I think the Gerber Armbar Drive would meet your minimum requirements, but obviously not as many additional tools as some SAKs.

Ooh I disagree with you on the caplifter not being neccessary, I'm sitting next to 2 empty Heineken bottles. Caplifter and scissors are essential for home use.

As a new father I am now pretty conscious carrying anything larger than a 58mm Victorinox. And for some reason I keep coming back to my trusted minichamp. But I keep a Swisstool spirit on very close by for small home repairs.

The Super Tinker is a great choice for sure. I might even opt for the deluxe version for the pliers. I have arthritis in my thumbs and a little set of pinchy-pulley pliers are a helpful thing for me. Great video as always.

Hi Anne! You have no idea how good your videos are!! I know you are just putting out videos fast during this 10 day period. The quality and content is still excellent with less stress for you. Hopefully, this will help you see your enthusiasm, passion and delivery is what makes your videos great to watch. I love this idea on EDC around the house addition. I have to agree scissors need to be included. People seem to love the compact, and most are hoping for a cadet with scissors. I agree totally about the 3 D screwdriver. I truly think if SAK made this knife you are thinking about, it would eliminate a lot of models they produce. We have already seen 1 purge this past year. Thank you, Jeff

Firstly, incredible video! And yes, I strongly believe in this as well! I have an “always on me” SD classic that is exactly that - whether I am leaving the house, or hanging out in my jammies, I have my classic. I can’t tell you how many times a day I have used it, pretty much everyday for the last 13ish years (yep, the same classic for 13 years). Like, an extraordinarily useful tool to carry. I have literally been thinking about this a bunch lately so thank you for that awesome vid!!! 💜

Interesting discussion. When i read the title i did think of something different: I have plenty of pocket knives and 2 SAKs in certain places around the home.
But there's no multitool or pocket knive i specifically put in my pocket for "at home use".
On one hand, i am way too lazy to change tools depending on the question of: do i leave the house or not?, and on the other hand: at home is where i don't need to carry one. As i mentioned at the beginning, at home is where i really don't one on me, as there's plenty of tools and multitools always at hand.
I still do have one in my pocket most of the time due to my normal clothing, but if i change into sport shorts or sweat pants for some reason, there's no multitool i put in my pocket as i don't leave the house anyways in that clothing.
My EDC multitool stays in the normal trousers/pants from putting them on fresh out of the wardrobe until putting them into the washingmachine.

Hola Anne & gracias for this video. I thought I was alone because for years I carry a “HOME EDC”. At home I always carry an Explorer with a small Olight (3E EOS) hanging from the key ring. I find it very useful.

Happy Friday Anne, thanks for the new video. I have for almost 20 years had a Home Tool Kit of Victorinox Multi-tools that are IMO too large for pocket EDC but ideal for repair & maintenance around the house. The SAK's currently in the kit are:- the 91mm Cybertool 34 M, the 91mm Handyman, the 91mm 'Marlboro' Troubleshooter*, the 91mm Deluxe Tinker, the 85mm Evolution S52*, the 93mm Alox Electrician and the Victorinox Compass Tool* (which includes a Compass, a Ruler in cm and inches, a Spirit Level,a Thermometer in ºF and ºC and a Magnifying glass). Even though I have duplication of a number of tools I often find it handy in those cases where I need 2 small pliers to grip & tighten/undo little fiddly nuts & bolts. *Note that the Troubleshooter, S52 and Compass Tool are discontinued items. Such a great question. My SAK Midnight Manager is a useful and so small I forget it’s in my pocket. The Leatherman Wingman is a small multi-tool that has a decent tool set for light stuff around the house. The Leatherman Squirt is a nice option also but small like the Manager. I like the SAK Mountaineer with plus scales. The Leatherman Skeletool CX would be useful. None of these options are inexpensive though. Something as simple as the SAK Waiter with the addition of a micro screwdriver is inexpensive with just enough tools to be helpful.

Thanks for the video! Glad to stumbled over your channel! I can really relate to the problem-solving -thinking on the go, whithout having to much or too little tools in the pocket. the most important thing for me is to carry a toolset that i don't forget to carry or i really don't mind carrying. I fully agree with you opinions, but I really thought this would be already common sense, to carry something that can help in this little situations, but on the other side I might be too involved in this edc tool carry bubble to realise , its still not that self-evident for many😄
I would go so far too say that, in comparison to the super tinker the compact would be another great choice, although a bit pricy. But you have the best compromise of tools and carry space for a 91mm SAK. Ultimately I think, nothing beats the 54 mm product line in regards of the topics you mentioned.

Believe it or not, I've been using my Leatherman PS Squirt for 13 years around the house, at my Mom's and outside. It's always in my pocket. It's a bit beat-up looking, but that gives it character. I don't remember the last time I had to reach for pliers or screwdrivers. Of course, these are for small tasks but that's all I ever actually have to do.

  • @LarryGarfieldCrell

I largely agree with your criteria, though I would add a nail file/cleaner to the list, as well as a pen.
Which is why my "any time I'm awake" carry is now a Victorinox Manager. (I had to get it off ebay because Victorinox can't keep it in stock for some reason.) It has a philips, small flathead, scissors, nail file, tweezers, and a pen, plus a tiny knife I almost never use. I rarely need the large flathead, and if I do, turning the nail file sideways works well enough in many cases, if the screw is on the surface and not too tight. And it's small enough to forget I have it in my pocket (on a deep carry clip), and complies with local knife laws. 🙂
I do miss the parcel hook from my Explorer, interestingly enough, as I do use that from time to time to take out the trash. (The plastic handles like to dig into my fingers, and I've even injured my hand that way once. The hook solves this problem.) But otherwise the Manager is serving me very well.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  7 місяців тому +1

Ooh that is very interesting! And a really great EDC. I think it’s not in stock because it’s discontinued, though. I’ve done the same thing for larger flatheads - it works well enough sometimes!
The Manager is next level EDC. I have a rambler on my keychain, minus the blade because of where I work. I use it all the time!

Probably too expensive: Victorinox Mini Champ. I’ve carried it 10+ years and use it daily. When purchased: about $34; now it’s $47. I did add the Nextool Knight multitool to my EDC. It’s a great tool: small but robust. It’s scissors are amazing. It comes in under $25. Even when I’m in gym shorts at home, these two are always in my pocket.

Love my Victorinox compact for EDC and carrying with me around the house. Blade mainly for opening boxes and cutting rope, scissors for opening coffee bags, kitchen stuff and anything that requires precision. And finally the cap lifter for opening beers at gatherings. I seldom use the parcel hook, but it comes in handy when I need to pull something that I can’t with my fingers. The Tweezers have saved me a couple of times from big and small splinters, where as the toothpick I mainly use for cleaning or reaching for something in small spaces. Got saved by the wine opener once!

My at home multitool is a Sog Powerpint. I carry it in a little holster on my belt because I use it so often. Because it has a bit driver, it's also my every day carry to take care of anything I need when I'm out. To that end I pair it with a Dewalt flip and switch, which gives me a great driver with multiple bits, and a jigsaw blade that also fits in the bit holder. If I'm at home I'm going to grab more comfortable tools for something I need those extras for, but out and about that and some wire will get me through just about anything.

I carry the same thing as I do for work, home, days out. When I get dressed, it goes in my pocket, as part of my routine as putting socks on. Swiss champ all day everyday. Used to be the Handyman, but when my wife lost it on our wedding day she bought me the champ as a present to make up for it. Don't notice the heft at all in jeans, but I've a belt pouch if I need it, but usually don't wear it because I don't like having a knife on show.

  • @paulstevens1493
    @paulstevens1493 11 місяців тому +1

Yes! Exactly. Since I work from home, the “at home multitool” is really my main multitool. And for the last year I’ve been using the Signature for that. It’s so light it’s basically invisible in the pocket, especially attached to the Rovyvon A8. I keep other multitools in my car or backpack, but the Signature is all I need for 95% of my day to day life. I use all the tools on it regularly, and it’s only occasionally that I need to go get another multitool or dedicated tool, unless I’m doing some major project.

Anne, this brings to mind our discussion about the EDC math formula, still a viable and relevant conversation topic. As an EDC multi tool I have my mini Swiss Champ. I seem to use the small Phillips head quite often, same with the scissors and nail file. I also carry the Victorinox nail clippers because the other ones are always missing.🤔
I’m thinking you’re going to need to break or burn something before the year ends 😂

I prefer the larger Huntsman (likely because it was my first SAK 50 years ago), because of the things you include - scissors a must - but I have also used the saw and corkscrew mayb times over the years. Good video.
Also: A plural tantum is a noun that only occurs in the plural and does not have a singular counterpart. It ends with a plural affix such as the "s" in trousers and scissors. Tantum is a Latin word which means "only" and plurale is Latin for "plural," so the literal translation of the term is "plural only." It is often referred to as "plurale tantum."

My favourite carry around the house is the Climber Light . This was the winter magic SAK from a few years back. I find i use the little flashlight frequently and the other tools cover almost all those spur of the moment fixes that pop up. It's a special edition so doesn't qualify as a budget SAK however. A bit of a luxury but i don't mind spending extra for an esthetically pleasing yet very functional and versatile tool. Merry Christmas :-)

  • @SmallHoleInTheForest
    @SmallHoleInTheForest 11 місяців тому

I know it's probably too bulky for most people, but my answer, as always is the Champ. In my pocket from the time I wake up until I go to sleep, and even sometimes after that! (not recommended to sleep with a Champ in your pocket, trust me). I love the Climber and consider it the minimum SAK for reasonable use. For not much more bulk, you can have the Ranger which adds not only scissors and the saw like the Huntsman, but also has a file which is extremely handy around the house. I keep a Leatherman Micra on my desk, mostly for the nice little scissors it has.
And "scissors" is plural, there is no singular form of the noun. You could say "pairs of scissors" if you wanted to make it clear that there is more than one.

Great video! I think for me I'd use my Gerber Suspension-NXT. I originally bought it to carry daily but as I added more things to my EDC I scaled that back to a SOG PowerPint to save space/weight. So I've already got the Gerber Suspension-NXT around the house. But I think it'd be pretty perfect for what you're describing. Good toolset, maybe a little more than you want for EDC out of the house, and reasonably priced. I got mine for around $30.

I'm a weirdo who belt-carries a substantial multi-tool almost 24/7, but were I not I would consider the SOG Powerpint. I feel like I can't be without pliers and these ones are really effective for their size. Pliers save my fingers from unnecessary hardship; they're an augmentation I'm so used to having that going without them feels like going without my thumbs. Deluxe tinker would also be a very good fit for me; pliers are nice and strong though the wire cutters are small and slightly on the soft side. I much prefer the scissors on the Victorinox over the SOG. My top choices would actually be the Leatherman Bond and Curl but those are only light and compact by my own very skewed standards (I've spent a few thousand hours lugging around a Leatherman Surge).
My priorities are pliers and a couple screwdrivers, a file so I'm constantly reminded to keep my fingernails tidy, and a knife for opening packages. Outdoors I absolutely require scissors and actually value them over having a knife at all, but in a home it should never be hard to find a pair of scissors close by so they're not strictly necessary for me.
My grandfather's round-the-house tool has been a Leatherman Supertool 200 for a very long time. Seems like total overkill and I think he's never once used the wood saw, but it gets the job done and keeps the toolbox in the closet gathering dust. He's got huge hands so the size starts to make a bit more sense.

I left a comment referring to an at home multi tool a little while back, and like in that comment i gotta go with the swiss champ. My at work tool is the leatherman p2, soon the Arc, because of the bigger pliers and one handed operation. The champ is always in my pocket out of work tho, although there are a few tools i don't use on it. If i was gonna get another, or recommend one, I'd have to go with the deluxe tinker, because it has all the tools you pointed out, plus the small pliers which are a must for me. I use the pliers nearly every day, whether it's to get a better grip on something or to grab something hot. For example, I have a wood stove to heat my patio and often use the pliers to pick up small hot coals that fall out when putting a piece of wood in.

Try the LEATHERMAN CURL! It's sort of 1/2 or 3/4 of a wave. It is missing the serrated blade, & the saw. It is missing the locking blade and locking file. It has a blade & file, but they snap into place, rather then lock. The pocket clip is stronger then the wave. The Curl is $70, but it's a REALLY NICE tool! IMHO

I have been contemplating using a belt holster to carry something larger in circumstances like this. The main tool I need is pliers or preferably locking pliers. Are there any good multi tools that have locking pliers and aren’t terribly expensive? The other alternative would be needlenose Vice Grips which I find have the most useful variety of gripping functions.
Currently the other tool I carry when doing carpentry is just barely a multitool. It is a Milwaukee utility knife that has a bit driver on the back. Being able to open and close it’s blade one handed is important when working with wood.

Amazon had the Super Tinker for $25 a while back, so I picked one up. I think that it must have been mislabeled as a regular Tinker. I would still say that the Pioneer X is my favorite SAK, but the Super Tinker seems to find its way into my pocket most often.

I want a nail file on it and a box cutter would be more useful to me than a can opener, so I think a Companion is perfect (it even has a pen). I hope for regular scales and a lower price. I recently got a Cadet and one with scissors (and a box cutter) would be fantastic (so an Alox Companion).

Hi Anne. I have the Climber but always missed the 3D Phillips. The corkscrew works great for untying stubborn knots, holding I micro driver or fire starter but for everyday task it wasn’t that useful. Ended up with a Deluxe Tinker and found the pliers most useful despite their diminutive size. I know that “bust” some of your criteria on price and size but I find it useful. So let me ask, if I may, why these criteria? For at home I personally don’t care how big the tool is because I am at home. Though I regularly carried the Deluxe out side the house, I offered reach for my Pioneer X for outside the house because of the smaller size and less weight especially in the summer. Second since I am home I have a variety of tools at easy access. One of my most used the recently discontinued Leatherman Crunch. No, I don’t wear on me but it always just a few steps away. I was kind of surprised when this went the direction it did. I was thinking “Surely Anne’s going to bring out the Swiss Champ because of how useful she finds it around the house!” So are you looking for the most convenient size with the most functionality so you will carry it around? Just curious, no right or wrong here. Thanks

For a few months I’ve been carrying an Executive as my at home multitool (I keep a Handyman in my backpack for going out). I was surprised to find the orange peeler became my most used tool. The flathead screwdriver on the end has worked for every screw I needed it (the end of the nail file is supposed to be a nail cleaner I think but I use it as a 2D phillips and it works great). It’s a great package opener, much better and sturdier than the mini champ’s orange peeler. They may not be the cheapest or easiest to find since being discontinued but an Executive is worth the investment. I just wish it has a pen instead of the toothpick.

Sadly that model is discontinued! I have one of those too and have used it extensively for some time, but when you look now, there's a different (one of the even smaller ones) now called executive and it lacks the orange peeler and the second blade if i remember correct.

@@nirfzyes they call it Executive 81, very confusing names. I think the Executive 81 has the same tool set as a Classic (standard not SD) in the same size as the Executive. There were a few more similar ones in the 74mm range but those have been out of production for decades. I think one was called Director and had alox type scales. Those are rather expensive and hard to find.

I’ve carried some sort of knife (when I could) since my Father bought me my first one at the age of 6 nearly 50 years ago.
This topic can be very broad and I think that some sort of Victorinox is the best option for edc for common tasks for the majority. A minimalists toolbox if you will. They truly are difficult to beat. I’ve seen people accomplish impressive tasks using only a SAK. My problem is that I fix everything thus I need “all of the tools” or I think I do. This makes for a bulky SAK in my pocket. Should I carry it, probably but I’m a traditional knife kinda guy so I always have one on me…Always! Jmho!

In fact I leave it there while I sleep and still never think about it. If the tool had to go in my pocket I'd be carrying the super tinker. Or, at the higher price point, the Fieldmaster for the addition of the saw and hook.

Nowadays I only have an Alox Classic in my pocket when I'm at home.
I used to carry a Pioneer, Pioneer X, Cadet, Small Tinker... But as I have these "full size" SAKs lying around pretty much everywhere anyway (not further than a few steps away), I'm fine with just this very small and super light weight tool.
I can open up a letter or box with the blade, I already fixed a table and even the vacuum cleaner with the screw driver, the file is good for quick nail care, and I cut all kinds of things with the scissors (from labels on clothes to bags of candy).
If I wasn't in love with colored Alox, I would probably carry a Cellidor Rambler instead, which adds more functions but is still very light - although a lot thicker.
But the Classic works fine for me now.
(However, I will not leave the house without a bigger SAK for sure.)

I think the minimum is: medium flatscrewdriver (like the one on the 91mm SAK can opener), knife blade (91 mm SAK size), scissors (58 mm SAK) and small pliers (they are really useful). Why the small scissors-58mm? Because the small ones can pretty much do what the large ones can do, only slower, but not the other way around. Such multitool does not exist, therefore I always carry a 58mm Rambler on me and at minimum a SAK Handyman.

I think the Super Tinker is a great choice. I also really like the Climber and find quite few "unofficial" uses of the corkscrew around the house. Another option to consider, especially if you want something smaller, is the Rambler - it's a Classic SD plus the awesome 58mm combo tool, which is a 3D Phillips that will handle #0 up to (some) #2 Phillips screws combined with a bottle opener. It's my favorite 58mm SAK and I often think of it as a sort of "Mini Super Tinker".
If you're willing to go larger than a 3-layer 91mm SAK, then it's hard to ignore the Explorer! Same scissors as the Super Tinker, of course, plus the excellent in-line 3D Phillips. The magnifying glass also has its uses around the house - especially for those "what the heck is this thing that is stuck to the kitchen counter?" moments, or doing stuff with the kids. The Deluxe Tinker is another great option at 4 layers. The pliers are small but mighty - often just the thing you need for a homework project, a quick repair, or to use as "super tweezers".
Of course, these are some of my favorite SAKs to carry outside the house too. Love the videos!

Another great review, Anne. The Super Tinker and the Climber are the ideal knives for most household tasks, with a slight edge going to the Climber. Tightening eyeglass screws is another common household task (in my home) and the corkscrew is used to store the little screwdriver. However, I am biased and still prefer my Evolution S52. It has a scissors, saw, and pliers. I use the pliers quite often. I know, it is discontinued and more expensive when you can find one, but it is my ideal at-home multitool, with the other two coming in second.

To me EDC is “around the house” and around the house I have fully functional tools in my work shop and a quick tool bag in the middle of my house. I use my multi tool all the time for the day to day and certainly don’t need the features of a bushcrafting or construction type knife in my pocket. As for criteria, scissors, 2D Phillips , blade, toothpick, pen, file are most often used. The criteria of price isn’t an issue. Here’s why, to me a SAK is super cheap at even $100. I say this because a good pair of pajamas and slippers cost that, as does a good cooking pan, athletic shoes, and an outfit of jeans, shirt, socks eta so if you want a price for something you use everyday I’m not sure I can say $25, and I’m sure some would feel $100 is to much. My choice in this category is the Signature. It won’t weigh down house clothes, and has all the requirements you listed and more. Yes the blade is small but I seam to make do quite easily with house chores and the little blade. The scissors are small but I often slide the blade along as you did demonstrating gift wrap cutting so size isn’t important. The only implement that I often use is on my new NY style Companion. The box opener rocks! I use it daily and it works much better than any blade and it has the pen and file. Pound for pound though the signature rules. I challenge anyone to carry it for a week along side your favorite and just commit to reaching for the signature first. Use your other choice only when the signature fails. I think you will find it will rarely let you down!

This is super interesting to me because I have some issues understanding the whole EDC community where they basically make bugout bags that they claim they simply do not leave home without for any reason. Most of them even spesify that its "urban edc", yet they simply cannot go to the store without at least 3 ways to start a fire. Of course, as long as you carry legal items you are fully within your right to do so, but I just dont see the big need for a tiny 2" pry bar or cargo pants that turn into a sleeping bag if you are at home or buying groceries. Nor do I understand the need for a bullet-proof, titanium pressurized ballpoint pen with a mechanical latch mechanism that can write in all conditions. Know what else can? A pencil. Costs a couple of cents.
Just to clarify, what I have an issue with here is not that people carry whatever they want, its being constantly told that im stupid if I dont do the same.
I think im the weird one out here, but I dont consider what you bring to work or what you bring when you know you will be doing something as 'everyday carry'. If I know im going to need a drill, i'll bring a drill. If I know im going to do mechanical work, I bring my Surge along with the actual tools I need etc. For whenever im not doing anything spesific though, I have a Otacle P1 and a Olight i1R 2 attached to my keychain, and still havent found any reasonable scenario (as in something where I obviously wouldnt go get the real tool) where this isnt sufficient. Oh and for around the house stuff I usually have a victorinox tinker deluxe in my pocket.
Idk but planning ahead is not the same as everyday carry in my opinion.

I recently switched from the Victorinox midnite minichamp to ROXON for my EDC/at home multitool. I generally carry and use the KS2, which comes with a pocket clip, and all of the tools except scissors lock into place and are one-handed opening. I carry the accompanying 4mm mini bit set with adapter in a Tic-Tac case. I have recently used it for multiple jobs around the house, and it works great. If I need pliers, then I carry the slightly smaller M2, which has everything the KS2 does, minus the saw blade and locking tools (the knife still locks.)
2D Philips screwdrivers are garbage. They can make a full 3D Philips without taking up much space, as the Minichamp, KS2, and M2 prove. Even more important, a full 3D Philips allows for a small adapter with various driver bits, thereby expanding the usefulness of the multitool. A 2D Philips does not.

I don't need a can opener or bottle opener as I'll have them in the kitchen where I will need them at home.
Weighs less than a Compact and has all the tools I need and disappears in the pocket. (Real shame they seem to be gradually doing away with the 84mm line)
