Final glide into an island with a glider

- After 8 hours and 750km of gliding, I filmed the last 20 minutes final glide and landing on Île d'Yeu in the Atlantic Ocean. Since the quality of the video is not great, I decided to do minimum cutting and no acceleration of the footage. It’s a bit shaky and long, I know but I really like the calm views.

Fabulous, thanks for sharing.
Love it!
Thanks for sharing and keeping the edit simple. That looks like s a lot a bug splatters on your leading edge. Do they have a tow plane on the island or did you have to call for one to come and tow you back up? I enjoyed seeing your bare feet covered in sand. Nice way to end a long day!
Thank you! I used the engine build into the DG-400 to get back. On the way out, I took an aerotow in order to land with a full fuel tank.
@@YvesGerster That sounds like a wise use of the self launching capability.
That's awesome! But YIKES - did you motor back out of there? I don't trust my lawnmower engine so much haha! I would've motored overhead to final glide to somewhere deep onshore on the mainland. But that's just me. How did you do it?
I did it exactly like you described. The engine stoped on the first attempt to get off the island due to a blown generator-fuse. So I had to turn back, fix it and take-off again. Therefore I stayed well within glide slopes of airfields.
very nice.
by going west about 10° you lengthened your day by 40 minutes. Did you notice the longer thermal activity?
That's interesting. Going west probaly helped. Fortunately the thermals lasted long enough for me make it to the island. However, I guess that other factors like airmass and see-breeze have a much larger influence on each specific day...
How was the wind leaving the mainland? Headwind?
Rather from the north, along the coast. This resulted in a slight head-wind component, but not very significant.
