This came out at the perfect time, I am really looking to get into getting one. Being able to pack it up is a big deal for me, I'm gonna be moving around for a bit and I don't think my big hulking day bed will be the cheapest or easiest thing to move.

Hubby and I sleep on the floor. We are both over 70 years old. Can't remember the last time either of us had a back ache. We snuggle in at night, sleep very comfortably. I have a roll up thick mat I bought online from Jet. And feather quilts, medium weight on top. I fold one lengthwise, and 'slip' myself inside. Off to dreamland, pronto. People are forever telling us how energetic and great we look.
Cynthia wow thanks for sharing. Would you be open to sharing more about your experience sleeping on the floor. How long have you done it for, how did you get into it, etc. Thank you!
Hi Cynthia😊 thank you so much for your comment. I am embarking on the futon world. I am a single woman 55 about 130lbs I am In an apartment. I got one that was cotton wool, And once I got it.. 74 lbs, decided it was too big and bulky. It's About six and a half inches thick and wanted something smaller with a topper. The shiki Bhutan is 37 to 40 lb and 3.5 in. can you tell me how thick yours is? Also I'm mostly a side sleeper in want to make sure that it's comfortable on my hips and shoulders. Can you tell me how yours feel? Do you have anything under your futon? Also do you have a supportive pillow that helps you? Thank you, Diane
My response to people, when I tell them I sleep on the floor, is that the Japanese have been doing it for years and no one bitches about them, plus it's better for your back and spine 🙂
Gotta fold up daily to prevent mold, also for those interested: don’t put directly on the floor or carpet, buy tatami to prevent mold (my tatami makes the whole room smell amazing like fresh cut grass. Once a week I sun mine, both the shikibuton and my foldable tatami. an hour to each side at this time I shake it out and “beat gently” to fluff it up and prevent a divot that forms from your body. Make sure to flip it every night too, foot to head every day to prevent uneven wear. Wash sheets and kakebuton cover once a week. 😎🖤

@@gamayun1224 jlife international makes some amazing futon and Tatami (is a bit pricey) but so worth it. I have their twin futon, cover, and Makura (japanese buckwheat pillow). They also are in the us too which is helpful. That’s a good one, but if ur looking for cheaper I do have a travelmat tatami purchased from Amazon called BJDesign Japanese traditional Igusa (rush grass) tatami mattress. It runs $188 USD. It smells so good and I’ve used it nightly for about 2 years now since it’s lighter and easier to carry outside weekly. It’s strong and has held up well. I use it directly on hardwood with my shikifuton on top.

In April of 2020. I woke up in so much pain i could not walk good . I have been sleeping on a rug for 20 day's now i have no pain like before i feel like i did in my 20,s will never sleep in my queen size bed again i love the froor. And think before you speak god bless you all good nite
i agree with nearly everything you've said , i've slept on a futon on the floor for 30 years ! but you should remove the bedding & roll up the futon ( lengthways ) daily to prevent mould growth . this only takes 1 minute & by doing this you won't have to do the monthly " sterilisation " ( which doesn't really sterilise anyway )
Thank you, I was planning on doing this anyway, glad to know it has other benefits! I have a very small room and space is at a premium, I want more space in my room during the day.
I have gotten the same response when I tell people I sleep on the floor too... doesn't phase me as I know what works for me. I too got the twin extra long and found I could have done with the standard twin. I'm so glad you like it and while I only use it every so often I mainly sleep on the floor with a yoga, sheet or folded knit blanket in the winter for warmth. It does change depending on my needs, but I have the approach, use what I have and I can sleep on a pretty firm surface, anything too soft bothers my back after 1-2 nights and then I transition back to the floor. All the best and so glad to hear your prospective :)
The best sleep I've ever had has been from sleeping on the floor! Once I slept on a towel on hardwood, woke up with no pain at all. I remember the day because I was so surprised and haven't felt so good in the morning before. I used a "futon" roll up mattress from Amazon for 2 years, but the synthetic smell got really annoying. Now looking into something better. I spent about $500 on a western-style futon bed that wasnt as comfortable as sleeping on the floor, so I think I will bite the bullet and buy one of these imported from Japan. Might as well, I haven't slept well since getting rid of my floor "futon" from Amazon, I dream about sleeping on the floor again! PS. I don't sleep on carpet, due to asthma. Hardwood is my preference, with a foam pad under the floor futon.
Great video! My partner and I have been very curious about comfortable this really is. I prefer to sleep on the floor and I can’t stand what lives under beds! My partner is planning on building us a platform then we would try things out such as a futon vs a mattress.
I own one as well but I have a tatami mat underneath it. I even bought a kotatsu table. Its way better than sleeping on mattresses. I love in Pensacola fl
You can also find tatami on Amazon and similar. If you can locate authentic grass filled tatami rather than foam filled (very common) then you can enjoy the tatami scent much longer, for years. The foam tatami (since it is only a grass mat on outside that is real) lose the earthy scent quite fast.
FutonBedsFromJapan.com I have been considering purchasing a futon and was researching a bit. I just found your website earlier today. Seeing you on here is kind of reassuring. To me, it shows that you are indeed authentic.
Have you consideed buying a tatami mat to place the futon on top? I believe they offer additional padding and allow the futon to "breathe" while in usr.
The Ethical Fox the mats are used in traditional japanese homes. The company you purchased the firon feom may be able to give advice. Just a suggestion that may add some use and or comfort for settling issue. Take care. 💜
Excellent point, for sure, C Amoy. Although we do know of a tatami master's website that does ship abroad, freight can be expensive for just 2-3 tatami. Most of our customers order them online in their own country. These however, are often foam filled, instead of the traditional compressed grass-filled tatami. However they are much lighter to ship and still will last roughly 10 years if well taken care of.
I’m considering this bc my shoulder pain from side sleeping has gotten worse over time, which also causes tingling and numbness firing my sleep. Super annoying. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I agree with a lot of the comments regarding the boyfriend: You will have your body with you until you die. Boyfriends, especially boyfriends who can't compromise: INTERCHANGEABLE. Good luck.
Ps a super cheap option for single people is a foldable mattress. I have one from Ikea that cost me 60 dollars and I use it outside for chillin in the sun but it would make a fantastic bed for 1 person actually. It folds up so snugg and takes the same space as a 70 Litre dufflebag!! Amazing option
what you said about people comments is true and i find it ridiculous how people could think they could just come in and say what they want to say, for a while my sister would make side comments about me sleeping on the floor and i just learn to ignore her because she's not worth my time.
I switching to sleeping on a Futon. I was using an air mattress (Yeah don't think of doing that for long term) But Im looking foreword to my Futon coming in a few days from now
Nice Vid, I have slept on a futon for 12 years but its on a wooden frame about a foot off the floor. In any case I sleep so well on it after perhaps taking about 2 month to get use to it. only problem is now I have issues sleeping on a normal mattress when i travel or visit my parents place. if you have back issues then this perhaps is a great solution as my back and hips have been in heaven since i started sleeping on one.
Hi Jessica. thank you for the video. Just to tip, it would have been nice to see the bed.. the thickness, how its setup etc. do you have anything under it?
I would LOVE a Murphy bed. In guestrooms and main bedroom too. swoosh ! : and then you suddenly have 3 extra free rooms for play, work and exercise!!! This is the allure of the futon also since it can be put away. It's probably not happening for me because my boyfriend is not into it. But it's nice to hear your opinion on this.really good way to do sleeping
I've been shopping around for a Japanese futon, so it was great coming across these videos. Are you planning on doing a yearly review? I'd be interested your opinion of it after a year.
I feel like sex wouldn't be as comfortable in this. Like the lack of springiness and cushioning, if that makes sense. No review has talked about this and it makes me hesitant to buy it.
I guess that is why japanesse take off their shoes. Also, I think they use tatami and some other wood carpets to elevate it a tiny bit. But I guess the best options could be mantaining the floor clean, rolling the futon and using lysoforn from time to time. The type of fabric might be crucial too.
I just ordered a Tatami futon mattress. My current bed/mattress is over 10 years old and the mattress sags in the middle and hurts my back. Im going to try and see if it works on my bed springs so I can ditch the mattress. If not, I guess I will ditch the entire bed. I'm 62 and need something better that I can afford so we shall see.
I was watching Naruto and they sleep on futons. I thought it was so cool and I want one. Thank for the link. I checked out their website and the futons are beautiful.
XXIBGDXX I just happened to be watching it. I lived in Japan 12 years ago. It was just confirmation for me to finally get a Japanese futon. If anime is all you know about Japan, then I should be the one feeling sorry for you my friend. Enjoy your regular bed.
@@endijohnson5863 uh ok good for you I feel bad that you just assumed I ment that and I'm happy that you spent a little bit of time in Japan I spent quite a bit of time there as well anyways have a good day and next time don't assume that someone is saying something bad about you and then just go and insult them hopefully you learn something from this but have a nice day again and be safe
Ethical Fox knowing what you do now, what size futon would you get? Would you get a pair of singles for you and your partner? It seems they would be much easier to put away and hang on railing. I also have full-size/queen size sheets and they are having me lean towards getting the larger futon, but I’m thinking maybe a pair of singles might be the way to go. What do you think?
+paulrumohr Well Paul, I still think the pair of singles would have been a lot handier for when I have a guest over or when I want to take it traveling but I still love the queen size when my partner stays over so Im not unhappy with my choice. I would say to weigh the pros and cons on paper, it makes it easier to decide when you can see all your options.
+walklittlelady I got advice from someone today who said the Japanese have a specific type of mat they put under the futon that helps to air it out. I plan to look into that more
I've been hang drying my clothes and bedding for years. Only use a dryer in a rare time crunch. I suggest you lay the futon over the back of two chairs side by side with a fan blowing toward it while you are at work that day. Hang it outside when you have a chance. Anything helps to keep it dry and aired out. This is how I dry my down comforter in the winter months.
Hi! Thank you for your videos on this futon- particularly you information/comparison of their dimensions to western sized mattresses helped me better decide which size would be best fro my needs. I was actually in the process of ordering one of these futons when I noticed they don't ship to the US. Thus my question is, how did you go about getting yours? Thank you!
this looks awesome! considering purchasing one but im curious what the difference is between a futon and sleeping bag. is it similar or is the futon much thicker? thinking about just using my sleeping bag to try this out first.
+Rosalyn Shlafman It is stiffer than a sleeping bag so it provides a little more support but you could definitely try sleeping bags first to see what you think!
thequietaccnt Thats the price unfortunately. A really nice person left a link on my futon unboxing video to a cheaper alternative but it only ships to Europe I think :/
Sam S. i was thinking something else sorry but what I ordered was just a cover for the futon but really I figured that the memory foam layers you can by at Walmart work i just put a soft sheet over it. So far it's working pretty good for me I just cut it in half so its easier to store
I am living alone and currently I have own a 140 cm mattress and I want to buy a Futon, but I can't decide if I want to buy a 160/180 cm for if I ever get a girlfriend. Or I buy a 90 cm or 120 cm for myself alone and when I ever get a girlfriend we buy another 90 or 120 cm futon. What should I do? I like to have some space because I move a lot in my sleep.
Great video :) we gave away our 30cm thick very heavy mattress and bed frame currently sleeping on a 3.5cm thick padded gym mat. My husband & I absolutely love sleeping on the floor best thing we did. Once we move soon we plan to purchase either a queen futon or 2 singles to put next to each other. Wondering if that would make it easier for moving, traveling etc. How thick is yours? The link wouldn't work for me probably because I am in Australia. The one we are looking at is 7.5cm. Didn't want to go too thick or make it bulky to fold up. We are also getting futons for our daughters and my 2 year old chooses to sleep every night straight on the carpet with a thin pillow. She won't sleep on her mattress haha 😂
Bec Benson Great question! I would say it started out 5 or 6 inches thick and is about 4 inches thick now. I dont think it would be any easier to move than what you are doing now, your mat might be able to fold up tighter than the futon. Two singles might be slightly easier because it wouldn't be one big long thing. It is so cool that your kids are getting involved and want to sleep on the floor too :) I hope the full web address will work for you: www.futonbedsfromjapan.com/naia
You're correct. We do not ship to Australia. However, If you contact us, we can give you the information to an Oz distributor that sells futon made in our factory.
What about for stomach sleepers? This isn’t addressed in any of the comments on any of the videos. I like the idea, but I’m a stomach sleeper with no info as to whether or not it’s advised.
No I used to hate sleepovers where I was on a blanket or sleeping bag. I feel like it provides more support. My fiance would probably say otherwise though
Hi. I know this is an older video but no one who sleeps on the floor will answer my question, so I'm hoping you will. Do you have bugs crawling on you at night when you sleep? I want to switch to floor sleeping but bugs are my only concern. Thanks!
Bugs also crawl up beds so really there shouldn't be much different. They recommend keeping the floor really clean when using a futon so you'd be keeping it clean anyway.
i got the twin from , I'm over 6 foot and it fits me fine. look up EMOOR traditional japanese futon. Got the mat and the futon mattress, I do recommend getting a cover as well. cheers
Hi, so for a really long time, I have been suffering from bad posture and poor sleep but gradually it has gotten better as I have done strength training and I currently sleep on the floor, but I noticed I will feel a little uncomfortable. I haven't woken refreshed in quite awhile, in fact I will wake up prettt tired. I'm really just wondering if like a futon is good for upper back pain. And just how thick is the mattress? I'm just afraid if i get, I might not like it. Im just afraid of getting things that won't work. I do notice how posture and stuff plays a big factor in everyday life and even as you sleep.
+Kevin Huynh Hi Kevin! I went through about a month of discomfort but if you currently sleep on the floor and don't like it, the futon probably is not for you. It started out as 4 or 5 inches thick and since I use it every night and forget to hang it up, it is probably 3 inches thick now. I don't experience pain but I've never had pain. Chiropractors suggest a firm sleeping space with some cushion so experiment with elevating your legs using pillows and make sure your neck isnt over extended and that might help. You might need a bed with more support than me.
The Ethical Fox I think it was because I didn't have enough cushioning on the floor, its like just a blanket n some sheets, only problem was side sleeping. It took you a month to get used to? Didn't one of your videos saying you liked it on the first day? What about when you lie down on the futon, does it like sink down a lot to where to feel the floor? I just ordered one, like I found out that the perfect bed for me is just some cushion and a hard or firm surface under it.
Hi David! Great question. Mine is really big so it would only fit in an industrial washing machine and the laundry mat. A single size might fit in the one at home.
Lol that’s so funny I thought it was going to be something bad an it’s just a Cigarette lol an no I don’t smoke an I have asthma I just find it funny how ppl freak out

+Johnny G Thanks Johnny for sharing your experience! I know other people watching this will appreciate it :)
Thanks great feedback 👏🏻 thanks, I’m really interested in one now
I just got one & I love it! I have the kingsize too , I find your tips very helpfull
Can you tell us about the wall on your bedroom? Is it paint?
It looks beautiful!
Hi Jessica. thank you for the video. Just to tip, it would have been nice to see the bed.. the thickness, how its setup etc. do you have anything under it?
“What’re you homeless?” 😂😂😂 your dad and I would get along
I love your cover up sheets x ) where did you get them?? lol
The word you looking for is "transitioning" or "adjustment period" 😊
So many reasons I’m considering….. but car camping benefits with my suv? Wow…… you’ve done it now
I would LOVE a Murphy bed.
I'd be interested your opinion of it after a year.
your car fits a queen size bed?! thats huge
I have a question so what about if you a a bed protector "bed bag with zipper thing" whud u still need 2 hang it out ?
So what do you do, as far as airing out the futon, when the weather is horrible?
The next review you should make is if you're still with your boyfriend and what kind of bed you are sleeping on by then.
5:10 cigarette? That's the least of your worries in motel rooms lol.
I feel like sex wouldn't be as comfortable in this. Like the lack of springiness and cushioning, if that makes sense. No review has talked about this and it makes me hesitant to buy it.
Don't partake in the Devil's temptation, it's that easy

Thanks for the great Video. Planning On getting a Japanese Futon in a month or two. Should really change the game up for me:)
How do you keep away bed bugs from it?
I was looking at cons about it and it mentioned bed bugs😨
XXIBGDXX
I just happened to be watching it.
Shucks. Sleeping on a futon is what's keeping your boyfriend apprehensive. Time to drop that boyfriend
Please reply it is very much appreciated! How many inches thick is this shikibuton?
Really useful review! I'm from Chile and now I'm trying to get one. Unfortunelly, is a bit hard to buy one not to expensive.
Thanks again!
Great video Jessica! You are amazing! :)
how did things pan out? are you still doing the floor thing?
Idk why but I laughed out loud like 6 times watching this
Edit: thanks, this was helpful, looking for something like this
Ethical Fox knowing what you do now, what size futon would you get?
I want a futon! but I live in an apartment amd have no balcony. how would i air it out. :(
+walklittlelady I got advice from someone today who said the Japanese have a specific type of mat they put under the futon that helps to air it out.
JennX if you can get sunlight on it too, it may help also (:
The Ethical Fox Did you ever find out what that specific mat is called?
The mat that they're referring to is called a Tatami mat. Hope that helps!
Thank you!
You found us! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ Very happy we were able to get you taken care of.
this looks awesome! considering purchasing one but im curious what the difference is between a futon and sleeping bag. is it similar or is the futon much thicker? thinking about just using my sleeping bag to try this out first.
+Rosalyn Shlafman It is stiffer than a sleeping bag so it provides a little more support but you could definitely try sleeping bags first to see what you think!
I clicked the link and the bed is coming out to almost $500😮 I'm am in the wrong spot or is that really the price?😬
thequietaccnt Thats the price unfortunately. A really nice person left a link on my futon unboxing video to a cheaper alternative but it only ships to Europe I think :/
thequietaccnt I saw some on Amazon for like $60
Thequietaccnt got me one on ebay for hundred bucks
Sam S. haha yeah pain free
Sam S. i was thinking something else sorry but what I ordered was just a cover for the futon but really I figured that the memory foam layers you can by at Walmart work i just put a soft sheet over it. So far it's working pretty good for me I just cut it in half so its easier to store
My mother also thinks I'm weird for sleeping on the floor.
Thank you for making this video!
Wow love your room!
+Toyon95 Thank you :)
I've been always sleeping on the floor
If you are broke go to used sports Store and buy yoga mats
she said she found a cigarette on the floor and that was really grose, llololol,,, the next person finds it and feels like the won the lottery lol
Thanks!
Thanks for the experience 🤗❤️
+Dhiene Sousa You are very welcome :)
I have back pain and is this good to sleep on futon
What about for stomach sleepers? This isn’t addressed in any of the comments on any of the videos. I like the idea, but I’m a stomach sleeper with no info as to whether or not it’s advised.
From my research, these are not for stomach sleepers apparently . 😟 On some other videos on these futons that issue was addressed.
I have a futon and I sleep on the floor and I’m a stomach sleeper and it’s no problem. :)
I am not a Fox
Can you hanky panky on it?
Peter Gazer yea you won't have the chance of breaking the bed frame for this instance
you can hanky panky on the cardboard box if you want to open your mind bro...
Hhh
Can confirm.
Any place is a place for hanky panky if you're in the mood.
It doesn't feel like just sleeping on a blanket, right?
No I used to hate sleepovers where I was on a blanket or sleeping bag. I feel like it provides more support. My fiance would probably say otherwise though
Distribute the weight?
Anyone know what the wallpaper/paint style is called? I love it!?!?!
Bucketlicious Swede
+Bucketlicious It is called marbling I think. They paint the wall a lighter color and then sponge on a darker color randomly. I love it too!
The Ethical Fox wowwwwww!! THANK YOU!!
which size your futon has?
Thanks for this video!
Hi. I know this is an older video but no one who sleeps on the floor will answer my question, so I'm hoping you will. Do you have bugs crawling on you at night when you sleep? I want to switch to floor sleeping but bugs are my only concern. Thanks!
No
Bugs also crawl up beds so really there shouldn't be much different. They recommend keeping the floor really clean when using a futon so you'd be keeping it clean anyway.
thank you for your help. just bought mine, a little smaller.
:)
+Mason Cutler That's awesome! Good for you :)
What size did you get Mason?
i got the twin from , I'm over 6 foot and it fits me fine. look up EMOOR traditional japanese futon. Got the mat and the futon mattress, I do recommend getting a cover as well. cheers
Thanks pal!
You should at least show the futton 😑
Spiders love it when you sleep on the floor.

Great vid, thanks for sharing :)
Grace Homan Thank you Grace! I appreciate that :)
Can you put it in the washing machine ?
Hi David! Great question. Mine is really big so it would only fit in an industrial washing machine and the laundry mat. A single size might fit in the one at home.
