- Fourth and fifth rounds including the two longest jumps in history, shown back to back, by two different athletes! This was probably the best field event competition in history. Mike Powell and Carl Lewis competed against each other in the long jump at the 1991 World Championships. Lewis had a winning streak of more than 60 meets over the previous 10 years going into the meet. Both were at their best on this night which saw four of the seven longest jumps in history! For those with short attention spans, go to the 3:40 mark to see the world record jump.
I was reading my old journal from 1991 today and since I wrote extensively about the Tokyo WC I had to come and relive some of the best and most memorable moments from that summer; this historic long jump competition and also the 100m run. Man, I will never forget watching these events live and it's been twenty five years this summer, wow, how time flies.
The greatest long jump competition in history. I remember watching this when I was 10 years old!
Amazing that Lewis jumped a PB (third longest ever to this day) straight after watching someone else bag the record had wanted for years. Great competitor.
Thanks for posting a great moment in long jumping history.
You're welcome.
Dwight's commentary really complimented and made this competition so special. His reaction to Carl's 8.91 and Powell's 8.95 mimicked a true fans sentiments. IMO this is the best competition I have ever seen. Considering what a HUGE barrier this was and how both of these guys surpassed it is amazing. Lewis' series is just inhuman.
I can watch this over and over. I remember watching it live. I jumped against both of them back when I was jumping for the Oregon Ducks and they were a whole another level.
I too remember watching this when i was a kid it was past midnight during summer vacation.
I remember watching this live really late at night because it was held in Japan. Blew my mind.
That profile shot of Powell waiting for the distance to come up, then going off when it's displayed is one of the great camera sequences in big time sport. This whole comp was spine tingling.
Lewis is the greatest, we need someone like him to push the competition again. it's been lacking without him.
Over and above the World Record, this is the best COVERAGE we have gotten on American Television. No over-produced hype, just the story of the competition like we have not seen before. I've said this personally to Dwight, Mike and Carl.
This was the most biggest long jump clash of all time!! It took a massive World Record to beat Carl Lewis!! I remember watching this. Just incredible.
Broke my schools LJ record last Saturday with a jump of 22'11.25''. I'm a senior and currently ranked #1 in the State for 5A high school competition. Wish me luck next week at the state meet please :D. These guys inspire me to be a better jumper week in and week out.
Mike Powell has now held the long jump record longer than Bob Beamon did.
I think that's the greatness af a champion, to hold a record for a very long time.
@Scott Martin spot on. theres still a number of enhanced records that havent been beaten for 30+ years, yet junior records continue to progress...
You gotta remember the wr was 8.35m when beamon broke it. The same feat would be if lewis or powell jumped 9.5m
I remember watching this competition when i was in high school and then later on in my career , i had the pleasure to compete against them both in the 1996 us trials. Had no shot at beating them but it was fun and hot. Brings back memories. This was my motivational video going into college. The kings of long jumping !!!
You went to Georgia Tech, right? If you're who I think you are, 9th place at the Olympic Trials is very impressive.
@@AndrewGatt Yeah Thanks, 20 plus years later i still remember that meet like it was yesterday. It was a wonderful experience competing against all those guys. Had some of the greatest long and triple jumpers in US history at that meet. Glad to have been a part of it.
🙏
thanks for upload
I remember watching this competition. I was so excited and sad both didnt reach the 10 yard...
I was 7 watching this when it happened and never forgot how amazing it was.
It feels so good to walk up out that sand with a stadium filled to capacity cheering. Knowing you are a legend.
Mike Powell said...” when I do the long jump, I think about dunking a basketball.“. 29ft. 4 1/2 ln..... unbelievable. He gave away a good quarter of an inch on the board too.
To Curtis I too am a senior in highschool, and I have a state meet tomorrow,I'm currently ranked third in my state with a 21'2 so your 22'11.25" is a little extra motivation, thx for posting, good luck at your meet, pce brah
I remember seeing that monster jump on ABC Sports coverage in 1968! Far superior Olympic coverage than NBC has done or EVER could equal!! I agree, this is THE GREATEST RECORD in Olympic history!
Top three jumps of all time in the same competition, says it all really!!
I was 11 and Carl Lewis was a big thing at that Time ans i can remember that competition like it was yesterday !! The best long jump competition i've ever seen !! And 5 years later at the olympic games in Atlanta Lewis won the olympic title for the fourth time and Mike Powel felt in tears
If I could have picked any track meet to attend, I would have picked this one. Seeing the 100m world record go down, and then long jump world record? This long jump competition to me is the best competition battle of all time in track. Huge props to both guys.
Indeed, I saw this when it was live here in The NL Always admired Lewis but Powell came and comes across as such a nice, positive and modest guy. That long jump contest was one of the most intense matches of any kind I ever saw. You just knew this was of a standard so high it will be difficult to reach ever again. And thart is surely because Carl Lewis was doing so incredibly well AND Powells jumps, while faulty, were really far as well. Something in the air...for almost 9 meters!
I never heard of those games before. Thanks for pointing out the similarity.
Lewis and Powell jump 29 FT+. Incredible!!
All those years and competitions, finally justice was not to be denied! He deserved this win! :-)
Dwight Stones' commentating complimented this competition so well. Really made it enjoyable to watch. Best competition of all time.
The best athletics competition ever. And a fair result.
The WR jump, just perfect.
thanks for the vid. great jumps!!
What a sick series of jumps !!!!!!
the tournament of carl lewis is unreal he s beaten in only one jump but he deserved the title of long jumpers of all time 8.83 8.84 8.87 8.91 in the same tournament 0__0
Fantastic competition!
Greatest long jump competition of all time
@SeanFHoward
I think a lot of people were happy to see Mike Powell win this competition. I think they thought that Carl Lewis could be arrogant at times. Carl often spoke very highly of himself. I always respected him as an athlete though. Although he never broke the world record in the long jump, he did win the Olympic Gold in 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996. You have to respect such an amazing accomplishment.
I'm 5 years and yesterday i jumped ... well i'm still in the air, is that good ?
Work on your form
+morrisonien What do you mean?
+SmallTall i just cracked up
morrisonien yup
morrisonien hahahaha good XDDD
great commentary
I remember watching this live on television.
Me too.
I grew up in NYC in the 60s, competing in basketball and track & field. I competed against Bob Beamon in long jump and "Lew Alcindor" in basketball. :'( :'(
Stop lying you were a benchwarmer superhero at the YWCA that fantasies about being a great athlete
I got that distance, only difference is that it was triple jump
dislikes comes from people who play super Mario jumping over trolls
I agree. That's why I just had to upload this video. Usually, when the networks show a field event coverage, they suck all of the excitement out of it. They show the winning jump or throw and the final miss/foul/short throw of the next closest competitor. Where's the excitement in that? It's like they're showing highlights on the news. Sometimes they even tell you that you're about to see the winning throw or jump! They don't cover the 1500 by telling you who's going to win beforehand.
nice commentary.
I got tired of all of the "imperial system (feet and inches) sucks" comments. From now on, all such comments will be summarily deleted. Behold the power of the uploader!
Imagine how it would feel to break an athletic World Record
I broke an athletic supporter one time. Does that count? It didn't feel so good
I'm a hammer thrower, but I'd pay a thousand dollars to see this live.
It would have been exhillerating to watch this live
Lewis had three jumps over 29 ft. and still got beat.
Lewis an amazing competitor, sees a rival take the record he's been gunning for for a decade, must feel like crawling off to hide somewhere, instead immediately pulls out the third longest jump of all time...
The announcer is GREAT!!!
I remember watching this in my dorm room in college. This competition was amazing. Mike let off the HUGE jump that broke the world record, but Carl may have had the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th best jumps of all time.
It was amazing
It seems that everyone is forgetting our history. Jesse Owens' world record stood for 25 years. Given the advances in nutrition, equipment, facilities etc. Owens would be putting up 28 + jumps and maybe 29 foot jumps. Owens set three world records and tied a third in the space of one hour at the 1935 Big Ten meet.Give the man his due folks, he has to be one of the greatest of all time.
Owens was also a smoker. Incredible when you think about it
I don't think anyone discredits Owens. He's quite the legend.
This was the golden age for the U.S. in the long jump
Sure. Not everyday you see that many 29+ jumps.
USA has won Olympic gold medal since then, though.
Two possibilities. 1. Although we only see the metric sign, there may have been a computer feed for journalists that also showed feet and inches. 2. He recorded his audio commentary after the competition was over and had plenty of time to make the conversion. Keep in mind that this competition aired late at night in the United States, about twelve hours after it took place in Tokyo. The editing makes me think that it was all done before the commentary was added. What do you think?
those dislikes are from people who can jump further than that
Good luck at the state meet!
Carl Lewis was great but you can’t take Mike Powell accomplishments away from him. He was injured in competition after that and never recovered. Still a Win is a win. Is he the best Athlete , No but he is in the Books for Long Jump.
Never recovered? Didn't he win in Stuttgart '93?
This was in Tokyo. Thumbs up if you can't wait for this event in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics!!
If every jumper these days wasn't rubbish I might!
will Lwis be there?
heck I am old enough to remember and to have been fascinated by watching the first Tokyo Olympiad back in the 60s
Are you kidding? This was one of the greatest sports competitions ever in any sport. A world record had lasted for 23 years and then two different athletes surpassed it on two jumps in a row!?!?!?
alll i can say is WOW wat a cmpetition.
No. I was referring to the video that undergroundninja mentioned. Carl Lewis and Mike Powell were both awesome in the video on this page.
Powell always playing second best to Lewis Uncorks the biggest jump in history one time, and will always be remembered as a world champion and current WR holder in this event.
Well said..!! What boggles my mind though .......... is that THIS record is STILL standing..!?!? That in and of itself..... is Amazing.!! What a Competition..!
The jump is just sick. These guys had it figured out, and I think they took their secrets away with them when they retired.
Bill Crane hahaha..... Right..?!?
I'm studying this to get better at Long Jumping in QWOP on my phone.
Bob Beamon's jump seemed more explosive and higher. Powell for whatever reason reminded me of that character on "Great American Hero" the way he jumps lol
It's Dwight Stones, former world record holder in the men's high jump.
Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson are the greatest athletes the world will ever have. Carl Lewis was an all rounder: 100m, 200m, 4x100 relays, Long jump. MJ 100m, 200m, 400m 4x400 relays!
This is the best long jump event that there ever was. Powells record is now almost as long lasting as Beamons.
Start of 8th grade I did 17, that was in gym class, first time I ever tried it
I'm turning 14 years old next month but last year, when I just turned 13, we had a track and field practice and I jumped 5.60m, that's about 18.5 feet. But I still came in third for city finals, because I only got 5.20 metres. Now I can jump 6 metres. And we're having our track meet this coming Tuesday but I still feel like I'm going to do terrible.
Robert Emmiyan, USSR - 8,86m in 1987.
Анатолий Кузьмин now that lad could jump!! Not a man since that had that bounce.
I'm -3.72 years old and jumped 483928m. I lost though because I was over the board by 1 cm.
Carl Lewis, you are my hero! Absolutely my favourite athlete! Sending my love all the way from Australia xxx
fantastic human feats from both
today I jumped 18.7 I'm a freshman and hope to one day jump that far
with 1991 shoes & Faster track I wonder if Bob Beamon's 1968 jump in mexico city might have been over 9m
These dudes was really jumping 29 feet bro. Think about that
Shit's crazy
Laurie, I'm confused. Who do you love, Mike Powell, Carly Lewis, Dwight Stones (the announcer) or me?
I just started the long jump, I can dunk from the free throw line and run a 11 flat but I cant past 21 feet! During my approach should I run flat footed or jst in the attack phase?
Carl Lewis - greatest athlete of all times!
No way!
For all my metric people
C.Powell 8.95m
C.Lewis 8.91m
And Robert Emmiyan from Armenia 8.86m
4th longest jump of all time
When you jump 3rd all-time and you don't win, well that's your bad day.
jumping the 3rd best all time counters not winning and more
It was the highest-level game in the history of longjump.
Although there was also 9-m expectation, since Powell has skipped from 5-cm this side from the springboard, it is a jump of 9 m of substance!
8m95 is large record that nobody has still reached 9m.
I thought that Cuba's Pedroso, Sal Dino and others of Panama exceeded 9 m.
Black guys are the best athletes in the world
swimming says hi ......
Epic. Truly epic
@andygatt
You're right of course, his achievements were phenomenal and he probably is the greatest track & field athlete that ever lived.
if they ever do a long jump movie, it´s going to like this
Do movies have feelings?
Beamon's jump was more elegant, watch them back to back.
Buenos atletas,la lucha nunca termina
I didn't know Carl lewis jumped I just thought he ran wow he was just an all around athlete
he's actually jumper turned sprinter. he won the Olympic long jump title 4 times I believe
Imagine you jumped 29' and thought you had the gold and all your talk leading up to the competition, in a bag. Life's rough!
Are you saying the video and world championship officials got it wrong lol?
BTW Beamon's jump happened more than 50 years ago and is still the 2nd best.
And beat the previous mark by over half a metre
Was this 28 years ago? Shit. Two brilliant competitors. Awesome athletics
The most dramatic game in history ...
After watching this, it's not that unbelievable that Batman can fucking teleport across an entire room when fighting thugs in the Arkham Games.
For some reason (I cannot remember why) I intensely disliked Carl Lewis, so watching this back in '91 was a fantastic feeling.
I met mike Powell yesterday
Im 5 months old and I jump 83 feet. Is that good?
+giddyup97 It's kind of good but when I was 4 months old I jumped 84 feet.
Ife's Voice are you guys jokeing 🤔 when i was 5 mounths old i only ate slept and cryed
༻【Karma Time】༺ no they aren't joking
when was 3 months old I jumped 5 miles. is that good?
