Thanks Andy! Glad you liked it, these old bikes sure do clean up well.. Stay tuned for my next project, 1972 Chrome Paramount, she will be gleaming too..Thanks for watching.. Cheers
You inspired me to find my own Sports Tourer for a winter restoration project! My 1974 ST came from CA, just like yours, so all the paint and decals are original, including the bar tape ( just like yours too) LOL. I did exactly what you did- complete disassembly , clean, regrease/repack, fine brush paint touch-up, polish, polish, polish, and new cables + tires. I went a bit further and installed the period correct genuine Schwinn 04-140 generator system, with upgraded led bulbs and a tiny power reservoir built into the rear bulb, which allows it to stay lit for approximately 5 minutes AFTER you stop pedaling for safety !!! Also added a genuine Schwinn bell, an air pump, Brooks tool bag, a small trip computer and mini-chrome fenders by Wald for that retro look. She rides just beautifully, and I could not be more pleased with the results, proving, once again, that hard work does pay off (as you WELL know) !! Love your channel and always look forward to the next story!! God truly IS in the details, yes? Would love to send you a few pix too!

Thanks for posting this video! I'm glad it's still up on YT. Getting ready to start restoration on my '72 (mfg'd late '71) Opaque Green Sports Tourer. It was given to me in the early 1990's by a landlord when it was abandoned by a former renter. Since I acquired it I've hauled it all over the USA, but never ridden it. I recognized it was a quality bike, but I had a very nice and serviceable old Raleigh Grand Prix that I rode. Didn't need the Schwinn, but intended to go through it someday. Someday is now. Mine is starting out a bit rougher than yours, but all there. It will end up being great, though not as nice as your yellow one. Interestingly enough, while I always recognized that it was a higher quality bike, I didn't comprehend what a rare bird it was until I started doing research for the refurb. I'm now excited enough about the Schwinn that, while my old Raleigh now needs refurbished as well, I am going to start with the Schwinn.
Nice! Lucky man you are to get a free '72 Opaque Green Sports Tourer😏🚲🏠 Yes your color is not commonly seen, it was introduced on the 1972 Super Sport, Sports Tourer and Paramount series. Then a year later it was only offered on the 1973 WORLD TRAVELER and one more time, only on the 1974 Paramount series. So the Opaque Green Sports Tourer is a one year color, making it a pretty hard to find filet brazed beauty... Congratulations 👍🚲 If you haven't already, check out the 1970-1974 Schwinn Lightweight Data Book. Looks like the 1971 and 1972 were offered with all the same components, making those my favorite years for the Sport Tourer. www.schwinnbikeforum.com/SLDB/Details/dtail_7074.htm Here is a video a uploaded a while back with my lightweight collection before I added 5 more, including the Sprint, Traveler, Superior, World Voyageur and the hard to find 1977 Volare ua-cam.com/video/YUS_GQeVlV8/v-deo.html
@@that70sschwinn Thank-you for the kind reply and the information! When I first saw this old Sports Tourer, dusty and neglected in my old rented garage, it pretty much took my breath away. At the time, I didn't know a Sports Tourer from a a basketball hoop, but as a long-time Raleigh Grand Prix owner, I realized I was looking at something special. Other than the color -which is astoundingly unique - my eyes were immediately drawn to the frame joints. I'd never seen anything like that. So, while I"ve moved all over the country, been through a nasty divorce (where I lost much), and now retirement, I've always somehow managed to hang onto my old Grand Prix and this Schwinn. Now it's time to overhaul both machines. I think I mentioned that I've never ridden the Sport Tourer, not wanting to risk messing up bearings in unknown condition. The old Raleigh has been ridden plenty, but not in the last ten years. I won't do a museum quality refurb, as I intend to use both bikes, but I want them mechanically sound, clean and shiny, and any defects rectified. I don't think the Sports Tourer needs much at all. The Raleigh has the dreaded plastic Simplex which worked well for about a month back in '74-'75. LOL. It needs to go. While I'm a former helicopter mechanic and well versed with things mechanical, I don't want to screw up either of these machines and have a line on a couple of guys here in the Houston area that I'm going to contact for help - or even doing the work. I will practice my evolving bicycle maintenance skills on my wife's ancient box store ten speed before I mess up the Sports Tourer or the Raleigh. Love "That 70's Schwinn" channel, by the way.
