My grand daughter Marigold & I go out several times a day with a bucket with just a bit of water. We pluck the Japanese beetles off our grapes, black berries, apple tree & our butterfly garden. Then we take the bucket of water & bugs & feed our chickens. They are happy for the treat & we are able to save our plants … and be farm girls together. We thank you Jess 💜💜💜

@@forgingandurbanfarmingatt4745 my daughter never watched Downton Abby until after Mari was born. She’s 3 and doesn’t know what it means to not eat her own eggs. It took a lot of patience to farm again with a little but it’s been so worth it. She loves being a farm girl. We are hoping to have our first milking goats soon. And Mari plans on taking care of them.

I have been watching you for several years and have learned so much. I recently moved back to SC to land that has been in my family for many generations. I am preparing the area for my first serious garden. This spring will be a small start of what I hope will become a large garden to support me in the years to come.

I take so much joy in the way you enjoy the beauty of your garden. You continue to inspire me and encourage me to be joyfully me. I take the same kind of joy in the natural, wild beauty of our mother Earth. But I had stopped expressing it because of outside criticism. Thank you for reminding me that I am free to be joyful anyway I choose.

I love watching my gardens day to day, week to week too. I take lot of pictures to "document" its progress and give me joy in the winter too:) I hate that we are faced with potentially contaminated soil/compost/mulch, but sharing our experiences help others fix/learn/watch out for these issues. Gardeners have a way of making growth/ life out of waste-look at compost:). I have watched other channels that have had contamination by old hay for mulch and they scraped up all the soil in that area, piled it up on another area of their farm, and brought in new soil. Most of us cannot do that. I appreciate so much that you are sharing your experience and trying ways to heal your soil. That, most of us can do. Thank you Jess!

I like the idea of a climbing rose on corner of the green house. Flower ideas for beds around the green house could be miniature irises, dwarf hydrangea so they don’t get too tall to tall. You could play with colors as hydrangea could be white, pink, or blue. Enjoyed the garden tour.

Wonderful tour. You show the reality of gardening with positivity. That’s a necessity in a garden because if you can’t live with some failures you won’t be a successful gardener. Favorite line: “I’m gonna save these first ground cherries for Miah…but I’m gonna eat just one.”😋 Learned a lot more about tomatoes in the heat. Always good to know. The melons, cukes and squash look so good.
So very, very sorry your purchased compost had contamination. Appreciate that you’re teaching us what you’ll be learning about remediation of soil. And hopefully not all is lost if we can learn from such things.
Looking forward to #3 Garden Tour… whenever it comes. The farm has come so far in this past year! We’re all enjoying the journey as it’s growing into the farm you want it to be. I hope non-gardeners or should I say future gardeners or maybe pre-gardeners that are watching your vlogs learn that starting out slow so as not to become overwhelmed will probably grow more success.
    Thanks Jess.🌱

I'm always for a climbing rose, especially yellow roses, I love them. Thank you so much for showing us your beautiful garden, I am 62 and have learned so much form you. I've never been a veggie gardener, always a flower gardener, but I've been watching you and MIgardener for a few years now and trying all the things you mention and so far so good! Now, if I new how to get rid of the squash bugs from my property I would love it. I thought letting my chickens loose after harvest last year we'd have less. Nope they are devastating my summer squash. I guess that is what happens when you don't plant a winter squash, which I didn't do this year because the last two years they have killed them off.

I'm thankful for your content. I'm thankful for your soil problem. My guy's put two raised beds in the front yard to create an area for my wheelchair, last year. I love to garden with god and sing his praise. The beds did so poorly. I was embarrassed to have worked them so hard for so little. My mind and body have been healing. There is value to having physical therapy right out the front door. I thought about what cleans that won't hurt. In my 64 square foot bed, I amended about 3 cups of pelletized lime then watered in 2 tablespoons epsom salt in each box. I left them uncovered all winter to leech the soil. This spring the lavender took off. I was so encouraged and grateful. I've had several volunteer alyssum this year, tall and spindly. I have flowers blooming but no fruit. I'm looking forward to your mushroom therapy. By next year it should produce. Meantime, I put a 200 square foot garden with weed fabric on the other side of the walk, and I'm reclaiming my backyard garden. God is good.

My honey bee's were killed by a raccoon attack. I was able to save a baseball size of bee's. They hung around the hive for a couple of days then Abscanded.
This happened June 21. Today while in my garden I saw two honey bee's. Oh my joy in seeing them. Unless I have beehives; our neighborhood doesn't have honey bee's. Another one of God's special blessings. I am praying and believing that they will make it through Michigan winter.
Just wanted to share something positive.

Add mums and you get 3 full seasons of cut flowers you don’t have to replant. Though you may have to split and share every few years.😊🍀💚

I’m a “garden rubber necker” as well!! I get a lot of ideas from seeing what others are doing. Plus, it just makes me happy to see others gardening. I have noticed around my area that as the old timers pass on, the younger generations are not gardening as much. So when I see a garden now, I always look. When I was kid most people had large gardens around here. Many have farm animals, but surprisingly the gardens are lagging! Hope that changes. Love the way things are looking, especially the cottage garden. Shade cloth on the tomatoes is great idea. I’m thinking is erecting some greenhouse plastic over mine if it looks like we’re going to get a week of rain. Last summer mine were at peak production and we had a week of rain and ruined many.

They were referring to the contaminated soil issue that you had. Looks like they are both avid watchers of your channel.

we had a 3 month heat wave where it was over 40C pretty much the whole time. and the tomato harvests were the best ever. blossoms were NOT dying and falling off. they were growing like crazy. and my garden is a paved patio that is like an oven and all my plants are in buckets. the key i think is to have enough water. i would water every day at about 2pm and flood every bucket with cold water. i also had the buckets sitting in drip trays so theyd have a bit extra water. this cold bath during the hottest part of the day really helped the plants thrive in the heat. before id water they would be all wilted, even if the soil wasnt dry. and then soon after i watered, they would be back to being firm and open and happy again, even tho it was the hottest point of the day. my friend who has sun the entire day, and her planter is in a giant asphalt drive way that is also like an oven, she also waterd early afteroon and she had one tomato plant (med size black topped) that had HUNDREDS of big juicy tomatos. and her roma tomatoes were GIGANTIC...like 8" long and proportionally thick. ive never seen romas anywhere close to that size before, and ive grown that same type before. so if your plants are dropping the blossoms a lot, flood the roots with cold water at the warmest point of the day.....it should help. harder to do with a huge garden, and the cold water wont be retained as much as in a bucket, but it should still help.

How long a garden takes to build depends on ones resources. People need to give themselves some grace.
I'm a person of little money and with health issues, so my garden is a slow evolution from wild meadow and forest to..... what ever the permaculture and forest garden looks like when I die.

Celosia is in the amaranth family, and the leaves are edible. My grandmother grew rhubarb at Lake Tahoe, and it came up through the snow in the spring. It was planted between boulders, so that probably protected the roots a bit.

Yay for Sunflower Steve’s variegated sunflowers! I’m in love. Recommendations for the shady side of the greenhouse: white feather hosta roots from Eden Brothers as a border and something vivid contrasting behind it. I’m doing purple astilbe and bleeding hearts with mine. Also thinking about adding purple coneflower.

I keep a "beetle jar" with some vegetable oil in the garden. Japanese beetles release and drop to avoid danger, so I hold the jar under and tap an individual or group with the lid so they drop into the jar. I just have to remain vigilant with my beetle checks.

I swear there is some weird bug plagues happening over the last few years. Kevin from Epic Gardening has been saying that California has been dealing with terrible Earwigs. Jess is mentioning Beetles and I've noticed an increase of Beetles in NY too. This year we seem to be getting a lot of insects we haven't seen much in the last 3 years.

We are having Japanese beetles badly this year. They have decimated my strawberries. Did not know of their habit of dropping to avoid danger. I will change from "picking" to "tapping" into a jar. Thanks for the info.

I harvested a laundry basket full of broccoli for my garden this week and the minute I open up the netting over my raised beds to harvest it the chickens just start making these happy noises because they know they're going to be able to get in there and eat all the leaves and everything I mean I don't even have the net off and they're already trying to jump in there cuz they know they just like we've been staring at this the whole time and now we get it so they pick the leaves off the broccoli plants and that feeds them for this whole week and they love it

I LOVE the reality of your videos, unlike some garden UA-cams and magazines that invite me to think I have a black thumb and invite me to feel guilty that I don’t have “instant gardens”. They never tell you that a staff of landscapers and gardeners came into make everything appear lush in a matter of weeks. Red flag and my pet peeve? Lush gardens full of spring and fall plants, shade and sun plants growing together at the same time and in full bloom. Tells me they’re potted and/or from a greenhouse as instant garden for a photo shoot.

    • @charlesbrooks5003
      @charlesbrooks5003 2 роки тому

That is my pet peeve too! As a real estate agent I see so many people make instant gardens right before they sell - and both the seller and the buyer genuinely believe the garden will come back the same way next year 🤔💚

Ive been planting what is willing to grow in my soil but continuously trying beans, herbs and tomatoes because it was only in my new bed that I bought to have a bigger pepper/tomato harvest. Summer squash grow prolifically in that bed. I plan on planting corn in it knowing I won't get a harvest but it will be useful for next year
