God, this channel is a lifesaver! One paradox of having a background in Linguistics I've found is that it can be frustrating dealing with language-learning resources that are not scientifically motivated. It's so great to find resources that are grounded!
I agree! I am bilingual and on my way to fluency in Spanish. That's my goal, as BIG a word that is. It's not all about 'Spanish input', I mean endless listening, I like speaking Spanish There has to be feedback and direction too! I like phonetcs, I like grammar. This is something you seldom get from other la online language courses that concentrate solely on listening, so recommendations are to listen for one year before attempting to speak. I'm getting on in years, I want to use what I know now.
You studied linguistics? That's gotta be helpful. I genuinely always thought I was dumb and couldn't learn anything, up until I studied how syntax and syntactic memory works. Honestly changed my world and I can learn anything now. Btw, that being said this channel really is incredible. All forms of comprehension are always available to you as needed, I love it.

Oye, estoy de acuerdo, los subtítulos son muy útiles para aprender idiomas. Pero no hay ninguna razón para insultar de manera pasiva-agresiva a Pablo Román / Dreaming Spanish. Su método es basado en la ciencia también aúnque no sea perfecto al 100%. Sin embargo, Dreaming Spanish es el mejor recurso para aprender el español que conozco. Se puede alcanzar un nivel intermedio casi únicamente a través de sus videos gratuitos en youtube. Además los videos para principiantes ya son muy comprensibles hasta que no se necesitan los subtítulos (no estoy diciendo que no servirían para nada, pero no son necesarios). De hecho, después de ver más o menos 90 minutos de videos de Dreaming Spanish por un mes, yo ya podía escuchar podcasts en español para intermedios. Creeme, antes nunca había estudiado este idioma. Así que es cierto que su método funciona perfectamente. Además yo nisiquiera pagué ni un Euro para aprender el español.
Absolutatmente correcto, he estado estudiando durante un ano y medio, y acabo de descrubrir esto. Me esta ayudando mucho. Los subtitulos deben estar en su idioma de destino, no en su idiomo nativo.
I noticed that last point yesterday... Finding "spanish language series" on Netflix that aren't labeled "soapy", "gritty" or "thriller" is quite the challenge. Nailed It México is the only family friendly one I've found.
It seemed to me that the logical order is reverse, i.e. first watch the video with bilingual subtitles, then with Spanish subtitles then without. And then watch & listen to it multiple times without subtitles.
Hi, Shadyacres. Thank you for commenting. Actually, there was a study that followed an order very similar to the one you describe. That order was quite successful vs. simply watching with target language subtitles several times. So, if it works for you, fantastic! My philosophy is simple: "It doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice." The order I follow myself (and that I recommend) was inspired by the Language Reactor user manual. It's also almost exactly the same as the order used by Ilys from the "Norwegian with Ilys" channel. The logic behind the order I suggest is to place a heavy emphasis on ear training, which is the weakest point for many students.
Why do you (and many others) urge listening sin subtítulos 1st in the sequence.? I have reasoned that for material that will be a bit above your current level, a familiarity with the content (like a familiar childhood fairy tale, or popular series, ie Friends that we already know well in our mother tongue)- such that if we were to familiarize ourselves with the content 1st (either thru reading the subtitles or transcript in order to get the mental images of the story or action into our minds first,) and then following up by listening in target language would be very helpful. So I'm curious about the rationale for listening 1st without text. Thx!
Hi! The reason is that when you first listen without text you don't have any preconceived ideas about how the text should sound. Spanish and English have completely different sound systems (believe me, not even something as simple as a B sound the same in English and Spanish), so a listen-first approach helps you to open your mind to perceive the sounds of Spanish as they really are, not as you think they might be. However, I'm not dogmatic. My motto is: "It doesn't matter if the cat is white or black, as long as it catches mice." If in your experience a different order works better for you, then by all means keep doing it.

There are some light Spanish series on Netflix. At the moment I'm watching Valeria and Soy Georgina, and I have seen some comedies as well. Thanks for this video, I'm always in doubt whether I should use Spanish subtitles and miss some words, or use English subtitles. I'm not sure if I have the patience to watch an episode four times though ...
No todas las mentes somos iguales. En mi caso sí he adquirido los idiomas justamente como un niño lo ha adquirido, y me ha funcionado increíblemente bien como un niño lo hace. La única diferencia es que sí he visto al principio las películas o series utilizando los subtítulos en el idioma objetivo, cosa que los niños no hacen.
You are the best and easiest to understand Spanish teacher I have encountered. I'm learning so much more following your even pace with great subtitles. I have been doing Duolingo for 1 year and now with that base am really quite comfortable following your wonderful videos. Thanks for your well paced and clear videos.

But what effect does reading a language have without having acquired its sound system have? None of the studies you show talk about how this might influence the pronunciation of a learner and that’s the very reason why Dreaming Spanish doesn’t subtitle their videos. I’ve seen it myself with highly competent speakers of a second language who learned primarily through reading. Generally, their vocabulary is very ample, and they might speak with good word choice, etc. but their pronunciation of the language isn’t standard. It may not be too much of a problem for a native speaker of a European language who is learning another European language, but outside of that I think it’s better to wait before reading until the learner has acquired as much of the sounds, intonation patterns, etc. of their target language as possible through listening. If they aren’t interested in pronouncing the language very well, then your advice may be valid.
Hi! As you see in my main channel page, for beginners I start with phonetics, not with reading. I have published lots of videos on phonetics. The video you see here is not for beginners. One of my students has accumulated 600+ hours of Dreaming Spanish. My job now is to correct his pronunciation, because DS doesn't teach phonetics and he has developed bad habits I have to correct now.
@@spanishinput I’ve accumulated over a thousand hours of CI. My experience was that listening without reading and speaking was sufficient for developing very good pronunciation without needing to study phonetics at all.
Most people don’t follow the advice he gives, which is not to read or speak before giving oneself time to acquire the pronunciation of the language and minimize interference at the beginning.
@@spanishinput The Dreaming Spanish methodology recommends not speaking until 1000+ hours. Don't fault a student with 600+ hours or Dreaming Spanish for "bad habits" if the CI recommendation is not completed.

En contraste, en el cole no aprendí casi nada.
I have studied dozens of languages, checked hundreds of UA-cam channel for videos with languages, but this one is absolutely the best channel for learners of Spanish, and also the best language teaching channel I have found so far.

Thanks for commenting! For Netflix I would use Language Reactor or GlotDojo. The cycle of no subs/with subs is much shorter this way.
