- It's been four weeks since he left home and nothing yet has prepared him for what he will find today! Come along with me as I travel back into the 18th century and experience what it might have been like to live and journey all the way from Tennessee to the Ohio Country to start a new life!

After 15 hours of editing, not counting travel time to locations or filming time, here it is...Episode 5 - Terror On The Trail - 1790's Survival Series! If you enjoyed it, please leave me a thumbs up and a comment (Or a thumbs down if you didn't) Thanks for watching!
One question. If the old man's cache had been there for two years, wouldn't the foodstuff have been eaten by bugs, mice, and such? Maybe even the moccasins in the bottom of the pack? Or was it all sealed away well enough to protect it all?
BTW, excellent job. Thanks!
The waxed canvas and the way it was stored would have protected it for the most part. It is possible of course that mice could have eaten through it, but thankfully that didn't happen in this instance. Items were often cached in such places. I understand that in huge hollow trees in Canada they have occasionally found bags of tobacco seeds cached there over two hundred years ago. Thank you for watching, for your support and for the question!
Question this is not the end of the series I hope. I actually enjoy the historical fact that you have layed out. But I would like to point out the fact that you have showed us one very important fact about life in the 1700's up 1960. What is the fact, that people in the past were more fit than people today. And they only ate healthy meals and fewer of them. And they survived. May have been hungry but they were healthy, some were obese do to lack of adventure. I wish this world would return to the old days where there isn't a McDonald's taco bell..... on every corner and we're forced to hunt for something to eat. Glad I found this channel sub'd
Thank you so much. I do intend to continue filming for some time in this series. People were indeed more fit and capable in that era and on up even as you say into the mid 20th century. Thank you for watching and for your subscription, welcome aboard!
@@WayPointSurvival Looking forward to next few films. I was really enjoying this and I feel the UA-cam following will get bigger and better. Love the look into the past , the old ways ( which were normal ways back then) I loved how every item was carefully wrapped up or had its own little leather bag. It seems very carefully studied and then passed on to the viewers. I would give it a very high score in entertainment and History. / Subscribed :) I will wait for that bell to ring, but take your time, no rush. Quality over Quantity // ps I have a musket ball maker, very old, I found it in an attic I was working on. Piece of History ( I'm In Ireland ) Yes we had Muskets too :)
Wow!!! I'm a 40yr old man and believe me when I tell you that this little presentation took me back to when I was 3 or 4yrs old, watching shows similar to this style, during winter time, curled up on the couch with a blanket, early in the mornings. I can't remember the exact shows, but I just traveled back in time to when life was so simple. And when t.v. was not trying to shove wicked ideologies down children's throats. Thank you for that sir. And may God bless you.
Thank you so much for watching the series and may God bless you and yours as well!
This was a great episode. Keep them coming. Really enjoy this series.
Thank you! Will do!
Some true Jeremiah Johnson stuff here! Love it. Good narrative.
Indeed. Thank you for watching!
Really, really enjoying this series! And learning a few things, too! God bless.
Great! Thanks for watching and God bless you too!
Outstanding . Modern people are so far removed from the realties of that time period and the struggles of their every day life . Looking forward to the next leg of the journey. Have a great day
Thank you, my friend!
Great episode. People may not understand that scavenging off the dead was not an uncommon thing for the time period. A lot of times if they could locate family they would return the items to them. If not they would keep it and use it themselves. Sometimes what they found could be the difference between life and death for them.
Very true! Thank you so much for watching, my friend!
Watching this with a cup of tea ,,,,,love it.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thank you so much!
@manofkent,. What a lovely way to spend the day. Here in the Midwest in NE Ohio on a wet day on March 30, 2024. Good on you Mate. All the best and may God bless. Will be getting myself a cup of tea shortly, at your suggestion. Stay safe across the "pond." And Happy Easter.
@@dalehood1846 you too mate 👍🍻
After a long hard day I can finally sit down and watch the new episode. This is genuinely one of my favorite UA-cam series. The hard work you put in clearly shows and is greatly appreciated. Thank you for the great work
Thank you so much!
Well now that was an interesting twist. Well thought out way to show more pioneer items as well as the adventure storyline. Excellent work. And now I have to research sulfur splints! Thank you!
Thank you so much, glad you liked it!
An interesting plot twist. After rifling through the earthly possessions of the late and unfortunate Mr. Cain, we had all better hope he wasn't also afflicted with the pox as that will cut this series a bit shorter than expected lol. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Right? That would be unfortunate for sure! Thank you for watching!
That's a very interesting point and twist indeed.
Current events have made many newly aware of the phenomenon of disease and "pox".
I'd love to learn more about people's perceptions & thoughts of science of the era as well as the fake news, and snakeoil etc of the time.
It would be tricky to convey in 2021 as aspects and realities will inevitably upset the emotionally unregulated folks who evangelize their child-like tantrums and toxicity, not unlike a pox of olde but I digress.
🇺🇸
Indeed. Unfortunately for those days, medicine was extremely primitive and many folks died unnecessarily. And, it is true, that there were lies and deceptions and much snake oil around. At least, they didn't have rapid ways to spread false information.
it would be fine pox would not last for 2 years on a surface
Very true. It would have been long gone especially as the flesh was gone and the body reduced to just bones.
Fantasic Jim loveing this whole series . I guess this would be a senario that could happen .that Knapp sack find would be awsome in this situation
Thank you. Folks often cached their supplies in those days so the find wouldn't be that unusual.
This episode brings a whole new meaning to "Leave No Trace". On the frontier at that time you didn't want to leave any sign that you had been there. If you did someone might decide to track you. You covered up as much of your tracks as possible and especially obscured camp locations. Good series.
Thank you so much. Glad you're enjoying it!
Ephraim Cain’s Candle has a nice lyrical ring to it. Enjoyed this episode too. I love that Mr. Bender prays to God often on his journey. I can only imagine what life was like back then. Your episodes are a nice escape from my modern world.
Thank you so much, glad that you're enjoying the episodes!
I'm late getting to watch a lot of the 1700 series, but I want to give you a million thanks sir! With all the crazy going on in the world, it is a blessing to be able to take my mind back to a simpler time and forget just for a few minutes. God bless and take care!
Thank you so much for watching the series no matter when you get around to watching them. I really appreciate the views and all your kind words. God bless you too!
Absolutely great series, future as a Netflicks film! Maybe before lighting the fire he should have wormed out the ball and charge in the pistol, cleaned pan and touch hole ,replaced the flint, checked the action and reloaded! Also lot of smoke from the fire too much green wood? Goin get your hair lifted! Great imagination !Looking forward to the next one for sure,
Well, he doesn't have the right size worm for the pistol etc. The smoke is from all the dampness and humidity in the woods. Hope to keep my top knot for sure. Thanks for watching!
Netflix
I really like this series!! I appreciate the hard work you put into the videos. Your definitely setting yourself apart from other bushcraft channels. History of the frontiersman always interested me.
Thank you so much, that really means a lot!
Hi James. Thank you for another intersting presentation. I particularly likes the letter at the end with the 1790s wording. Stays safe. ATB. Nigel
Thank you so much, my friend!
James, you can't understand how much I appreciate this series! You are bring to light a past that many people know very little about. Few truly understand the hardships of life in that era. Thank you!
Thank you so much for watching and for all the kind words, I truly appreciate it!
Verry enjoyable. I was missing this.

The adventure continues. An excellent storyline, well written, and very good production work. Keeps the viewer coming back for the next episode. Than you for your hard work on this series. Tennessee Smoky
Thank you so much, and I'm glad that you're enjoying the series!
I truly love watching this old-school stuff, like your Nathaniel Massie series or the Scottish series of Fandabi Dozi. Our ancestors were no dumb sort ... :)
Thank you for watching, glad you are enjoying the series!
Bravo- Awesome episode, really love the detailed description of the items of everyday life and the performance. Really paints a picture. A great episode 👏 please keep em' coming!!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Great story telling. Thank you,
Thank you!
Your time and work in making this series is greatly appreciated. When the series is complete it would be awesome to be able to watch it again but as a movie. God bless and stay safe.
I hope to do that eventually. Thank you for watching!
Best video. It's been a long time since I seen one like this. God bless 👍👐👍
Thank you so much. Hope you like the rest of the series as well!
Started watching this series. I know the production may not be the highest quality but the story line, camera angles and period correct acting/gear is amazing! Got me to spend the night tonight outside on my property going through my gear and picking what I would need for an overnight even though I'm right outside my back door! Appreciate your videos, simple "hacks" and full length videos. Keep it going sir!!
Thanks so much! I'm certainly not a professional so I just did the best I could with the production.
I love this channel and this series!
Thank you so much!
A big 👍! Excellent episode! Can’t wait for the next episode! Thank you!!
Thank you so much, filming is ongoing and I hope to have the next episode out in a couple of weeks or so.
Thanks for making the video and, being as much as possible, historically accurate. It's a labor of love to be sure. 🇺🇸🙂
Indeed, and thank you so much!
This series is better than most of what is on tv..wait, no, its better than anything on tv!. Immensely enjoyable, we appreciate all the effort involved.
Thanks so very much!
Another great installment in the series! Thanks for your hard work on this.
Thank you for watching!
You have done an awesome job in your presentation of this 1790’s era on the frontier
Thank you so much!
This episode popped up on my UA-cam feed - and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Had never seen a tinder box used before - and after the February winter storm here in Texas, a lot of this feels totally relevant today... ⭐
Thank you so much for watching, and glad you enjoyed it!
I'm really enjoying this series, well done. I am also a "Historical Trekker" and have made and use gear that is as period correct as possible. It is just plain fun making and using this type of gear. Looking forward to episode 6.
Thank you so much. It is indeed a lot of fun learning about the gear, making it and using it!
It’s almost like reading a book but with you reading it to me!❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Excellent episode! Keep up the great work brother. This is a great series.
Thanks! Will do, my friend!

Noooooooooooooo! It's over. Haha

Thank you, much appreciated!
Great video!
Extremely thorough, and very enjoyable to watch!
I can’t help think that there could be a prequel of Ephriam Cane’s adventures, one day 🤔☺️
Thank you. That would be interesting for sure!
Wow! Thanks for including us in your story. The things we take for granted in order just to survive. Keep them coming! Mike
Thank you, will do!
Another amazing installment in the series! You are doing such a fantastic job with this one James! I could see this being watching in a classroom for an American History class one of these days! Thumbs up all the way!
Thank you so much, brother. I really appreciate all the kind words and the support. It is indeed my hope to teach and generate some interest in history.

Just finished the 5th episode in the 1790s survival series and man in Litton the edge of my seat James!!! So well done in your editing and just how you captured the beautiful scenery. I hope he makes it to Ohio country. I can not wait to finish up the series and what becomes of James of the Bender family!!!!!
Excellent! So glad that you are enjoying it!
Man I sure do love your videos! I have yet to find any that are not clean & honest about who you are & what you believe in. Out of all the video's I watch on UA-cam, yours is top notch & that's what keep me coming back. Keep up the great work! And may God Bless You in all you do!

Best episode yet. Thank you .
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
Another great episode! The travels really do seem so real when they are not tomahawks and gunpowder all the time. I enjoy reading diaries of travelers from the period like Nicolas Cresswell, and this has an authentic feel. Thanks!
Thank you so very much, I consider that to be a great compliment. There will be a little action in the next episode, but generally speaking it's not what the story is about overall. Thank you for watching and for all your kind words!
This series is great
Thank you, glad you're enjoying it!

Thank you so much, brother! Episode 6 is on the way!
Enjoyed the video. I appreciate all the time and energy you put into the videos. I learn things that I then incorporate into my “living history” impressions.
It’s a great combination. Bushcraft skills, survival tactics, and practicing historical living.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, my friend!
Very cool video brother thank you for sharing your adventure with us 🎚🇺🇲👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Well done! You take things to the next level from stoves to clothes, please keep them coming! Thank you so much.

This series is awesome! Love it! Please keep the story going!!!!
I hope to do so. Thank you for watching!
Another great video👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
great work, hope you can get some attention to this stuff, this would make a great TV show. but sometimes its more fun to do things on your own so you don't lose creative control! thanks for telling the story of early midwest settlers!
Thank you!
X marks the Spot,, a cunning twist.🤔👍
Thank you for watching and glad you liked it!
James, another interesting video in this series. It’s a good story of the old frontier and very enjoyable. I just finished reading “Last of the Mohicans”. It’s a little difficult to read as it is written in the American language of 1826, but that adds to the character of the book. It takes place about 50 years before your trip, but has the frontier flavor like yours. Interesting interplay between the various Indian tribes and the white characters. I didn’t see the twist in your story coming, but his cache was a very lucky find for you. Some interesting items. I’m looking forward to future videos in this series.
Thank you so much, glad you're enjoying the series!
That corn meal on the fire looks like a delicious and satisfying meal. I love mush. Some don't care for it, however, I find it a warming and satisfying meal, especially when fried crisp on both sides. I really like it with maple syrup on it. Good anytime of the year. Thank you so very much again for all of your hard work. Very appreciated.
You're welcome!
Excellent! Well done, & your time and efforts are appreciated. Thanks for sharing...
Thank you for watching!
This was freaking awesome bro really great!!
Thank you so much, glad you liked it!
What a GREAT episode! I love the early and vintage camping and survival details.

Thank you so much, glad you liked it!
@@WayPointSurvival LOVED IT, Awesome job
Great as always. Look forward to the future episodes
Thank you so much!
Nice story and trek. Thanks for showing us. Take care.
Thank you!
Still enjoying this well made series. It was wonderful hearing the much-beloved hymn "Leaning On the Everlasting Arms" as background music at the beginning of the video.
I do have to say I am a bit disappointed in our hero not burying the skeletal remains, but of course he can be forgiven because of fear of becoming a victim himself. I appreciate that you are making this historically accurate -- showing the very real danger that a wilderness traveler would be in from Indians and other lawless people during that time period.
Very true!
I learn something new with ever video in this series. I’d never heard of sulphur splints as a fire making resource. It’s hard to imagine the constant dangers and hardships these men faced in their travels in those days. We head to the woods now to get away from it all and enjoy nature. You couldn’t let your guard down for a second back then and every decision you made could have life or death consequences. Thanks so much for all the effort and work that goes into making these videos James. Very well done!!
Thank you, brother. I really do appreciate it!
Another wonderful video. Thank you.
Thank you, much appreciated!
Love the attention to props
Thank you so much!
Just found your channel today. Been watching this whole series, excellent job!! Cannot wait for the next episodes. I too have done many historical reenactments and I'm a Blacksmith. I've worked as a Blacksmith for the National Park Service as well doing restoration and recreation work specializing in period 18th and 19th century hardware. I really appreciate the time and research you've put into these videos. I've subscribed to your channel !!
Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying the series and welcome aboard!
I really truly enjoyed this. I would love to see him do a series of the old west. Showing the life and times of a cowboy's life and travels.
Thanks so much!
Great short stories
Thank you so much!
Well Pilgrim, you tell quite a tale, by golly!
Thank you so much!
love it love it! reminds me of watching Daniel Boone in the early 60s☺️🙏
Glad you're enjoying the series!
A well done episode thanks for putting it all together. I urge anyone who is interested in history to try a flintlock, you had to be extra brave to set foot into enemy territory thus armed. 👍
Thank you and glad you enjoyed it!
Those sulfur splints are amazing must haves, never tried that method before.
Yes, they really are a neat item to have. Thank you for watching!
Really been enjoying the series. Awesome video my friend
Thank you so much!
Very nice! Thank you for all of the work that goes into these stories. Hope to see more!
Thank you, working on the next episode this week!
Again I am very impressed thankyou for the effort . As I am unable to donate funds my gratitude will have to do.god bless keep up the good work.
Thank you so much!
Awesome i loved this.

Thank you so much James for all the time, effort and expense you put into this series. I joined your patreon and hopefully others will as well to help you to continue to produce such authentic and wonderful videos to learn from and enjoy. It is a blessing to go back in time and see history come alive through your videos. God bless you. Looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you so much. I really do appreciate the support as these videos are quite expensive to produce in time as well as props. So glad that you are enjoying the series and welcome aboard!
Loving this series keep them coming and thank you for a little entertainment
Thank you for watching and glad you are enjoying it!
I had to hit the like button only because there is no love button. What a great and unexpected twist in the plot. Can't wait for the next episode. Thanks for doing these.
Thank you so much, glad you're enjoying the series!
Love these old time videos. Who knew they could record in color back then.
Right? Thank you for watching!
Really loving this series, thanks for sharing.
