The power of Ed's voice will not only break glasses, but will knock down the chandeliers. What a gift. I met him in person, but I would love to hear him sing in person. Thank you God for him.
Ed Ames still has the most incredible voice I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. This is one of the most excellent performances of his lifetime. He still has it 200%. Love the man and his music. Fan since 1967. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless.
My wife and I have loved Ed Ames since the late 1960s. I actually remember him and his brothers when they performed together in the early 1950s. We bought 2 or 3 Albums of his and I sttill have them. We were lucky to see him perform in Man of La Mancha at the Starlight Theater in K.C. years ago. He has one of the best, if not the best, version of The Impossible Dream. What a rich voice!!
Ed Ames, always a great performer with a beautiful singing voice. Now in his 80's his voice is still magnificent, which can not be said for his others of his generation.
A fine performance by this great singer. He used to go for the final high note when he was younger, but who could blame for not striving for the impossible at his time of live. Ed's voice aged as well as he did himself and it became softer and richer with age. There are no more Ed Aymes around these days.
Perfectly said. I especially don’t blame him for doing the extra high note, b/c other than his very advanced age, the key is a full tone higher in this performance than the recording 44 yrs earlier. The 1964 recording is done on Ab major, & this performance (live 2008) is Bb major.
At his age, the interpretation is richer for the timbre in his voice. I find this deeper in feeling that the more technically precise version of his youth. The empathy helps better convey the intent of the Lyrics. Great Job Ed!
This song has always been one of my favorites, & Ed Ames' performance gave me CHILLS!! WOW!! He still has it after all these years! Hope he'll be singing for many more years to come. Thanks so much for sharing
Robert left us too soon in 2008, unfortunately. There is a clip of him on youtube here, singing 2 months before he passed away. He was a stellar performer too. Let's not compare professionals of all stripes.
Yes he does indeed skip the final high note. But he is 81 here. I usually take people to task for praising singers for singing well in their sixties. Many singers do just fine in their middle sixties. But eigthies are a different matter. Ames is a real singer who responds to the big tune with a strong line. Many of the pop singers like Jack Jones or Robert Goulet simple forget to sing. Ames is a real pleasure.
his voice was so smooth and silky when he was young. but it's very surprising that his voice is still powerful and well preserved at his current age. toni bennet just try to "rap" through songs nowadays but ed sings the songs at the right pitch and tone. great singer
Eu admiro MT esse artista queria MT saber notícias dele . Ed Ames é um artista de de peso .Ed Ames grande artista grande ator . Um ser humano MT especial ... sou seu fã de carteirinha número 1
I love his style! Ed Ames is marvelous as whatever he puts himself into being. For a man of his years, I am deeply touched by his love of his career. Whatever he does, he puts his whole heart into it. Is there a way to get the original? Inahlee
What an amazing performer! It's a phrase used far too much these days, but they really DON'T make them like that anymore. What performer today could possibly hold a candle to talent like that?
As far as I am concerned, there is NO talent today!!!!!!! We are lucky to still have Ed Ames. Most singers IF they live to his age, their voice is GONE!!!!!!
+Paul Miller I have to say Tony Bennett is good too. I remember him, when I was a kid, singing "For Once in My Life." But, yes, Ed Ames is, by far, the superior singer!
Actually, that's the way the song itself is written. If you listen to Richard Kiley in the original, he does not hit the high note . . . nor does the chorus in the end. I too found this frustrating, but don't put it on Ames . . . he sung it correctly. The movie version hits the high note (for Don Quixote, not the chorus). Many singers prefer the high note, but it's not the original. The idea may be that the 'unreachable' point is in the music itself.
In 1967 this song was the Sr. class song, Midland lee HS Midland Texas. Of the 430 sen;iors 25 died in the rice paddie of 'Nam. 225 of West Texas finest sons died. Guess we were trying to thr unrightable wrong right. Ben Weihrich USMC '69-'75 Proud grad of "Saigon U"
He received a 3 min standing ovation. so audience was not so frustrated. people like yourself are called knit pickers, but what is worse is that you are incorrect
Clearly a much finer voice than most other octogenarians but no where near that precise control and easy range of his earlier years. This song absolutely MUST be sung (in public) ONLY by someone who still "has it." Sadly, Ed Ames should now let his body of recorded work do his "talking" or stick to the quiet, gentle tunes we all know and love.
What a stupid comment from some 1 who can’t hear the strong, vibrant, rich sound that comes from Ed Ames. Not to mention his impeccable breath management here. He sounds better than almost every popular singer we have now.
Why didn't He hit the High Note that should Be Hit at Last Phrase??? Until that Second His Singing Has Been Perfect!!!!!!!!! So It's Really SHAME!!!!!!!!! That Left Audience Only Frustration!!!!!!!!!
You’re joking Rt? You can’t be serious. It’s a miracle he can sing to such an insane extent at 81 YRS OLD. Not only that, but he raised the key a full tone from the version he did 44 yrs earlier. Plus, a D4 (sustained) for an 81 yr old Dramatic Baritone is already pretty high. Clearly the audience disagrees w/you, so you’re just speaking for yourself at this point. The only frustration any 1 has here is at your asinine comment.
The power of Ed's voice will not only break glasses, but will knock down the chandeliers. What a gift. I met him in person, but I would love to hear him sing in person. Thank you God for him.
R.I.P. Ed. You were the best!
I loved Ed Ames when I was a small child and I still love him at 53.
He will live forever.
Absolutely amazing performer you are gonna be so missed RIP

ED IS SINGING UP WITH GOD NOW.
My wife and I have loved Ed Ames since the late 1960s. I actually remember him and his brothers when they performed together in the early 1950s. We bought 2 or 3 Albums of his and I sttill have them. He was a fine actor and what a glorious voice he had! RIP.
Absolutely wonderful!!! Bless you, Ed Ames!!!!

Thank you so much
HE IS AWESOME! Terrific musician. Interpretation -- that's what it is about. Always professional and so wonderful to his audiences. Love this guy.
Ed Ames, always a great performer with a beautiful singing voice. Now in his 80's his voice is still magnificent, which can not be said for his others of his generation.
I saw Ed Ames in Man of La Mancha, Camelot, Shanendoah, over the years. He was a great actor and singer and perfect for these roles.
A fine performance by this great singer. He used to go for the final high note when he was younger, but who could blame for not striving for the impossible at his time of live. Brings tears to the eyes, he's so good...
Fabulous. A testimony to taking care of ones self, staying busy and yes, a degree of good luck.
Wow!! What a magnificent talent is Mr Ed Ames

Saw him sing this live in that play. Starlight theater when I was way much younger. Still my first singer crush.
Saw him at the outdoor theater Starlight Theater playing in Man of LA Mancha. A fan since then. A voice and a presence that has no equal
This song has always been one of my favorites, & Ed Ames' performance gave me CHILLS!! WOW!! He still has it after all these years! Hope he'll be singing for many more years to come. Thanks so much for sharing

+originalsbyterry Ed is 80 years young He will be 89 this July

Agree about Ames, but Goulet was also a Real Singer, moreso than Jack Jones, who I generally wouldn't put in the same league with the other two.
he did so hit it
Amazing!

Great talent, always is. RWB
kig kir , can say that again!!
I wish there was a biography of the brothers. I'd love to read it.

Give the man a break! He's what, in his 80s now? You can't expect him to be able to hit that incredibly high note so many times in one session!
q belleza mi mingo
I would spend my bottom dollar to listen to this man. Tony Bennet? nah.
+Paul Miller I have to say Tony Bennett is good too. I remember him, when I was a kid, singing "For Once in My Life." But, yes, Ed Ames is, by far, the superior singer!
Bennett's voice turned to leather years ago, but once upon a time in his youth he had a superb voice.

Talented man, I am surprised he did not have a bigger career . . . . Did he, like his colleague Fess Parker, have success in business?
He received a 3 min standing ovation. so audience was not so frustrated. people like yourself are called knit pickers, but what is worse is that you are incorrect
he and his brothers were singin long before Mingo... or is that Mongo....?
Mongo was Alex Karras in "Blazing Saddles".
Clearly a much finer voice than most other octogenarians but no where near that precise control and easy range of his earlier years.
