- I was lucky enough to be invited on this amazing SERIES 1 ONLY trip into the Mt Whitnow station, a high country New Zealand farm.
This was an incredible trip, with amazing views and some pretty iconic Land Rovers.

Timeless looks. How you imagine a 4X4 should look. 👍
I wonder how much of this modern Land Rover crap will still be running in 15 years time .... I had to be realistic as 70 odd years is in the realms of fantasy.
nice footage, cool trip!
The absence of dreadful music while you are driving allows viewers to experience vicariously the roads less travelled. Thanks. Most enjoyable. 👍🏻🙏🦘
Well said.
This is brilliant Hayden - felt me getting a little misty eyed at the sight of all those series 1's - for many of us old jokers, we learned about 4WDing in these equally old landrovers....
Awww thanks mate 👍🏽 🙏🏽
Glad you enjoyed it
An there was me thinking my 40 year old landy was getting old..... when it not yet even middle aged! Great video, fantastic trail and scenery.
Same here, my 88 is 47 year old and looks worse than al those series ones lol.
Nice video. Is the red one a 202 holden? We had one years ago with a Nissan LD28 and a fairly overdrive unit. Chap from Arrowtown bought it (3.5k from memory, oh how times have changed) Series 2a, rag top and it was painted in Desert Sand colour. (I’ve still got half a tin of the old paint in the shed) Was a bit of fun. Shouldn’t have got rid of the old girl.
I hear ya! Yeah 161 Holden in Red. In recent years I added a Roamerdrive, nice!
Or the Landie! 🤣😂🤣😱🙈👍🏻🙏🦘
Thank you so much for these collections. You have really taken us through memory lane. Land rover never dies. Land rover can go anywhere.
Beautiful video H🔥Keep it coming 💪
One thing about the Holden motor,a 9/16;and a 1/2 inch spanner got it covered,I had 2/A with a 186,took it some places, only broke one axle..!
I remember back in the 80s when we used these as every day work wagons but with 186 holdens and rover 90 diffs great to see. Always kept a spare set of axles handy lol.
The Tortoise and the Hare; slow and steady wins the race. Those old things just chug along without a thing to prove.
Beautiful country with the classical old Landy. I love it
Hell, takes me back a bit. I recall in 1971 [I think] before I took a Commission, I was Driver/Operator for my 3 Field Sqn OC and went with him to reccie a route around Cass. We crossed the Cass River, found what we had to and then returned to base. Later I lead out the Battalion convoy over the route we had previously reccied. When we came to the river, I entered square, turned the wheels up-stream and gunned the engine. I sailed on across the river with virtually no water getting into the cab. BUT, on the opposite side, I looked back to see all the Bn vehicles stuck in the bloody river; most had hydro-locked. Another occasion on the same exercise, we came to a rather steep side of a ravine. The OC said that we better backtrack and find an alternative route down - but I said the Rover would easily go down that slope. He looked at me and said, "I'll get out an walk!" Needless to say, the Rover went down with no problem at all. I loved that old Landrover Short wheelbase. Too thirsty to own one privately though.
Red colour OYAK OYAI
they have a sound no other vehicle has
Beautiful sceneries and a sweet bunch of old girls enjoying themselves, thanks for sharing
Beautiful non-damaging green-laning enjoying the scenery. Classic Landies are awesome. The most inspiring part however was that view of the inside of the cockpit, Red Lever in 4-Low whilst climbing, towards the end
Glad you enjoyed it
70 years old... Like Granville's 20 yr old broom.. had 7 new brushes and 4 new handles. Series and defenders, you can reasonably replace chassis, rebuild engine, transmissions, bodywork. Can last a lifetime.
Fair show of aluminum - old Landys never die.
Kind of like the old folks you see shopping on a Saturday morning with their Zimmer frames.
A wee bit creaky but still going strong! 😉😆
🤣🤣🤣
*aluminium. Bloody Americans (lol)
@@DontEatTheAnimals blame it on autocorrect!
Yery nice place just like our Darjeeling
There is a view point in Maneybhnjang
To Sandhakpho Its height is 3,636m.

love it
The only thing worn out on old Orange are the bonnet hinges .
Haha, one or two other bits as well but keeps chugging along (-:
that is awesome
BEAUTIFULLY, WONDERFUL 👏 NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿 ❤ LIKED VIDEOS 📹 ❤
Thank you very much!
ZIKHOMO ZAMBIA 🇿🇲 ♥
That trail is majestical!
Sorry to be picky but there was never a Series 1, it was the Land Rover. When Rover decided to 'upgrade', they called it the Series 2, hence the error! Lovely vid anyway, we still operate daily a 53 here in the UK !
Thought it looked familiar country, as soon as I saw the little hut appear I knew where you were, I did a bit of casual work next door on Mt Virginia years ago, and it's not far from where I live, have only been as far as the hut would like to do the whole track .great video
El paraíso...😍😍
The Holden's such a great conversion,
Greetings Hayden, that was a great tour through the 'back blocks' of the South Island, those series 1's are tough little vehicles, if i don't see another video before Christmas, I would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year, bedt regards from a ex ChCh lad now living in Melbourne.
Thanks Les. Appreciate the support 🙏🏽
74 years old!. Good stuff getting out and about with your mates 👍🇳🇿
How big was the backup team, Ha,Ha
No backup team needed thankfully 😀👍🏽
Another top shelf video mate, shame your 2a was excluded from the fun!!
Cheers Sam. It was quite nice not having to drive all day !! 😎👍🏼
Yep, you'd be hard pressed to find an earlier RR or Defender that's still running or Road Worthy . Most have either been flogged to death , rusted or are locked away somewhere to become someone's barn find . These old things are so capable & will outlast just about anything else.
Looks like everyone had a crackin time.
Cheers for taking us along.
Thanks mate. Was a fantastic day
Nice cars. Nice hills. What we knew they were, they are still. Of New Zealand, what did we know?
ThaT are

well who are These men?
do They have a driving licence like i?
🤣
Something for you to follow up on - via UA-cam - video heading "Hundreds of Range Rovers left in middle of nowhere" author Imstokze (12.45 mins) - you will need a box of tissues.
Question of the vehicles shown, how many are x NZ Army?
Hard to know, the NZ army had very very few 86 or 88" series 1s, most were 80s that did them until the early 70s when they were replaced and sold. The majority of 80s were 52 or 53, only a few 51s. On the trip were a handful on ex army 80s, I didn't count, maybe 3 including my 51?
Another cracking video, Hayden. All the Landy's look amazing. Hope I look that good when I get to my 70's!
Thanks mate !! It's hard to believe how well they all did !! 74 years old !!
wonderful, thanks for sharing these great videos of your beautiful country
No worries at all. Glad you enjoy them. 🙂
That’s it! I’m moving to N.Z.
Good move !! 👏
70% of every Land Rover ever made is still on the road.
Great to see, these old timers going strong and well loved. 🇬🇧
Learnt to drive in those NZFS 1960s
I learnt how to drive in the Land Rover (series 2a) I still currently use. (Was originally my dads)
If you can drive a series land rover, you can drive anything!!
Hello from California, we have a 1951 series 1 "80" inch it's been in the family since my grandfather bought it new.
Wow, incredible. That's priceless.
A fabulous drive for fabulous vehicles. A perfect combination.
Cheers Tony.
So can anyone drive these awesome roads or are they private? If private how do you get permission to drive there? I ask as I just arrived in NZ on my rtw drive and haven't found any places like this to explore
Hey there. This track is on a working high country farm, so yeah, it's private.
There's a link in the description to a website that will help you find tracks to explore in the south island
Nice, a beautiful series 1 land rovers.
Amazing, would of loved to be a passenger on this.
If I could afford to own and store a Landy collection an old series would definitely be in it.
Maybe one day!
Nice route! 👍
Heck yeah!
brilliant! miss my 1951 ex army landie .
Thanks. 🙏🏽😁
What a Beautiful thing to see... Cheers 🍻
👍🏼 cheers
0:13 nice Toyotas in the background ;)
Cheers
🤣
Hi Hayden, noticed your Landry was not there. Hope all ok
Hey, yeah mine is a 2a, this trip was for series 1 only.
@@hayden_jones ahhh. Should do read the title. Lol
My Disco's 20 years old. I'm 46. We're gonna grow old together!
That should always be the plan.
So helps us God!@@hayden_jones
Awesome video, awesome trip and even more awesome Series 1 Land Rovers. Nice one guys
Thanks. It was a fantastic day 😀
Love it!
Has the red landrover got the Triumph 2000 engine in it,looking when the points were checked.?
161 cu.in Holden. A very common conversion to put Holden 6's in them in NZ and Oz from the 60s thru to the 90s
@@danielfoster1956 Excellent thanks....I would love to have an early Landrover but Im in my 70s now.I should have done it a few years ago. There was a chap rebuilding them in Henderson,on the main road through the town center, also up in the Far North in Kaitaia when I lived up there back in the 70-80s.Cant beat the early Landrover.!
@@jungleman4921 totally agree (-: Shame theyve got a bit pricey in recent years but there's still the odd one at a reasonable price to be had. You're never too old to live the dream 😁
"Siventy Four"!
🤣🙏🏽
@@hayden_jones Fantastic trip! I have a 1955 series 1 in pieces at the moment. I'm looking forward to the day I can drive it!
Are these public roads ,
No unfortunately they pass through a farm. So without permission from the farmer these are closed to the public.
This is lovely to see.
It was lovely to do !! Thanks for watching
As a viewer from the UK, do these sorts of trails in NZ have public access like the 'greenlanes' we have in the UK, or do you require special permission to drive them? It looks absolutely stunning!
Yeah it's a mixture really. This particular track required special permission from the farmer.
@@hayden_jones Spectacular either way. If I manage to get out there visiting kiwi relatives then a few NZ trails will have to be on the bucket list
Mate there are heaps of them that are free don’t forget there is less then a million people in the South Island and England would fit in there easy just off the top of my head I can think of 20 and they all have side roads etc there are lots more that are free some farms charge but it’s not much heaps of public land
