WAS BUYING THIS A MISTAKE? BMW 340i Critical First Impressions

  • I've had my 340i for over a week now, just long enough to note a few things I like and some things I don't like. After driving an E90 for 6 years, there were a few things that jumped out at me about my new F30.
At the end of the day, I know this was the right choice. While the new car is slightly larger and has worse steering feel, it gets enough things right that I can look past its shortcomings.
The highlight of the 340i is the B58 motor paired with the 8 speed automatic transmission. The shifts are lightning fast and the motor is impressive, even in stock form.

    So a couple of things:
    1. The wheels and center cap issues, that stems from proper maintenance (or lack thereof) and people simply not washing & protecting their wheels properly. My wheels are from 2016 and no issues at all. Not ceramic coated yet but they're sprayed with P&S Bead Maker every time I wash.
    2. A true car guy is someone who simply is passionate about cars. Regardless of what they have in terms of engines and transmissions. Its everywhere where you see guys whos identity is constructed on them driving stick and bashing automatics left and right.
I can drive stick too, but its not a personality trait like some people.
My bimer has the same ZF8 Speed and its super quick and I wouldn't change it.

Quality control is an issue with BMW and the rims on my car were so unimpressive it’s one of the first big changes I made to it. I also can’t figure out their entertainment system not being more Android or Apple friendly. I just paid $100 for a map update and once I installed it, it was like, “Gee, I should just stick to Waze on my Android phone and forget this limp navigation system.” I look forward to your blogs the same way I did for a new Motor Trend, Road & Track or Car & Driver magazine when I was a teenager - 50 years ago! • @shoman24v

I have been driving stick all my life. First car in 2000 was a 1990 Taurus SHO, then a 1999 E36 5-speed I bought in 2004, 2002 E46 5-Speed I bought in 2017, 2000 E39 Wagon I bought in 2018 (auto but had my E46 concurrently), and now I have a 2018 F30 330i w/ZF I bought in 2021. I honestly never thought the day would come where I wouldn't see myself driving a stick. But, I bought my wife a 2017 X3 sDrive28i last year and after experiencing that ZF 8-speed, I was changed. The ZF in my 330 is tuned much better than our X3 and holy cow does it shift fast. Manual mode on these things work great too. And the upside, my wife can now drive my car 👍 So, let's not call it a fanboy thing, more like an evolution of your driving experience. I'm not 20 anymore. And let's face it, trying to find an F30 in a manual is very difficult, and trying to find it in the trim you like is like hens teeth. My 330i has so many options, I wouldn't dare trade it for a manual transmission.

I've never had any issues with them and whenever someone's in my car for the first time they are always blown away by the cupholders the most out of everything haha. To me they aren't too far to reach and if I need something else for some reason, I just use the heated/cooled one in the center console. Only thing that kinda bugs me is the transmission when you let off the gas after getting on it. Tends to sit a high rpm like it doesn’t know if it should downshift or upshift. I find the F30’s overall interior build quality is definitely a step up from the E90. Size wise when we park them next to each other, the F30 looks like a 5 series compared to the 328i.

I owned an E90 myself, it was my first bmw. Nostalgia aside, once you get used to the drive, you'll love this just as much as the E90, the steering definitely felt better on the e90 though, I'm hoping to upgrade to a f chassis 340 or 440 next year, currently driving a 428 f36, the longevity and lack of power of the 4 cylinder turbo is my biggest issue. My brother has a 340i and I've driven it many times, I love it. white f30's with black accents(lip, spoiler, wheels, side skirts, etc) look absolutely amazing.

In the early 90s automatics we're clunky, slow to shift and came with only 4 forward gears. These days they're way better. I've totally changed my view on the whole manual vs automatic transmission.

I upgraded from a 2006 325i to a 2017 320i this week. Definitely agree with the steering and sport mode comments. The updated entertainment system, cup holders, keyless entry and ease of maintenance compared to the 325i make up for it IMO.

I personally don't care if a car has automatic or standard transmission lol. Sometimes I don't feel like shifting and just want to let the car do its thing. Now, I so feel that people who bash on automatic transmissions are closed minded, just like car people who hate on Teslas for not being gas powered or loud lol. You can be a car guy and go for comfort and not performance. But the new whip is so beautiful 🥰 I hope to see a detailing or wash video on it!

i think the most people don't drive stick shift because they want respect from others - the most stick shift drivers like me drive it because it's way more safer in the drift and driving automatic or paddle shift becomes boring after a while but sure you're right with the performance argumentation. have fun with your f30 :)

I bought a 2015 F31 in March and still have my 2011 E90. You ain’t lying about the vague steering. I drive the e90 most of the time and regret I promised it to my 17 year old daughter in November. I keep telling her it’s a better driver. She better take good care of it. 😢

I went from an 06 e90 xi to an f10 and you mentioned EVERYTHING that was disappointing about the f series. Cracked me up. It was hard to get over the loss of the best steering and feel in the e90. I still miss it. And the xi can pull through corners like nobody’s business. But when I got coilovers (and as long as you are in sport) you get a lot if the “feels” and fear of potholes back. Stock just isn’t the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. But as you build it becomes the “Ultimate Driving Machine”. Good luck with this build. You will be happy with the choice you made. I felt conflicted at first too but in the end you will love it. GET THOSE COIL-OVERS FAST. Godspeed or BC will be just fine for the price point. It will be the most satisfying upgrade you will do to get the BMW feel back. Then you can really enjoy the pull, speed, and quickness of the car without that tinge of regret.

I don't understand the whole street cred on driving a stick. In Sweden (where I live), pretty much everyone knows how to drive a manual because most people have to learn that in driving school, so no one gets bragging rights for knowing how to drive a manual. Having a good automatic gear box just makes the whole driving experience so much better imo.

Congrats for the buy! I think it was the natural choice to make after the E90. I would’ve searched an M Package one over interior/exterior Colors but hey, it’s a 340i so it’s letting you space for upgrades and you start with the most powerful option of engines aside the M3.

Me personally I really enjoy the tactile feel of a manual.
I can't explain why but executing a clean heel-toe downshift, when you feel it or rather don't feel anything as you release the clutch but you hear the engine roar. That's a pure feeling of satisfaction for me, couldn't live without it.
But I wouldn't mind having a good auto trans on a second car, the F1 feel of paddles is also nice, can't deny that.

But I'm looking at upgrading to a X3 M40i which has the B58, also the same transmission pairing I believe (ZF 8 Speed). Don't listen to the 2 people man! This is the evolution of car ownership and I think you made a fantastic decision.

When I had to take my '06 325i to the dealer for a repair I was able to get a brand-new 2019 320i as a loaner, and the biggest difference I noticed was the steering. I hated it, even in performance mode. I was pleasantly surprised that my '06 still drives just as nicely as a brand-new one, and in the case of steering is far superior.

I went from a e46 to f30, I’ve also driven some e90s as well. The steering is the one that sucks, but with a strut bar and some sportier suspension you can increase feedback. It will never be as good as hydraulic steering feedback wise but it definitely changes it

    • @halogre33
      @halogre33 4 роки тому

Nate depends on what your looking for. If you want something newer that’s more reliable, more spacious, and a comfortable daily driver I say go with the f31. If you don’t mind missing out on some new technologies, still reliable but a little more maintenance due to age, and a sportier feel go with e91. Also the f31 is going to handle better overall and is going to have more options when buying. I went with the f chassis because I wanted something newer and something that was gonna be easier to drive but also fun when I’m in the mood.

    • @nate7906

Gregory Montague hard to say. I am buying one of the two for the main reason. I just started a job that’s a 88 mile round trip 5 days a week. The F3x is definitely more efficient.

Justin, I have a 2011 sport package e90 335. Bought it new and kept in great shape. Probably the best car that I have ever owned. I just helped my son get into a 2015 N26 equipped F30.
I have driven these over the years as loaners while my car was in for service. I never realized what a nicely balanced car it is. I am not a huge fan of the steering, but I do like the idea of less drag on the engine. Eventually, I could see myself trying to find an m-sport 340 and swapping out the rims/tires for a staggered set up. Anyway, love your work on the e90, especially the m-sport steering wheel, I did that on my car as well. Looking forward to see what you do to the F30. Good luck!

I actually really like the overall design of the F30 but man, the E90 is something special. Even pre LCI the E90 is so damn classy. Being a mechanic, I saw so many BMWs owned by people who know about cars. I know about cars, and I've fixed copious things in my E90. They are something special. The rear end of an E90 is classier than the F30 340i. 340i Still beautiful.
