    You should put the gas cans in a little box under the truck. A company local to where I live called Ed Castro landscaping had a similar set up with gas cans in the box. When the guys went to crank the mower in the morning. There was an explosion. One of the employees died a few days later from Burns.

    I did this two years ago and this was the absolute best decision I’ve made! I love this idea. Also a gas ⛽️ caddy works best for me because of the same reason. It has wheels and a gas handle for your crew

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +2

      I am trying to tell these guys!!! Glad you like it too!
      I bought a couple Flo n' Go Gas Caddy's a couple years back and my guys destroyed them! If I get new cans I am thinking about the SureCan, but I don't like spending money on stuff like that...meaning trimmer racks, blower racks, etc. IMO if the can holds gas and we have a funnel we are good to go! LOL
      When I ran the traditional truck and trailer set up, we just put the trimmers, blowers, and cans in the bed of the truck. I think I got that going 'cheap' idea from my boss before I started my company. 😅😅😅

    Good video bro. I started with a truck and trailer. I finally bought a Isuzu npr cab over with a landscape body and wish I did that from day 1. Try getting more of those hooks you have trimmers on and put the handle you care the blower with through that so you can get off the floor in case a employee forgets to set parking brake on a mower. Employees never treat it like you will!!

      Thanks. Yes, those gates were. Unfortunately we didn't have time for that fabricator to make them for all 3 trucks before we needed them in action. At least we got 2 built like that...the other truck's gates were much heavier and harder to operate!

    • @LawnCrack

      It took me 7-8 years to get these trucks...keep doing your thing and the money will start to stack up. They really are not that expensive though. I paid $8300 or $8700 each for the trucks themselves directly from Uhaul( I did buy 3 at once but still they rent trucks, they don't want to sell trucks, they want them gone...so haggle with them!). Uhaul wraps them in white vinyl to cover their logos. I wanna say it was like $900 a truck for logos all the way around and then $2700 for the gates to be fabricated by a local guy. That $2700 could be less if you find the right fabricator.
      The benefits and time savings is crazy. I wish I would have lost the trailers years ago!
      Thanks for watching and for the comment. I really appreciate it.

      Welcome. Thanks. The truck is a little bit of an investment but it really improved efficiency and reduced overall costs. I have since sold Loyal Green and am helping a good friend get his business off the ground. He is using his pickup to get started but the first dedicated work vehicle will be a Uhaul converted. I will try to document it with the fabricator and everything.

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +2

      I will reach out to the fabricator. Josh Hall told me about Wow Ramps. These may a cheaper, quicker, easier option ALTHOUGH I have not seen them in person or ever used them. If they work like they should, this may be the best option out for ramps for these trucks. Super Lawn Trucks also has pre-fabricated gates for these trucks that are more expensive than Wow Ramps, but similar to the cost for me to have them fabricated. I end up spending $2700 or so per ramp when it was all said and done. One guy quoted me $2k per ramp and the other $1k, but they both ran way over budget... Very informative video. I was toying with the use Uhaul truck purchase for the 3rd crew but wasn't sure of their dependability. I know that their prices are different per location, but What's their average cost in your area and do you find them dependable?

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +7

      I got them for $8400 each. They want to rent trucks...not sell them. They just want to get rid of them. I think these were listed for $9,300 at the time. I have the 17' model. They are 2006 and I bought them with on average 90K miles in late 2015. I did just have to put an engine in one but I know my guys ran it without oil in it...so that explains that. I would highly recommend them. You could possibly do a smaller one. There is another company around here that uses a smaller one. The gates cost me about $2700 each and the graphics were $900 each. It was wrapped in all white vinyl when we got them.

  • @RicardoVargas-dy9tf
    @RicardoVargas-dy9tf 5 років тому +1

    The biggest downside I see to these trucks are the shitty gas mileage on the Ford gas engines. Other than that it's a nice setup with those ramps

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  5 років тому +1

      I never got into tracking my gas cost down to the mile or anything super detailed like that, but from a quick glance, it was not anything noticeable from the mileage my old F-250 and F-350 pickups where getting.
      And the time it saves while in traffic and in tight spots more than likely outweighed any fuel cost increase.

    Would you say the fuel cost for this set up is more expensive than a truck and trailer?

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +1

      I think there is very little difference in fuel cost, but the time savings, not having trailer tires and lights to replace, the guys are more comfortable driving these and we can get in and out of spots that would be tough for most people with a truck and trailer, the fact I no longer need to rent space to operate my business, etc. makes this setup the way to go for me.
      We only mow out of this truck. So, if you are still needing a truck to also be good for mulch and prune jobs, etc., this may not be a good fit.

    I do like the trucks but definitely not for a full service landscaper or even a full service landscape maintenance service. Where would you put your cuttings or debris. I would still prefer the truck and trailer set up by far. You should consider a hauling business with these types of trucks. Huge money maker for these types of rigs. Good luck to ya!

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +1

      I was a full service landscaper for years...had trucks, 16' trailers, daully's, dump trucks, dump trailers, etc. and didn't make much money. Switched to mowing out of these trucks and spraying out of F250s. Got my hours involved in my business down to on average 5 per week in 2017 and made more money than ever. You should consider paying attention to what I am saying!!! LOL...kinda just kidding...but not really!!!

      I have 3 of these trucks - $8,400 each for the 14' size Uhaul purchased from Uhaul (Used). $2700 each for the ramps to be fabricated. $900 each for the logos on to be put truck (It comes wrapped in white vinyl from Uhaul).

    • @LawnCrack

      Talk with Uhaul about the price they want for the truck...they are in the business of renting trucks, not selling them. They want them off their lot! They wanted $10,200 per truck and I got them down to $8,400.

Here is where you can find them directly from Uhaul, they have other sizes: www.uhaul.com/TruckSales/ - Remember they are in the business of renting trucks, not selling them, you can work with them on the price!

    Hey Ryan I know this video was from 3 years ago but I wanted to know how these Uhaul trucks did for you? I'm looking for one over this winter to get before the next mowing season starts. I found a 2006 17' Ford E450 for sale at a local Uhaul place and it has 128,000 miles on it and they are asking $9,495 for it. I asked a mechanic friend of mine and he said that some of those Fords have had some major engine issues. So I thought I'd ask and see how yours did for you before throwing out an offer after I test drive it this weekend.

      Moving to this style truck for our mowing crews was seriously a game-changer for us.
      The numbers on the truck you noted are not ideal to me. I would search for another truck with under 100,000 miles. One of the ones I got only had 78k. I think the others were just over and under 100k miles.
      I did have to replace an engine in one of mine, but pretty confident one of my bonehead employees just botched the oil change...
      Other than that which I really think was user error, we didn't have any issues out of our trucks.
      Uhual keeps very detailed maintenance records which they should let you see before you purchase.
      Also, remember the rent trucks, not sell them! If you feel the mentioned truck is solid, I'd tell them $6,900 take it or leave it and continue to find another with lower miles in the meantime. I think $9,400 is a fair price for a low milage 17' Uhaul with a clean maintenance record and very little cosmetic issues.

      Thanks Ryan for your feedback and tips! I appreciate it. I'm going to continue to look and see if I can get one under 100,000 miles. I'll keep you posted on it and thanks for your help. Take care.

    Have you had good luck with reliability on the vehicles so far ?

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +2

      Yes. They are pretty solid. They had 72k, 96k, and 108k miles on them when I got them. I didn't have to replace an engine in one but that was a result of the incompetence of an employee. It was actually the 72k mile truck that got the new engine...go figure!
      These have the V10. Plenty of power...I really like this setup for so many reasons.

    Hi Ryan. Doug from Cincy. What do you pay for an experienced crew leader? Crew member? Just trying to get an idea as ill be hiring full time 2018 season

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +3

      Hey Doug. I am a big fan of percentage pay. Just wrote made a webpage dedicated to it on our website LawnCrack.com/percentage-pay-lawn-care-industry/ - But I just recommend paying them as much as you can...at least once they prove they are going to show up, give 100%, learn, and have a positive attitude doing it.
      I only pay by percentage now...but if hourly I would not start anyone below $10/hr. It is just nothing in today's world. No young and no experience doesn't allow to be paid much more. A good crew member probably $13-15 and a good crew leader $15-22. My guys make between $18-28/hr if you take their percentage pay divided by hours worked.
      It really just comes down to your numbers. It is very important to have your jobs priced right to be able to afford employees. If you haven't checked out the profitability calculator on the LawnCrack.com website you can play around with your numbers and see what you can afford to pay and still produce a profit.

      I know plenty of guys that are perfectly content running solo forever.
      The thing is if you can just teach other people to do it and create systems in your business, you hire people and let them make you money.
      Solo is easier but very much limiting and very much like owning a job.

    do your workers have to have a special license to drive the truck?

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +1

      They just need a DOT Medical card...same requirements as driving any commercial vehicle under 26,001 pounds but over 10,001 pounds. You then need to comply with all the DOT regulations like normal...

      LawnCrack That's a good idea to use those uhaul trucks for your business. Here in l.a. it doesn't work because the city of l.a. will fine you for parking that big truck on the street. I would need to rent a yard to park it. Plus parking here in l.a. sucks ! So instead I bought a ex-at&t truck for $4k. It comes with a commercial camper,so I put all my machines in there and it's safe from the elements and thieves.

    I thought these trucks have ramps installed for the hand trucks?

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +1

      They do, but they are not wide enough for the mowers to ride up them. I believe on one of my trucks the ramp is still on the truck, but the other two were made by someone else and he had to remove them to allow the new gates to fit.

    Do customers ever give you guys a problem about not bagging grass? I’m in New England it seems like people are set with that

    • @LawnCrack
      @LawnCrack  6 років тому +1

      No one around here bags grass. I think it is a location/type of grass thing that I learned after I starting making these videos.
      Some company's do have a bagger for their walk behinds, but they use it when cutting a strip of grass between the sidewalk and street for example when on the non-street side it is a mulch bed or some rare situation like that. We all just buy a shoot blocker or fabricate a flap to keep the grass within the deck in tight areas.

      +LawnCrack agreed. I have been doing this since 2000. After graduating with my turf management degree in 2008 my business exploded. However over the years we have had to change the way we operate. Unfortunately we turn down tons of work each year and have resorted to me landscaping solo with a bobcat. We don't work outside of my small hometown Raymore mo. Any advice on how you have successfully found good employees.? Thanks.

      I just realized today that UA-cam doesn't notify me of replies in comment strings! Sorry for the delay. I honestly do not! I am very sorry. I have 2 good friends I have known for 15+ years running my mowing crews, my girlfriend answers the phone, and 2 of my brother's friends also work for my company.
      I know a lot of people are against friends and family working in the business, but it has worked out really well for me. They care a little more because they know me personally and I don't have to worry about them stealing, which has been a pretty major issue in the past. I believe they only stole from me and not my customers, so that is a plus! Got hit up for $1700 in equipment by an employee in one instance. That was about it for me hiring people I didn't know.
      If someone can solve this issue, they would be super rich!

      +LawnCrack no worries I appreciate the response. Very true. I will say our best employees have been friends or mutual friends. I've lost a couple of great guys to the union and one to the railroad (we couldn't begin to compete) I never dealt with the stealing too bad. However we had several guys wreck trucks and one guy run a mower down the side of a car at an apartment complex. We even had a guy run a plow truck into a parked car at a Pizza Hut while we were plowing. ( I'm surprised our insurance didn't drop us). I have horror stories for days.
