- Hey there everyone, Today I will share with you 5 reasons why I believe winter in Shanghai is the worst. I have lived in way colder places, but I still have a worse time in Shanghai during winter than those other countries. So without further ado lets get to it!

Light snowfall is delightful.
Heavy snowstorms in northern US, western Japan, Canada and Siberia are a disaster.
How I remember winters in Shanghai, freezing humid, and so hard to get warm! Air conditioner makes your respiratory system worse so I couldn't have it turned on for a long time. Then I bought some electric heaters and they could barely heat the room. I would wear couple of sweaters to stay warm, then I asked my Chinese friends how they dealt with this kind of cold and they said they wear big coats at home, just like people outside. There is no central heating but there are no normal gas heaters either. I would always get sick every single winter and drink a lot of hot water.
Wearing big coats inside is not a good idea. You would be shivering once you go out

I've been in a city near Shanghai for nearly 10 years. The temperature in winter is not very low, but the humidity makes people feel cold. At that time, seldom people have heating at home.
Not only does the winter sucks there, but so does the summer. The summer is hot and humid. A few times, as a child, I felt a little hard to breath when it was going to rain.
Then I moved to Beijing. Though it is very dry and much colder in winter, I feel much better. So, I think Humidity is critical.
are you asthmatic? Did you find it hard to breathe in the Shanghai winter?

Asking for snow in a southern city? Hmmm...
what about early December around December 2? is it very cold already?
Maybe its known to you, but I would like to clearify that in northern area of China we still need to pay a bit for our central heating system, the price and valid service time depend on which city you are in, for my city (Altair阿勒泰）our heating starts in September/October and ends in April, that is almost half of the year heating because we really have a long and cold winter...and the price usually stays in between 25~30 RMB per square meter. So its actually quite the same situation when you compare the money spent on keep oneself warm...coldness=money eater
But in North China, if you have a formal job, you very likely get a heating subsidy from your emplyer which pretty much cover your home's heating expenses.

Yeah, tell me about it, I'm freezing while the temp is not even 10°, my fingers shaking and can't type to order Didi 😂😂😂 but, i love it, never regret having early winter in Shanghai

All the reasons are correct, only one I would like to say that you will see heavy snow maybe once every 5-10 years🤣
True! After 6 years here once I saw heavy snow, couple of years light snow and couple of years no snow
We don't have snow in the UK every year ! From the 70s -90s, we n had less than 10 snowing in the winters . In China they have a North south line. All places that are fall into the southern area have no central heating . In those days China was on its knees, poor and backward. Foreigers overan

Pollution in Shanghai? I was from Shanghai, but I am living in London right now. I rarely experienced bad air when I lived in Shanghai, yet in London, every day I commute to school or work place, the air is often very bad. I have also visited most European countries during summer holiday times, and I didn't feel their air quality is better than in China. So my experience is that Shanghai is actually much cleaner than many European countries.
I mostly agree with you. But Shanghai does have many cloudy and rainy days which makes people feel gloomy, similar to places like Seattle. I think some people mistakenly think it's bad air condition. I also heard people complaining about bad air quality in the cities such as Chongqing and Gui Yang. Again these are cities on the mountains that don't get a lot sunny days but have mainly gloomy cloudy days.

@Sergii Serpeninov Before the pandemic, I used to go to China for holidays EVERY year. Each time to at least 3 or more cities/towns.
I had been doing that for probably 10 years (maybe more).
I have YET to experience ONE SINGLE DAY of the so-called 'apocalyptic' air pollutions that the West talks about.
ONE SINGLE DAY!!! Just show me one single day.
( PS. I don't mean normal occasional air pollution days that you see all over Asia.

Pollution was pretty serious in Shanghai 10 years ago. But in recent 3 years, it's significantly changed. Sometimes I just lost counting the days with blue sky these days! Great improvement!
