Operation Paul Bunyan is the most relevant and accurate mission op title ever.
Yeah, but tFE forgot to mention the follow up, Operation Babe the Blue Ox.🤣
Operation Starvation was very on the nose as well
When I was in Iraq and 03 we went up to Fallujah to help get the Marines out. The army surrounded solution took over every suburb. The suburb we took over was the town called Ajax... Someone that has four thought they were clever and named the mission operation clean sweep.

After they cut it down, the commander of US forces in the South Korea had some of the wood turned into a swagger stick that he ceremonially gave to his replacement. Also, when the North Koreans showed up, those South Korean special forces guys with the claymore mines strapped to their chests went to the other side of the bridge of no return and screamed at them, daring them to cross while brandishing the detonators. ROK Black Berets are insane.
If that is true that fucking brilliant that men was like You can shoot us but it will be the end of your government.

I cannot express to you how crazy it is that one of the American soldiers who died was named Captain Bonifas when Saint Boniface is famous for having taken an axe to a pagan tree idol.
History is amazing.
Great, now I've got to look him up to.
He's the Christmas Tree Saint! He found people worshipping Thor's Thunder oak tree, got pissed, and chopped it down. A small fir tree grew from the oaks trunk. Wow! I didn't link the 2 til I read your comment! History is great and this is mind blowing how their names are connected
Crazy is right! Amen, Brother!
Let me get this straight...
St. Bonifas was upset that people were worshipping an oak tree, because it belonged to a Norse god. So, being petty, he chopped it down. Then a fir tree grew on the oak's stump. Did it somehow spontaneously sprout there? Did a seed blow in on a warm breeze? Did Thor put it there in an act of revenge? Now millions of people around the world worship a fir tree for a month every year, and that's not only ok, Bonifas gets assigned as the trees' patreon saint.
Is the fact that the tree is going to die, karma for the life of the oak tree? What about fake trees?
@@PsychoKittee1 Being petty had nothing to do with it.

I love how the South Korean special forces came armed for a battle, while the US special forces came armed for the apocalypse. It's very indicative of how the US military operates.
SK was ready for a small skirmish
US thought they were gonna restart the Korean war because of a single tree

It's a great story but the manhole cover doesn't hold the record anymore.
The Parker solar probe more than tripled the record as part of its mission to touch the sun. But, it does lose a few points because unlike the manhole cover, the probe was going that fast on purpose.

Talk softly and carry a big stick.
3:58 The original plan was to simply trim the tree’s branches to obtain visibility on checkpoint 3 not chop it down entirely. The plan changed however, with the US and South Korea deciding to chop down the tree instead in response to North Korea’s reaction and hostile response (that led to the Korean Axe Murders) to the tree being trimmed under the supervision of an overwhelming force.
Operation Paul Bunyan has to be the best "hold my beer" moment of the Korean conflict. The amount of money and manpower used in the operation to get rid of one tree is incredible!

And how our defensive budget is still more than doubles the budget of all other nato countries combined. 849 billion dollars spent last year for the military alone and you're saying we lost our military touch? Korean war history is quickly becoming the best part of this channel
The Korean War is often called the "Forgotten War". As it is rarely talked about. Technically, the war never ended. We just stopped shooting at each other. Though, North Korea keeps forgetting they are one step away from being defeated with air drop cans of Spam over settlements and villages. As they could be beaten by delivering food to the masses and not the leadership.
@@QardoIt's like Russo-Japanese war since technically the war didn't end too since there's no treaty signing off the end of the war.
@ardantop132na6 Well, being how Russia ran away and stopped fighting. At the time, the ruler of Russia was an Autocract. And would never stoop so low as to admit defeat to an uncivilized nation (Japan was seen as "uncivilized" by Western powers, and Russia thought of themselves as "Western" during that time). Plus, being the war was against an "uncivilized" nation. No, one counted as a war.
It's so good, only thing on par with it I've seen is Extra History's one on Admiral Yi, good watch if you like naval history

I started learning TKD in the late '80s from a retired US serviceman that spent a lot of time in South Korea. That man did not teach us a sport he taught us how to "end things".
Spent a year on the Peninsula, saw ROK personnel’s performance during exercises. They DO NOT play games or nice.
The difference between real TKD and Olympics (watered down) tkd think it’s the same with Judo too
I've had teachers like that too, cool huh?
Yup.
I learned karate, probably about the same time you started TKD, from a guy who spent years studying it in Okinawa. He also had a background as a LEO, so he was teaching appropriate use of force guidelines right along side practical combative technique _(including "the best defense is don't be there")._ Took the time to break down the biomechanics of everything, too, so we knew why every motion was there and what it's supposed to accomplish.
There's a huge difference between the versions taught at your typical "tournament style" McDojos and the OG combative systems, regardless of which martial art you study, plus having a much lower bar for advancement so they can keep getting that money for lessons.
@@Channel-23s don't forget Karate, a deadly and effective fighting style where 3 of their students sent to Thailand to fight and 2 won in the 80's

I've a black belt in Tae Kwon do growing up and once we had someone who came to visit San Diego to look after his nephew. Well I was there practicing, and he stepped up and said that he'd like to give me some pointers because I was early for class and I was struggling with my form (there are 9 black belts available. When you reach 1st degree, you are considered a grandmaster, if memory serves). We practiced together for about 30 minutes and I was amazed by how solid and flawless he made it look. I felt like an absolute newbie under this guy, but I gave it my best. at the end, he shook my hand and smiled. His nephew later told me he was a black beret, and he NEVER smiled, not even at home.
Edit: 1st degree is newbie, 9th degree is grandmaster. left the original comment intact.

My Dad was an MP in Korea just after the end of the war. He had an incident where his troop hit a baseball over the line. It set off a moment where they had to go into one of those little trailers you saw during Trump's visit. They tried to negotiate getting the ball back but after some time they realized they weren't getting it back. My Dad reached across the line & snatched a pair of glasses off one of the Koreans that were there to negotiate. He uttered this in Korean “These now belong to the US Army” then walked away. I worked with an old (E4 Mafia) army vet who was stationed in South Korea when this went down. He said it sucked because he was moved from the motor pool to cleaning and preparing all the surplus M16s packed in cosmoline in case a war broke out then had to repack all of them when things cooled down. That man hated that damn tree!

I’m friends with a former SK special forces taekwondo instructor who now has a dojang here in Florida. Several years ago he brought a visiting friend from Korea over to use my range and shoot since that’s a bit difficult in Korea. Turns out the guy is top 10 worldwide taekwondo master and works for Kukkikwon, which is THE world body for taekwondo, and was here to evaluate high level people trying to advance their belt rank. He speaks 5 words of English, I speak 0 Korean, but he had such a good time that whenever he’s back in the southeast he comes over and we have a blast. He’s in his 70s, looks like his late 40s, and could wreck me in a heartbeat. Actual fighting taekwondo is no joke and they go hard in sparring and training.
I’d imagine the NK troops parked at the end of the bridge were extra nervous about venturing out onto it because that armored engineering vehicle (tank) was there for the sole purpose of bringing the bridge down if they fucked around, and that demolition cannon was already aimed right at a main structural column.
most underrated part of this xD I have a black belt in taekwondo from when I was a kid, and a black belt in hapkido as an adult. Even taught by a 8th degree grandmaster, I don't think I'd want to fight the kids over there let alone military grade xD. Although there's the misconception that a black belt means you have mastery when it really means you're a beginner.
We had a retired military guy who was a black belt who was messing around with our grandmaster. I saw the grin on our gms face and knew shit was about to go down, I saw him drop his stance slightly, and it was almost physics defying how quickly he kicked the military guy and knocked him on his ass. The most impressive part though was how he did that without hurting him, well not his pride anyways xD.
i achieved my 2nd Dan in the WTF (which is Kukkikwon) and it was hilarious when folks who got black belts at the schools in town would come into our school and get their asses handed ot them (respectfully of course) by green belts.
That's awesome. I had the honor of testing in front of grandmaster Minh kyo Han about 15 years ago. Same deal, the man spoke maybe 5 words of English, was almost 80 but looked like maybe mid 50s but just the nicest guy. His brother actually developed the red belt pattern for general Che and we still use it today. I love hearing stories about REAL Taekwon Do and the men who studied it.

You should be a history professor. I never liked it myself but when a teacher has this much knowledge on the topic and can present it in an entertaining way; it makes it stick with you forever.
I love how you get so far into the story you forget what it’s about and then it all circles back to the tree
So I am new to the channel but I think I have watched all your videos, and all the unsubscribe pods casts too. You have a timing, and delivery unmatched. Thanks for all the laughs.

While stationed in Seoul '85-'86, I took the JSA tour with a couple of my squad mates. This story figured prominently in the tour. A few years after that, I wrote a paper on the subject for one of my college classes.
Bro, when you were talking about Americans bringing axe handles and pistols, then bum rushed us with the information of all the support crew and vessels, i got goose bumps. You replied to a comment i made in a previous video that you "brought back the original vibe" to which you said: "and I'm gonna keep it"... but this was next level energy! You did Gerald Ford a solid! Thanks for making my day man. I wish we could be friends in real life.
💪😎🇺🇸
THANK YOU for making this video! I knew about this story but your way of telling it made it sooo much more entertaining. Probably the most ever spent on trimming a tree (would hate to see the logistics bill for the fuel alone, not to mention the maintenance) . And probably one of the biggest "Please fuck around so you can find out" blue balls moments.
This is the military version of “WILL YOU STOP TOUCHING ME!!!” on a car ride with your parents at age 4.
So...about a month or so ago I stumbled onto your channel and spent the next couple hours laughing my ass off. Somehow or another, "It's never a war crime the first time" and "Warheads on foreheads" became common utterances, so much so my girlfriend commented on it...
Then I saw the Doc episode and linked it to her by way of explanation. I spent six years as Doc to my Marines and can say for absolute certain that if I died, I died secure in the knowledge we were going to win.
I got a birthday coming up, and the girlfriend found the "It's never a war crime the first time" T-shirt after noticing the Doc reference I had missed, she ordered it and it arrived at my house today. I have a new favorite t-shirt.
I sincerely hope you do talk about Operation “Plumbob”. Absolutely hilarious. That manhole cover was on that camera for 2 frames before it was just gone. And nobody found it.
It either burned up of the atmosphere when it came down or went up or maybe it landed in patch of mud like those nukes in North Carolina and are now just apart of the earth
MINIMUM velocity estimates still place that manhole cover's speed at more than enough to escape into solar orbit.
With how things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if it strikes some Alien War Vessel, the Aliens go full CSI to find out who did it, and that's how our first interstellar war kicks off.
@@bluefalconssuck5881 Nah, man, you really underestimate how scary-big the numbers get when you start talking astronomical scales. Converted to freeway driving incidents, that manhole cover is basically somewhere between "damn that was a big bug" and "pea gravel kicked up by the car in front of you" in terms of severity. They either wouldn't notice it or would write it off as just another meteor impact incident.
@@Just_A_Dude
You're absolutly positively 183.597% correct... It's when they find VOYAGER and get pissed about being sent a math quiz, unasked for Mix-tape, and nudes that's going to kick the war off.
Condolences on the sense of humor graft not taking.
Nick you are by far the best story teller of all times. Thanks brother! Can’t wait for the next one.
I was in country on that day assigned to the unit I use as my avatar: 38th Air Defense Artillery Brigade.
I had duty the night before and was relieved around 0700 hours, went to eat breakfast, showered and then headed to the hooch in the village. When I awoke that afternoon my lady was making me something to eat and while I was clearing my head I made the mistake of turning on the radio. After the song that was playing was over the DJ made the announcement that all U.S. military personnel needed to return to their duty station. Well, so much for getting one of my favorite meals.
On the walk up to the gate I could feel the tension in the air. It felt the same way I remember it feeling during the Cuban Missiles Crisis when I was a young Army brat. When I made it to the gate there were a couple of wives on the phone trying to call their husbands and when they saw me they gave me the phone so I could call my section:
SGT L: Where are you?
Me: Front gate.
SGT L: We're having a muster, get in here now!
After I reported in and told to change into uniform, see my section OIC and I'm not saying what happened next.
It took about a month for things to start to return to normal.
What went from a simple/minor pruning of a tree almost became a war thanks to the outright stupidity of the North Koreans. Oh, every unit in the Pacific, Europe AND the U.S. was put on alert for this.
My mom saw what was happening in the news and called the Red Cross who in turn got ahold of me and I had to call her. I let her know I was doing alright, doing my job and until those 2 pull up in front of the house wearing uniforms I'm okay and when things quieted down I'd call back. She was an Army wife so she knew what I was saying. My dad had been retired a few years by this time and wasn't worried.
Salute to the families of the 2 fallen soldiers. I was ignorant of this tragedy till now. It's an honor to have you all in the country. God bless and keep safe.
Quack Bang Fatty! Love these insights!
This story is of the best examples of Fuck Around and Find out and the phrase "That escalted quickly" that exists. Also, the video about the yeeted manhole cover needs to happen because the situation is funny as hell.
I was in the Navy at the time and I well remember this incident. FYI - your wife's interruptions are welcome! Great video again. Keep them coming,
Takes a lot longer to watch one of these history lessons than you might think, I keep doubling back to replay bits I missed because of laughter.
America's definition of try me is always so beautiful
Good Old Fat Electrician teaching us more about the Korean War and adjacent conflicts in 2-3 sub 1 hour videos than the whole of the American education system
I would absolutely love to hear about the fastest manhole cover in history.
“In the helicopters above were 120 nineteen year old athletic alcoholics with machine guns…“
- some of the most comical and yet accurate parlay of words to describe the seriousness of the situation. Bravo! 😅
I'm fairly certain that that was not a tank, it was a CEV (Combat Engineer Vehicle) and the gun on the front is for punvhing holes through hardened bunkers and not for anti-tank missions. The gun fires a 165 mm round with is one of the largest land based round that was in the US inventory.
Gunner! HEP! Bunker!
On the way!
If it is only a 12 Bravo vehicle, it certainly looks based off of the Sheridan, the last air mobile, airborne capable tank the US had. The last light tank in the US inventory.
You know it's gonna be a banger when the title makes no sense before watching.
Facts lol
In Jan 1996 the first time I went to South Korea (three times total), I had to go on a tour of the DMZ. There was a small museum with the stump inside of plex-glass, about 4x4'. Also the south Korean soldiers standing half exposed at the edge of the building (1:56) are at the "R.O.K. Ready" position. The rubber mats under them, tells you how often the position is manned. Half way down the blue buildings is a concrete line, it represents the separation line of north and south within the DMZ. Inside the blue building my group was taken to was a table at the half way line inside the building. At one point the tour guide left us alone in the room. I will not confirm or deny, weather anyone walked to the north side of the table. We were told not too, by our tour guide before being left alone. From the picture (1:56) the museum would be to the left, if I remember correctly. On top of going to the DMZ unarmed, we had to be in our class A uniform. We were cold.
Heh.
Just like it's only a war crime the first time, it's only an international incident if you get caught.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find out that groups of recently arrived American grunts get left alone in that room all the time just so they can "maybe or maybe not" cross into North Korea.
I moved to Iowa from Alaska about 10 months ago. I’ll tell you right now… Yes, Scheels is the best sporting goods/outdoor store I’ve ever been to. Love that they’re a sponsor! As a new Iowa boy, it’s good to see you holding it down here!
William Cushing a navy officer during the civil war has to be the most interesting officer I’ve ever seen check him out!

Hey there bud, hope you're holding up ok. Loosing a pet is never easy. But the memories of it will never leave, I still think back to pets my family has lost, and it always puts a smile on my face. Many hugs to wherever you may be
my sympathies. It is never easy to loose a loyal companion.
Yes William Cushing is great!
A couple things i heard that were not included.
1. The nearby check points were renamed after the Americas that died.
2. One of the Americas didn't die right away, he was alive in a ditch, the North Korean then took turns beating him and hitting him with a axe they stole, until he died.
3. The North Koreans kept the axe and hang it in a near by checkpoint, like a war trophy.
Another a guy that was there told me legend is the ROK SOF unit was to take care of the PRK checkpoint across the bridge. When they breached the door, the first ROK soldier in had the two claymore strapped to his chest and plunger in outstretched arms. The checkpoint was unoccupied and there's no evidence to prove it happened yet none to disprove it happened.
The other is the two killed were chopped into pieces which he didn't get into.
Dude,
I love the comical way you present history. Your delivery is par excellence.
Your content is top tier. I’ve already watched every thing you put out, but now rewatching almost all of it & you have made my life so much more enjoyable with your takes/ comedy / style of delivery.
It’s so good that my wife has started to enjoy learning random weird stuff & more importantly enjoying learning about history with me thru your content! Thanks very much for what you do friend
10:01 "Also they brought a tank" Not going to lie I burst out laughing at that part. Of _course_ America would be the ones to bring a fucking tank to a knife fight.
And utility helicopters, attack copters, b52s, f4s, a carriers. Basically 1/16th of the airforce.
Imagine the south seeing this
Well.... since no war happened.... that tank probably was a virgin.
Outstanding video yet again. And...the manhole cover into space may not have really happened. You could do a video on the Titan II accident at McConnell AFB in 1978 or the time a nuclear bomber crashed because the crews' mattress caught fire and almost took out the forward listening post in Greenland.
They once dropped an atomic bomb on Abluquerque, NM. It didn't go off. And it wasn't intentional. Which is a whole 'noter category of "oops".
The manhole most probably vaporized before leaving the atmosphere. But on the outside chance it survived the atmosphere, it would have been going fast enough to escape earth entirely. So not just into space, but never coming back down either.
Please fill us in about the burning mattress incident. That's too hilarious not to ask about.
@@markfinley3703if memory serves me right, the same shit happen in NC.
@@UndefinedStasisyou're correct there's 3 incidents I know of NM NC and off the coast of Spain. None detonated because the way you detonate those particular bombs. Still insane that we accidently dropped 3 nuclear bombs on an oopsie. And that's just the more popular known ones.
I can watch these all day, you may want to look into being a professor cause you know how to keep people's attention.
I really appreciate your Korea videos. My grandfather served in Korea. He passed when I was young and I’ve always wondered what it was like. He never talked about it and threw all of his stuff away when he got home from the war. Medals, dog tags etc. I wish I could find out what all he did and had.
I have been to the DMZ, seen the place and heard the story but your presentation makes it awesome to hear again.
I was stationed at Kunsan AB, Korea when that happened. We had B-52's flying overhead, to bomb N.Korea further back into the stone age. It was pretty intense for about a month. Very nice video.
I did two tours at Kunsan! 8th CE Red Devils!
@@damonw2286 I also did 2 tours at Kunsan in CES 76-77 and 80-82 . The fighter pilots were at one time sitting 4 deep on the runway in the F-4's ready for take off. Nice too meet a fellow CES Red Devil. Stay Safe.
Every time I think we have found the most ridiculous thing to argue/start a war over, my expectations get completely blown away. I mean, this is right up there with the War of Jenkin's Ear!
12:05 "you interrupted my drinking for this so im gonna interrupt your heartbeat."
Hey man, I just wanna say that I only found your channel recently thanks to a friend, and not only do I love your method of storytelling, but it's also reignited my love of military history and the like and is all gives a good reason why our veterans deserve a lot of the respect I think they don't get enough of.
The DMZ tour in the 80's had this story, the flag battle story, the microphone battle story, the tour of the JSA barracks, the nearby tunnels tour, and more. Interesting place and a great way to get motivated about getting assigned to a camp or base in Korea.
So, I just recently found this content. I have proceeded to watch every video, some more than once. Appropriate, proportional...yeeting Volvos...it doesn't get much better than this.
I was there.. At Camp Stanton... Assigned to the 284th...attached to D Trp 4/7 Cav... RKSR was where all the choppers and grunts held in place so the political minds could decide what to do...
"It's average... OK?!" Dude your killing me!
And I will close by saying, this is the best show on YT!
Losing two guys for a tree is a tough pill to swallow, but a tree is better than nothing and way better than WW3 kicking off. I want to know more about those Korean Black Beret guys.
Would still really love to hear The Fat Electrician Rendition of The Battle of Castle Itter story.
I can only imagine how that magnificent tale would go.
"Ah yes that one time in WWII where Americans and Germans teamed up to kick Nazi ass."
5th of May, V day is just around the corner
1945 the Führer’s reign is at its end
Jenny at the gates, as the SS open fire
There´s no time to waste, the final battle has begun
After the downfall, a castle besieged
Facing the Nazis awaiting relief
Gangl and Lee and their men set the prisoners free
An it’s the end of the line of the final journey
Enemies leaving the past
And it’s American troops and the German army
Joining together at last
Better would count as the reunification of the Koreas under capitalism. Also, N Korea is way too weak to fight anyone else, and if it takes a fight to get it done, so be it
11:55 the start of one of the most badass "try something, I double dog dare you!" moments
73 years old. 12-year-old introduced to the Police Athletic Club for kids. Loved Boxing, and wrestling in school. 16 years after my driver's license, started Karate. Got a Brown belt, checked other types of martial arts out, and learned basic forms. Taught basics in the military. Stayed with Karate after serving. Till mover to Seattle area. Checked out other studios. Since Bruce Lee was big then. Joined a club Bruce trained with. Never met Bruce. This club had "full contact" fights on Fridays. Moved away. Then a friend wanted to check out fight night at a TAE KWON-DO club. That night rocked me on the fighter's moves. Joined that night. Spared with instructors, and awarded a Green belt. Met the owner; "MASTER, SOLOMON HAKTOK YUN". Korean special forces, Vietnam, the Korean President's bodyguard member. Many fools came into our club trying to cheap-shot him. All left hurt, embarrassed. My uncle Tom, a Marine who served in Korea, Frozen Chosen. He told us how "F" ing tough the Koreans were. Master Yun was the toughest man I ever met.
I would definitely love to hear about the fastest manhole cover to ever exist. Love your videos, keep'em coming!
I've honestly been waiting for the manhole story....one of my favorite "Oops, we just accidentally did something awesome" stories ever
Has he posted it? I’ve never heard of this incident
@@Brisinger62 not that I've seen.... Basis of the story is that, during atomic tests, someone did the math wrong and, during an underground blast, they launched a manhole cover into space lol
@@Brisinger62basically what the comment above me says, HOWEVER, the speed of the manhole was 125,000 MILES A SECOND.
I heard about this story from my uncle Dave. He enlisted in the Army in the early '70's as an MP and his first duty station was Korea. He was a big part of why I choose to enlist. No firearms in the JSA? Not a problem. Just send a six-and-a-half foot tall, corn-fed, walking wall, country boy from Iowa Prime (A.K.A. Nebraska.)
I suspect he was posted to the JSA, but I can no longer confirm... he passed two, going on three years ago. Buried in the hole in the family plot that could have been mine.
