  • Regensburg is an incredible place to visit, and even though it was a chilly winter day, we still had an amazing time exploring parts we hadn't been to before. Don't think you have to go here only in the Summer, there are plenty of food options and sights to keep you occupied when the snow is flying.
This trip was full of ups and downs dealing with COVID restrictions, our camera and keeping our little one warm. But, we had a great time nonetheless and can't wait to come back during the warmer months to experience more of what Regensburg has to offer.

07:00 This is the "Bruckmandl". It marks the highest point of the bridge. There are a few theories about it´s origin, one of them is that this is the leading constructor of the bridge, who with the help of the devil had won a bet with the construction leader of the cathedral, which building would be finished first. This is the 3rd iteration of the sculpture, the first was destroyed 1579 and the second one lost an arm in 2012 and was reconstructed in 2018, when the bridge itself was re-opened after renewing it.

Close to Regensburg is also Kelheim, with a large monument the Befreiungshalle (Hall of Liberation), which commemorates the victory against Napoleon in 1813-1815.
It’s a pretty impressive monument, especially the interior and from Kelheim one can drive with a ship through the Danube Gorge to the Weltenburg Abbey and back.
It’s a nice day trip during summer time.

Out of curiosity to which battle do you refer?
The Hall of Liberation as such commemorates the time from 1813 to 1815 when Bavaria joined Prussia, Austria, Russia, the Brits, other German states etc. to fight against Napoleon.
Of course the alliances changed a couple of times, from 1805 to 1813 Bavaria was allied with Napoleon and prior to that it had fought against France.
In 1812 Bavaria lost around 30.000 soldiers as a result of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia.
It joined the Coalition against Napoleon a short time prior to the Battle of Nations in Leipzig in 1813.

Many thanks for this city tour. I've never been to Regensburg, just crossed on the autobahn and was impressed by the Walhalla building even from much more far away. What a great view over the Donau valley especially at sunset. WOW. Well seemed to be it was very cold even germans would say: there is no bad weather, its just bad clothing. You have been well dressed to protect from the cold anyway. Take care of catching a cold but you do very well, going out to fresh air. Good idea to look for a book with hidden places worth to visit. Whenever you visit cities dont miss to walk to the Altstadt. Even some have been rebuild after WWII its like a walk into history. I wish you a nice coming week. Stay healthy

You have to visit again in the summer, when everyone is hanging out at the Danube river in the sun. Also in winter, the Christmas markets are pretty great and cozy, but they were canceled the last 2 years due to covid, maybe next winter they will happen again.

There is a story behind the status looking at the dome direct. It was said that they were competing who will finish first the building of the cathedral or the bridge so the person building ther bridge was always looking towards the dome to see it it's finished

    Hi everyone,
I was so surprise when I found your Video in my recommendations. I do live in Regensburg and I love this city!
In Winter Regensburg is magical, but you truly should see it in Sommer. Especially on hot Sommer days and evenings. During the days you will find people lying on the grass around the Donau or Regen and swimming in it (you can see them swimming under the Steinerne Brücke). On the evenings the folks in Regensburg spurce up and go drink some wine while watching the water (either standing on the bridge or sitting along the river). Regensburg is called “the most Northern Italian City” and it truly is in the summer. You will find a lot of people busking cause we have a lot of cultural events in Regensburg. Even with the pandemic, the summers in Regensburg are just as magical as before. I hope I could convince you to visit Regensburg again. Have a great day and stay healthy ☺️

A quick reminder never swim under the steinerne brücke (stone bridge). The flow of water kills you! Theres a place where you can swim BUT ask a tourist guide where it is. :) anyway Regensburg is beautiful city.

Regensburg is certainly beautiful and worth seeing, but it is also only one of hundreds of cities in Germany that are worth seeing. Alone the cities with half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages would make a very long list.

Some more "fun" facts about the Stone Bridge:
    1) As you can see there is a small and a wider passage into the city: The smaller one is the original one, whereas the wider one next to it was built around 1901 to allow the - back then new - tram to pass over the bridge (the tram network was abandoned in the 1960s).
    2) Until 1997, the bridge was used as a normal route for vehicle traffic. You were allowed to simply drive over it with your car (public transporation was still using the bridge until 2008).
    3) At the end of WW2 in April of 1945, the Nazis blew up a small part of the bridge (together with all other bridges crossing the Danube around the city) to slow down US troops from crossing the river and taking over the city - it gained them like 4 days.
