I’d never heard of Ella Fitzgerald before. I just read a post on twitter saying no one would book this woman to sing in clubs bc she was black but Marilyn Monroe offered to come to a nightclub every night and sit in the front row if they let her sing. Using her privilege for good. I hear you Ella. I’ve never heard you sing until now but hearing you for the first time feels like I have before in a past life. Wow.

Actually the club had booked other black singers before. I think it was because she was also overweight and not a "beauty." That doesn't make it much better.

Because this song was based on the Ukrainian folk lullaby "Ой ходить сон коло вікон". While in his own description, Gershwin did not use any previously composed spirituals in his opera, Summertime is often considered an adaptation of the African American spiritual "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child", which ended the play version of Porgy.[9][11][12] Alternatively, the song has been proposed as an amalgamation of that spiritual and the Ukrainian Yiddish lullaby Pipi-pipipee.[13] The Ukrainian-Canadian composer and singer Alexis Kochan has suggested that some part of Gershwin's inspiration may have come from having heard the Ukrainian lullaby "Oi Khodyt Son Kolo Vikon" ("A Dream Passes by the Windows") at a New York City performance by Alexander Koshetz's Ukrainian National Chorus in 1929 (or 1926).[14]
I agree she painted with her voice and her canvas was what God gave her e.g., her life experiences, her resilience, her pain, her joys, her will to survive, her creativity in sharing her life by overcoming.

That's what the song is all about. The desperate longing for a better future hurts so much that not even a perfect, peaceful summer day and a calm lullaby can hold it back.
Ella was simply the best. I love the moment when she belts out "One of these mornings..." and Tee Carson looks up from his piano in surprise then in absolute admiration. This version is my favorite version of "Summertime" because it captures a humid, hazy day perfectly.
Nick Giandelia you said a mouthful nick. She was such a true master of the art of singing. My folks worshiped her when I was younger and we grew up listening to her but never realized how amazing she was. My little brother and I thought her name was Elephants Jello when we were just learning how to talk. Our folks used to chuckle at that. Now I’m introducing her music to my late 30’s daughters as an example of how good singing can be with out computers sweeting the sounds. They are appreciative of her genius now.
There will never be another Ella Fitzgerald!!! When my friends were gaga over Elvis, I was listening to the likes of Ella Sings Gershwin. How lucky I was to have a Dad who liked great music!!
Her voice was like VELVET. So smooth, rich, and beautiful. Wow, what a legend she is! I’m mesmerized by this performance no matter how many times I watch it!
Just the sheer amount of emotion Ella would put into her vocal performances (especially in this song) amazes me! Wish more ppl from my generation knew about her
Sublime! It was, when I first heard it as a 12 year old white kid growing up in the north west of England in the 1950's, and it sure is now all these years later. Ella's voice enthralled me then, and it still does now. I was not alone. Many of my friends had that same enthusiasm for the African-American singers' and their music at that time - they touched your soul like no other white singers' could. Like liquid chocolate, the words came off their lips, filled with a musical resonance born from social injustice - although, I did not know that at the time - as a young boy, I was purely taken by such wonderful music sung in such a beautiful way - thank you Ella, may you rest in peace.
William, how very ironic! My stories not too different. I'm Irish/Swedish & as soon as i saw/heard Ella, for me, there was no turning back. I have been in love with her voice, her songs, her lyrics for as long as i can remember. My Caucasian friends feel the same way too, including my Irish husband. We simply love her. Her songs actually make me feel very sexy. Especially "Summertime". My absolute favourite. I have her CD's & i have them playing in my car very often.
My father sang this to me as a child. Ella Fitzgerald. What can one say? I sat with an 80 year old welsh friend last year, an old friend of jazz singer Annie Ross who had known many singers over the years. As a teenager he’d travelled from Swansea in Wales to London to see Louis Armstrong, and later gave me his signed copy of Louis Armstrong’s autobiography. He’d known many songwriters and musicians over the years. He’d also seen many great performers sing live. We sat watching a documentary about Ella Fitzgerald. As it finished he said, with tears in his eyes, “At the end of the day she was the greatest of them all.” That’s how I feel when I hear this. Ella. An exceptional talent. A beautiful spirit. A gifted sacred songbird. Reminds me of my father’s smile as he sang to me. Ella always gets to the heart of the song. She always makes you hear the song for the first time. That’s how I feel.
Lots of competition but to me she is the GOAT. IMO she was the complete package, combining extraterrestrial musicianship and unparalleled scats with heart, soul and just a beautiful sound. ❤ 4ever.
Hi I don't know if you'll ever see this post a year later 🤗! But I too, weep when Ella sings this. I feel like I'm standing in God's house 🙏, when she sings Summertime, her voice is That exalted and pure. 🌤🐦
Absolute perfection. This is sung in 1968, the year Martin Luther King was murdered. There is a profound soulfulness she brings to this song- like a prayer. It seems quite timely today, on the first day of summer, to listen to this in the wake of #blacklivesmatter.

Что такое счастье, я понял, когда в 1966 году купил в ГДР гигантский виниловый диск со стереозаписями песен Эллы. И слушая его сейчас, я наслаждаюсь и радуюсь, как и 54 года назад (! Mamma Mia !!! ). Хотя сейчас мне немного грустно оттого, что её давно нет с нами. Мне нравится её пение, потому что она открывает нам свою душу, «по душам» неторопливо и задушевно говорит с нами или взрывается бешеным темпом песни. Великая певица !!! What happiness is, I realized when in 1966 I bought a giant vinyl disc with stereo recordings of Ella's songs in the GDR. And listening to it now, I enjoy and rejoice, like 54 years ago (! Mamma Mia !!!). Although now I am a little sad that she has not been with us for a long time. I like her singing, because she opens her soul to us, “heart to heart” slowly and sincerely speaks to us or explodes with the frantic tempo of the song. Great singer !!!
I was privileged to watch her performance in the Kennedy center for our class trip to Washington. Being a young and dumb teenager, I didn’t know who or what this person was. Boy I was impressed. Enjoyed the experience very much.
Her nickname was "The First Lady of Song." She was a virtuoso in her field. She has a talent for conveying emotion through her voice that can't be taught; she's a gifted individual.
She was my dad's favorite singer. I grew up hearing him sing her songs. Hearing her, I feel him with me. Ella is one of my favorite singers, too. I have never heard better.
Ella's voice takes our attention and the band skillfully complements Ella without trying to steal the limelight. Ella Fitzgerald should be Dame Ella Fitzgerald, one of the true masters of her craft.
Found this song by accident today,6/1/22. **SIGHS**It's the phenomenal Ella Fitzgerald singing from one of my most favorite plays: Porgie and Bess. Her voice just wraps around you, holds you & gently lulls you to sleep. Such a treasure & so glad I was already familiar with her music. This just adds to my repertoire.❤❤❤
Her singing is so beautiful. I had never listened to her until tonight but I am absolutely floored. Her singing brought me to tears. I never imagined music could be this wonderful.
One of the very few singers who remembers that this song is first and foremost a lullaby. And that band...total support of what she's doing. Damn near perfect...
One of my favorite performances of all time. You gotta sweat so you know it's real. Ella is the queen, because she feels every single note. A true artist can pierce your soul and make you feel the pain or troubles of a song, the background..
As I remember all the most famous voices ever, such as Frank Sinatra believed Ella was the greatest voice to be put on this earth! If he said that you can believe it!!
Best Ever Performance done by Ella with this song! Where she master the control of her voice like nobody's business without no effort, and seamlessly ! Wow...Love that woman!....

Really...... does a female voice get any purer than this. 55yrs later and still incredibly beautiful. Thanks Ella.
listen to Porgy & Bess LP she did w/Louis Amrstrong..the best version ever.. bar none
At 1:45 when she sings "One of these mornings" I am stunned, amazed in her voice. I love this lady!!!
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🔥
Goosebumps
So was the piano player, did you see that look he gave her, he was like, 'Bitch you betta sang!!!'
@@BaKheru piano player looked like he wanted to throw his shoe
That's what the song is all about. The desperate longing for a better future hurts so much that not even a perfect, peaceful summer day and a calm lullaby can hold it back.
Do not let these beautiful artists get lost in time
This is the best thing I've ever heard in my life
Amen to that.
Tsatsi Rugege so well sais and so true
This belongs to Mahalia Jackson!
whitney houston still the best 🥰
Única! Maravilhosa!
This is absolutely the best rendition of this song ever performed. Hands down
maybe. also like Janis Joplin's version.
If you want to hear the original classical version, try summertime sung by Renee Fleming
💯
theres a reason why they still play her pieces today like they play mozart and beethoven..
1934 by George Gershwin

She was just perfect. Perfectly in control of her instrument. Her voice was a once in a lifetime phenomenon, or maybe even less.
Janis joplin with summertime was also huge! Her voice is on an equal level with fitzgerald

@blauerpelikan what an insult.. that hippie had some obnoxious pipes but you should apologize
A goddess who once lived on Earth and left her music here
No one sings like Ella. Her voice in this song is like sugar.
My gran passed away recently and this was her favourite song she sang and now I can't stop listening to it 😢
The gold standard and the epitome of class and talent. There will never be another like Ella. Her voice is pure silk...
I can't even sing this song without breaking down!!! I miss my mom !!!
AMEN

Yes, this is one of the best versions of Summertime, but I always love Joplin's rendition.
How lucky we are that this performance has been recorded....❤
She has THE best voice. Perfect pitch, soulful, amazing. PRAISE TO ELLA!!😊
Absolutely and she does it like no one else.
For me, she has the best voice i have heard in a Woman alive or dead
Zek Papas I agree. And so elegant and classy.
I have never heard a dead woman singing but I can agree with the first part of your statement!!!
and Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington :)
Her voice was like VELVET. So smooth, rich, and beautiful. Wow, what a legend she is! I’m mesmerized by this performance no matter how many times I watch it!
Anyone still here in 2019? Still the best performance 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Absolutely!
2021
I'm here in 2019.. What a voice...
I do!
I am here, 04.01.2020
Just the sheer amount of emotion Ella would put into her vocal performances (especially in this song) amazes me! Wish more ppl from my generation knew about her
a voice like velvet, butter, moonbeams and love....
And yet raw when it needs to be: "One of these mornings..." utter control over her instrument. Genius.
This evokes an ancestral bind I can’t explain. Love her so much.
Love ❤ her too.
yes
That was a long time ago. Best wishes and good health
Funny that the band called Sublime sampled this song.
Me❤! In 2024! Ella is eternally awesome!
That vibrato was so under control, by far, she was one of the best singers capable of pulling that off. Man, she was godly.
The greatest female vocalist of the modern era. Hands down, head and shoulders above anyone else. No competition.
Aretha is right with her
She has competition. Plenty of it. Let's start with Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.
@@EPA18 not Billie Holliday but yes Sarah
@@nakitawilliams4259 Not Billie Holiday?
Lots of competition but to me she is the GOAT. IMO she was the complete package, combining extraterrestrial musicianship and unparalleled scats with heart, soul and just a beautiful sound. ❤ 4ever.
A taste of heaven is this wounderfull woman voice
This has to be the best version of this song... So beautiful... It even brings a tear to my eyes...
Hi I don't know if you'll ever see this post a year later 🤗! But I too, weep when Ella sings this. I feel like I'm standing in God's house 🙏, when she sings Summertime, her voice is That exalted and pure. 🌤🐦
For me too...the top of emotion and grace...what a splendid voice!
@@debszakormos7919a year has passed and I have indeed seen it 😊
This is almost spiritual... her voices literally raised up something in my soul! Captivating!
You hit it.
They will still be playing this 100 years from now-pure class!
I was 5 years old when this was recorded. What a voice!!! I love that she’s never in too much of a hurry… every note is so special.
Absolute perfection. This is sung in 1968, the year Martin Luther King was murdered. There is a profound soulfulness she brings to this song- like a prayer. It seems quite timely today, on the first day of summer, to listen to this in the wake of #blacklivesmatter.
I love it more lol

Wow. Her movement between notes is of heaven.
The best version of the song! you can feel every part. her voice is priceless.
No. For direct expression of the soul the best version is always that of Janis Joplin
This is the hardest song in the world to sing properly. You have to sing it soooo slowly, like floating down the Mississippi on a hot day with no current.
@@unicounici3772 i don't agree with that AT ALL!!!...the janis joplin version is nothing compare to that....here it's pure absolute heartfelt talent ...feeling.. and MUSIC
0:52, that "you're daddy's rich" line.... put the craziest goosebumps all over my body. Insane singing !
Definitely proving her voice was the strongest instrument on that stage.
Сейчас уже нет таких. Мда.

I was privileged to watch her performance in the Kennedy center for our class trip to Washington. Being a young and dumb teenager, I didn’t know who or what this person was. Boy I was impressed. Enjoyed the experience very much.
That’s so great, seems you are also a great fan of her music like me?@Diane Taylor
Musical nourishment for the soul. Ms. Fitzgerald is definitely one of the greatest voices in recorded history.

Her nickname was "The First Lady of Song." She was a virtuoso in her field. She has a talent for conveying emotion through her voice that can't be taught; she's a gifted individual.

Watching Ella Fitzgerald over and over again. Summertime is the most beautiful song from this lovely lady

She felt each and every lyric and sang each word with the upmost conviction, milking each run like butter and organically for our ears.

Nobody sings like this ... she's a truly angel.
