wealth. I work with active Military Members and see a huge difference in stress management abilities between those that are fit and those that are not. It inspired me to become a Certified Personal Trainer, in addition to, being a Mental Health Counselor. I can now better serve our nation’s Service Members more effectively.
Favorite lesson is journalling. Did this for my mental well-being but never thought of it for training. With this in mind, you can be more mindful of your body and how you are feeling with regards to recovery.
Flo, this is one of my favorite episodes to date. A conversation between two incredibly talented and special human beings sharing knowledge and inspiration about one of the coolest things to do: running! You both rock!
"Being consistent is what makes you run fast". So challenging to be consistent, but it is indeed a mindset. Always an inspiration from these greats @FlorisGierman @EliudKipchoge
What a wonderful interview between you both! Eliud is one of a kind, what a unique personality. There is so much passion in his eyes when he talks about running!!♥️✨
Well, where does one even begin? Thank you for sharing this conversation with a modern day philosopher, actually two philosophers. 🙌 The one thing that hit me, treat yourself as the best one, the best trained on the starting line. And that comes from preparation, the mindset, belief and the joy one finds in running. Love this episode ❤️ and can’t wait to see Eluid take to the trails for an ultra!
This is very valuable principles consistency, discipline, health is health. Eluid Kipchoge is one of the greats. Fantastic! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💕💕💕💕💕May he continue to be successful as a marathon great💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Thanks for the awesome interview. Subscribed. My favorite takeaway is the mantra that he consistently lives by - The more you are consistent, the more improvements will come very fast. As always, he is the GOAT for a reason, always calm & inspiring, and so humble.
Hi Floris! Thank you for a great interview! I loved what Eliud said about how running teaches you to be disciplined in what you're doing, to be consistent, to dedicate time in life, and how it helps you solve problems in your life. Personally I have experienced how running spills over to various aspects in my life and made me a better human being. So grateful to be able to run. Also VERY excited to hear Eliud considering running an ultra one day! :)
Great observations in your personal life as well. I've also noticed the massive impact running has on my work and family life. Can't wait to watch him run his first ultra!
Eliud will always be the GOAT on and off the race track. A true ambassador for the best things that running can provide to a persons life... physical and mental fitness. My favourite saying is "You are only as tall as the last mountain you climbed" and I think Eliud has reached one of the highest and hardest stages of his life... but I truely believe that he will have the mental strength and support from his family, friends and fans to push him to the top of "his" biggest mountain. P.S. I love the second drawing with mum sleeping on top of the mountain. 😅
Thank you for another great interview. Eliud really is a philosopher. I will really keep it in mind when I don't want to go out for a run or a run is hard, that it's ok, I just need to do it and to train my mind. I think the biggest thing for me to take, which is the hardest, is to treat yourself as the best.
It was an excellent interview, with some very good lessons. Thank you for allowing us to learn a little more about Kiphogue in person. congratulations. It was a great interview
This was so detailed, informative and very useful and helpful advice. So grateful to God Almighty, that I started my running journey 2020 and here proud Marathoner finisher of Dublin 2023 - 4:37:33, that was on my Birthday and London 2024 4:43:04. All was true brother Kipchoge said. Mine - consistency, patience, believe in yourself and never give up. My 5km as at 2020 was 40:47 and and these year 2024 25:30. Can wait always wish to break under 25. My next one to run marathon without stopping, I can run half marathon without stopping. Can't wait let's go. That is for Dublin Marathon 2024, can't wait 🫡🤗💪
What a massive improvement knocking 15 minutes off your 5k time. You must of lost tons of weight and gained massive fitness to do that. That's so awesome, please keep on going with consistency and self-confidence, as Mr. Kipchoge says.

I'd like to thank both of you for this interview - it's almost mind-blowing how wise Eliud is, not only in sports, but in other aspects of life.
Totally agree, his wisdom goes much beyond running. Glad you enjoyed this conversation.
Long distance running is great for the mind 💖

My favorite piece of advice was about consistency. It is better to be consistently good than occasionally great.

This stopped me cold. 🙏🏃♂
So well said, really happy to hear this. Thank you
@kentshultz6157 Enjoy your running journey
Thank you!
What a class act. The world needs more Kipchoge attitudes.
100% agree!
Great interview: One thing that stood by his interview is is to be disciplined and follow the program.
Health is wealth, my mom always said this.
Your mom is right!
Wow life can surely throw curveballs. Wishing you much health and enjoyment on your running journey!
@@FlorisGierman Thanks, health is here and running helps a lot :) I've lived some very bad moments because of some gnarly chemo and post op sides effect so now sport is no longer painful but a way to feel more alive :) and thanks a lot for the great content you share with us !
Thank you for sharing your story. Glad you made it through the cancer, and I hope you smash a new PB on Sunday!
@@brianmessemer2973 thanks a lot :)
@@brianmessemer2973 Thanks for your kind message :) Edinburgh half marathon update : 1hrs26 and 30sec, not the 1hrs25 but still very happy :)
Great interview! Thanks for the excellent job!!!!
Thanks so much, that means a lot!
My favourite bit is Eliud's focus on consistency. It's the best way for any athlete to reach the next level or the next goal.
Very well said Kayzie!
Thanks for the great video 🙂
"Self confidence is like an umbrella"
Love that!
“Preparation and planning” that’s the success, that’s setting yourself for success. I love how lessons from running flow over to all of life’s other goals. Discipline and consistency are the motto for the rest of year in my running, studying, and career goals. Keeping a clear head and chin up will take one farther than they ever thought they could 🤞
Spot on Karalo, these lessons do indeed apply much beyond running. Great takeaways right there!
My favorite lesson or quote from this video was "Treat challenges as opportunities.
I'm beginning to start running again, and I think that the key as Kipchige said is consistency. Results may take months even years to come, bit if you are consistent you will eventually reap the rewards.
Ok, that umbrella analogy hits really hard! It might have just become my favorite quote. Such a talented athlete and inspiring person!
This was really special. What a kind, soft spoken man who thinks about life and running. I feel so grateful to be a runner and part of the community.
Self confidence and consistency, I'll use that as my mantra this training cycle. ✌️
The part about being calm and in control is so smart and simple, but still really hard. It’s so easy to make mistakes when being tired, hungry, frustrated or angry. To be able to take a step back, calm down and look at the problem from another perspective is so important
Totally easier said than done, yet good reminders to focus on.
When he said "first you have to retreat..." I was surprised, but then I started to realize where he was going with it - to solve a problem you have to step back to analyze the situation first, then try another approach. Brilliant.
that the fun is most important thing in the end, also the peace in his voice
“Running is where you are free” can’t agree more with this
Health is Wealth. I work with active Military Members and see a huge difference in stress management abilities between those that are fit and those that are not. It inspired me to become a Certified Personal Trainer, in addition to, being a Mental Health Counselor. I can now better serve our nation’s Service Members more effectively.
Thank you so much for this podcast. Lots of love and respect from India 🇮🇳
Highly appreciated 🙏
Thanks for listening. Much love right back at you from Los Angeles.
Favorite lesson is journalling. Did this for my mental well-being but never thought of it for training. With this in mind, you can be more mindful of your body and how you are feeling with regards to recovery.
Great lesson! Journaling is such a powerful tool for training, racing and daily life.
Flo, this is one of my favorite episodes to date. A conversation between two incredibly talented and special human beings sharing knowledge and inspiration about one of the coolest things to do: running!
You both rock!
Awww thanks so much Demi. This was a special conversation to record. Love his perspective on training, racing and life.
Eliud is the oogway of marathon of running.. Wonderful person.. Cool and calm..
Great interview! I loved his analogy that confidence is like having an umbrella in the rain. the rain doesn't go away, but you can stand there in it.
Loved that analogy as well!
"Being consistent is what makes you run fast". So challenging to be consistent, but it is indeed a mindset. Always an inspiration from these greats @FlorisGierman @EliudKipchoge
Even short workouts can help with gaining momentum in consistency.
Although I do not agree 100% with what Kipchoge said, this is one of the best interview I have ever watched.
What a wonderful interview between you both! Eliud is one of a kind, what a unique personality. There is so much passion in his eyes when he talks about running!!♥️✨
Absolutely, so glad you enjoyed it. Love his unique perspective and humble personality.
Consistency, Discipline and Dedication. Great video 👍
Spot on right there @Remanchim1748
Thank you Floris for this interview. Really appreciated.
Thanks for listening, really appreciate you! @boyat437
If I’m going to learn anything from running, learn from the GOAT Eliud Kipchoge!!!👍
I love Eliud’s modesty and I appreciated his advice on consistency. Keep up!
Yes his voice sounds low ... but the way he projects his strength is beautiful .... ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉😇!! To confidence ... 💪🏻💪🏻🦋🦋... he is a winner any day !!
There are so many good lessons to learn here. He has reminded me to be consistent!
I loved the advice that it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t perform. Huge Coros fan here
This is very valuable principles consistency, discipline, health is health. Eluid Kipchoge is one of the greats. Fantastic! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💕💕💕💕💕May he continue to be successful as a marathon great💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
So inspirational. Family, consistency, those are key.
Thanks for the awesome interview. Subscribed. My favorite takeaway is the mantra that he consistently lives by - The more you are consistent, the more improvements will come very fast. As always, he is the GOAT for a reason, always calm & inspiring, and so humble.
Great takeaways right there and YES, he surely is the GOAT, love how humble and calm he is. Thanks for your support!
Thank you so much for the interview. Eliud is such an inspiration and a fantastic family man . I really enjoyed the conversation.
Eliud truly is an inspiration to many.
Hello, I enjoyed the link he made between a balanced and healthy life and running. Running is helping people being a better person in life. Thank you!
I’ve been binging your video and grateful for these podcasts
Happy to hear that. More to follow!
Great interview, Eliud is not only an excellent athlete but also a very good person, his advice is good for both sport and life.
Thank you for your obvious care of Kipchoge's mental state which you described at the end of the video.
It was very humanic from you to talk to him like that. Thanks for all. And he has amazingly calm voice. Love him.
Thanks for quotes at the end.
Appreciate that Tomas, thank you!
Very beautiful conversation. I'm a huge fan of Eliud Kipchoge. Thank you Floris.
The GOAT 🙌🏼
Good luck trying to keep your camera in focus if he runs an ultra one day Billy :)
Kipchoge is arguably the most underrated athlete in the world right now
Floris
Enjoyed this interview with the great kipchoge. Your summary was beautiful . Great job and look forward to more talks on running
hahaha yeh mum was excited for the trail nap there 😅
AMAZING!! Thank you so much for this incredible art work and conversation put into light!! 🌟
Consistency in anything makes results, even if it's a small step forward. Thanks for the interview
Spot on, surely applies to training, racing and life in a variety of ways.
Wow! You asked him some really good questions that other podcasters don't... I enjoyed and learnt a lot from this podcast.. 👍🙏👏
Tried to get out of any standard question / replies. Glad you enjoyed this conversation.
Thank you for another great interview. Eliud really is a philosopher. I will really keep it in mind when I don't want to go out for a run or a run is hard, that it's ok, I just need to do it and to train my mind. I think the biggest thing for me to take, which is the hardest, is to treat yourself as the best.
So well said!
It was an excellent interview, with some very good lessons. Thank you for allowing us to learn a little more about Kiphogue in person. congratulations. It was a great interview
Glad you enjoyed it Jose, that was a special conversation to record for sure.
Wow, well done on your running journey so far. Enjoy your Dublin Marathon Janet!
What a massive improvement knocking 15 minutes off your 5k time. You must of lost tons of weight and gained massive fitness to do that. That's so awesome, please keep on going with consistency and self-confidence, as Mr. Kipchoge says.
A wonderful interview. Many thanks for the thoughtful questions and the whole tone of the interview. So many life takaways❤
Glad you enjoyed it Danny! ❤
