You ARE such and encouragement! I wish I had followed you sooner. I'm 63, and finally planting my first garden. I purchased plants a month ago, and waited for my husband to fix the tiller and till. So I am starting late, and discovering that I bought too many plants, cauliflower and broccoli. Tomatoes and spinach just a few. I didn't know how much I would need. LOL. I am overwhelmed. I know the work is going to be hard, and I really wanted raised beds. Oh well. Thank you for showing your beautiful fruitful farm! I love your smile.
Just plant it all anyway, buy or find some pots. I found some for free today at Lowe’s. People bring them back in to share with others. You can plant spinach ,kale , Swiss chard. All kinds of stuff in 1 gallon pots
In response to your subscribers post: Debra, I took care of my mother with Dementia right up until the minute she passed. Gardening with her was so therapeutic for her all the way to the end. Keep your chin up, you may me wishing this time would be over. It is so hard to do all the things you need to for your mom,and difficult to see your mother go through this, one day you will realize how rewarding it is to know that every day you were her sunshine and gave her such happy moments right to the end. For such a time as this allow yourself to let her happiness be your only focus and you will be rewarded with comfort in that along the hard road ahead. Gardening can make dementia patients so relaxed, enjoy that with your mom.
I think a nice sign idea would be a "weekly favourite" theme where you draw some attention to something that is really shining that week or whatever is bringing you a lot of joy!
Since your critters got in the garden, you can put...."Compost happens" 😂😂 **To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow **Now entering the seedy part of town **this weeks forcast: 0% housework 100% garden work
For the sign I’d love to see a quote from Albus Dumbledor, “happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light” 😊 I love that saying.
I’m such a fan Jessica. I’ve decided that your garden tours are so awesome, because you make them so. Over the past two years of our virtual friendship, I realized that you actually dress up for our tours! You give it thought, and time, and preparation, and it shows. You always look so lovely like a friend excited to have tea and “take a turn” in the garden with me. Thank you!!!!
That could be a saying for the board..."Take a turn in the garden with me"...or perhaps the less formal sounding "Come walk through the garden with me." Or the shortened "Come Walk with Me". Sounds so welcoming and inviting and fun.
Karen, that is exactly what I thought. When my daughters come to visit, they always want to see my garden as well! It is always amazing to find people on the internet having similiar thoughts at the same moment.
Karen M “take a turn in the garden” came from the scene in Pride and Prejudice where the nasty old lady say “I noticed a prettish sort of wilderness over there. will you take a turn in it with me?” (I could quote the whole scene...but I digress. 😂)
I like the sayings, “Every flower must grow through dirt”, “Let’s root for each other”, “Happiness blooms from within”, “Beautiful things take time”, “Bloom baby bloom!”, and “Bloom where you are planted”.
I really, really like the term "volunteers" when it comes to gardening. I always imagine a little counsel of plants sitting down discussing battle plans for next year just like "Attention garden members, the call to duty has been issued. Who shall answer?" And a little tomato or merigold responding like *raises leaf* "Me! I volunteer for this task." Hahaha that also sounds like a great childrens book btw 😅😋
So cute! Do you mind if I take that idea and write a children's book with it? I'm just imagining a tiny plantlet trying to shove his seed cap out of his eyes as he eagerly waves his other leaf hand..
Boy the goats did a number on the garden this year! Happy time off Jess. We miss your face and love that you are taking care of yourself and soaking up this special time of transition for your family.
“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow” Audrey Hepburn. I like this quote because for me gardening is such a grounding thing that inspires in me hope for a brighter, more beautiful tomorrow.
“Shine Your Light” because you are helping us ALL shine our lights! Before finding your channel I was truly struggling to do that. I take care of my Mom who has dementia and is non ambulatory. You Jess, helped me pull myself up into the sunlight kind of like a perennial in the Spring! ♥️🙏🤓 Happy Mother’s Day!!
Twine is good too for tomato plants, but I have to check it bought once a week. Tie it a little loose & you can cut it off & retired it. Cheap way...gotta save
A saying FROM YOU that has stuck with me for so long is “make your waiting room a classroom” ♥️ I don’t have the means right now to have the kind of garden you do, but I make an effort to learn something new each season and grow in the capacity that I can
"Find yourself in the Garden." "Blessings of Bounty and May Your Gardens and your Life always Bring You Joy,Inspiration and Abundance!"(obviously my personal favorite!)😊💖
I have been refreshing the page every 5 minutes because I know the garden tour was coming up and I was sooo excited for it. Jess you make my day whenever you upload a video. Love and Blessings to you and your family x
I watch your videos every week. I actually go back and watch old ones too. I like that you are a mother of many children as I am too and that you love animals and gardening. I’ve learned and am learning everyday in my garden. My youngest daughter 12 years is learning along with me as she helps me in the yard and our garden and farm. We live on a sheep farm in Greece and it’s so amazing watching things grow here. I am a Christian and I love how you end each video with I bless you
I gotta tell you I just adore your channel and how "real" it is. I do love to watch other gardening channels where you see perfection most of the time but I think I/we also need to see the every day trials and tribulations. There is a lot more and a whole life story I could post here but the short version is for me to say thanks for reminding us that there's always next year 😊🥰
I watch Ryan Hall also. I live in Washington on the west coast, but my son and family moved to northwest of Nashville in Springfield. Being from the west coast, we've never experienced tornadoes. It's so scary. I have been praying for you and the gal from simply and lace and the other people I watch daily on UA-cam. Lord be with you all and protect you and your families ❤
"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants." Is my favorite quote to live by! And is so fitting for a garden space. It's the simplest description of a healthy diet by my favorite food author, Michael Pollan :)
A local nursery had "I wet my plants!" on their billboard. My late planting start had me thinking that "I got caught with my plants down." And every time you say Thorin Oakenshield I crack up. I'm so thankful for such a chilly spring. We moved cross country and changed hardiness zones, and settled into our new home when we should have been planting. So this chilly spring allowed me to get plants in the ground a little later than suggested for zone 8a. Coming from zone 6 I cannot tell you how excited I am to have a second chance to grow more in the late summer. Thank you for sharing what you've learned so we can learn too!
The way I always describe how a rutabaga tastes is by saying a potato and beet had a baby. They are incredibly DELICIOUS. Thank you for sharing your beautiful space with us!
OH MY GOODNESS! I have raised 3 cattle panel trellises ALL BY MYSELF! 69 year old widow! My dad was an engineer and he just always figured out how to do things by himself. He passed almost 10 years ago and I have felt him being beside me through this whole process. What worked? 2 ratchet straps! I feel so powerful!
Verla Davis, you go, girl! Good for you! Where there's a will, there's a way, right? Have fun watching plants climb up them and may your garden be fantastic!🌻
‘Sow, grow, eat, repeat’. Thanks for an incredible channel, your positivity, creativity and passion is contagious and inspiring. Your balance of mom, wife and life is incredible...you are a wonderful teacher and have made my own excitement for planting a garden (actually 2) blossom this year (pun intended). Thank you.
Hi Jess yet another lovely tour. I have just started a 10 day holiday from my job as a veterinary nurse. So I’ll be spending a lot of this time on my plot. I’d love to email you photos when I’m finished. But I’ll see. Please can you write on the chalk board greetings Harrogate or North Yorkshire which is where I live in the uk. I loved the way you described the other day about finding a space you love and want to drink your coffee. Now I only drink tea being from Yorkshire but I’m creating a wildflower row on my plot with raised beds of veg and little paths with little nooks here and there and it makes me so happy. I love your garden and admire what you’ve achieved. Love 🇬🇧 xx
This is my first year gardening, not sure how I found you but Im so glad I did, I’ve been watching all your videos and am hooked. Your videos have been so helpful. Thank you.
You posting this conversation today was a balm to my very sad heart. I sat outside in my garden and cried for an hour yesterday because I lost everything. There is some I can replant but most everything is completely gone. Thank you for being candid with your garden loss.
Today is Mother's Day here in Australia. So I'm all rugged up (while my youngest baby naps) with a hot cuppa, a gardening mag and Jess' garden tour. Total bliss 🙌♥️
I have had success digging up sunflowers that I didn't want to thin and moving them to another area. Try that to replace your lost sunflowers rather than thinning the big sunflower patch!
"We rise again" - Watching you from Nova Scotia where we just had the worst mass shooting in Canadian history. Trying to find a positive outlook through everything that's going on, and a way to still be proud of where I'm from. This is from a song by the Rankin family, a NS band. Also just planted my first real garden in my first home, and the act of relying on myself in that way is so empowering. You have made all of this feel so approachable for me, so thank you. Nature is resilient, we are resilient ❤️
I happened across your channel and have been so thankful for finding you. I love your gardens! They are so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your piece of Eden. I look forward to learning something new each time I watch.
I would totally put “Bless Your Heart”❤️ Not only is it the most southern saying we have down here in the south, but it also represents your ending of every video with “We bless you”. So excited to see how your garden is going to look in full bloom!☺️
I made a banner for church when I was young that said “All the flowers of all the tomorrows, are in all the seeds of today!” My teachers loved it, and I think I won a prize.
My four year old told me in our garden a couple weeks ago “mommy, after this time- we will sprout!” We had been explaining why we can’t go out right now. So my suggestion is the wisdom of my youngin! “We will sprout!” On the board ❤️ bless yall
Grabbed my coffee and you’d had just uploaded - perfect! For the chalkboard: “Welcome to my paradise” because it is like a perfect escape a bit like eden! 😊
When I am feeling ill at ease (like today) spending time in the garden is my therapy session. So, with that in mind. Here is my suggestion" Garden Therapy in Session.
I love seeing and hearing your enthusiasm for your garden. I too look at my young garden and see promise and not just dirt. And I am amazed at every step from planting to harvesting. I am in 5a so I have to impatiently wait to plant my tomatoes, peppers and summer squash. I get overly anxious when I see your garden bearing fruit before I even plant mine.
Whisper Joy,! Unfortunately, we lost our oldest daughter of two (3) yrs ago at 20 yrs old. Olivia Brodt, after almost a year of grueling treatments...cancer won. “Whisper Joy” was her tumbler nickname, she was also an artist and a photographer. Your videos have comforted as well as inspired us to keep going and get excited over trying new things again.Thank you.
Jess, I had a great idea since your garden is laid out long rows throughout your property, what about having like a post that would have a sign on it and you could put the names of everyone in your family and have like Jess Lane or Maya Boulevard as well as your children and even if you wanted since you’ll probably have more space you could have your kids pick names maybe for their favorite farm animal? I just thought it would be a great idea since if I ever had a nice property like you I’m a big gardener I would probably do something like that especially it would be easy to identify if you made garden notes that on Jess Lane your ex tomato plants were 6 feet high. Happy gardening I wish you and your family all the best!
My favorite saying.... "Live like today is your last day on earth". If you do this, you won't take things for granted and you won't let things bother you that ate insignificant in the grand scheme of things.
For your chalk board, I heard this today on WSB radio, so it's not mine, but seems appropriate. S.M.I.L.E. See Miracles in Life Everywhere...Watching your garden grow inspires so many of us. Thanks for sharing your life and journey. Happy Mama's Day tomorrow!!!!
Sign ideas: “spread smiles”, “grow light” :)) thank you for the reassurance with freezing. I lost 6 peppers last night during the frost in 6b here in northeast Pennsylvania
Thank you for sharing the whole process from the beginning, it's very exiting to see! These videos are like emotional support-time for caring gardeners! Today I was almost crying out of happiness while prepping my garden, and realized that for someone else it looks like clay dirt and poop and a lot of work. And thank you also for showing the temperature in Celsius!
"Taste and see the Lord is good!" For your sign : ) Here in Va I am now looking at the damage of the frost! I lost beans, melons, squash, and zucchini...but the ones I put straw on I think will pull through! Thankfully I have lots of seeds AND a long growing season! So staying positive and NOT giving up!
Idea for the chalk board. "Here WE grow!" with sunflower and a few other garden pretties drawn around the words. I have always felt the the garden grows us as much as we grow it. Also, where you're at your garden is about to explode with lushness before you blink. So, "Here WE grow" seems fitting to me. 😊
My grandparents raised tomatoes for a living back in the day....so dad was raised in growing tomatoes. He cut and tied about 1/4 inch wide rubber bands around tomato plants and stakes or fencing. Worked well.
For your chalk board. In my garden, I have a bunch of garden quotes laminated, taped on popsicle sticks, and sticking in the ground. For example: It is impossible to think anything but pleasant thoughts when eating a homegrown tomato. My latest: Happy plants! To go with The grocery dress . . . -Jessica Roots and Refuge Farm April 2020
Chalkboard..." Life Begins when you plant a garden " , " God water my garden " , " Only good bugs allowed in my garden " 😇🌈😁 Have you ever tried planting by moon phases? Lol, I have 1 cabbage that didn't bolt, so that 1 is going to love the temps here in TN tonight! My cousin taught me instead of dicing use kitchen scissors. Quicker! 😇 You just don't know how much I appreciate all your videos!!! I'm a daily watcher & it makes my day. Loving the windchimes in the background! You & sweet Miah have taught me so much! I BLESS all the Sowards! Love & HUGS & many thanks!!!
You are so inspirational! I'm so glad I found you and your channel. Where did you learn so much? Unfortunately here in Rankin, Ontario Canada we woke up to 1" of snow yesterday, UG. Enjoy Mother's day with your family and I hope part of it is in the garden.
And I would love to see... "OH HAPPY DAY" week "-----" on the chalkboard . Because whenever the Saturday walk through the gardens come up it's a happy day for me and it's uplifting and its faith-based
Chalk board Ideas: a song you're in love with or a line of scripture that was particularly striking to you during the past week. Or a secret youtube raid/shoutout for a smaller channel you'd like to support :)
You ARE such and encouragement! I wish I had followed you sooner. I'm 63, and finally planting my first garden. I purchased plants a month ago, and waited for my husband to fix the tiller and till. “And into the Garden I go...to lose my mind and find my soul.” ~John Muir
I also like “Spring is here! I’m so excited I wet my plants!” 🤣🤣🤣
I love John Muir quotes, this one is one of the best!!
I like this, but I thought John Muir's actual quote was into the forest I go, not the garden. But I do like this.
Amen & God Bless!🌈
I am going to make a sign of this to hang on my garden gate!!
I think a nice sign idea would be a "weekly favourite" theme where you draw some attention to something that is really shining that week or whatever is bringing you a lot of joy!
“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”
― Cicero
Laura Kinkade that’s the quote on my Facebook! I’ve been in love with it since early highschool
Love this...so true
The kiss of the sun for pardon. The song of the birds for mirth. One is nearer Gods heart in a garden, than anywhere else on earth.
Since your critters got in the garden, you can put...."Compost happens" 😂😂
**To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow

**this weeks forcast: 0% housework 100% garden work
Cute
Lol, Great ideas!😂
For the sign I’d love to see a quote from Albus Dumbledor, “happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light” 😊 I love that saying.
Oh some of my most favorite tidbits are Dumbledore quotes!
Roots and Refuge Farm same!!! I love Harry Potter!
Love this too!
I’m such a fan Jessica. I’ve decided that your garden tours are so awesome, because you make them so. Over the past two years of our virtual friendship, I realized that you actually dress up for our tours! You give it thought, and time, and preparation, and it shows. Thank you for noticing ♥️
It really does feel like having friends over to my garden ♥️

I really, really like the term "volunteers" when it comes to gardening. I always imagine a little counsel of plants sitting down discussing battle plans for next year just like "Attention garden members, the call to duty has been issued. Who shall answer?" Sounds like a great children’s book!

"I bless you" should go on the board

I love this one Jess
Love this saying!!!!

I'm going to have to use this one! I love it:)

Gardeners are the eternal optimists , every year we plant ,we even plant trees we will never see in full growth.
“You will be like a well watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail”
“Bloom where you are planted” has always been one of my favorite quotes.
For the sign: Deuteronomy 28:6
You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.♥️
SAYING FOR THE BOARD : Be a force of peace in a world of panic 🌱🌻
Noushka’s Kitchen & Garden Love it! 🥰
My Grandmother and Mother use to say, "if you Love Life, Life will Love You Back." I shall never forget this...🌻🐝💚 For the Board...💜
i like the saying "Today is just a trial run for tomorrow."
“Shine Your Light” because you are helping us ALL shine our lights! Before finding your channel I was truly struggling to do that. I take care of my Mom who has dementia and is non ambulatory.
You Jess, helped me pull myself up into the sunlight kind of like a perennial in the Spring! ♥️🙏🤓

Debra Bjornsen - Bless you for taking care of her.
Good for you realizing you gotta take care of yourself to take good care of your Mom.
Awe Debra, that touched my heart & soul! I too took care of my Mom. Happy Mothers Day!!! God bless you sweetie!

Jules A Hello from West Yorkshire 👋 You’re going to need a good cuppa to keep you warm next week as temps drop .
"Grow where you are planted" this is my go to saying right now.💕 you make me so excited to get my plants in the ground.
My husband just built me a rose arbor in my garden because I am so enchanted with yours!!
What a wonderful man! ❤🙏
Mine gets added next year because I feel in love with yours!! Thank you Jess, may God bless you with an abundant harvest!!

Happy early Mother’s Day Jess. You’re an amazing mother!
I love the laying on of hands and blessing the wee plantlings to live!!!
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris Bueller 😆
The seeds of the Nasturtium are great to pickle, like capers!!
This was a wonderful garden tour Jess! When the video was over i just closed my eyes and listend to Daniels sweet music ❤️ Love from Sweden
So soothing to listen to.
Also: Happy Mother's day all Momma's out there! Doing a fine job!
I watch your channel and get so excited. I look outside and ....it's snowing ❄️ life in Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 lol 😂
“To plant a garden, is to believe in tomorrow!” Love this one.❤️
Sign ideas: “spread smiles”, “grow light” :)) thank you for the reassurance with freezing. I lost 6 peppers last night during the frost in 6b here in northeast Pennsylvania
Same in NE Ohio :(
Thank you for sharing the whole process from the beginning, it's very exiting to see!
@Juniper Grace Yes, here on the farm we say "Walk on" Thank you! Happy Harvest!!
When I saw what time it was I rushed over! I'm a new subscriber and I've been loving your videos! 🌻
"Sow the crop to reap the reward." That would be nice on the chalkboard sign. Loved the tour and your family and farm. God bless you all!
Carpe diem
I don't know if you've ever listened to Ram Dass speak, but "Be here now" is one of my favorite quotes.
What does the annoying pepper do? He gets ‘jalapeño’ face 😂😂
Put jokes on the board!
Megann Vialpando I laughed way to hard at this 🤣🤣🤣
Clearly you do not get the joke, has nothing to do with Jess’s beauty.
I like the saying “today is a good day for a good day” and “gardening feeds the soul.”
"One is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth"
When your garden is abundant and you feel a bit overwhelmed you can put my favorite saying on the board. “OMGRAVY”
Best wishes from Northern Ireland 🇬🇧 your video's are always brilliant 👍
God-bless you for all your videos rather inspirational, Especially with all the craziness going on
Thank you so much for being here! I have been binging your videos as I’m helping my garden grow! And thanks for leading us to Baker Creek seeds!
"Roll with the flow." I know you live by this quote, taking life as it comes. Love you guys. You have inspired me greatly. :)
Saying I love is: Don’t go through life, GROW through life! 🌹
That is a good one!
For example:
It is impossible to think
anything but pleasant thoughts
when eating
a homegrown tomato.
My latest:
Happy plants!
To go with
The grocery dress . . .

You should write,"Hey y'all" on the chalkboard and use it in your intro :D
As far as zinnia blight, soak the seeds in a peroxide and water mix prior to sowing. That should totally knock out any blight.
If you every have to fertilize on a Thursday you could write don't forget to turdilize on turdsday lol 😁
hahaha
It is 34° F in Rochester NY near Lake Ontario and there are snow squalls!!! I have major growing zone envy right now.
Caroline Bonner me too! I live just down the road from you in Medina. Can’t wait to plant!!!!
Lived there long years ago, but am in north Alabama. Temperatures running 60+ to 70 and 70+, soon to hit 80. I do like the longer growing time.
You are so inspirational! I'm so glad I found you and your channel. Where did you learn so much? Unfortunately here in Rankin, Ontario Canada we woke up to 1" of snow yesterday, UG. Enjoy Mother's day with your family and I hope part of it is in the garden.
Chalk board sign “give God the glory” 🧡🧡
And I would love to see... "OH HAPPY DAY" week "-----" on the chalkboard . Because whenever the Saturday walk through the gardens come up it's a happy day for me and it's uplifting and its faith-based
Chalk board Ideas: a song you're in love with or a line of scripture that was particularly striking to you during the past week. Or a secret youtube raid/shoutout for a smaller channel you'd like to support :)
When I saw the garden tour come up and that it was 50 minutes long I was so excited. I'd watch you and your passion all day every day Jess
