    • @that70sschwinn

      Nice! The Super Sport was the next level up from the Continental, with alloy rims and chromoly frame and a bigger gear ratio, making them much lighter, agile and easy to get up and go, the Kool Lemon is certainly a staple color of the 70's.

    Beautiful restoration! Feast for my eyes. 1964 I bought a brand new yellow Varsity with the black leather saddle and rode it to Jr High School. To protect the saddle I used dad's shoe polish and it looked great. When I got off the bike at school people began laughing at me because the black shoe polish had come off on my light tan corduroy pants. I had to go the rest of the day with a sweat shirt tied around my waist. Rode that Varsity for years and loved every moment. Easiest bike ever to pull a wheelie on.

    Got the same exact bike for an 8th grade graduation gift from my parents.
    They let me pick it out. Same bike, same color. Only difference is I had the bike shop put black tape on the handlebars. The extra black looked awesome.
    Rode it back and forth to my summer job for 4 years and saved almost everything to buy my first car. A bicycle is one thing, but my parents couldn't buy me a car. Too many siblings. I was lucky and grateful to even receive a brand new bicycle.
    Sometimes tough memories, but lots of good ones I'll never forget.
    Thanks Mom and Dad. I never said that enough to them.

    I have one of those exactly like yours. Mine is a 1971 model. It was in pretty good shape when I got it. All I really need to do to it was adjust the front and rear derailleurs and get the generator to work. I did need to true the spokes and install new tires. Schwinn sure made quality products back then. Now when I go to Walmart I see the Schwinn badge on the bikes but they are made in China. After I finished my bike I put about 2600.00 miles on it and it still goes along just fine. Yours is a real beauty!

    I love seeing these bikes brought back to life.. I had a 77 varsity that was stolen in high school in 1981 and I wound up getting from my dads homeowners insurance a 1981 LeTour which I still have and will always have, she needs a good cleaning and I need the foam pads on the handlebars replaced. Your Continental is gorgeous and it's motivating me to get my LeTour on the road.

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  8 років тому +1

      Thanks, glad you liked it, the Le Tours are nice lightweight bikes, you will find plenty of motivation once you get the bike on the rack and begin the restoration process, it may be hard to find the original foam handlebar padding used on these early eighty bikes, but you can certainly replace it with the standard Schwinn approved tape, you can do black or if you find a matching color, that will give it the 70's standard out of the factory look. I found all my parts on eBay, just search for Vintage Schwinn parts and you will find everything you need.
      Good luck with your Le Tour restoration and thanks for watching...

These are certainly durable smooth riding steel frame bikes, you mentioned that yours were 12 speeds, sounds like they may have been modified with a 6 gear cog freewheel. The 1960 Continental was the first 10 speed, then in 1962 they offered a 15 speed with the triple chain ring set. The Continental was only offered with a 10 speed option through 1982 see link below for history of continental from 1946 to 1982 pretty nice run... @@that70sschwinn Mine were both from a Bicycle Touring Club, that was with a College, in the same town, called Wondering Wheels. The bikes might have been modified there. Yes, it sounds like the Touring Club may have upgraded the freewheel possibly switched to alloy wheels and likely upgraded the derailure to manage the wider gear range. Nice 👍Yep the electro-forged steel frames were design to last as they all had a lifetime warranty. Here is some cool Schwinn frame details you may like.
      Unbeknownst to most of us Schwinn was actually using three types of frame tubing and construction, which meant that there were three classes of Schwinn ten-speed bicycles :
      The top-line Paramount series , with framesets built of silver-soldered Reynolds 531double-butted tubing and Nervex lugs.
      The Superior, Sports Tourer, and Super Sport , whose frames were
      brass fillet-brazed of SAE 4130 chrome molybdenum straight-gauge seamless tubing.
      The remaining models from the "Continental" on down, made of
      flash-welded ("electro-forged") 15-16 gauge longitudinally-welded steel tubing produced in Schwinn's own tube mill.

      I could make them look good but not sure if I could make a damaged dynamo function, The generator is made of a spinning magnet within a coil of wire, as the magnet spins, electricity flows through the coil. The issue can be as simple as a bad bulb or the generator not being placed firmly on the tire.

Rode this bike all over the place as a kid and then had it put back together by a local bike shop over 10 years ago. Still ride it today. It does have a chrome front fork on it. This was due to me being a stupid kid! Handlebars we’re a bit crooked so rather than stop and straighten then out I decided to smack my foot on the side while riding. Foot got stuck in the spoke, hit the fork and I flipped the bike. Fork completely bent forward. I was fine as I was wearing steel toe work boots. Can never get rid of it as it’s part of my childhood. Never realized how heavy this bike was. Prior to the Continental I had an Apple Krate. Wish I had that bike still. Gave it to my neighbors for their son to use and it was destroyed after a couple of years.

      Thanks for sharing! I bet your Krate is sitting somewhere in someone's bike collection, as you may already know, those Krates became quite collectible and very valuable. If we only knew then 🙆‍♂🤦‍♀ Your Continental serial number can be confirmed with the link below, your serial number should be on the bottom of the headtube, you mentioned a chrome fork, but it sounded like that was a replacement? if not then your bike is a 1963 through 1970 Continental featuring chrome forks .
      Thanks for watching 👍

    My World Sport could use a restoration. Don't know what year it is but the bike shop owner seemed eager to get new tires on it. He originally gave me a two-day wait time and then ended up calling me the same evening to tell me she was ready. White frame with white wall tires. The white paint is yellowing a bit but I dont know how to restore it without ruining the logos.

      The bike sounds nice, the World Sport (1979-1984) Schwinn lug framed bike. This chrome-moly racer was a Schwinn approved import from Japan and Taiwan.Very nice lightweight road bike, Keeping the original decals and paint is usually the best option unless the frame has exposed metal that could rust, a nice cleaning and chrome polishing make these bikes look great, see some of my Le tour video for more detail. see link below

    Amazing job and attention to detail. How did you get the rear derailleur to have such a nice chrome shine ? Mine is all chipped and rusty. Also, did your replace the steel wheels ? and why steel ? I know you want to keep the original look but alloy wheels are much lighter and a cheap upgrade. I find it hard to believe that a bike like this can go for so long without needing wheels replaced or rebuilt; wheels get beat up after years of riding, spokes will get loose, break or rust away. That's always been my problem riding old bikes: spoke tension.

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  7 років тому +1

      Thank you! On the chrome I use a paste called "Simichrome" it works great. I also use Evapo Rust to remove the surface rust along with some fine steel wool. If your chrome is chipping then not much you can do besides re-chroming or replacing with one in good shape. This bike has the original S-6 Schwinn steel rims and are in great condition, the wheels were trued and the hubs overhauled with new bearings so it rides like new. My goal is to restore the bikes to their original condition using all original parts or period correct replacements. I have restored several vintage bikes and have 3 more projects in the works, including a 1974 Schwinn Sprint with the curved seat tube and a 1973 Paramount, I just love bringing these old classic back to yesterday

      I was able to find a source on eBay that offered factory color matched Schwinn paint in every color, The spray paint was labeled "Hyper-Formance Sting-Rays by Sherwin-Williams Ultra 700 Urethane Basecoat, the guy is no longer selling them but may have a few left, His name is Pete and the phone number on the container label is 602-397-4869, the cans were expensive plus shipping was over $40 bucks, but I can use on my three kool lemon bikes, getting ready to do my Paramount soon. Sir, Question: I have a 1975 Schwinn Continental. The bike shifts properly, but the lever on the right hand side,by the front handle bars for the gears in the back of the bike is hard to push down. What would I need to do to correct this problem? Thank you, Jay

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  3 роки тому

      1975 Continental Nice!, it sounds like your inner cables need to be lubricated, if your cables appear rusty, they will be hard to shift freely as they struggle to move through the cable housing, if they have never been changed, it may be time to change them and it will shift smoothly. You can buy the cables at your local bike shop, but just make sure they have the small pancake heads that fit into the slim slot of the stick shifter.

      @@towsontigers57 The best way to do it is to take the cable off and lube, however it may be hard to fit the ends back through the derailleurs if the cables have frayed ends. If you have plenty of slack, you can trim the frayed part to allot the cable to fit through the tiny clamp slots. Or replace if needed. You could also try dripping the chain oil while holding the bike in a position that will allow the run the drip through the housing. Hope that helps.

      I'm not selling my bikes at this point, my goal was to own as many of the early 70's lightweight category road bikes and now I have the majority of them. I posted a video with 6 of them but have added 2 more the the fleet, The line up starts with the entry level Varsity, Continental, Super Sport, Le Tour, Sports Tourer and the Paramount, I also just added the Sprint, same rank as the Continental and a World Voyager a level below the Paramount. Having a bike restored can be expensive, most prefer a non restored classic, specially if it's in decent original condition. These old Schwinn's clean up well and all you really need to do is polish the chrome, wax the paint and do a basic tune up, repack the bearings and true the rims. U have done some touch up on some bikes but for the most part I like to leave them original. Here is a couple of links to my videos you may find interesting

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  4 роки тому +1

      @@DiegoGarcia-vy4jb It's more of a feel thing, based on the gear your in, the left shifter moves your front derailure to change to bigger or smaller chain ring. You can move it until it changes and then adjust the lever it to keep the chain from rubbing the front derailleur cage, you'll get the hang of it as long as your derailleurs are set up correctly.

    i picked up a 74 continental at a garage sale and decided to replace some parts on it to get it looking a bit sharper. i've replaced the brake cables and am going to replace the shifter cables next. the ends of the cables i have have a little bit different shaped metal disk and dont fit into the shifter arm like the old ones do. my question is, do i file the sides so they fit inside the arm or just leave them hanging out a bit? i suppose they would work the same if i left them but i was worried that filing them to fit inside might compromise them in some way?

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  7 років тому +1

      I know exactly what you are referring to, the levers have a narrow slot that requires a flat "Coin Head" cable end versus a round "Barrel" head, I was able to find the smaller flat ones at a local bike shop, most modern cables have a bigger end and may not fit correctly. Filing them down to size may work as long as the cable does not get damaged. here is an example of what I'm talking about, these look too big but it will show you both heads the cables come with.

      write it down and then you can look it up on the link below, they may have installed '76 hubs on some Sprint frames they had from the previous year. I have a '74 with the "Schwinn Sprint" logo on down tube and the '75 Sprint has the new logo with Schwinn on the down tube and Sprint on the top tube, so if your decal is all on the down tube it should be a '74... Hi. I am hoping that you can help me. I have a co worker that has a 1974 LeTour available. Same yellow color as yours. He wants $50 for it. It is 100% original except for a newer set of tires. It even has the red and white owners manual. His father was the original owner. It even has all 6 reflectors (including the hubs). I would say that it is probably in the same condition as yours. Another difference with the LaTour is that it was made in Japan. What are you thoughts on that model? Does it have any potential in going up in value? I do own other vintage bikes like a 1970 Raleigh Sports and a 1985 Cannondale SM600. BTW, yours looks great!

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  7 років тому

      Buy it.. $50 is a steal, the 1974 Le Tour was listed as a High end Lightweight Schwinn Approved bike made in Japan. It was the beginning of Schwinn trying to compete with the other manufacturers while cutting manufacturing cost and maintaining quality. The Le Tour replaced the Super Sport as the 3rd bike in the lightweight lineup, The Paramount and the Sports Tourer were 1 and 2, the Le tour had similar features with Shimano hardware. here is some details from the 1974 catalog, this sounds like a sweet bike and it should be worth $400 to $600 if it's in mint condition with original parts., see below for more detail, this was featured as "New for "74"
      Schwinn Approved 10 speed Le Tour
      *Fully lugged brazes lightweight frame
      *Butted top and bottom tubes
      *Quick release aluminum alloy hubs
      *Aluminum alloy crank set
      *Center pull alloy caliper brakes
      *Schwinn-Approved 27" x 1 1/4" Puff Gumwall tires
      ...and it weighs onl 30-32 lbs. depending on kickstand, and frame size.
      The new Schwinn-Approved Le Tour ten-speed. Lightweight, agile, and loaded with fine quality imported features you'd expect to find on much higher priced bikes. The ideal bike for those bicyclists who especially factor, as well as performance. The new Schwinn-Approved Le Tour is an exceptional buy in lightweight ten-speed bikes. Imported by Schwinn!

    • @that70sschwinn
      @that70sschwinn  7 років тому

      I was able to find the reproduction matching Kool Lemon spray paint on eBay, it was expensive but worth it, I have done the Continental, Sports Tourer and getting ready to do my yellow Paramount. I use a small thin brush to carefully dab the small nicks, chips and scratches. I spray just enough in a small cup and dip my brush and lightly touch up the areas needed. You will be surprised how seamless they look when looking at the entire bike. For areas that have exposed metal, I tape a small area, I use a Primer, sand and spray to blend with the rest of the frame, I like the original paint gloss so I always try to maintain it as much as possible. In my latest video for my Chrome Paramount, you can see the yellow Paramount frame in the background, there is a small area on the bottom tube that was damaged by the shifter bracket, I taped and primed and will be sanding and spraying next, it should look good once done, good luck with your project, and always remember, a few nicks and dings can also give a bike character and value, cheers
