Its been said before but, just in the middle of all the existential philosphical questions about reality, truth and meaning; "Beyond it all, do you recognize me?" hits pretty hard. Just Asuka as a person asking Sol and Aria if they can still see him as the old friend he once was, even after all the evil that hes done.

an interesting contrast between smell of the game (which is largely agreed to be an alternate Sol song) requiem (ino's theme) and Asuka's theme is the importance of gravity. For Sol (or the singer of smell of the game) Gravity is a obstacle to overcome preached by a demon to be important and called out as bullshit, Ino's theme depeicts falling to the ground as giving up and surcoming to fate. In both songs gravity is not ideal and is a burden on them. For Asuka however he has held himself as a holy ends justify the means individual who was trying to do the right thing and ended up making world shaking disasters. He sees gravity as essential for him to put himself back on the ground.
This shows that Asuka is counter almost antagonistic to other people's viewpoints even when striving for a similar goal.

So someone else gave a good TLDR on Asuka so I'm just going to add onto it from the strive perspective. Yes he is root cause of nearly EVERYTHING thats created the GG world (with the help of Sol and another character Aria), however it seems like strive is giving him his "redemption/atonement" arc. In fact his story mode when he was added is literally just a therapy session with himself, where his clone "counselor" says to his face bluntly "You hate yourself" which was a sort of revelation to himself.

He was perfectly fine before the gear incident that started all of this then til xrd he was just a mysterious robed figure. It was only in xrd when he showed his face with the weird wing covering his eye, which then changed the winged flower he has now when strive released. He may have lost it training, or it may just be that he thought it looks cool, but I dont think an explanation has been given.

@@SuperHexer123 I mean tracing back it's iconography, it's a Rozenkreuz, which is directly calling back to Rosicrucian Order of the 17th century.
They were a collective of equal parts intellectuals, and devout religion observers. They ultimately sought to blend religion and science together to improve society and such...which is ironically what Asuka had tried to do...in essence.
Obviously in the real world the idea is preposterously dumb, but in the world of Guilty Gear it's right at home.

Drift holds a special place in my heart because Happy Chaos is my favorite character and his theme fits him perfectly. I cant deny the pure spectacle of this though. When that last part hits I feel something fierce.
Also unrelated to the music I just wanted to give you credit for your choice in format. Ive seen alot of music reaction style channels and Ive seen the "watch it through and emote" strategy and the "pause and analyze" strategy but never did I consider how effective it is to use both in one video. Ive been binging your Guilty Gear videos until I got to your most recent one but I really like your style. Keep it up. Also listen to Rock Parade. Its no grand spectacle but its a damn fun song.

So, your assumption that Asuka is a God isn't too far off. While he didn't literally create the GG universe, he is the origin of the main conflicts, as he is the one who created the Gears and discovered magic, and subsequently became the most powerful mage within the GG universe, only rivaled in magical prowess by Happy Chaos.

Asuka R Kreutz, one of two users of the moniker That Man, has been a long time antagonist in the series. Rarely even playing a gameplay role (He was a boss character in Overture, but otherwise avoids fights) he's been mentioned as far back as the first game as the maker of the Gears, making him responsible for the deaths of millions and a century long war. It was all through goot intentions, wanting to save his friends, but his social inteptness and tendency to manipulate others around him has caused him to take villainous actions in his goals to save them and the world, and now seeks personal growth and redemption but has tried to do it by isolating himself from others He's one of the most powerful magic users in the series, surpassed only by his teach Happy Chaos.
However, this isn't exactly Asuka R Kreutz's them, it's Asuka R#'s theme, a clone made by R. Kreutz as both a test at creating artificial life, and to make a version of him that's more curious, outgoing, optimistic, and lacks his self loathing and feelings of guilt. He does this kind of as an exercise in offloading his personal development onto someone else, resulting in a more self aware, worldly, and forward thinking version of himself that's now trying to help him overcome his past problems. R# is about as powerful as R. Kreutz, even making his own, second, Asuka R#, but shares R. Kreutz's emotional constipation and tendency to push off personal growth onto someone else, which results in all three of them getting on each others' nerves in Arcade mode as a joint therapy/fight club sessions.
    R. Kreutz can be chosen as an alt to R# though with the same gamplay but different dialogue, and you actually play as him in arcade mode and fight the R#s, so it's both characters' theme sorta, fitting R. Kreutz's past but R#'s emotional outlook on everything and trying to get through to him.

I can definitely say that this song is it, this is Daisuke's magnum opus. Nothing can ever top this song imo. It's philosophical, it's rockin, it's beautiful. All things as they are is beautiful.
As for the actual lyrics and what they symbolize (it's really long but trust me it'll all make sense), Asuka was a man of great intelligence, and was a scientist with Sol (known as Fredrick back then) and Aria (Sol's gf/wife?) and was a founder of magic (Happy Chaos was the original founder and learned from him) and became extremely powerful and made man made Gears. Unfortunately, he got too caught up in the moment of making them that he didn't stop to think whether it was a good idea or not, and used Fredrick as the first Gear Project and "failed" (Canonically Sol is known as the Prototype Gear) and then used Aria to become a full Gear and actually succeeded, unfortunately, Aria, now known as Justice, had the Gear DNA take over get in a test run and retaliated and ran rampant. Eventually, Sol had to kill Justice, as he was the only one capable because he was made before Justice, and Justice could control other Gears, but not Sol. Hence the name of the series, "Guilty Gear". (Also somewhere in that time he also nuked Japan, don't worry about it :) ) ANYWAYS, this song is about finding the answers and truth to his actions and reflecting on them and seeing as he is pretty much repenting, it seems he feels pretty bad about it. Specifically the lyric "Beyond it all, do you recognize me?" Is shyly asking that, beyond his actions, is he still recognized as the friend that Fredrick and Aria loved? He's also gained immense knowledge from the book he has that shows the beginning and end of everything that happens in the GG universe. All this knowledge and actions with the line "What fact should we accept? The reality or the truth?" (The lyrics video has it wrong) being that reality and truth aren't the same, taking cues from Drift, Happy Chaos' theme. There's a lot more to this song but this is truly a grand finale to a series and I wouldn't have been mad if the seasons, and the game development, had ended with this character.

  • @gatr2897
    @gatr2897 10 місяців тому +5

Asuka is the most important character in Guilty Gear. He is That Man. He turned Fredrick into Sol Badguy, he turned Aria into Justice, and then he wiped Japan off the face of the Earth in an attempt to stop her from destroying the world, only for her to survive anyways and initiate the 100 year war on humanity known as the crusades. As far as I'm aware he then disappeared for most of if not the entirety of the crusades. With this much importance to the story it's crazy that his first playable appearance happened only a couple months ago. Despite all of those absolute atrocities I just listed, Asuka is far from a horrible person, but he made a lot of bad decisions which combined with corrupt government power lead to the events of the series. He wants to turn that all around though, so as of now he's doing whatever he can think to help humanity recover and be better than before.

Love this song, same for me this and Mirror of the World are my all time favorite Strive songs. The Gravity resonates with me especially since the song reflects some themes of Pink Floyd's work, especially the lines "all things as they are"(finale of Dark Side of the Moon) and "Gravity holds all the answers"(human connection themes, similar to stuff in Animals and The Division Bell).
To top it off, the song is SO prog rock for making the beginning the same as the end lmao. Definitely ties into how, even though Asuka has found his answer, he still hasn't solved the conflicts of the world, and only his faith and time will tell if his answer will stay true, or if he'll go back to searching for the 'facts we should accept'.

One of the things I think this song does very well is convey a sense of information density. That's a common theme within the Guilty Gear universe - information, zeroes and ones, are tangible things with weight and presence. The season two movie/plot/cutscene states pretty explicitly that the main obstacle they're overcoming is a high density information zone that not everyone can physically survive. The heavy metal bits are very non stop with the riffs in a way that feels like aggressive information overload.

Nobody has really gone into asuka's story too much
    Sooo
Asuka, A.K.A. "THAT MAN", the gear maker, or "The Devil" is the root cause of about half of the things in the Guilty Gear universe - with the other half being caused by "Happy Chaos", Asuka's teacher, the discoverer of magic, semi-divine being, and the only character with a stronger command of magic than Asuka.
UNFORTUNATELY, since the world at large had no idea who was actually behind the catastrophes that happy chaos (purposefully) and asuka caused (accidentally, usually because of HC, or sometimes the Universal Will, a malevolent force spawned by happy chaos), everything got blamed on "That Man" and it's all really confusing sometimes.
Asuka, is, fundamentally, a good person, though. He made the gears (magical superbeings who also don't really age) to try to keep his friends alive and together, but governments started using them as weapons. So he made Justice, a gear able to control other gears, which housed the soul of one of his friends (whom he planned to turn human again). Unfortunately, justice proved a perfect host for control by the Universal Will, who started replicating Justice in the air over japan as soon as she was activated, threatening the world (presumably by creating a black hole? Or some antimatter explosions or something.). So asuka had to manually override the original justice and nuke japan, vaporizing the entire country.
Ever since, he's been locked in a mental chess match with the Universal Will / Happy Chaos, desperately trying to thwart their plans while being blamed for them by the world at large while also trying to atone for the personal sins he committed when turning Sol and Aria into Gears by turning them back as close to human as he's able, so they can finally have their happily ever after.
So yeah, ultimately he's a super powerful mage who is wracked with guilt over the things he's done, desperately trying to atone for his crimes. By the end of strive's story, he's pretty much done so, and fucked off to go live on the moon and host the world's most depressing radio show by reading off real-time statistics to keep people informed about the state of the world.
