The amazing thing about Lewis in those days was, he had to save himself for so many competitions. 100 M, long jump, 200 M, 4X100. I know there are those who were disappointed he didn't "officially" break the long jump record, but when you consider all he did at every meet, it was astonishing that he won as many competitions as he did.

@@depannistin 68 the long jump record was 27'1/2. Bob Beamon unleashed a 29 21/2. Only one person jumped over 28 feet. In 70s. Then I think another in 80 81. Lewis then was jumping 28 with ease. Conley might have hit 28. He was high 27. Then Powell jumped over 28. Twice I think. Low 28. The meet that Powell and Lewis had them pushing each other had Powell jumping over 28 5 times. So only 5 guys ever jumped over 28. 2 guys one time each. Beamon who never jumped 28 ft. Just 29 2 once. Powell and Lewis who jumped over 28 feet 100 times?

That was his technique. An olympic runner giving a 100% reaches top speed at around 80 meters. At that point they take it down a notch and maintain that speed as they cross the finish line. Carl lewis did the opposite, He'd run at approximately 90% and then time it that he crosses the finish line giving 100%. That's why he's always coming from behind when he races.

Best form I've ever seen anywhere. A notorious slow start because he came out of the blocks so gradually, always executing perfect form. Guys like Ben would jump erect and reach upright into the first 2-3 steps. Carl tended to start separating at 60, reach top speed at 80 and hold it through but (as some do) he might accelerate after reaching top speed. That describes his typical race, and it's almost exactly what happened in this final.

Carl Lewis has broken his silence on allegations that he was the beneficiary of a drugs cover-up, admitting he had tested positive for banned substances but claiming he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans.
"There were hundreds of people getting off," he said. "Everyone was treated the same."
Lewis has now acknowledged that he failed three tests during the 1988 US Olympic trials, which under international rules at the time should have prevented him from competing in the Seoul games two months later.

"Carl Lewis has broken his silence on allegations that he was the beneficiary of a drugs cover-up, admitting he had tested positive for banned substances but claiming he was just one of "hundreds" of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans.
"There were hundreds of people getting off," he said. "Everyone was treated the same."
Lewis has now acknowledged that he failed three tests during the 1988 US Olympic trials, which under international rules at the time should have prevented him from competing in the Seoul games two months later."

Let me throw out a name: Bobby Morrow, dubbed the most relaxed sprinter of all time. A Texas kid who won gold in the Melbourne Olympics, 1956. Long forgotten, but he ran a relaxed, tension-free 100 meters. That was the secret to his success. You can definitely see it in his running. Check him out. I have no doubt that Carl Lewis, Valeriy Borzov and all the great sprinters over the years studied him. Tension will kill you in any sport, not just track.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold on there Ernst. You never heard of Jesse Owens?
Jesse won 4 golds in Berlin, on a cinder track, with all the pressure of a country on him. After 1936, the next games was 1948. No telling what Jesse might have accomplished had war not interrupted the Olympics.

Not the fastest ? WHAT SMOKE U SMOKING ? he is the legend.....the greatest ever...….better than bolt......are u kidding me ? bolt could not jump. lewis broke even the world record in the long jump with 8,91second best ever (8,95 did powels) and had also the world record in 100 meters with 9,86 and he was just behind the world record in 200 meters with 19,75 at the time (19,72 was the record.)
what an idiotic comment......if lewis had bolt's body and was born in bolt's time the world record in 100 meters would be 9 seconds and in 200 meters 18 seconds while in the long jump it would be 10 meters.
AND U SAY HE WAS NOT THE FASTEST ?
