Hi Jess, I wish I could put into words and pictures the utter transformation listening to you has had on my life, but it would take too long and bore everyone. The words from your heart reached a spirit that had resigned to accepting that I could no longer garden. It woke that spirit up with a bolt of lightening. I told my husband in floods of tears that I was no longer accepting my limitations and foregoing my dreams. I went into my jungle of a garden the following day and just started doing the smallest of things, that was last October and today, this evening here in France, I sit on our veranda with our 2 little labrador pups and revel in the beauty & accomplishment of the ever growing beauty of our surroundings. We are truly blessed. I am so incredibly thankful to you, a complete stranger from across the water, for being you & for blessing people like me back into our gardens. Oh my , Jess, I planted half a bed from one of my SIX, yes, SIX, Super Soil bag beds from this winter!and I reseeded the bags!Looks like a Black seeded Simpson or Grand Rapids on the lettuce. The garden is transforming into such a gorgeous glorious space. I love that you allow us to share it with you weekly! The Lord certainly pushes the boundaries in His gardens, Why shouldn't we?This is my favorite tour so far this year! I forgot to mention that I tried your idea of roasting some of my radishes. I love to grow radishes (so fun, fast, and beautiful) but I don't like to eat them. That being said, when I heard you mention roasting them being a game changer, I thought I've got to give that a try and sure enough, can you say yum? Thanks for that tip. I'm sharing your tip with my friends who weren't too fond of radishes in the past. I think I'll have to plant more in the future just to give it to all the new radish lovers. ha ha Enjoy your day.
Roasted radishes are amazing!! They're even better as small roasted chips. My son loves them as a snack, and i love that he's eating healthy, local, and free snacks instead of processed, over-salted commercial snacks.
Yay more radish lovers! 😍😁 I also fry all radishes with butter (in a pan) that are too spicy for my taste. Best side ever and also, I'm not ever sad that my radishes turned out spicy 😁😋

I really agree with you saying that having a garden comes with a running 'to do' list. There is ALWAYS another perennial you want, something you want to try growing, a new method of growing. It's one of the reasons I love gardening - never a dull moment!

P.S. Here's a thought, in your raised bed by your garden sign, since that area is shaded by the sign that would be a good place for lettuce since it can take partial shade. Whatever plants & flowers that like a little shade, that would be the perfect spot!

Yes, this. This is why I garden. It teaches me so much about God's goodness and how he provides. Gardening has given me new eyes to look at the rest of life. There are so many little blessings that we will miss if we don't slow down and pay attention. And, gardening is so similar to the rest of it. Really we don't do much. We can't make the seed germinate and continue to grow ...only make the conditions ideal for growth. I may also be in danger of being "too romantic" like Jess. 😂

You are a big garden influence and I am SO GLAD to hear you tell people to break the rules. So many experienced gardeners tell people "you can't" and 99% of the time you actually CAN. And I think "can't" stops a lot of people from trying.
Thank you for being transparent and showing even when things go wrong. It helps us know we are not failures but learn from our mistakes. When you watch someone that never runs into problems it makes you wonder.

I would recommend growing quinoa sometime in the future. It takes a good amount of space but is pretty low maintenance. Considering the distance most grains have to travel to make it to our dinner plate, I would say it's worth it. Fruition Seeds sells really beautiful rainbow quinoa seeds. I'm a big fan of growing something interesting, and seeing quinoa stalks growing in someones backyard is definitely interesting! Also, learning to grow some sort of grain can be really rewarding and help you gain self-sufficiency in the long run.
Hi Jess, clematis plants don't like their roots to get overheated. My Dad and then myself have always put a bunch of stones around the base and kept them watered well and they've done really well year after year.
Saying is "Hot face, cold feet" - that how Clematis like to grow. Their faces love the sun, but you have to keep their shallow roots shaded. I don't know how w/ a young tender Clematis would do w/ rocks piled on top of it (never tried it myself), but I do know they will have to try to push back up through it in the Spring. We always just plant a really nice groundcover of some kind (one that can also handle the heat/sun) under all of our Clematis's.
Maybe you can put some herbs under clematis or other perennial. I have clematis behind short bushes, climbing up with a rose, behind a peony, mums, phlox, sedum . it does not like sun on bottom of plant but loves sun on top. Im in Pa. we had a lot of rain this week. Now my green, yellow, & spaghetti squash have powdery mildew. It then spread to cucumbers, cantaloupe snd watermelon. I cut out bad leaves but i was afraid to use fungicide. Hope little melons snd cucumbers keep growing. Squash looked good before mildew but only had male flowers! Thanks for letting us know about neem oil. I tried a spray of hydrogen peroxide / water. This is my first vegetable garden ( i have a big flower garden)and i’m growing it on my deck in pots. Everything was great until this week.My mom could grow anything but i don’t remember her doing any cutting of leaves unless it was to eat it. Maybe i was focused on tying tomato plants and weeding and i didn’t notice. I enjoyed watching your kitchen videos. Felt like i was there with you. Feel bad that you spend your quiet kitchen time talking to us but we really appreciate it. We used to do canning as a family but i did everything but boil jars and seal them. I stopped when my mom passed. She grew the biggest, best tasting tomatoes so her jarred tomatoes with basil were delicious! I wish i had a video of those times- picking vegetables, eating them fresh, and jarring them. I hated that my friends were doing fun things and i had all these chores but they are my favorite memories now. I don’t know how you do it with all your children! Wishing you much happiness! I have learned so much is such a short time from watching your videos. The last few years I have been working a small back yard garden. Last fall we bought 30 acres and this year I am learning how to grow a ton of different produce. Long in ground rows but I am mixing up the plants for better health. Oh my gosh, your garden is a dream!! I've grown up in TX, just south of DFW in the county below, where it was once a lot more country. We had 8 acres with animals and my parents would let me have a garden area. My grandparents lived on the land too and we had all kinds of fruit trees. We sometimes did a veggie garden but my Pa got cancer and no time then. I use to go to Louisiana and help pick my aunt and uncle's garden in the summers as a kid and it was several acres worth. Now, I live in a duplex with my husband and don't have our own land there's several acres between us and the church behind us. My neighbor is a member and I asked if we could do a garden behind our area. The pastor came and disked us 60 ft of garden. This is my 2nd year and I've learned so much from your page. I found your page last year and it's been so helpful! You do a great job explaining but yet still laid back and country. It's relaxing. Thank you!
This is so fun! I'm in very north Virginia, near West Virginia, and you're definitely in a warmer climate. However, as I watch this garden tour, I'm processing the last of my chards. Because of the very late frosts, last week I just planted all of my summer seeds and seedlings. Thanks for the tour!
Try some New Zealand spinach, it loves the heat, won’t bolt and can be used raw in salads or cooked. The more you pinch off the tips the more it spreads. It’s not gritty like real spinach. We love it and you might also.
RE: Lettuce seed -- I like to cover the lettuce flowers with old nylon stockings so that I can catch most of those tiny lettuce seeds. I have also let a few of my Baker Creek Rocky Top and Red Wing Salad mixes go to seed. I love the ruffled, frilly one, too!
My daughter messaged me around noon today that she wanted to call me to talk and I told her that she had to make it quick because your garden tour was due to hit UA-cam. We talked for about an hour, so I am not sure when you actually posted, but this is a testament to how much I look forward to these garden tours. I love my daughter so much that I moved 1000 miles to be close to her, but dang it, it's Saturday! LOL! I can't wait for the ones where you're harvesting all the goodies. These are also wonderful to watch in the dead of winter when all we have are seeds and the dreams of gardens to come.

I think one of the big things of gardening is flexibility. I love that you experiment with things that people say "don't grow next to...", I do the same thing.I had a master gardener freak out on me last summer because I wasn't following the "rules" LOL! This spring is allot different as last spring we went straight to Summer..it was hot fast. It just gives time to enjoy cooler plants, but my pepper plants aren't happy.
Every time I see you drinking coffee from a beautiful mug, I think to myself, dang I really want a special mug or two to drink my coffee and tea from. Just makes coffee time that more special.
I have been so blessed by your garden tours and have started gardening again. Can’t wait to see your video on what to do with basil. I love growing it but just put it in like two dishes. My dad had a green thumb and taught me to grow in a desert (Palm Spring CA) where it would get to 110 in the summer. He could grow anything from corn to watermelon. He passed away five years ago last March and I have such lovely memories of working with him in the garden. After years of not growing anything I have struggled the last two years now in a humid 8b climate (the Texas Hill Country) having to adjust and learn new ways. Hey, Jess... How about giving Amaranth a try for SOME of your open space. It is great for breakfast cereal, but makes a great chicken coating mix. Good on you for adding corn. Don't you just LOVE how helpful the gardening community can be? 😊 Last four days, Olympia has had temps in the upper 70's and lower 80,s. I pushed like the dickens to get all my seedlings transplanted because rain was predicted for this weekend. Last night, the forcast changed a bit -- for the worse! This morning, we woke up to 58 degrees, thunder, lightening, rain, and even a little hail! 😳 Ugh! Same here -- first time growing Roselle this year! Growing more onions this year than I have ever grown in the past: Ailsa Craig, Globo, Weathersfield Red, Evergreen Hardy, Walla Walla Sweet, and White Creole. -- not sure why I felt so compelled to grow more onions this year, but it almost seemed like there was an "urgency" to it... In this area, DO NOT leave your car unlocked during zucchini season. You are likely to find your car FILLED with zucchini! 🤣 This year's watermelon is a Turkish variety -- Cekirdegi Oyali. Never grew this one in the past, but look forward to seeing how it performs in the PNW. Potatoes this year are Yukon Gold and Ozette. Good luck to you with your garden and high tunnel! I've been chased out of my garden by the heat hear in Arizona, we had 111f yesterday and 109f today. My sweet potatoes and butternut squash have taken over my front garden 😊 last year I had great success with letting cilantro go to seed and it growing every where that I decided that I would let all my favorite greens go to seed and spread them around and let them come up when they are ready. I'll thin and eat the baby greens or transplant where needed. I got my first 2 cattle panels in last week, my grapes are starting to climb one of them and I need to move my boysenberries to the other one. So glad I found your channel and saw how you use them.

Cattle panel is the best trellis....lasts forever too! You can also just weave the tomato vine in and out of each square as it grows vertically to minimize the tomato green tape attachment/detachment/reattachment time :) Beautiful tomatoes! I do 12" spacing, as well. I've learned that I can plant the tomatoes right up against the trellises, even if tomatoes on other side of trellis (stagger 6"), assuming you have enough cubic footage of living, nutritious soil. This leaves space at front of bed for beneficials like basil, marigold, nasturtium, peppers, etc. Thanks for the videos, I've learned several new things! :)
I watched a video from Baker Creek where they said they plant squash later in the season, like June or July, because the squash bugs are pretty much gone by then. Not sure if that’s the case where you are. Lovely garden! Too much fun❤️🌱
How about Asparagus Jess? As an idea for your extra garden space. Or you could even get it established up in the cottage perennial garden area by the berries. I love asparagus!! I've never personally grown it myself because I forage for it instead... however i have always thought it be nice to have my own patch of it in my garden too.

Asparagus-My favorite food to grow because it takes so little and gives so much. Beautiful in the summer and provides some of my garden with shade from west sun when it is needed most. First to come out in spring and tells me it is time to get my onion sets and peas in the ground. Black eyed peas are great too because they attract pollinators and are nitrogen fixers.

Yay, I'm growing corn in a raised bed as well for the 1st time. I'm learning a lot growing it. It's windy here so I've run string around the outside and used some stakes in the beginning to support it. :)
I am always amazed by the amount of food that comes from seeds too. Such a blessing. I suggest trying out fried squash blossoms! Just stuff them with cheese or chicken and cheese, or even a delicious roasted pepper with cheese and chicken, whatever! And add salt only, because the flowers are spicy enough that you don't need to add pepper. And then batter them up in any batter you like, fry them till golden brown and delicious. And eat them with homemade ranch or just lemon juice. And they are the most delicious amazing garden flower ever besides the ones you eat on salads. I like them with a slice of a fresh avocado with lemon or ranch. Yum! Thank you for sharing! I love your garden!

Basil - gently chop into ribbons and place in ice trays - fill with olive oil and freeze - pop out into a ziplock bag and keep in the freezer. When you need some olive oil for cooking anything that needs basil just pop a cube or two in the pan.....We actually have basil year round but we still do this for making Sunday gravy. Gives the oilve oil a boost of yummy and for yall up the road this may be a good addition to drying. We are Florida 9a/high b
What a beautiful morning. So much cooler than it's been. Nice spending some time with you. Hmm, something decided to taste the edges of my basil last night.
Made three connected arches in my garden and planted my seedlings along both sides. Cukes, tomatoes, with asparagus beans on one side and snap peas on other, interspersed. Just this past week, just before rains. Carrots just beyond trellis. I love the look. I am attempting to go vertical with everything I can. Too much rain and fear of powder mildew we seem to get each year. Have pumpkin, lady Godiva, butternut, spaghetti, white scallops, crookneck and zucchini seedlings in. Peppers, tomatillos, brussel sprouts and corn planted. Now, waiting! Deciding where to plant my herb seedlings next to. I love you videos!! I live in PA. Last snow was day after mothers day. Finally above freezing here. Usually, we can not plant before June due to weather.

A really rough way is to take 30 off the f temp and divide by 2 to get c it gives you an idea

Roasted radishes are amazing!! They're even better as small roasted chips. My son loves them as a snack, and i love that he's eating healthy, local, and free snacks instead of processed, over-salted commercial snacks.

P.S. Here's a thought, in your raised bed by your garden sign, since that area is shaded by the sign that would be a good place for lettuce since it can take partial shade. Whatever plants & flowers that like a little shade, that would be the perfect spot!

Yes, this. This is why I garden. It teaches me so much about God's goodness and how he provides. Gardening has given me new eyes to look at the rest of life. There are so many little blessings that we will miss if we don't slow down and pay attention. And, gardening is so similar to the rest of it. Really we don't do much. We can't make the seed germinate and continue to grow ...only make the conditions ideal for growth. I may also be in danger of being "too romantic" like Jess. 😂

You are a big garden influence and I am SO GLAD to hear you tell people to break the rules. So many experienced gardeners tell people "you can't" and 99% of the time you actually CAN. And I think "can't" stops a lot of people from trying.

B. Riley Jowett II did that last year but learned not to do heavy things because they all blew over in a storm. This year just did peas.
I would recommend growing quinoa sometime in the future. It takes a good amount of space but is pretty low maintenance. Considering the distance most grains have to travel to make it to our dinner plate, I would say it's worth it. Fruition Seeds sells really beautiful rainbow quinoa seeds. I'm a big fan of growing something interesting, and seeing quinoa stalks growing in someones backyard is definitely interesting! Also, learning to grow some sort of grain can be really rewarding and help you gain self-sufficiency in the long run.

Hi Jess, clematis plants don't like their roots to get overheated. My Dad and then myself have always put a bunch of stones around the base and kept them watered well and they've done really well year after year.
Saying is "Hot face, cold feet" - that how Clematis like to grow. Their faces love the sun, but you have to keep their shallow roots shaded. I don't know how w/ a young tender Clematis would do w/ rocks piled on top of it (never tried it myself), but I do know they will have to try to push back up through it in the Spring. We always just plant a really nice groundcover of some kind (one that can also handle the heat/sun) under all of our Clematis's.
Maybe you can put some herbs under clematis or other perennial. I have clematis behind short bushes, climbing up with a rose, behind a peony, mums, phlox, sedum . it does not like sun on bottom of plant but loves sun on top. Im in Pa. we had a lot of rain this week. Now my green, yellow, & spaghetti squash have powdery mildew. It then spread to cucumbers, cantaloupe snd watermelon. I cut out bad leaves but i was afraid to use fungicide. Hope little melons snd cucumbers keep growing. Squash looked good before mildew but only had male flowers! Thanks for letting us know about neem oil. I tried a spray of hydrogen peroxide / water. This is my first vegetable garden ( i have a big flower garden)and i’m growing it on my deck in pots. Everything was great until this week.My mom could grow anything but i don’t remember her doing any cutting of leaves unless it was to eat it. Maybe i was focused on tying tomato plants and weeding and i didn’t notice. I enjoyed watching your kitchen videos. Felt like i was there with you. Feel bad that you spend your quiet kitchen time talking to us but we really appreciate it. We used to do canning as a family but i did everything but boil jars and seal them. I stopped when my mom passed. She grew the biggest, best tasting tomatoes so her jarred tomatoes with basil were delicious! I wish i had a video of those times- picking vegetables, eating them fresh, and jarring them. I hated that my friends were doing fun things and i had all these chores but they are my favorite memories now. I don’t know how you do it with all your children! Wishing you much happiness! I have learned so much is such a short time from watching your videos. The last few years I have been working a small back yard garden. Last fall we bought 30 acres and this year I am learning how to grow a ton of different produce. Long in ground rows but I am mixing up the plants for better health. I am so excited to watch my garden grown and learn how to care for it all. Thank you for putting out these videos.

Oh my gosh, your garden is a dream!! I've grown up in TX, just south of DFW in the county below, where it was once a lot more country. We had 8 acres with animals and my parents would let me have a garden area. My grandparents lived on the land too and we had all kinds of fruit trees. We sometimes did a veggie garden but my Pa got cancer and no time then. I use to go to Louisiana and help pick my aunt and uncle's garden in the summers as a kid and it was several acres worth. Now, I live in a duplex with my husband and don't have our own land there's several acres between us and the church behind us. My neighbor is a member and I asked if we could do a garden behind our area. The pastor came and disked us 60 ft of garden. This is my 2nd year and I've learned so much from your page. I found your page last year and it's been so helpful! You do a great job explaining but yet still laid back and country. It's relaxing. Thank you!

Try some New Zealand spinach, it loves the heat, won’t bolt and can be used raw in salads or cooked. The more you pinch off the tips the more it spreads. It’s not gritty like real spinach. We love it and you might also.

RE: Lettuce seed -- I like to cover the lettuce flowers with old nylon stockings so that I can catch most of those tiny lettuce seeds. I have also let a few of my Baker Creek Rocky Top and Red Wing Salad mixes go to seed. I love the ruffled, frilly one, too!
My daughter messaged me around noon today that she wanted to call me to talk and I told her that she had to make it quick because your garden tour was due to hit UA-cam. We talked for about an hour, so I am not sure when you actually posted, but this is a testament to how much I look forward to these garden tours. I love my daughter so much that I moved 1000 miles to be close to her, but dang it, it's Saturday! LOL! I can't wait for the ones where you're harvesting all the goodies. These are also wonderful to watch in the dead of winter when all we have are seeds and the dreams of gardens to come.

I think one of the big things of gardening is flexibility. I love that you experiment with things that people say "don't grow next to...", I do the same thing.I had a master gardener freak out on me last summer because I wasn't following the "rules" LOL! This spring is allot different as last spring we went straight to Summer..it was hot fast. It just gives time to enjoy cooler plants, but my pepper plants aren't happy.
Every time I see you drinking coffee from a beautiful mug, I think to myself, dang I really want a special mug or two to drink my coffee and tea from. Just makes coffee time that more special.

I have been so blessed by your garden tours and have started gardening again. Can’t wait to see your video on what to do with basil. I love growing it but just put it in like two dishes. My dad had a green thumb and taught me to grow in a desert (Palm Spring CA) where it would get to 110 in the summer. He could grow anything from corn to watermelon. He passed away five years ago last March and I have such lovely memories of working with him in the garden. After years of not growing anything I have struggled the last two years now in a humid 8b climate (the Texas Hill Country) having to adjust and learn new ways. Thank you for all your info it has helped a lot. May the Lord bless you and all yours and your harvest be abundant.

Last four days, Olympia has had temps in the upper 70's and lower 80,s. I pushed like the dickens to get all my seedlings transplanted because rain was predicted for this weekend. Last night, the forcast changed a bit -- for the worse! This morning, we woke up to 58 degrees, thunder, lightening, rain, and even a little hail! 😳 Ugh!

This year's watermelon is a Turkish variety -- Cekirdegi Oyali. Never grew this one in the past, but look forward to seeing how it performs in the PNW.
Potatoes this year are Yukon Gold and Ozette.

I've been chased out of my garden by the heat hear in Arizona, we had 111f yesterday and 109f today. My sweet potatoes and butternut squash have taken over my front garden 😊 last year I had great success with letting cilantro go to seed and it growing every where that I decided that I would let all my favorite greens go to seed and spread them around and let them come up when they are ready. I'll thin and eat the baby greens or transplant where needed. I got my first 2 cattle panels in last week, my grapes are starting to climb one of them and I need to move my boysenberries to the other one. So glad I found your channel and saw how you use them.

Cattle panel is the best trellis....lasts forever too! You can also just weave the tomato vine in and out of each square as it grows vertically to minimize the tomato green tape attachment/detachment/reattachment time :)
Beautiful tomatoes! I do 12" spacing, as well. I've learned that I can plant the tomatoes right up against the trellises, even if tomatoes on other side of trellis (stagger 6"), assuming you have enough cubic footage of living, nutritious soil. This leaves space at front of bed for beneficials like basil, marigold, nasturtium, peppers, etc.

I watched a video from Baker Creek where they said they plant squash later in the season, like June or July, because the squash bugs are pretty much gone by then. Not sure if that’s the case where you are. Lovely garden! Too much fun❤️🌱
How about Asparagus Jess? As an idea for your extra garden space. Or you could even get it established up in the cottage perennial garden area by the berries. I love asparagus!! I've never personally grown it myself because I forage for it instead... however i have always thought it be nice to have my own patch of it in my garden too.

Your wisdom about the garden and about life inspires me so much Jess. I'm in Australia so in my first season of in-ground gardening as an adult this Autumn. Whenever I get impatient for a spring garden I think about how much more knowledgable I'll be by then and how quickly it's really going to come around.

Asparagus-My favorite food to grow because it takes so little and gives so much. Beautiful in the summer and provides some of my garden with shade from west sun when it is needed most. First to come out in spring and tells me it is time to get my onion sets and peas in the ground. Black eyed peas are great too because they attract pollinators and are nitrogen fixers.
So great to find a homesteading channel who live near me. You have a wonderful garden area. Love it! I’m so impressed with what you have done. Looking forward to watching since I kind of live vicariously through channels like yours.

Yay, I'm growing corn in a raised bed as well for the 1st time. I'm learning a lot growing it. It's windy here so I've run string around the outside and used some stakes in the beginning to support it. :)
I am always amazed by the amount of food that comes from seeds too. Such a blessing. I suggest trying out fried squash blossoms! Just stuff them with cheese or chicken and cheese, or even a delicious roasted pepper with cheese and chicken, whatever! And add salt only, because the flowers are spicy enough that you don't need to add pepper. And then batter them up in any batter you like, fry them till golden brown and delicious. And eat them with homemade ranch or just lemon juice. And they are the most delicious amazing garden flower ever besides the ones you eat on salads. I like them with a slice of a fresh avocado with lemon or ranch. Yum! Thank you for sharing! I love your garden!

Basil - gently chop into ribbons and place in ice trays - fill with olive oil and freeze - pop out into a ziplock bag and keep in the freezer. When you need some olive oil for cooking anything that needs basil just pop a cube or two in the pan.....We actually have basil year round but we still do this for making Sunday gravy. Gives the oilve oil a boost of yummy and for yall up the road this may be a good addition to drying. We are Florida 9a/high b

Made three connected arches in my garden and planted my seedlings along both sides. Cukes, tomatoes, with asparagus beans on one side and snap peas on other, interspersed. Just this past week, just before rains. Carrots just beyond trellis. I love the look. I am attempting to go vertical with everything I can. Too much rain and fear of powder mildew we seem to get each year. Have pumpkin, lady Godiva, butternut, spaghetti, white scallops, crookneck and zucchini seedlings in. Peppers, tomatillos, brussel sprouts and corn planted. Now, waiting! Deciding where to plant my herb seedlings next to. I love you videos!! I live in PA. Last snow was day after mothers day. Finally above freezing here. Usually, we can not plant before June due to weather.
