    Good to hear you speak about this after reading the review on your website. I think they got us with the 1.2: you only have to fiddle between 1.2 and 1.4 as you hold focus to realise it’s hardly a visible difference even to those of us who are looking, let alone Joe Public. Factor-in the weight and the price, and it’s a no-brainer. You’ve clearly managed to take the lens and make good money from it, though: your results have been stunning, so the lens has more than paid for itself.

    Good man. I bought and sold Canons 85mm F1.2L THREE TIMES over several years. When it hits it can be magic, but the 85mm 1.8 could do 98% of the same, with faster focus, a lot less weight and a lot more money to do other things. Super fast glass is fun, but having done hundreds of weddings, I couldn’t justify keeping it.

    An amazing lens. On my A7R4 the results especially at F1.2 are magical.

      It's a fab lens; there is a look to the 1.2 that the 1.4 cannot do - I think the 1.2 really sings on the R series and the A1 as you can zoom in and see the goodness!

    Thank you for your review. I’m very happy with my copy but did add the f/1.4 for a travel kit. Still plan to keep f/1.2 since other than size/weight there are no negatives and I’m not making my living from my gear these days. For me the 135/1.8 GM is of course much bigger. Enjoying your posts and glad I found your channel.

    Wow my question was answered in the first minute, was it worth it over the 1.4, thanks!

    The F1.2 is not so much big as heavy. It fits on my RS3 mini gimbal but it's too heavy; it can be made to work but movements need to be very slow and balance right on. DJI RS3 mini + A7C + 50f1.4 is a killer combo.

    I got mine before the 1.4 GM popped up, but at a price lower than the 1.4. How did I do that? Black Friday at the online shop plus 2 stacked cashback promos from Sony Europe. The 1.4 isn’t exactly tiny either, so I’m pretty happy with my choice.

  • @SilatShooter
    @SilatShooter Рік тому +1

    So if you had to choose between a new 50mm f1.4GM or a clean used 50mm f1.2 GM for $250 more? Which would you choose?

    • @saywellhq
      @saywellhq  Рік тому +2

      Well…. depends.
      The weight saving is significant, especially for me as I’m carrying the lens around all day at weddings.
      If I was a portrait photographer or someone who didn’t need to carry it for 8-10 hours for a wedding - I’d say the 1.2 for the price you are quoting would be the one I’d go for.

      @@saywellhq appreciate the feedback! Mulling over, hard to resistance the f1.2 but know the weight will become an issue if I want to take it on a trip.

    great review, i like how you presented the conculsion in the beginnig. Unfortuantly they don't make the 50 1.4 in RF canon mount. But i've been shooting with teh 1.8 nice and light weight but always wonder is it worth it to get the 1.2. great channel! new sub!

    Do you use the aperture ring in the lens or the scroll ring in the camera body
    More?

    • @saywellhq
      @saywellhq  10 місяців тому +1

      I always use the aperture ring (if the lens has one).
      Because I have the cameras down by my side (off my Holdfast), when I grab a camera, I grab the grip and often I'm grabbing very close to the top of the camera and I know I would be catching the back dial, which would move the aperture.

      @@saywellhq thanks for quik reply. I have sony a7iv and a6000 both with kit lenses 28-70FE and 18-55mm aspc. Which are top 4 must buy FE lens in your opinion?

  • @illius85
    @illius85 Рік тому +1

    why do you move over to the 1.4? just because of the weight?

    • @saywellhq
      @saywellhq  Рік тому

      The size and the weight were the main reasons. By saving that weight, I can battery grip my camera now and it not be far too heavy.
      If the 1.4 had not been released, I would still be happily shooting the 1.2.

    Can you make a video with this lens in crop mode ? how the images look like at 75mm 1.8? and maybe compared the crop mode with an 85 1.4? this could make a difference what i buy and if it worth the extra cash

    • @NataliiaBlessingheart
      @NataliiaBlessingheart Рік тому

      ohhh, i have the same question in my head! what if i could skip 85mm f/1.4 lens and go instead in crop mode on A7RV with 50mm f1.2 for a creamy bokeh (one lens working for two strategy😎)? and also would be the 1.2 lens much better in this case than the 1.4 50mm sony gm lens or not (especially for outdoors nature shooting, where the background is to busy when it is not a headshot)?

  • @skaBABBLZ
    @skaBABBLZ Рік тому

    Would you recommend this lens for gym settings shooting video and photo

    • @saywellhq
      @saywellhq  Рік тому

      Absolutely!
      The 1.2 is an incredible lens, and depending on how you shoot your gym stuff, you might find that the 1.2 is better than the 1.4 for lens flare.
      The 1.4 GM has a tendency to flare when light is pointed directly into the lens; this causes some quite nasty-looking lens flare. The 1.2 is much better for lens flare and the control of that flare.
      You will not be disappointed in the 1.2 or the 1.4 GM lenses, but if you shoot stuff where you like to flare into the lens - the 1.2 is better.

      Wow thanks so much for the insight it definitely gives me confidence in the 50 1.2.
      I just picked up the 35 1.4 GM and love the sharpness but found myself missing something when shooting video and I felt the 50 1.2 might be it. I’m new to primes but I want to really get comfortable with them after using zooms for a while.
      I appreciate the feedback, I’ll be exchanging the 35 and going all in on the 50 1.2 for my A7IV.

      That Nikon 50 1.2 and the new 85 1.2 are very big lenses! Be interesting to compare the Nikon 1.2 vs the Sony to see if the size savings Sony has made is to the detriment of IQ.

    I don't like the 50/1.2 nor the 1.4 because they are too expensive for what they are.
    I went from 50/1.4 to 50/2 > I think it is more pleasant to the eye.

      The great thing is we have the options!
      A few years back we were very limited, but now we have the first party lenses from Sony along with third party options from Sigma, Tamron and Samyang to name a few.
      For weddings and the types of venues I find myself in, the extra light I can get from a 1.4 can make a big difference to me, especially for winter weddings when it gets dark in the UK really early!
