- Thanks to all the great companies and people who get me to the races and keep my bikes and kit running sweet!
Also a big thanks to the SR Suntour and West Highland Wheelers (my local bike club at home) contingent from home who were there racing this weekend and helped me out massively with lifts between alpe d'huez & allemond and also brought some good spirits and laughs to our weekend racing! Big well done to Daniel Parfitt and Louise Ferguson who also both belong to the club getting 2nd place Cadet(Under 17) and 2nd place woman!

The Megavalanche really needs no introduction! It's been running for 27years and was the original Enduro/ All mountain MTB event.
I've raced several times before and have had a number of top 10 finished my previous best being 6th place. It's been a personal goal to podium at the race, and so I was delighted with 2nd place this year
I took it careful on the rocks and snow at the top, it was pretty treacherous. I wanted to be in the top 8 to 10 after the snow and actually found myself in about 14th but luckily in a fast train of riders who were catching the groups in front.
Another battle with my friend Olivier Bruwiere for second place pushed us both all the way to the finish and max heart rate at 200bpm!

The reason I'm swearing at 25:49 is because my right contact lense fell out of my eye into my goggles so i knew my vision was going to be a bit shitty for the rest of the race! Luckily its hard to see in the lower woods anyway so wasn't a total disaster!
I can relate. I never had one fall out but to only be able to see out of one eye can be tricky. I thought that is what you were saying but my hearing is starting to go.
I tried snowboarding with contacts, but they kept flipping out at speed , possibly the cold dries them.. . .
Prescription sunnies 😎 seem to work in all but driving snow .
So sad to see Megavalanche and Mountain of Hell with such a small amount of snow though...

Yeh its a shame! Hopefully they have a good winter this year and there will be good snow again next time.... Although i did well this year without so much snow so maybe it's better for me.... haha!

Drop my bacon sandwich! That Sir, (17.26) is a proper sneaky french line. Me and my mates were out there all week learning the lines but that came right out of the blue. And the drop onto the road, hahahaha I bet the three you passed thought it was brilliant too🤣. Great result, Liam. Well done.
Hahahaha! Yeh that line is a good one, It's hell of a bouldery and rubbley so it doesn't look that nice to ride and I probably wouldn't do it if I was already out front with no one to try and pass. I've done it in the past to overtake people too but I guess more people might start doing it now haha!
Maybe do a quick bike check video Liam, good to know what tyres, psi inserts, anything you changed specifically for the mega 😀
Thats a good idea! I will do exactly that. Generally make the tyres and suspension a bit harder and run a faster rolling tyre compared to other races! 27psi rear, 24psi front with no inserts! I'll make a little bike check video for sure!

Thank you! Yeh I put in a decent shift over the winter and this year so far. Fitness seems good and is paying off haha!

I've had a few folk mention it to me/ask if anyone could do it or if the other lads were annoyed. Was definitely fair game though, no one was annoyed and I reckon a few more folk will be onto the inside there next year haha!

even without kilians flat you would have been on the podium. insane run.. one time kilian sad on his video that he had seen four riders who might have been rivals, like lthe one who had just won la reunion, then one of the damians. and in la reunion damian desbrosses hat a problem with his bike. good run, good video.
Would have been super interresting to have your GPS / HR data on the video (garmin virb allow it) as it is pretty impressive to see you finished at 200 regarding your theorical max HR.
By the way i would also be interrested to see how you prepared (if you do) specificaly for this kind of race (MoH / Mega).

Yeh it would be really cool to get the HR data live on screen especially. A few people have said the same so I will look into it for sure. Not sure about image quality and reliability of the virb to film the race but could be good for those additions like you say.
I just prepare for these races in the same way as others but I think I need to do a little more snow riding in future to feel more comfortable with it and try to be up front from the start!
@@LiamMoynihan no need to use a garmin camera. Just use your gopro for filming, then upload it on garmin virb editing software in order to add data on your video (Import your GPX file from the race), export it and then use your usual editing video software if needed. I did it on my 2018 mega quali race run, you can have a look on my channel ;-)
well done lad's, brilliant riding skills shown by most riders learners get better thru time lol but cleaning camera lens now and again would help the viewers get a better view of the race in general. well done to all participants of this race.

That race for second was intense. I watched the winners video and saw Kilian but didn't realize what happened. I know the winner turned around and the four of you were there. You put put on the show. Great video. If that mountain was just a bit longer, you might have won. Or died of a heart attack. 200bpm is intense.
Yeh real intense battle! 2nd to 6th all pretty close. I just wanted to empty the tank and not give anything up after loosing 2nd place a few turns from the end the previous week at mountain of hell!
@@LiamMoynihan Mountain of hell was a good race too. My question is which race do you like better? Mountain of Hell seems to be a lot steeper terrain..

What is the prize money for winning the Megavalanche? I googled but couldn't find any info
Thank you! I was pleased with it for sure, just need to go one better next year now haha! The Megavalanche doesn't actually have direct prize money but for the top 5 overall they pay for us to go to Reunion Island in December to race there (and it's a bit like a big fun holiday) so thats quite cool. Most mountain bike races don't have much prize money. Anyone earning a living makes it from sponsors but it would be nice to see more p/
rize money for sure. Mountain of Hell one week earlier is 1000 for 1st then 700, 400, 200, 100
Congrats, even more impressive since (or it sounded like) you lost a contact lens about halfway through?
Yes!! I was doing a fair bit of cursing and swearing when it fell out, couldnt belive it. Luckily the wind noise covers up a lot of my swearing! It has happened to me before but only once or twice and not while racing, seems to be the super dry air that causes the issues..

Yeh Kilian got a puncture. Real shame for him but is part of the sport unfortunately, especially this style of racing. Steaming down rock gardens exhausted and on a line you've not seen before. I always try to ride carefully in spots I feel a puncture could happen but ultimately it can just be bad luck! I hope you're right that I can get the win in the next year or two!
are the organizers launching a drone there to see everything and so that no one cuts it off?
Normally it's a helicopter but there has been some environmental blow back for flying helicopters around just fora race so no helicopter this year. Generally everyone wears a Gopro on their helmet and if you see someone cheat you show the footage and they get disqualified.

Yeh I've always been able to hit really high Heart rates. Yeh I do a load of strength training too. Particularly from November to April. The strength stats are good! Haha
BTW I watch your racing videos when on the treadmill. Perfect for excitement and motivation. 🙏

Yeh staying mechanical free at this race is a big part of it! You have to be pretty switched on to avoid them... Exactly like what happened to me in 2021!

Haha, use Downhill casing tyres and try to be as smooth as possible.. Even then they can still happen though unfortunately!

Thanks, yeh was a good battle with the lads. Going inside the street sign was 100% fair and part of the course, any of the other boys could have done it if they had chosen too also. It was a bit of a horrible sharp compression to rejoin the road so wasn't super pleasant but got me past 3 people so was worth it in the end!
You shoulda wiped your camera lens CLEAN... that spot in the center ruined you're whole video... not worth watching because of that. :P
Yeh strangely enough I was preoccupied with trying to win a race haha! Maybe in future I will try to think of it but no guarantees!
The winner wins because of no camera sweeping and no editing or UA-cam skills. He only concentrates on the victory.
