some of these coffeeshop owner are charging high rental for stall owners, yet they can't even spare a few dollars to maintain their cleanliness. really needs to be fined heavier!
The only way to ensure clean toilets is very simple: Fine the operators. The operators can only understand it is cheaper to have their staff to clean the toilet as often as needed, then to pay fines. This is a simple solution and yet the authorities have been too relaxed. I think MPs should visit toilets 3 times a day at different locations and the MPs will ensure that NEA will do their job very well.
Educate the users first. No amount of tech, cleaning, and whatever changes to the toilets will stop this trend of dirty public toilets until the users of these toilets do their part to keep them clean and dry.
Those cleaners themselves are responsible for the dirty toilets they are so lazy no time to clean toilets but sit on chairs and sleep all long, why are they hired in the first place? Robots will do a better job than them.
hahahaah you hit jackpot bro..these jungle and mountain tribes if we see what their street toilets looked like, we wont be surprised if they treat other places the same
@alneef2770 yes I seen it from my own eyes, especially from the country I, their whole family no manners like village people. Eat inside the bus and dirty the whole floor and talk faking loud like their own house
True for the west side of Singapore, street cleaners are nowhere to be seen or hiding under somewhere surfing on their phones. Rubbish remains at the same spot for days and nobody clears it. Workers eat by the roadside and often discard leftover lunch rubbish of plastic bags and bottles in the grass, bushes and drains. The streets next to the dormitories on Monday mornings are literally covered with rubbish of takeaway food packaging after the weekend or public holidays! Either the open dustbins provided just metres away aren't being used or rubbish gets dragged out and eaten by rats or birds. Such incidents keep occurring every week at a dormitory which is next to a reservoir. The amount of rubbish discarded next to the reservoir makes it very unhygienic.
Suggest to integrate toilet hygiene and cleanliness topics into all courses(if not done so) for f&b kitchen workers and make sure they pass. Have seen enough of them just walked straight out of the toilet cubicles and straight back into the stores and handled food stuff in recent years😢 Why not have a system like recertification for f&b staff to take test & refresh their knowledge on this periodically?😊
Not sure why it has taken so many years to realize this. Are cleaners trained on how to clean and held to a certain standard? Frankly with high prices of coffeeshops going through the roof, am surprised if there is any money left to renovate the toilets or even the front of the shop itself. If the country is only filled with people with no emotional attachment or family ties to this land and only here to exploit this country for money, this is the result... The standard for everything is deteriorating.
I am a foreigner and was having stomach pain at the woodland custom. When I asked the custom officer where I could go, he pointed to 2 mobile toilets. When I opened the door, it was dark inside as didn't have lights and very dirty. I couldn't use it despite having pain. The officers there insisted those are the only available toilets. When I asked further, they raised their voices and said, you could use outside, not here. I couldn't believe their statements, and walked away and went back to another block. And asked another officer if any toilets there. She pointed to one not faraway in the building. Omg, how bad was the services of those officers earlier, they couldn't care. I hope authorities take actions as it's not expected of Singapore's standard as a clean country and the bad services of those officers.
Finally there is something said about the toilets in Singapore! We've got such high standards of living with such high education levels but our public toilets are in a rather bad state I would say. Also, there needs to be more education for its users too, apart from fining these owners. of course, I've also seen my fare share of malls with many damaged facilities. It's also difficult to rate 'smell'. Haha Public hygiene must cater to different age groups, not those in primary and secondary schools. The elderly people do need them too.
More frequent inspection is needed to uphold the standard. The food price is going up without negotiation but the cleanliness is pending for improvement.
Thanks to Cna for highlighting this issue. I was aware of this this problem more than 10 years ago. In some coffee shops there are only 2 cubicles & a urinal yet the owner had made little effort to keep his toilet clean. Thanks to the inspectors, they should be fined. 2 decades ago, the Tek ka market WC was very dirty but it is now very clean. A minority of the public has to be blamed for their dirty habits.... especially men who refuse to use the utinals & pee all over the toilet seats ! In a Jalan Besay pow shop, when I saw how dirty the wc was, sure enough I got diarrhoea after eating the pots. In a Toa Payoh toilet, the woman sat outside collecting money but was too lazy to clean the toilet. Why should I pay to use a DIRTY toilet when it's free in shopping malls & MRT toilets ?
Cause and effect. Mentality - [1] pay still so dirty so I also don't care. [2] clean already still abuse so just spray water will do. Overall, coffee shop maximise money making space, so toilet small & congested. Old beer drinking uncles(with possible prostate issues) a lot so a lot frequent inaccurate(weak urine stream) peeing resulting in wet floors. I think females rarely use coffee shop toilets
Out of curiosity; why is there water on the floor and the toilet? Is it because people are just using the bidet to wash the whole room after they are done? Here in the europa, if I see a toiletseat that is wet, I consider that very dirty since I have no clue why it is wet (but we dont have bidets here). But it seem like a lot of asian countries consider that clean? (because wet means washed or something? I guess?) for example if i came to this toilet @13:46 i would be grossed out
I think we should go to pay system for coffee shops and hawker centers. BUT the money goes to the cleaners. You bet the toilets will be cleaned up. Obviously have a feedback setup to incentivize cleaning.
Please consider that usually the coffee shop toilets tended to be small, but the numbers of users are just as many as in others places. With only 1 or 2 toilet bowls or urinals they tend to get dirty very quickly. I recommend a separate location nearby specially for a slightly bigger toilets.
Public toilets reflect the very culture of people in general, ... People become so self centered, not my business, kiasi, kiasu, profit over humanity, greediness...

Give authorisation to cleaners to educate uses on proper cleaning and hygiene. These awards should be presented by ENV or MOH ministers to show how important it is. Have food bloggers must rate toilet cleanliness together with quality of food
SFA needs more stringent checks. How many times a month does SFA check on a particular coffeeshop or Hawker centre ? Cleaners of clean toilets should be given monetary reward$.
