- Merry Christmas from Trinity Dairy! Although we are having a brown Christmas, the season is still special. On the farm, it's time to open up the silo by the barn. Alan and Paul unload a couple of manure spreaders of icky silage with the Case 830 before we hit good silage. Alan discusses the repair of the International 1256. Lastly, we share some of the Christmas fun we had on the farm.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. I'm down in SE MN and on the drive home last night, during a rainstorm, we saw two frogs on the road. I'm just shocked by the weather. We should have a good snow pack. I guess the only good thing is we haven't had hard frost so the water is going into the ground and we need that to survive next year, especially if its gonna be dry again.

That silo silage game of skimming off the top is a lot like making authentic sauerkraut! Sauerkraut needs to have the top sealed against oxygen or it will mold. Plastic film or a grape leaf (which adds tannic acid) and weights to keep the pressure on it. Maybe experiment with tall buckets of fresh silage covered with plastic/wild grape or oak/maple leaves and weighted down with a rock to see if that saves a load of silage and the work of storing and removal; it would be super nice to have a plastic sheet with the unloader for a weight on top and save your backs and have more silage to feed.
