Hubby and I have had our beds on the floor for over ten years now. He has a futon; so do I. We snuggle in at night, and are totally cozy and comfortable. We are both 70+. Which is great, since we don't care a gnat's pecker... if people think we're crazy. We are healthy, happy, and well rested... every night!
i aspire to be you, dearie!!! 70+ and still sleeping on the floor. i sleep on the floor because i am lazy and fall asleep wherever i want. i slept on the floor before it was cool LOL
I've been sleeping on the floor now for 1 year . I suffered from horrific sciatica and was paralyzed for over 3 months which made me go from the bed to the floor . I just throw 2 blankets on the floor and another blanket to keep over me that's it . I wake up without pain now and it had corrected my posture and spine. But yeah I need to get something a little better maybe like a yoga mat. I hate sleeping on anything soft now . It has to be rock hard and flat as possible.
The pressure on your tissues, muscles, and blood vessels makes absolutely no sense. If you lay on a futon or mattress you still are laying on tissues, muscles, and blood vessels since they cover the skeletal system.
I don't have an opinion about hammocks, but this video does mention the "hammock effect" a few times. A Doctor's Perspective on Floor Sleeping - Is it Good or Bad? ua-cam.com/video/sQ-i0dNIXPA/v-deo.html
I slept for 3 years on the floor and I developed lower back pain and neck pain. And I try everything to make it comfortable and easy for me but I could no longer stand the pain. I love sleeping in my bed. Different bed for different people.
Marie R After I had back surgery (because of a sports injury) my doctor recommended a very fimr mattress in order to heal properly, I have been sleeping in the floor for 8 years now and I have never experienced any discomfort, in fact I sleep much better and my back feels completely recovered, now if I sleep on a soft mattress my back will hurt
jessicaaudate yikes! and she say they get ruined in under a year? oh like hanging it outside is a good idea-maybe if you have the means to do so and even then not always a good idea. but I highly doubt hanging it is going to make it last that much longer. man alive. she must be getting money for this video.
If you actually read what she said, "With improper care, they can be ruined in under a year." Improper being the keyword. Hanging it outside dries sweat and anything else and keeps it from growing bacteria.
Two weeks before my furniture got shipped to my apartment I was sleeping in the floor with comforters. By the time my bed got here I didn’t want it anymore.
Sleeping on the floor has so many benefits, including for; infants, movement patterns & even the climate. Babies have a deeper connection with their parents when they co-sleep & the bed at 4:02 wouldn't have a falling hazard. Also babies seem to develop more competent movement skills when they are on the ground with their parents sitting on the ground with them. In the Blue Zone Okinawa, the furniture is traditionally very low, and their population of centenarians has the highest mobility of all the worlds' centenarians. Floor sleeping also reduces the desire for huge houses, as rooms become more multi-functional. This reduces urban sprawl & commuter pollution.
During my first semester at university I had to wait two weeks before buying a mattress, so what I did was take my yoga mat, put it on the floor and sleep on it. I quickly realized how comfortable it actually is! When I have laundry to fold, I put it on my bed and sometimes I prefer to procrastinate the folding so I take out the yoga mat and sleep on the floor again lol
Futons are very common in Turkish culture, too. We call it döşek(doshek) . They are made of sheep's wool and have cotton cover. Commonly used by villagers and some other people. Many others have them in their homes in case there's not enough bed for the guests. They are known for being healthy and good for the back pain. And the hygiene is not all about airing them often. You can also wash the wool once a year and reuse it. It has versions for sofa and quilt as well.
I love sleeping on the floor. When I moved into my first apartment after college, I couldn't afford a bed, so I slept on the floor for a couple of years. Then, I bought a $1,000 bed (and a pillow-top mattress) and slept in it one night. I gave it away a week later. That was 6 years ago and no more beds. 😁
I couldn't afford a bed for awhile in my new apartment. My floor is concrete with hard tiles on top. I got a basic platform bed and memory foam mattress, I love it.... ha. Might be the type of floor you sleep on. If it's wood (like I think it should be, or in Japanese homes it is) it's probably more comfortable.
I lived in Japan for a year and was lucky enough to have a tatami floor in my bedroom. I never slept so well as I did on a shikibuton. I've thought so many times of recreating that in my current American apartment.
Since moving into our new apartment in Tokyo, I've been sleeping exclusively on a futon and I was so surprised at how comfortable it is! I think I still prefer a bed, but it's certainly a wonderful option (especially for those with back/neck pain)
+Christy Anne Jones Thanks for sharing your experience Christy! I'm glad you were able to have the experience, especially while living in Japan. It is fun to experiment with different cultures and then later keep only the things that work for us =)
I can't get a futon I'm in school so I put my mattress protector on the ground with a blanket on it and a couple of pillows I think it works the same..
I've been sleeping on a Japanese futon for about a month now. After the first night or two (which was a slightly uncomfortable adjustment) I haven't had any of the severe back pain that I've been suffering from for YEARS. I do have fairly severe allergies, which makes sleeping so low to the ground a bit difficult to adjust to, but overall I cannot praise this sleeping style enough. I have mild-to-moderate scoliosis which was not diagnosed until I was in my twenties and has caused me much discomfort over the years, but I now notice a real decrease in my pain (including from my occasional sciatica). At present, I am sleeping on a 4" shikibuton on 2" tatami, and it is very comfortable, if a bit firm for my friends. I do have plans to make a 3" shikibuton to keep around for guests, or to add to my bed when I'm feeling extra luxurious😊 It's a bit odd to move from a standard "western" style bed, but I can't see myself ever going back!
So glad to hear you have had a similar experience. I'm still on my futon 5 years later because it makes such a difference for my back. I'm looking into tatami options now too. Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate your opinion on beds, blood vessels and bone structure, but I feel expanding your experience to generalize in a scientific way is dangerous. Or give sources.
Thanks for your suggestion. I added these to the description box for those that are interested: A Doctor's Perspective on Floor Sleeping - Is it Good or Bad? ua-cam.com/video/sQ-i0dNIXPA/v-deo.html + What's Hiding in Your Mattress? goo.gl/4kRKya
Taylor Daniel Sciff my family does, but only the females, like my great grandma and my adoptive grandfather, both died at 97. Live in the US and ate unhealthy, genetics has a LOT to do with how we die.
I would need to see some peer review research supporting this (doctor of chiropractic != a medical doctor by the way). There are large swaths of the world that still sleep in hammocks for example, and you don't see the problems alleged from not having "bottom resistance" provided it's properly hung.
In recent weeks starting at the end of February, I got rid of my entire bed & mattress set up because I was having so many back issues, trouble falling asleep and finding a good position, waking up in middle of the night, you name it! I just gathered all the thickest blankets and comforters around my place, layered them on top of each other and with a heating pad, I sleep SOO good now, I don't even wake up in the middle of the night anymore! As a side sleeper I do use a few pillows for my knees, ankles, and lumbar area, but other than that, I only turn about twice/ three times before going back to deep sleep. Best choice I made in my personal life in a long while :)
Even when I just lay on the floor I feel my back stretch and it hurts so good and is definitely needed. Sleeping on the floor would be so helpful for me.
I sleep on a futon as well, but in my family we lay it on a raised tatami platform/bed frame of sorts. I find that the height is better for getting in and out of bed. Not as portable though haha
+Claire Ko I love that idea. Tatami is also more comfortable than the hard floor and probably much easier for taller people to get in and out "of bed." Thanks for sharing!
Japanese futons plus tatami is the ultimate combination. I've done a little research on tatami too. Besides being more comfortable than a fully hard floor, it also has its own set of benefits. Glad to hear you have had a positive experience =)
Hi, I don't think you actually need a tatami, you can perfectly sleep on a futon only. The reason why I have tatamis is because of the moist underneath the futon. I always had wooden floors and I didn't want to risk stains since I am always renting my apartments. The benefits I experienced are much deeper sleep, no backache anymore and I don't have to worry about any chemicals, in my mattress. With a futon you can usually say exactly what materials you want to have in there.
I've been sleeping on the floor... The first days I felt discomfort on my hips but now it's getting better and better. I definitely wake up feeling a lot better than when I was sleeping on a bed.
I've been sleeping on the floor (no futon or other padding) for nearly 20 years. Doing so has resolved my sciatica issue. If my back hurts, I'll sleep on my back with my legs on a chair at a 90 degree angle. No more doctors. No more physical therapy. I also experience a better, deeper sleep.
Hi, I have a make sift "Japanese futon" I was sleeping on an air mattress that resembles a twin-size bed. The air bed deflated and I needed a bed ASAP. I looked online for a pillow mattress and saw a DIY for a toddler pillow bed. And the blog post stated take a sheet and fold the sheet in half the long way (this is the "mattress" cover) and put the pillows in the cover, sew across the pillow cover so the pillows line up in the cover horizontally, I bought cotton pillows and bought all of my bedding from Walmart. I then took my fitted sheet put that over the "mattress" cover with the lined-up pillows inside added a throw blanket over the top tucked it under the pillow mattress to add more warmth. Added a loose sheet and a comforter to complete the bed making process it's been almost a year and I never realized how comfortable this "bed" is. I do pick up my 'bed' every day in order to air it out just like I would if I had a real Japanese futon. Sleeping this way, I noticed my back pain and leg cramps have stopped. I take my pillows and use clothespin to attach the four pillows to a metal laundry rack to air out every day. I store my bedding in the closet and keep the door open to allow air circulation, and I will also turn on the ceiling fan too. One day I hope to own a real Japanese futon mattress.
I sleep on the floor regularly... I use a 3" latex foam topper and a sleeping bag, right on the floor. My big motivator for this is the "use it or lose it" concept... I love camping, which requires sleeping on the ground, right? I also have back problems- degenerative disk disease, and other wonderful spinal maladies. I found that when I slept on a regular bed, my back pain was worse, and I couldn't sleep on the ground (ie, camping). Now I do Dr. Stuart McGill's "big three" exercises for spinal stability, and I sleep on the floor. I love it! My back feels better than it did 10 years ago, and I'm 50. I will probably never sleep on a traditional bed again.
nice to see ppl with the same experience. i`ve been sleeping on a futon on the floor for 4 weeks now, and after a hard beginning, it`s getting better and better. will never go back to a bed again. its a feeling of grounding i never had before. i also feel it makes my body slimmer. my clothes fit better now. can`t explain this, its a miracle :))
My husband and I own a tri folding mattress that we keep in the living room and acts like a small couch when it's not being used. We like to sleep on it when it gets too hot in our room and really enjoy how it keeps us cooler during summer nights. Heat rises so when it's hot, it is much cooler to be lower on the ground. We sometimes even take naps on it during the day. Our bedroom does have our normal bed, with a firm mattress which feels great on my back since I too have minor scoliosis. When it gets cooler in the year, we'll definitely stay sleeping on the bed. But for now, we sometimes sleep on the floor (^_^) Also, we've both experienced sleeping on the floor when we were really young!
+elijanemo That is a very interesting point about the temperature and warm air rising. I'm sure their are some great firm mattress out there as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 💛💛
That's a myth spread by the mattress industry to make you buy a mattress every handful of years. No way can dust mites and your skin cells gather so much and add so much weight.
Cris C Do a little research friend. 80% of dust is just skin cells. Humans shed a lot and it is quitr fascinating once you find out. Especially of the matress is shared, you are in for a whole lot of dead skin in that mattress
I hear ya girl! I have bought several beds over my lifetime...and each and every time, I always end up dragging the mattress onto the floor and ditching the frame. And now, I'm not even using the mattress I purchased last year--I just use lots of pillows, blankets, and my carpet. I sleep--very, very well.
In today’s society and regular human life, people are spending their majority of time sitting or lying in very unnatural positions, these positions have become natural from a very young age. This happen when you where indoctrinated to sit 8hours in primary school on a wooden chair. Many hours and days/months later most if not all people develop a shagging forward tilted head, weak abdominals that even provoke this posture more, and weak back muscles (erector spinea) adding into this complex problem that has become natural, people sleep on super soft beds that let you hips sink deep, while you head is supported in your unnatural position... so, yea, the floor is a good idea as gravity will slowly recorrect the spine and posture into its natural position. A few years ago, people did not eat 7times a day, sit for 10hours, and so on. Modern society has developed human beings to rely on support. Namaste have a good day. A reason to practice yoga is to recorrect posture with the help of Adana, but don’t be fooled by farse commercialized yoga, yoga is there to help you achieve higher conciousness and happiness throughout self realization.
This was really interesting to watch. I loved the idea of being able to use the bedroom for another purpose throughout the day, without a bed taking up any space!!
Hi... I've been sleeping on a cotton filled futon placed on the floor since my sixteenth birthday. I can't explain why, I simply feel so much more refreshed each day. I totally understand this method isn't for everyone but it works for me... All my friends think it's strange but I love it.
I live in a small apartment and it’s so useful to remodel my room into a tatami. I can just roll up my blanket and futon and put it in my closet and move my small desk and cushions out. It saves space.
i made my first japanese bed purchase and i literally can’t wait for it i hate having a mattress and it’s all i’ve been thinking about for the past week!
I used to suffered from severe back pain...from neck to lower back...It was an awful feeling....Since, we moved to our new house...I decided to threw my bed away...and now,I do sleep on the floor...And Noticed,no more backpain!
I am 70 years old and my husband and I have slept on the floor for about 10 years. I noticed that just the action of pushing my body up from the floor has increased my flexibility and upper body strength. I have much less difficulty pushing off the the snow when I fall when skiing.
This is a VERY timely video for me! The last bed I purchased was at least 12 years ago. I had finally gotten rid of my Queen size bed (mattress/box springs/frame) that I'd had since probably the late 70's/early 80's...YIKES! The new bed is a single but, now after 12 years, my body aches from sleeping in it. I've seen a few videos on sleeping on the floor and futons but I live on disability so finances are an issue; however, I recently told my mother about how long I've had my current bed and how uncomfortable it is so she said she is willing to purchase either a new mattress or futon for me. (The idea of a futon I presented was the type that is a convertible style futon couch - not sure if that's considered a true Japanese futon.) The last time I moved apartments, all my furniture had been picked up by the moving company but I spent one last night in the old apartment to get some cleaning done. All I had was two quilts that I laid on top of each other on the floor and a third for a cover, a floor lamp, my clock radio, a book, and my cat. I honestly felt so cozy and comfortable. I'm embracing a minimalist lifestyle so perhaps a studio apartment will be in my future. Back to futons.... Unfortunately, the management of the apartment where I currently live doesn't replace carpeting until it's...horrible. I've lived in this apartment over five years and the same carpeting from the current tenant/s is still here. A concern about sleeping so close to the carpeting is how dirty it is but I could rectify that by renting a steam cleaner. (One of my neighbors did that and she said that even after about four times of changing the cleaning solution, the water from the carpet was still brown...ick.) That aside, I'm very interested in checking out the links you have posted for the futons you recommend. Thank you again!
If people are in the PNW of the US, there is a local store in SE Portland called Rock Soft Futon and they sell 100% all cotton shikibutons! They are well made and very comfortable. They’re made locally and are really reasonably priced! We got our Queen size mattress for $275. They also can add new layers of cotton for $25/layer down the road if the mattress compresses.
Hi, Tara I lived in South Korea while teaching there, and the traditional YO is not nearly as comfortable as a Futon, although I am sure that Koreans would disagree with that. However, I did become used to them, and when I moved back home, I had trouble sleeping in a bed and would sleep on my living room floor. The problem with Western style sleeping is, as you said, a matter of hygiene, but a little worse than you described. The increased weight of the mattress over time is due to the poop of millions of dustmites, and the pint or so of perspiration during the night. Not airing out your mattress as soon as you get up adds to the problem. You really need to vacuum a Western type mattress at least once a month to get rid of the dustmite poop!
Wow!! It is worse than I realized. Thank you so much for sharing Elise. Have you found something that works for you now? I used to teach in Korea too btw =)
Hi, Tara Well, over time I got used to sleeping in my bed again, although I do miss having the heat from the Ondol below me (ha, ha). The rest of my family thought that I was just plain weird (true enough) for sleeping on the living room floor, and some not so nice remarks were being made. Rather than go through the gauntlet every morning, I decided that I would sleep in my bed. It took me a long time to get used to that again. I prefer the Futon over the Yo, but prefer the Ondol over the practically non-existent heating in Japanese homes.
After my wife passed away, sleeping on a traditional bed felt very weird for me. I couldn’t sleep at all. I gave it up and have been sleeping on a futon for the last 3 years. I sleep less than before and feel more refreshed in the mornings. It has been incredibly beneficial to my everyday life and overall health.
I wish I found sleeping on the floor comfortable! You save so much space. I slept on the floor often as a child and on a VERY firm bed (literally everyone would complain about how firm it was) as a teen and never got good sleep...I'd wake up every 2-3 hours =( Now I sleep on a firm but moderately soft bed and get much better sleep.
if you sleep on futon... you are not sleeping on the floor, and everything you said is void (ignoring it's mostly wrong). i've slept on a yoga mat for two years after a back injury, and it was great.
This is very interesting... I have scoliosis and suffer from tension headaches, maybe sleeping on the floor could help me! Thank you for making this video!
As a physiotherapist I tell you to look for scientific stuff. The important is the position of the body and where you put the pillows. You wanna stop a sciatica or a lumbar stenosis ? Different pillows positions for different problems.
I do that. It's easy to maintain. Make sure everything made of natural fibres is easy to wash and dry. My bedding components can all fit in my washing machine - not all at once hehe.
I have a futon from FutonBedsFromJapan and they are amazing!! It was worth every penny we paid to ship it to the US and the fabric is gorgeous. Where I live it's very rainy so it's harder to give it time to air out, but in the summer we hang it out constantly and it feels like sleeping on a cloud after it gets some sun! Highly reccommend them.
Sleeping on the floor is so adventurous and falling asleep is so meditative. I feel my body and weight 100% and the resistance makes me more powerful. I walk straighter and the pain in my leg starts to disappear.
My Dad is 71. He always said that sleeping on the floor is the best for your body (based off his own experiences with it and how it made his body feel). I would sleep on one but my husband would probably divorce me 🙈😂
Some of the aches and pains that some people are commenting may be from the 'locking' in of your body or position from sleeping on a mattress or because you havent moved in hours. Those super cushiony mattresses are made for that--keeping you in one position. You'll need more than a week to adjust to sleeping on the floor. Better align your back too so you wont have to visit the chiropractor to get it adjusted; posture is a plus since sleeping on a poor quality mattress could develop bad habits like slouching and bad posture positioning. I left the US for almost 4 months and sleept on what was close to just a bare bone piece of oakwood frame. Just flat, I was not used to it at first but after I while I noticed when I woke up my muscles felt different. I miss that. Mattresses can be less organic and yucky after years of bacteria buildup. Different strokes for different folks.
I have an air mattress from Walmart, very cheap, have used it for 5 yrs. Just make sure to not over inflate it & nothing sharp on the floor that can cut through it. I also use a mattress topper on it so that it’s not cold in the winter (air mattresses can get very cold in winter season).
In Turkey sleeping on the floor is so common and feels nostalgic. Because most of the Turkish kids have no room until teenage like me. And we always set up floor beds for our guests and its super fun.
You are tiny. I am a husky big boned woman. I have slept on floor on and off my whole life but permanently a couple months ago. I have severe herniated disk issue caused by falling and other injuries. Sleeping in beds seemed comfortable but one day I was actually paralyzed and couldn't get out of bed. I had to roll off and fell to floor. Pretty scary and painful. I remembered sleeping in floor in past and it's effect on back, very straightening! It took time to adjust as I'm not light. I have big bones (no exaggerating) and I was afraid my husky body would never adjust but it did. A couple months and I'm starting to feel back strengthen. Now I won't lie, its not easy at first. But when back pain is so bad its like a saw or hellraiser horror you feel relief to straighten out your back. Positions you sleep in important. If you need pillows to get used to it use them. I started using tons of pillows. Now they sit mostly against wall as I only need one now. I have a exercise mat (equivalent to gymnastics mat),a thin mat on top of that, a thin foam cover, sheet, blanket. A sheet and comforter then on top of that to cover me. Me and my doggie are both happy in this set up. : ) I recommend floor sleeping to all. You also avoid bed bugs. If you've ever seen pin size blood spots on bed, you have bed bugs. Can happen even if you bought new mattress. Fyi,Most beds are recycled beds. This is untold story they don't want you to know. Manufacturing of beds is evil and bad for planet, especially types like purple brand beds that can give you cancer by breathing the mattress. Don't do it. Asians and other cultures did it and do it because it was the original way, the smarter way.
I always kept putting a blanket on the floor in my bedroom or my parent's bedroom whenever I felt stressed as a kid, but as an adult I stopped doing that because the floor is cold and seasonal allergy are worse there. Eventually I realized I can use my bed with a flat board on it instead of slats, and put a thin shikibuton on that! Now I have the good parts of the floor, and the good part of a bed.
+Nohemymimis That is completely understandable! I defo went through a transition period as my body learned to adjust. I also found futons to be much better than sleeping on the floor only, which was a bit of a shock initially =)
Three reasons why I got a Japanese futon: 1) It got rid of my back pain, 2) I can fold it up on my closet and have much more floor space in my room, and 3) it's really cheap; a very nice, high-end futon runs like 300$-400$ tops. My "cheap" bed was still like 700$ and it was deformed after three years.
For those living in Canada, it would be ok for Spring and Summer with the Japanese Futon. Not recommend for Automn and Winter. The floor create humidity and it will give a bad smell to the Futon (by experience). Remember that during Winter the floor is very cold and you wont be comfortable sleeping. You must be at least 8"-12" inches away from the floor.
I have lower back problems. While in the military I was told the best thing is to sleep on the floor. So I tried it a couple of days. One thing I noticed right away is the lower portion of my back starts to feel like it is being decompressed. If sleeping on the floor is not for you a firm mattress is the way to go.
I've been sleeping on the floor for a year now and I love it. The bed I had previously was too lumpy and I couldn't sleep well, but the floor is really cozy. I want to buy a futon when I move into my own apartment and be able to store it away easily. I have back pain from years of bad posture *cough* video games *cough* but the floor helps with that. People think it's odd that I prefer the floor over a bed, but it's so comfortable.
Due to necessity when I moved to Denver in 4/2016 (which didn't work out) I started sleeping on a 4" thick full size foam mattress topper (2" of regular foam and 2" of memory foam) on the floor. Now in New Mexico I could get a real bed...but I have NO desire to. I find being on the floor much more comfortable! I clearly sleep better. I have cervical spine damage and live in 24/7 pain and this does not make me worse. A side perk is that when my cats need to go to the vet, they can't hide under a huge bed. LOL -- Also, I car camp by folding the mattress pad in half and put it in the back of my Honda Fit.
I slept on a futon on a raised platform that was wooden. It was actually VERY comfy. I lived in a Japanese women's dorm so that was the bed provided. Easy to lift up and clean. I've been back from Japan since December. I still miss sleeping on the futon and I really want one as my next bed. I have this (sort of) fancy mattress but I don't find it super duper comfy. When I get my own home, maybe I'll purchase a real futon online lol not the futons that are basically pull out beds.
This is a little off topic. People have asked you in the comments where can they get a futon. I find it strange that obviously they have internet but can't look up the info themselves. Asking for recommendations, ok, asking basic questions that they could have searched on their own, not ok. I see this A LOT, and then, do they actually sit and wait for a reply or video response? If so, the whole time they just dont bother to TRY and research? As a research fiend, i guess i was just triggered by that statement...lol. Great video by the way.
Yea! This is quite common. As a fellow research fiend, I can't always understand it either. Still, I'm thankful for the engagement and always try my best to help =)
This drives me crazy, too. I see this on all kinds of informational UA-cam videos. I think it's probably either they trust the UA-camr more than their own research, or it's just laziness.
I get what you mean. Still, I imagine they want a personal recommendation from a person who knows futons well and may very well recommend one brand over another.. or suggest which brands or styles to avoid.
This is so interesting. The best sleep I have ever had was on an air mattress before I bought a bed. I'm not sure if this is as good for the body, but it sure felt great. My husband and I are contemplating a new bed setup as ours is just making us more sore. Maybe I can get him into trying one of these. He has psoriatic arthritis and I have fibromyalgia pains. We tried a memory foam mattress topper and its more of a pain than anything.
Crystal The Minimalist Cat Mom I have similar health issues and the only thing I can sleep on is an air mattress. I use a sleep number set on a high number (meaning really firm) but I have slept on many types of air mattresses and do fine on most. When my husband was single he slept on a camping type air mattress on a platform bed and he loved it.
I’ve been a sports massage therapist for 7 years and I finally switched to a high quality handmade futon. I’m not talking about a cheap one with springs that can be folded in half to be converted into a couch, nope! It’s been almost 2 years and the results have been incredible for me. My back never hurts even though I have a mild scoliosis. I LOVE my futon. I might look into one like her’s when mine needs to be replaced. There wasn’t really an adjustment period for me but there could be for other people. It can take time to recondition your body and take it out of its comfort zone to see the benefits. I would consult your doctor and do your own research especially if you have anything like degenerating disc, arthritis, etc! What works for one person might not work for another but this definitely works for me!
I don't know about other materials but latex mattresses are incredibly confortable and they are toxic to bacteria and other microorganisms so they are completely sanitized always... I don't think that venting the futon outside the window (where there can be also bugs) is more higienic, anyway I might agree on the rest :D
I slept on carpet with a piece of hospital foam for about a year. Then I slept on 4 inch foam mattress with plywood underneath for 10 years. Works fine. Right now, I think platform bed would be good because my floor is rarely clean and with no carpet, it gets awfully cold. I'll can put some futon mattress over it. In any case, I sleep with a thin pillow(or folded up blanket) lengthwise under my spine, works great even in hotels with awful mattress.
i cant get a futton, but we bought top matreses, and i am sleeping on the floor, only on my top matress, and recently without a pillow, and now i even sleep on the side, without any problems. for hygienic purposes, i took out the cussion of the top matress, and once a year, both parts are machine washed, air dried and lay cussion first, coat second, and sheets third, i also use 100% woolen blankets. i do recomend placing dark to black towel where your pillow should be. the darkness helps the eyes and mind relax faster. since sleeping on the floor without a pillow, i only need 6 hours to gain the rest i once needed 8 hours for
BTW, tried air mattress as well and that Was worse for my back. So if you use air mattress regularly it will damage back over time. It was designed for temporary sleep situations like camping or guests. Not for permanent sleep situations. Thank you for this video. With your back disorder you know the wrath of beds and damage they cause. Blessings.
Ive been sleeping on a air mattress for months(6+), and my back is fine(in fact sleeping on one stopped my back/shoulder pain). Maybe it was the firmness or lack of in mattress that caused the backpain. My only troubles with the mattress is getting up! And stopping the cats from popping it.
I chose to sleep on the floor in order to save space. I moved to a small apartment with a small room, and my bed was too big. I always keep the entire place very clean so its fine, and it also feels good on my back.
I greatly enjoyed hearing your perspective on sleeping on the floor! I've slept on a regular mattress for the last couple years and really enjoyed that. I plan to get a futon in my next place and hope my partner is keen on it. I find it so neat, it can be rolled up and stored away, doesn't take up space and it must make cleaning so much easier! :)
Maybe you'll have a chance to try floor-sleeping somewhere on your trip! It is pretty popular here in Asia. I agree that the versatility is wonderful =)
I sleep on a tall bed because I can't get up from the floor due to arthritis. My mattress is memory foam and it is the only thing that helps my joint pain.
I have a hard time getting up and down from the floor, would it be possible to put a futon on some sort of platform that raises it off the floor a bit?
Yes, you can put them on a regular platfrom bed or even better, a japanese tatami platform bed. They are both firm flat surfaces raised up from the floor =)
Korean hard beds are awesome and heated! It's raised like a platform bed but when you lay your futon on top you only need a light blanket on most nights.
Ive been floor sleeping for 6months and I can say that it is the best option for my body type, which is hypermobile. When I sleep on a marshmallow man mattress, it feels like my body is imploding on itself and my shoulders want to touch. I would wake up barely able to bend over from low back pain. After sleeping on the floor, I can breathe fully, I wake up and can bend over and touch my toes with zero back pain or stiffness. A soft mattress puts strain on the tissues because you are sleeping in a way that doesnt support the spine so the hips drop lower and the shoulders turn into hunchback mode. When you are hypermobile your connective tissues are very lax and so they benefit from more rigid support, which is probably a reason you get some people swearing by it and others shunning it.
Would it be weird to have a futon on a bed frame? A flat bedframe. My partner has a hip issues (from birth) and could never sleep on the floor (despite your willingness with your scoliosis).
Lauren Fry. Being much older now , the bed frame is a must for me. A hard thick board, then a futon on it is necessary for getting up. Works vey well for me. I miss the days when I could sleep on the floor. Also floor toilets are better for your health. Your legs get a workout regularly.
I sleep on a 4 inch foam mattress on wood. I started it years ago to save space by building my bed higher and I didn't bother with the springs. My back, which had been causing me pain a lot, felt even worse for about a week. Then the pain went away and I felt much better than I had ever felt. I also found my arm never fell asleep during the night after that from sleeping on it. Lately, I took up backpacking and sleep on a convoluted pad that is about a 1/2 inch think and I sleep amazing well, although I turn more often because I sleep on my side. I'm actually thinking about sleeping on it at home.
The only reason why I love sleeping on the floor is I'm not worried about: "is there any ghost under my bed?" 😢
But, ghost will laying beside you

Hi there just checking on my email address I will be in touch with you tomorrow morning I will call you

That ghost will be standing over you and watch you sleep.

The last timeI slept on the floor I woke up with a terrible hangover.
Don’t you hate that? I don’t miss those days.

"don't care a gnat's pecker", I love it. Glad to see something more than just the same old 4 letters words...
@@tigerrbabyy123 It's cool down there right!? Plus, I can just turn over onto my tile floor and I cool off in minutes.
Cynthia Hawkins Thanks for share the story. I would like to know you put futon on wooden floor or marble floor in your house ?
And that’s how you win the game of life
I've been sleeping on the floor now for 1 year .
Do you use a pillow?
Try camping pads!
Got the same experience as you. Nowadays i can't sleep on anything soft. No cushion possible neither. Adios back and neck pains
Andrea N but you have the pressure of the floor pushing back against you and not the sag of the bed so it does make a lot of sense
Omg sooooo true
i just shoveled some dirt into the corner of my room to sleep on. Much more natural

I went to the website. $427.00! I think I will buy a sleeping bag.
Yea! Why not? You don't need a futon to experience the benefits =)
jessicaaudate yikes! and she say they get ruined in under a year? oh like hanging it outside is a good idea-maybe if you have the means to do so and even then not always a good idea. but I highly doubt hanging it is going to make it last that much longer. man alive. she must be getting money for this video.
If you actually read what she said, "With improper care, they can be ruined in under a year." Improper being the keyword. Hanging it outside dries sweat and anything else and keeps it from growing bacteria.
R Walston yea hanging it under the sun helps kill bacterias and bed bugs
😂 you are a legend I just love it go for high quality sleeping bags it will do you wonders
Yes just sitting on the floor i realise I don't need a different desk for every activity, the floor is big enough to do any activity!
Yes! I find it comfortable too. Thanks for sharing =)
Wow! That is a pretty crazy story. I can completey understand it though, I love sleeping on the floor too =)
I couldn't afford a bed for awhile in my new apartment. My floor is concrete with hard tiles on top. I got a basic platform bed and memory foam mattress, I love it.... ha. Might be the type of floor you sleep on. If it's wood (like I think it should be, or in Japanese homes it is) it's probably more comfortable.
I regret buying my $1200 mattress. It is extremely uncomfortable and started sagging after only a year.
khawla
I couldn't agree with you more👍
U gave away a $1,000 bed away u didn't get ur money back from the store or anything
Might take a while to get used to though!
Because you are westernized
I'm watching this on my bed

I appreciate your opinion on beds, blood vessels and bone structure, but I feel expanding your experience to generalize in a scientific way is dangerous. Or give sources.

TaraWhiteTalks love you.
Charles Kuhn I agree.
+TaraWhiteTalks actually better to put it on something like Tatami or Wood floor. Because sleeping on the floor directly is not good for your health.
I sleep on a futon (with tatami) for over 20 years now and i would never to back!
Japanese futons plus tatami is the ultimate combination. I've done a little research on tatami too. Besides being more comfortable than a fully hard floor, it also has its own set of benefits. Glad to hear you have had a positive experience =)
Would you share where you buy tatami from in the US? Thanks!
I live in Europe so I unfortunately don't know...
which benefits do you get for sleeping on futon and tatami? :D don't know if I should spend the extra money for the tatami :D
Why we chatting on the doorstep?
Are you gonna invite us in or what?
Did you get the futon from her link? I want to get one shipped but I’m scared of what sites are trustworthy
gecco147 Are you still sleeping on the floor?
Still feeling benefits?
Thank you
My husband and I own a tri folding mattress that we keep in the living room and acts like a small couch when it's not being used.
When I was pregnant I couldn't get comfortable anywhere! Until I stay over at my in-laws house and I slept on futon on the floor and just loved it!
I was told the weight gain of the mattress isn't due to bacteria (they weigh next to nothing), but due to skin cells and (dead) mites.
That's a myth spread by the mattress industry to make you buy a mattress every handful of years. No way can dust mites and your skin cells gather so much and add so much weight.
So buy a mattress protector. Problem solved
Cris C Do a little research friend. 80% of dust is just skin cells. Humans shed a lot and it is quitr fascinating once you find out. Especially of the matress is shared, you are in for a whole lot of dead skin in that mattress
Yeah that's... Still gross.
wazzup105 that is so disgusting. I feel sick
Nicely put xxx
You’re so well-spoken. Wow. I love these types of comments on UA-cam
This was really interesting to watch. I loved the idea of being able to use the bedroom for another purpose throughout the day, without a bed taking up any space!!
Yeah, that's what I'm excited about. I can do my morning yoga routine after putting the futon away. I'm excited to do this!
Hi... I've been sleeping on a cotton filled futon placed on the floor since my sixteenth birthday. I can't explain why, I simply feel so much more refreshed each day. I totally understand this method isn't for everyone but it works for me... All my friends think it's strange but I love it.
I don’t have to put my blankets away, I sleep in the closet. Nice and dark.
I live in a small apartment and it’s so useful to remodel my room into a tatami. I can just roll up my blanket and futon and put it in my closet and move my small desk and cushions out. It saves space.
I've been sleeping on the floor for 16 years. Started when I was 15 cause I was really into Hinduism and renouncing luxury, it just stuck with me
i made my first japanese bed purchase and i literally can’t wait for it i hate having a mattress and it’s all i’ve been thinking about for the past week!
I used to suffered from severe back pain...from neck to lower back...It was an awful feeling....Since, we moved to our new house...I decided to threw my bed away...and now,I do sleep on the floor...And Noticed,no more backpain!
That is awesome! I'm so happy for you, thanks for sharing =)
I am 70 years old and my husband and I have slept on the floor for about 10 years. I noticed that just the action of pushing my body up from the floor has increased my flexibility and upper body strength. I have much less difficulty pushing off the the snow when I fall when skiing.
Wow! That is so interesting, thanks for sharing!

(The idea of a futon I presented was the type that is a convertible style futon couch - not sure if that's considered a true Japanese futon.)
The last time I moved apartments, all my furniture had been picked up by the moving company but I spent one last night in the old apartment to get some cleaning done.
(One of my neighbors did that and she said that even after about four times of changing the cleaning solution, the water from the carpet was still brown...ick.)
That aside, I'm very interested in checking out the links you have posted for the futons you recommend. Thank you again!
I can't sleep on the floor any more. I get such a cramp and can't move bummer Thanks for sharing though :)
Hi, Tara
I lived in South Korea while teaching there, and the traditional YO is not nearly as comfortable as a Futon, although I am sure that Koreans would disagree with that.
Hi, Tara
Well, over time I got used to sleeping in my bed again, although I do miss having the heat from the Ondol below me (ha, ha).
I dearly miss the Ondol too! What a wonderful invention!! If I am ever able to build a house one day.. that is going to have to be a feature ;)

Very sorry to hear about your wife. Totally agree about waking up refreshed.
I'm glad you found something that works for you too. Sleep is so important! Thanks for sharing =)
if you sleep on futon... you are not sleeping on the floor, and everything you said is void (ignoring it's mostly wrong). i've slept on a yoga mat for two years after a back injury, and it was great.
If you sleep on a yoga mat, you are not sleeping on the floor. You are sleeping on a yoga mat.
Lucian lmao got em.
This is very interesting... I have scoliosis and suffer from tension headaches, maybe sleeping on the floor could help me! Thank you for making this video!
void in chains idk your eating habits but cutting out gluten and dairy help with headaches
As a physiotherapist I tell you to look for scientific stuff. The important is the position of the body and where you put the pillows. You wanna stop a sciatica or a lumbar stenosis ? Different pillows positions for different problems.
I tried this before and you inspired me to do it tonight. I use a yoga mat and a few blankets as alternatives.
Greisy H hahaha! I was literally just thinking I would try the same tonight with my yoga mats!!😀👐🏼
If you want a simpler solution, get a thick mattress topper to use
cetriya's Art n Comics Channel It works good too. Also, not too expensive.
I've slept on the floor since my 30s. I use an air mattress.
Iris Gross what air matress do you use!? All the ones i try break after a month
yes how do you find one that will hold up for more than a couple of weeks
so what are you 31 now how many replacements have you bought

Stephanie In the wild Good info. Thanks!
I don't find sleeping on the floor comfortable :/
+Nohemymimis That is completely understandable! I defo went through a transition period as my body learned to adjust. I also found futons to be much better than sleeping on the floor only, which was a bit of a shock initially =)
I like sleeping on the floor but it makes my ribcage compress (which hurts when I stand up).
Also scorpions.
Mabie you need little help falling asleep:)
Same.
My lower back throbs and my hips kill me the next day. I weigh 130lbs and just can’t do it without thick medium firm material.
And in Pakistan we call them "talae"
Using them since childhood
Isn't it amazing? If I had to guess, I would think more people in the world sleep on the floor than in beds.
In México they are known as petate and are more organic and environmentally clean.
Looks like a very slight upgrade from a sleeping bag.
I have lower back problems. While in the military I was told the best thing is to sleep on the floor. So I tried it a couple of days. One thing I noticed right away is the lower portion of my back starts to feel like it is being decompressed. If sleeping on the floor is not for you a firm mattress is the way to go.
Gravity doesn't push you down. -physics
Does the bottom of your cupboard not collect dust. Usually that is a dusty area.
+Hazel Frei-Selby We don't really notice dust. There isn't much in the closet and it gets cleaned regularly. Hope the helps!
Hazel Frei-Selby
That's the reason lot of Asian house force you to take off shoes and wipe floor after you left.
H FS as long as you clean the floors regularly its a good space
It's called vacumming and dusting.
I sleep on the floor, mostly because I like when the bugs can just run right up on the mattress.
Clean your house.
Wonderful! Glad you got to experience futon sleeping during your time in Japan =)
Still, I imagine they want a personal recommendation from a person who knows futons well and may very well recommend one brand over another.. or suggest which brands or styles to avoid.
buttarain27 I thought I was the only one who thinks that...
Asking questions is a form of research.
sleeping on the floor has immensely helped with my sciatic pain. first few days were difficult. but waking up with minimal soreness is great.
Sleeping on the bones makes me stiff. I cant sleep more then an hour on the floor
Made the switch this year.
Love this, super informative, thank you🙌🏻
Thank you for watching :)
i cant get a futton, but we bought top matreses, and i am sleeping on the floor, only on my top matress, and recently without a pillow, and now i even sleep on the side, without any problems. for hygienic purposes, i took out the cussion of the top matress, and once a year, both parts are machine washed, air dried and lay cussion first, coat second, and sheets third, i also use 100% woolen blankets. i do recomend placing dark to black towel where your pillow should be. the darkness helps the eyes and mind relax faster. since sleeping on the floor without a pillow, i only need 6 hours to gain the rest i once needed 8 hours for
BTW, tried air mattress as well and that Was worse for my back. So if you use air mattress regularly it will damage back over time. It was designed for temporary sleep situations like camping or guests. Not for permanent sleep situations. Thank you for this video. With your back disorder you know the wrath of beds and damage they cause. Blessings.
Good to know. I can imagine that air mattresses don't offer much resistance.
Watching this on my deluxe foam adjustable bed
How fat are you
Wow rude much?
Lol

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. I'm glad that you found something that helps your joint pain!
i slept on a gym floor once and i felt like i got hit by a car for like 3 days
Not at all, that is very common with futons. You can even find tatami platform bed frames!
Lauren Fry. Being much older now , the bed frame is a must for me. A hard thick board, then a futon on it is necessary for getting up. Works vey well for me. I miss the days when I could sleep on the floor. Also floor toilets are better for your health. Your legs get a workout regularly.
I can relate to that! I use to sleep on the floor but with age it just gets so difficult to get up! platform would certainly help
for 15 yrs I have been sitting up in a chair ,and I love it
I prefer sleeping on a bed because roaches, centipedes and other bugs...
jacijune ?
Those creepy crawlies can find their ways into beds as well.
They climb up walls, they will climb your bed frame.
you mean midnight snacks?
Eeeeewwww u have roaches, who even have those these days
I tried a futon, but didnt care for it. Went back to straight on the floor. Floor + 432hz deep brown noise with a good subwoofer = Sleep Utopia.
The prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, recommended everyone to sleep on the floor and now science understand why🤷🏽♀️
What about stuff that might be unseen crawling on the floor?
I prefer a chaise I like to keep my head raised.
Imagine going to a sleepover and being able to bring your whole bed
I have done this!
