I'm not sure if you figured this out at a later stage or in a later video, just thought I would comment it anyway. On the MPK, the pads use MIDI channel 10 vs the keys which use MIDI channel 1. When you arm your track and select all MIDI channels for that track, if you just select channel 10 for the drum track and channel 1 for your keys/synth track the device will automatically be mapped to use the correct VST for the desired buttons/keys/pads. For interest, I figured this out in the MPK program editor, if you click Tools at the top and then "Midi Monitor" it shows what note/value/channel is being used when you hit a button on the device. You can also change the channel used by the pads in the program editor if you need it to utilise a different channel, though I think this would only become necessary if you are using multiple MIDI devices at once.
Jody and Jarred you guys are the best! Thanks for taking the time to put this out there. Changing pad mini channel to 1 in Editor was the answer. Also Reaper cant be using the MPK mini.
Great video. You earned my subscription. I just picked up one of these and have also started using Reaper for the first time and it's information overload, I also thought I could just plug it in and play. lol I'm still overwhelmed by it all, but it's slowly starting to make sense. Thanks.
Thank you! Yeah there is a big learning curve with all of this stuff. If you haven't found Kenny Gioia's channel, called Reaper Mania, that is the place to go to learn more about using Reaper.
@@jodymarks4461 Thanks for the reply. To be honest, I'm kinda stumped right now and will probably take a break from tinkering for a couple of days to see if some info sinks in. I've watched quite a few videos (Including Kenny's) and most of the info is going over my head right now. I've tinkered with Akai MPC and can drag and drop drum samples/beat samples onto the pads, no problems there, but I can't seem to save that to a preset that Reaper uses. I've still no idea how to load one of my own synth samples so I can play around with it on the keyboard. I can also load a basic FX plugin (VSTi Realsynth) in Reaper and play around with that. That at least shows that the MPK is working. I bought a couple of sample packs to try and get the sound I'm looking for, I thought it would be just a case of using a GUI to drag samples into specific pads/keys folders or something, but it's now clear it's a whole new world that I've walked into. I really thought it would be drag and drop, but it's not that simple is it. lol
Many thanks for this. But, do not understand why you have to set up / connect the audio interface - surely, because the AKAI MPK mini mk3 is a MIDI device (which connects with your computer via USB), and because the audio interface takes care of audio (i.e., non-MIDI) there is no need to set up the audio interface. Or am I missing something?
Yes, you are correct. I state in the video at about 1:30 that it is connected directly to the computer with a USB cable and does not go through the interface.
Hi, can you have your interface setup with monitors hooked up to it and also have the Akai just usb direct into the computer but still hear the sound from the monitors? Thanks
@@sheldonswan45 So if your monitors are connected to your interface I think you would want to set your audio device in Reaper to be the interface. Then choose the Akai as the input for the track you're using.
Am I the only person that cant get my head around this? Thanks for taking the time to make this video, but its about the 4th one ive watched and Im still not able to use the Akai MPK Mini's pads with MT Drums in reaper. I might just buy an old 8 track machine with knobs and sliders, things were so much easier then.
@@jodymarks4461 A while later I managed to get it working but I couldnt hear it, I can see the peak limit bars going up and down and I saved a wav file and can hear it playing back!! I di have headphones on but I think I need to plug my audio interface in and maybe tha will fix the problem, ill try it later.
Dude! Thank you. I've been at it for hours. I needed to change drivers! You are the only video that helped!
Fantastic! Glad it was helpful, thanks for the feedback.

Hey, thanks for making this! It absolutely helps, as I wait for my Mini to be delivered.
You’re welcome! Glad it’s useful!

Thanks. I was confused by you mentioning that you had set up the audio interface, because that is not needed for the transmission of MIDI information.

Great video, although I wish your mouse pointer wasn't hidden.
Thanks! Yeah I don’t like that either, I didn’t realize it until after recording.

I think so, yes! As long as your DAW knows the correct input & output.
@@jodymarks4461 do you play the akai whilst hearing it through studio monitors ever? If so, what do you have your reaper audio settings set to?

7:10 cant you do that from within the vst itself? key mapping inside the vst
Yeah I think that's true. The interface looks the same if you use it that way from within your DAW.
ive getting this repetitive hiss when i use the plugins from akai that i downloaded
Maybe drivers need to be updated? Something in your DAW? Not sure...
Getting it out of the box and sounding like Timbaland hit too close to home 😅
Ha...if you ever get a chance to watch his Master Class do it, he's awesome.
