How To Make Pine Cone Syrup - Mugolio -The Cough syrup you can pour over Pancakes!

- Make Pine Cone Syrup with this easy Mugolio recipe! Pine cone syrup is a delicious and healthy syrup you can pour over pancakes, waffles, or ice cream for a unique and sweet flavor. This syrup is great for coughs and colds, and it's a great addition to your emergency medicine kit.
Here is how I make it:
2 Cups Green young Pine Cones
2-4 Cups of Organic Dark Brown Sugar
(Wear gloves if you don't want sappy hands.)
Dice up pine cones into 1/4 inch thick slices. Toss with the Brown Sugar and spoon into jar. (Fill completely and expect it to decrease in volume as it steeps). Set in a cool, dark place for at least 1 full month, or up to 1 year.
In the first week, let to lid be loose, or uncap the jar periodically to let the fermentation pressure escape. (Some people use an actual fermentation lid.) After this month has passed, empty all contents into a large saucepan and heat slowly over low heat. Stir and turn periodically until all remaining sugar granules are dissolved.
Pour into small (I use 4oz) jars that have been sterilized, screw lids on tight, and set upside down on a cloth until they return to room temperature. Store in a cool, dark cupboard or pantry until you give as gifts or devour. :) (Today I drizzled it over garlic seasoned pork loin. AMAZING!)
I want to list the kinds of trees I have collected that have been used to make delicious Pine Cone Syrup. However, please do your own research and make at your own risk. [It’s important to note that according to the National Library of Medicine, the Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa), Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), and common juniper (Juniperus communis) needles contain high levels of isocupressic acid that has been identified as the abortifacient in cattle and sheep. Because of this, I would use some caution with these pine cones. Also, Common Yew is poisonous.]
With that out of the way, these all have various (delicious) flavor nuances!
Mugo Pine (Pinus mugo)
Austrian or Black Pine (Pinus nigra)
Piñon Pine (Pinus edulis)
Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris
Ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa
Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)
Siberian Pine
White Spruce
Blue spruce (Picea pungens)
Norway Spruce
Cedar (Thuja occidentalis)

Geeeeeeze, I'm 72 and grew up around pinecone and never heard of this. Never to old to learn! Thanks for this !!
Ikr? I'm almost 60, surrounded by pine trees, & I've never heard of this! I can't wait to try it!
I have followed you for many years in Eastern Europe and now in America and I have learned many things from your videos. The greatest blessing I receive is your "Glow" for Jesus and your sharing God's word. God bless you always!
Story time... my s/o is an injured Afghanistan vet and i use to drive semi. We made friends with the local amish, of all people lol!!! They've been a huge blessing to our family of 7 in both kindness, and wisdom. In just the same way, we've been able to bless them when they've needed it too. It's simple, in all things be kind, treat others as you want to be treated, and try to understand.
A terrible storm knocked down a huge pine tree here in east Texas a couple of months ago. I had just learned about Mugolio and took the opportunity to harvest all the small green cones. My batch is setting up nicely! I'm about 6 weeks out. Thanks for the video clarification!
That was God saying, "Here's your pinecones!" 😉
I get so excited when you post. You're so peaceful, calming, and encouraging. I could listen to your wisdom all day. Thank you, and God bless you.
It’s true I feel so calm and good listening. I wish I knew people like her in my life.
@@TracyD2 Me too
"Respectfully" You ARE the doppelganger of a young Raquel Welch!!! Striking!!!!! Thank you for this amazing recipe and information! I'm 62 and never heard of this!!! God Bless You and your loved ones!!!!
Raquel Welch was beautiful! Thank you for that complement. I hope you make some and love it as much as I do. God bless you too!
Ha! There always seems to be elements of your videos that pop out uniquely! My brother-in-law is Romanian and lives with me (and my sister and nephew), they are always bringing home Romanian delicacies, I'll have to ask him about the year long process! Many look forward to this Prepsteader knowledge, many look forward to the Christ-like kindness shown by you Christa, and many of us, myself included, especially look forward to both! God bless you!!!
You are so beautiful and Thank you for your beautiful recipe. We live in SC and up until now, I didn’t even think of harvesting pinecones for anything but Christmas decor, hahah! The Revelation scripture you read was what I was praying to the LORD yesterday on behalf of people I care about. I asked Him to mister and give me wisdom through these dark days on earth, and you literally just read the scripture I quoted to HIM. I ❤Jesus! GOD is so GOOD!
It looks like the cooking stage would be a good place to use a double boiler to protect from the direct heat of the stove.
I’m back to update you on my Mugolio following your recipe...
It’s delicious! I used a large pickle jar to collect and mix my pine cones with the brown sugar. I let it sit for 45 days and finished processing it this evening. Initially (45 days ago) I thought I’d have a lot of syrup. I only netted 24 oz but it is delicious. Next year I’ll increase my batch so that I can give some away. Lol… I’m keeping this batch for myself.
Thank you for being a blessing and a bright light in this dark world. May Yah bless you! ❤️
Oh wonderful!! I am so glad you made some. Yes, I will likely increase the size of my batches in the futures as well. Thank you for your encouragement. God bless you too!
@@PREPSTEADERS ❤️
Have you ever candied the tips afterwards?
I ask God every night to make me a blessing in someone's like the next day. Thanks for this recipe. It's August so will be a long time till pinecones, but I'm definitely going yo try for this. God bless🥰🥰
Gretchen, I'll bet with that kind of prayer, you are a blessing, even when you don't know it. God bless you too!
@PREPSTEADERS Thank you. I enjoy your videos so much. I've saved many and shared them with friends. I pray for rain for Texas. Where I am, none for 20 days!! This oppressive heat is awful. I've been sick with " heat sick ess" for the last week. We know it's man made!! God will punish!! God bless you, Christa🥰🥰💖🙏🙏
My family (in Romania) makes the syrup and sends it to us sometimes. We use it mostly for cough. But also mixed with some mineral water (or the soda stream) to make a yummy drink out of it.
I will have to ask about the in ground storage, but I wouldn’t be surprised it was something our grandparents did. Thank for this.
Mix it with some booze and have a good drink!
Kimchi is buried, why not pine cone syrup?? And if i mixed kimchi with booze, an asian bloody wahenee!!
Finally a use for all our pine cones!
Absolutely! ...and a delicious use, to boot! :)
This was surprising and amazing! God is so good. Wish I'd known about this years ago when I was surrounded by pine trees :) Thank you for sharing. And that Scripture was something I needed to be reminded of, thank You Jesus :)
I am 71 and I wish I found this in the spring! We have a lot of pine trees but the cones are all squirrel ready now, but come spring...I'll be out there getting the green pinecones!! Great video!!! Thankyou! I knew who you were just by your countenance! You confirmed it at the end!! Thankyou for that particular reading from scripture. I really needed that today. Stand Tall, Stay Strong, Keep the Unwavering Faith!!
Lovely! We do have a pine tree that we planted after our youngest left for college in 1999. Today, it's a huge tree, and I always wondered what to do with the cones! Mahalo, for sharing! Always a gift! 🙏🏼🕊🤙🏽🌺
I sooo feel the HOLY SPIRIT through this awesome sharing and ministering of the word, here. WE love you! Jesus bless you Christa and family!
I am so glad and fortunate to have purchased some of your syrup in Columbia. It is delicious! Loved the little honey stick as well. Have a little left. Glad to be able to make it myself next year. Thank you for the recipe!
Wonderful! I am so glad, Cathy! Just this evening I drizzled it over roasted meat and it was fantastic. I hope you have enjoyed every bit of yours.
What sold me was the care you took to look after the active ingredients. Love it. Praise God for your work. 💫
I learned about flour mills from you many years ago, and I finally got one nine months ago. What a difference in my digestive health since I starting baking with fresh milled flour, and get the whole goodness of the grain.
Thanks beloved ! How sweet you are and so happy to found your channel. May Abba Father bless you !
I don't have any pine trees, that looks like honey. Big hugs for you, I love you Christa, Jesus does too. I hope you had a restful peaceful Sabbath day today.
Sister, you are always teaching me something new! God bless you
In Estonia we use spruce new growth same way. You pick the young green new growths in spring time and place them in jar with sugar. It gives nice clear syrup
The greens are used in salads as well. They are really soft and taste good. Some remove the spikes. Or you can just nibble them when taking a walk in forest. Spring vitamins :)
I will be 64 in 2 weeks and I’ve never heard of this in my life. But I bet I make up a batch. And teach my grand babies how to!!! I am super excited about this!!! Thank you Beautiful Prepsteader for sharing your knowledge!!! ❤❤❤
God bless you, for this great video.
I don’t think, I could find cones, but I just wanted to hear you share your recipe. I enjoy listening to you and learn something.
The reading, at the end was very touching, and yes, God willing, I will try, and be a blessing to others.
Thanks again. 😘🙏👍❤️🌹🌟🌻✨✝️
I wish this came out a few months ago as the pine cones are too mature. But I will try this next year. God bless you sister.
I will be gathering these cones this next spring.
Thank you, and thank you for the beautiful promise from God in Revelation. 🤍 🕯🕊
Thank you for this! I live in Maine and we are the Pine Tree state! and I have never heard about pine cone syrup! Next spring I will be sure to gather new cones and try this!
I’m out of season, but I’ll wait and watch like a hawk!! I will wait until the Texas heat has ceased! You are such a blessing, sister!! To God be the glory!
That sounds delicious! Next spring when the cones are going I will make this. Thank you so much for all that you share. I love your channel and you as the hostess.
I cherish your videos! So informative and you are well spoken! God Bless you 100 fold for your labor of Love ❤️🙏🏻
Hi there! I was wondering, not to be rude… but before I make it and use my resources, I wanted to be reassured that this is NOT a fake recipe and is a REAL recipe❤ God bless you and have a wonderful evening love!😊
God bless you sister! I’ve lived on the Cumberland plateau my whole life and never knew of this.
If I had gone to Columbia I would’ve said hi and gotten some too.
I'm not religious but I still love to watch and hear you read from the bible.
I love your videos.
Christa your videos are always very hospitable.
I'll take that as a compliment! Thank you, @BackyardEngineer334!
Can you eat the pine cones like candy after making the syrup ..or do you just throw way
I cant wait to try this! Thank you for another wonderful video and for spreading God's word! ❤
🙌
I can't wait for you to try it, Margaret! God bless you today!
@@PREPSTEADERSI make 5needle pine tea, can I use the pine cones for this? Are the nuts edible? Thank you
I'm very excited to try this. I'd never even heard of it.
You seem like such a lovely person. We do need to spread the light.
OH man. I can see a honey version of this in my future. I don't know if you have ever had mint honey but it has a unique flavor and I'm betting it would compliment the pine in an amazing way. I can't wait for cones to be ready.
You are a precious lady. God Bless you! You are truly blessed!
Never heard of this. HOW COOL!!! Cannot wait to try this. Thanks so much young lady👍🏻🙏🏻
You are so welcome! I hope you love it as much as I do!
@@PREPSTEADERSHi first time commenting at your channel. Thanks so much for the he info. Very interesting and helpful. Abba made herbs, etc. to keep us healthy.
Hey 👋🏽Christa, thank you for this informative video. The Holy Spirit spoke to me about making pine syrup and oil one day while I was driving on a country last month admiring God's beautiful pine trees. Lookie here, girl, 😅 he will tell us what to harvest and when to harvest, when we allow his guidance over our life. Thank you again, my beautiful friend. 💜Sis
I’ve been experimenting with pine and spruce tips. I will start looking for the green cones on my white pine. I’m not a Christian but what you read at the end was beautiful. Thanks for shining.
I love your practical recipes and how to do things, however I can hardly wait for your scripture reading at each end. It has a certain timing and blessing each time. God bless you.
Wow! I'm so excited for spring so I can gather pinecones to make this! It sounds so delicious and so good for us! Thank you!
You are such a lovely person. I wish I had a sister like you. God Bless you. Thank you for all your lovely informative videos. I started a little garden on my 8 foot balcony and got some nice red peppers, celery, green onions. carrots garlic parsley and potatoes as well as herbs. most from scraps of grocery store food. Thanks for all the inspiration and for keeping me calm at the beginning of the Scamdemic.
Thank you for this recipe and shining the light of God on the world!!!
Thank you, @RichFrisk. God bless you today!
I saw your pine syrup video liked it a lot I live in pigeon forge TENNESSEE and happy you're showing everyone how to stay healthy, are you married or have a soul mate you touched my heart, God bless you.
Always love your videos. Thank you for sharing that special message from our Lord at the end. I hope many people heard, and their hearts were softened by it.
Thanks, I will look for the green pine cones next spring.
Love this! Never knew the real name of pine cone syrup, thank you for the wonderful tutorial. Always a pleasure. I had pine cone syrup going now!
This is my second reply to this video this evening. In my first reply I mentioned that I’d need to wait till next spring to harvest cones. I decided to check tonight and to my surprise and delight the cones on my tree are perfect! I’ll be starting my batch in the morning. Again, thank you so much for all of the inspiration. Also, any suggestions that you have to remove the sap from my hands would be greatly appreciated. 😀❤️
How wonderful! I am glad you looked and excited you'll be making some! I really just washed mine off with good dish detergent. Some people use Goop or olive oil first, then dish soap. You could also just wear rubber gloves as some do. Let us know how your batch turns out!
@@PREPSTEADERS I’ll be sure to follow up. Thank you!
❤️❤️❤️
Coconut oil takes it right off. I keep a "chunk" in the fridge. Just rub it on. We live amongst the pinon and get the sap on ourselves often!
@@Mrs.Patriot Thank you for that tip! I’ve got coconut oil and will use it the next time. On a side note, when I burp the jar it smells delicious. I can’t wait to taste it! I feel like a child in a candy store… lol.
The heat breaks down vitamins, but allegedly so does metal. I raised my children in the 80s on homemade baby food, and was told by doctors not to grate fruits with metal and instead use plastic graters or glass, since when the fruit comes in contact with metal, it degrades the vitamins. It's also better to hand-cut vegetables (when you can) like spinach rather than cut it with metallic utensils, because of this. I knew this from my father also. I don't know if it's true or a wives tale, but I still practice this. I also don't stir fizzy Vitamin C with a metal spoon.
Thanks! You're presentation style is very comforting to a luddite like myself who has never cooked, canned or baked. Easier than I thought. Love your posts.
Thank you so much! I was just thinking about that term today (luddite) and wishing I could throw out my phone and computer. :) Thank you for your donation! I hope God blesses you doubly in return!
How cool! I live in the piney woods of East Texas and am surrounded by loblolly pines. I’m going to try this!
I’m surrounded by pine trees and can’t wait to make this Thank you for sharing with us God bless
I missed you! Glad to see you again!❤
I am glad to be back with another episode! Thank you for the comment! :)
What a great recipe! I had no idea pine cones had vitamin C. I did know the pioneers had scurvy and were told by Brigham Young to not peel their potatoes to cure it.
That sounds delicious. I will definitely be trying this recipe. We have Pine trees all over the property.
I wonder how candy like the cone bits would be if one dehydrated them after processing the syrup? Crunchy? Sweet? Just a thought to " waste not, want not". BTW, wonderful video! Thank you, Christa!
Another wonderful recipe and time spent together. If I don't meet you on this side of Heaven, I know I will see you on the other side! I love that you are glowing for King Jesus. Bless you and keep those videos coming.
In GA they do a similar recipe for grape wine by burying the jars for up to 6 weeks. The grapes in GA are Muscadine and Scuppernongs. All you do is load a jar as you did with the pinecones and add a cup of sugar. White or brown works. I recommend raw cane sugar. Then cover and bury the jars. OH MY do they smell lovely. Heating after the 6 weeks isn't necessary because no sugar is left and simply strain thru cheese cloth. I am going to go searching for pine needles as soon as spring arrives. Thank you for this video. awesome !!!
You might not be able to use Lodge pole pine. You can't use the needles for tea. This look so fantastic. Thanks!
Krista! Are you on any other platforms besides UA-cam?
They are making it harder and harder to be self-reliant here.
Just don’t want to lose any of your content!
Wonderful!!! I’m catching this too late in my season for green pine cones but sweet gum spikey balls have a wonderful pine like aroma to them when they are crushed. They have wonderful anti viral medicine properties for winter called shikemic acid. I’ll be making sweet gum ball syrup to see if it’ll taste as good and provide some extra protection for the coming months. Thanks for your wonderful channel!
I LOVE this channel! Thank you for the scripture at the end!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼♥️♥️♥️
My paternal grandmother told me this recently and shes southern...black and natie American
I am totally enthralled by this sweet lady. s
She absolutely thrills me.
Yes..I am 71…never heard of it either..always grew up in Tx with pine cone trees..but I don’t care for the smell of pine trees ..hope it taste a lot better than I imagine..thank u for info but it’s too hot here now .( just turned sept) will try to remember in spring..
Ive never heard of this. Thank you so very much. We have a lot of pine trees. Most are extremely tall though. Is it too late to gather in the Mississippi area? Can pine cones be saved for a period of time while gathering, or do you process each gathering? Love your wonderful spirit when sharing such knowledge and wisdom.
Be the light! Yes and amen. 🙏👑🙏
Just a word of caution: pine needle tea is not recommended for pregnant women because it can cause miscarriage. Might be a good idea to avoid any consumption of pine if pregnant, just to be safe. Thank you for the video! God bless!
Wow! I grew up in hohenwald TN. 30 minutes from Columbia, TN. Mule days. ;)
Wow! This is so interesting !
Now, all I need to do is wait til April ...
Thanks for sharing.
We love you in Albuquerque NM.
Thank you! Yes, in Albuquerque you are likely past the "green pine cone season" but I hope you'll try it in the Spring!
Beautiful. Thank you.
