    I can see why she's the number one hostess. She takes care of her customers and spends time in knowing them (like remembering their birthdays), and has a great and charming personality. The way she and the interviewer laughed together, they looked like long time friends.

    • @professionalprocrastinator8103
      @professionalprocrastinator8103 Рік тому +31

      The word hostess comes from the french hôtesse which is the feminine form of hôte. The host is the person who hosts someone else, usually at their home or their establishment (hotel, manor, castle, restaurant, etc.)
      Hence the asian interpretation of the word has lost its initial meaning and is now synonymous of prostitution.

    • @PeachyMushroom
      @PeachyMushroom Рік тому +27

      Nah, I think this brand of "hostess" is a Japanese lingo and does not typefy the whole of Asia. Japanese are notorious for adapting anglocisms to term their various new, subculture inventions. I'd know because I spend a lot of time in India, and this concept of hostess doesn't exist here.
      Hostess as used here does not really have some kind of Asia-wide interpretation. It's just a word, and Japanese made their own take on it.

    • @nannerrammer

      Well, if you really think about it....wouldn't the "host/hostess" meaning in Japan /Korea seem more appropriate than from what you would do in the US/UK? They are literally hosting customers and making sure they're cared for and having a good time . how can being a host at a party or hosting a party seem to be completely different from working as a host at a restaurant. sometimes, English makes no damn sense.

    I work in customer service and my coworkers ask how I can be so nice to people after a while, and I always say that acting is more exhausting than being genuine. I try to have empathy for each customer and assume the best intentions and give them the benefit of the doubt. At the same time, there are days I'm more tired and have to pretend to be more chipper than I feel. Watching Hoshino interact with her client takes it to a whole other level. She's in the industry of being genuine and friendly, even with people she may not have a connection with. She has to find ways to feel like a friend but at the same time, she probably always has a certain part of her brain that is strategizing. She's an actress in a sense but one that needs to feel like it's not an act. That's hard to do day in and day out, her business would suffer if she appeared to not be feeling well or appeared to be in a bad mood or just a bit tired.

      @@catpaws1913 Firstly, most customers are at higher level hostess bars are there for business on company expense accounts. They usually bring in their own clients to socialize after a day of negotiations, so acting like a boor may get them reprimanded at work. Secondly there is usually a senior Ma-Ma san at the club who will take them aside and talks to anyone who gets too out of hand. Then men know that touching is a no-no, but a hand on the shoulder or on the arm is left up to the hostess. Look, prostitution is almost legal in Japan and men have a huge variety of options if they want to buy sex. A hostess bar is not the place to find a willing sex partner. That said, there will always be jerks and you just remove any stray hands with a smile and act like nothing happened. If it happens again, just call over Ma-Ma. She will switch you to another table, a new /senior hostess will take your place which happens all night anyways, she will sit down with the guy and she will order him a coffee. Usually any customer who acts rudely will be very apologetic and may offer a nice cash tip or ask to take you and a couple of other hostesses out out to dinner to atone. This line of work (women serving higher class/rich men, excluding sex) is deeply rooted in Eastern Asian Culture. Women in the past not only had to be beautiful and graceful but also skilled in one or more art. One interesting fact is that the higher ranked ones were able to pick and choose which customers they wanted to serve, which spoke volumes of their status.

      Johnny Deep I don’t think you understand the situation or you are confusing different things. What you are talking about sounds like sex trafficking which is horrible and exists everywhere. I’m pretty sure there are some sketchy hostess bars ran by crime syndicates.
      However, I believe that this particular situation and establishment is different. You have to have some understanding about Eastern Asian Culture to make sense of the situation. Brothels have always been part of the history of China, Japan, and Korea. On the same end, so have institutions geared towards the higher class society. I have never heard of an equivalent elsewhere (I’m not knowledgeable on this subject) but in these three countries, they had very high standards for the women who served at the top tier. They had to be educated and trained in more than one art (calligraphy, dance, song, instrument, chess) and along with that came some status.
      Times have changed along with the standards of this profession. However, that does not erase the societal impact that a thousand plus years of history has ingrained in their culture. Hostesses are not geishas or qinglous, but they are similar in some points. This is especially so for this particular establishment, which is basically at the top of the spectrum and geared towards the extremely wealthy.
      It’s not whether I believe, it’s just a cultural difference and an understanding that comes with the acquired historical knowledge.

      @abmong 5 років тому +141

      @@wonderlandartwork3579 Like any work of this nature I think the lines are more blurred. I would still say Hostesses are more like Geisha than Oiran. Sex isn't in their job description or what is expected of them. It's up to the Hostesses and Geisha whether they engaged in sex with the client or not. There were instances where Geisha did choose to/or were pressured into having sex with clients, especially if it was an important client or if they simply liked the client enough. Hostesses, like Geisha are not professionally trained to pleasure with sex. The most they get told in a professional capacity is to lay on their backs... If they did train in that area it counts more as extra curricular studies.
      Plus for Geisha there was the practice of "Mizuage" coming of age ceremony when a Maiko (trainee Geisha) graduates to becoming a senior maiko. This ceremony was auctioned off by the Geisha House, the highest bidder would become the patron/sponsor of the ceremony and had the right to take the virginity of the Maiko before she becomes senior Maiko. Modern day Geisha nolonger have to go through the sexual part of this ceremony sine prostitution was made illegal in Japan. By the same token modern Japanese Hosts and Hostesses don't sell off their virginity. You could remain a virgin if you want and still do the job of a Host/Hostess.
      Oiran are more like high class escorts/prostitute (and strippers, celebrity Burleque dancers like Dita Von Teese or even pornstars). Again sex isn't nessesarily part of their job description, but it was more heavily implied and more expected of them. Yūjo were your common brothel prostitutes.

    • @LoveHideForever2
      @LoveHideForever2 5 років тому +15

      I wouldn't say that a hostess is a modern Geiko (or Geisha), first of all there are "modern Geishas" nowadays, especially in Tokyo and there are many differences between Geikos/Geishas and Japanese hostesses.
      You first have to do years of training as a Maiko and live in an okiya (where only "employees" are allowed) before you can become a Geiko (Gaisha), and at the beginning a maiko is only allowed to accompany and watch the more experienced maikos and Geikos. Of course, the training also includes things a hostess does like pouring drinks and entertaining, but while a hostess does this on a normal social level, a Geiko must have a lot more skills, like Japanese traditional dances, songs and instruments (like the shamisen, shakuhachi and drums), followed by tea ceremony, literature, poetry and calligraphy. Besides that a maiko/geiko-style kimono is very difficult to put on correctly, and it's nearly impossible to get into one by yourself. There are so many layers, underlayers, overlayers and yards of expensive fabric that must be tucked and folded into place correctly (so it's not "easy" to take of and on, for fun times) and and the make up is also very precisely defined. Plus the training, the kimonos, the make up and living costs are very expensive and have to be paid by the Maiko/Geiko themselves (usually you pay it back when you earn money as a Geiko).
      Yes if you reduce it to the simplest things, you can compare it, but I find that it downgrades the hard training and discipline of the Geishas quite a bit... Yes both entertain others and pour drinks and yes also a geisha (rather in old times) can have a patron/danna to help her with the training costs, but sexual contact with men would be so damaging for a modern geiko/geisha, that even if it would happen she would never talk about it (and certainly not while laughing in front of the camera).

      @@WashingMykale Also you may need to consider how the two questions are phrased - 'how much do you make per month' and 'how much are you paid a day?' Not unreasonable to think $46K is her take home pay as the top of that industry, but also it could be her hostess rate x client hours + percentage of sales. Real estate in the 'Beverly Hills' of Tokyo for a fancy bar and marketing are not cheap, plus salon costs and clothing that she maintain that image. Another doc I saw seemed to suggest they're often in-house. So as a top name with large book of existing clients if the bar/club takes 25-30% cut, then a $930 a night min from the remainder is plausible.

    I like how the interviewer said "we're human after all," to the topic of sex. Sometimes, interviewers would make the absent party look back by saying "they (the men) are men after all" instead, as if women do not have sexual drive at all. Also, the video was weirdly wholesome, considering they were talking about alcohol and sex at most times...
    Edit: I listened again, and the translation might've been because of the lack of gendered pronouns, but it doesn't matter. Still a good message.
    Edit 2: I was genuinely curious about the translation of the conversation because I'm Filipino and here, we don't have gendered pronouns. Thanks to the kind people who clarified the issue for me in the comments!

      basically blowing it out, then blowing it under with a round brush, spraying with hairspray to create texture. and then curling sections, spraying them with hairspray, and twisting them up into the bun piece by piece. run a finger through each part in your hair if you want more separation, teasing slightly so it doesn't snag, or use the end of your comb from the forehead to the bun to create those little gaps. once you try it yourself, you can see more how it's done. you gently shake out the front pieces, curling and spraying again.
